Mario Kart Wii - Gen. Discussion & Info

I'd be interested. I love that sort of stuff.

I did some googling and I don't think you can disable the power button. I wish you could at least enable something to have the Wii ask you to confirm before it shuts off like you can with the 360.

Within each group (Light, Medium, and Heavy), each character has their own individual stats. They aren’t visible in the game though. They are ‘hidden’, I guess you could say. These bonuses are in addition to the vehicle bonuses.

I'm still trying to figure out how he ranked Sunshine ahead of Galaxy, SMB2, and NSMB. Sunshine is the most frustrating title in the series by far.
SMB2 I'll debate about... a little. Wasn't perfect but maybe it's better than Sunshine. Sunshine is frustrating, but it has a decent difficulty for most of the game. Galaxy, on the other hand, has no difficulty for most of the game.

Galaxy is arguable as well, but I still think it's too easy.
Yeah, at 3+ player split screen or 2 player split screen online, the game goes to 30fps from 60fps.
I don't know it feels less than that while playing 3+ players. 1 player feels 60fps, 2 feels 30fps, 3 on feels like it dips around 24fps. There is this really slow feeling to split screen with 3 players. I wish they gave you an option to increase frames by dropping graphic quality/cpu players or something.

Anyone try experimenting with automatic on the faster karts? I was using funky kong on the jetsetter with automatic on luigi circuit and I almost beat the fast cpu ghost. Frankly I am surprised automatic seems like a viable tactic for some of the vehicles. Although it feels less frenetic when using automatic, almost becomes gran turismo-esque, where your driving line is your only concern.

Love the game btw. Unlocked everything except Mii outfit B. Two more star races on mirror mode and I will have a star next to my name. I noticed you don't unlock anything for one staring all of mirror mode grand prix. Seems weird considering every other one nets you something. Usually you get a kart/bike or a character. Kind of wish the single player didn't end. I guess that is what the tournaments are for.

Thats the list of info I used. It may tell the character stats but it doesn't make specific kart recommendations. So I took the stat info , compared it to the vehicle info stats in the kart selection screen , and tried to make matches based on stats that would compliment one another.

Simple Example : Luigi gives a +1 to speed and a +2 to weight. Based on this , he's actually one of the only middleweights (one out of three) who would get the most advantage out of the Classic Dragster.

As I mentioned , I haven't fully tested all the combinations , and also just because stats seem to compliment one another doesn't mean jack squat if you still can't win a race , I've discoved this with several of the heavyweights.

What the...

So, I was playing online just a few moments ago, and the second race I join, this happens.

We began a match at Luigi's Circuit, with myself in the first place position. Right as the light turned green, I boosted forward. Yet, instantaneously, and in several kart-lengths in front of me, three other competitors appeared, putting me in fourth. I did the boost perfectly, so I was really surprised that I was trailing, and even more perplexed on how they seemingly teleported. I kept going, and all throughout the match, people were appearing and disappearing, and I was totally in 'WTF' mode. What was even weirder, was that as we pulled into the final stretch of the third lap, I noticed two other people cross the finish line before me (and I'm pretty sure I wasn't simply lapping them), and yet I was still awarded first.

What's weird is that the match after that, nothing similar happened. Has anyone else experienced these weird glitches?

That exact same thing happened to me yesterday. This entire race one player kept teleporting above and then behind me, I was in 2nd place the entire race, despite clearly being in first several times, what was even weirder was that even though I was in 2nd, blue shells kept targeting me! This went on for several matches, and it was the same person, so I assumed there was cheatin' going on.

That's been the only glitch I've seen playing online so far though. And it's happened with several other players I've run into online.

Weird. You say it has happened multiple times to you? That stinks even more! I did not appreciate all that mess.

At least it didn't happen on my Grumble Volcano. I needed to punish those moto racers, and I did. :D
Just sounds like lag to me.
It does sound like lag, but that's also a lot worse than any lag I've seen in the game before. :whistle2:k

If it is lag, I guess I didn't recognize it because it simply hasn't happened before. Is MK one of those online games where it renders your expected path on-screen, and then corrects it (quite dramatically) if it's mistaken? Because, if so, all of my questions are answered.

I'm starting to think it is lag related, since it's happened several times tonight, and I really doubt that KylesMom and PhilDad have hax0r skills

I guess I'm so used to the Brawl "slideshow" lag that I expect it to be that way for all Wii games.

Regarding the auto versus manual discussion that has been going on, I definitely think that auto has advantages with certain karts/cycles that really help you in a race. My wife picks automatic for every kart she chooses and routinely beats me both online and offline. Not to mention people online who are smoking me on really windy tracks using the wheel!

I'm definitely not the best Mario Kart player out there, but I know my actual driving/drifting skills are better than my wife but as I said, she can consistently beat me in almost every race. I guess I need to switch to automatic (and maybe even use the wheel as well) and see what happens.

I finally tried out automatic over the weekend, and the difference was staggering. Personally, it's fairly obvious that the game was designed for the automatic turning and that they threw in the manual to keep people happy (and for the people that *need* it after 15 years of Mario Kart).

While I was routinely smoking people on 50 and 100, putting it on auto began to make me smoke people on 150, which was helpful.

The only problem is that I feel like I'm not 'playing' as much, if that makes sense.

I wanted to ask (sorry, haven't looked at this thread much), is there any particular day/time CAG plays Mario Kart Wii? I just want to know because I want to play the wonderful people on my buddy list more often. If there isn't, I'll just try organizing something myself, but I want to know.

for me, the only advantage of using auto is that you can easily make a sharp turn. but the bikes with a high quality drift can make an equally sharp turn and give you a boost.

and for karts, sliding is very important for instantly sliding in one direction or another. this is very useful for dodging bananas and shells on the track.

i've only used auto on one evening. so there may be some other advantages that i didn't realize.

I'm for organized MK Wii play. After I fail my Physics final today, I'll have, essentially, all daylight every day, PDT, to play with y'all for the summer.

I tried automatic for the first time today, against the computer with Funky Kong and the Flame Rider. I got the gold on the 150CC Shell Cup...and was amazed to find that I'd also gotten my first three star ranking ever.

I'm with you in that it feels like you're "playing less," but if I'm going to do this much better with automatic, it might be worth switching over, at least on occasion.

I pulled off my first three star ranking the other night as well. Ironically enough I did it on the very last cup I needed to beat , mirror special , after failing to even single star the cup three times before. I think the key to me getting the 3 star rank was my finish on rainbow road , where I placed 1st ahead
of bowser by 40 seconds.

Pick a day and time and I'll try to make it TMK.

Do the ghost races on the Mario Kart Channel count as a time trial run? (For purposes of the unlockables.) I assume it does as the times go in your time trial records.

yea, they count. i love those ghost races.
for days. sunday and tuesday are the only ones that don't work for me.

Has N discussed why they only let you take 2 online on a single Wii and not the full 4?

If anything that would make the network less stressed/laggy as there would be less Wiis connected to a single race.

The one thought I had was that would mean there would be 3 guests who could potentially help the single player to earn VR points but that could have been solved by having races with more than 2 people on a single Wii not earn points for the main player on that Wii.

But at least they do let you take two online from one Wii. Can't complain too much I guess. :D
Has N discussed why they only let you take 2 online on a single Wii and not the full 4?
The drop in visual quality that occurs with just two players online would be exponentially worse with 4. Two player WFC play looks much worse than two player local play. I pretty much only play MK Wii with my wife and I can't believe how much difference there is between local co-op play and online co-op in terms of visuals.

While it would be a novel thing to have, I think it would look pretty awful.

It is amazing to see how many people are playing 2 player online from one Wii though. Almost every match my wife and I play has at least one other twosome playing online together (as shown by one player being "guest.")
Anyone up for some races? I'd even be fine with partnering up with someone and taking over a regional match!
Sure - I need to kill time because I've got about an hour and a half before our tourney match is supposed to happen.

Are we friends? :whistle2:k
I ... think so? Let me check really quick.

EDIT: We certainly are! I'll jump into a regional race - join me when you get on!
I'll be on in ~10 minutes, after I take care of some laundry. :)

Why did Hayden pick Luigi's Circuit twice in a row? That's pretty lame.

Thanks for playing, GW! Too bad we always were trailing Hayden. :( A motorcycle plus FK will do that.

No problem. Trust me - I look much better in matches when there are more than three people, and everyone else has a higher vs. ranking than I do. ;)

Didn't do so hot with the wheel, and I'm not sure if I ever will. The turning just feels off to me, even with automatic turned on, and I usually end up flying all over after the controls get squirrelly from a jump or something like that.

So, I think Kart is going the way of Brawl, in terms of online disconnects. I was at about 7500 VR today when I started, worked my way up to the low 8000s, entered a 12-person race, and guess what? I got disconnected, losing about 400 VR. So, I'm basically back where I started.

And people online need to learn this: Coconut Mall really isn't that great!

I hate when people pick the same course that was just raced. :bomb:

But coconut mall is OTHB.

Picked up a second wheel tonight. The Target near me had about 8 Wii's in stock. I always have to stare at them since it is a rarity to see them in the "wild."

I am sick of coconut mall too. I only played one online race tonight and of course it was coconut mall. At least I destroyed the competition.

Personally, 50% of the enjoyment from Coconut Mall is getting hit my Miis driving the cars at the end. I revel in being able to blame my losses on Tom Selleck's porr driving skills.

Oh, and finally got around to unlocking everything that *isn't* unlocked by completing Mirror Mode. Once I get through that, I'm good to go. So, that Mii B outfit... does it change depending on your most character or am I confused?

Same thing happened to me. I was on Wario's Gold Mine and I already claimed first place. As I was waiting for everyone else to cross the line, I was disconnected and I went from about 9400 VR to 9100. Helps that everyone wasn't in the 5000's, so I didn't lose that many points.

I really haven't had much of a problem with disconnects so far, but it has happened more often to me recently than it had in the past.

Coconut Mall seems to get picked by players a lot when I'm playing, but then it's almost never chosen as the track we race on. The track I'm getting sick of is N64 Sherbert Land. I was never a fan of it in the N64 days, and it seems to be one of the retro tracks that comes up the most often now. :bomb:

I like this idea a lot.

That said, it wouldn't be too hard to throw out a time and day in this thread and see who's around. I'd suggest...say, tomorrow night, but I don't know if I'll be ta home yet. :whistle2:k

Just started playing. Love online play. I wish I didn't have to play single player to unlock everything though.

My code, just be sure to PM me to add ya: 0774 5118 0057
Or if you already have my Wii Number, just shoot me an invite and i'll send one right back.

The retro courses that constantly get picked when I am playing are GBA Bowser's Castle 3, SNES Ghost Valley 2 (or whatever the hell it is called), and SNES Mario Circuit.

I can't stand any of those tracks yet they get picked over and over.

I've also been having a lot of trouble with disconnections. I managed to get my score to around 9300 last night, then got disconnected 2 races in a row, losing around 600 points in the process. :cold:

I considering leaving CAG and forgetting this, but I feel I should give this a shot because I really like Mario Kart and feel their should be a Mario Kart night.

To be honest, I'm working Mario Kart around my other CAG nights (good news for people apart of the PSN gaming group). What I'm planning on is a Mario Kart game during the week, and during the weekend. For the weekend I'm aiming at Saturday, while on the week I'm aiming for Wednesday (or Thursday). Also, I'd have an earlier time (mostly for EST people), and a later time (mostly for PST people) during the week.

I'll let you all know details later.

I'm not completely sure how I will handle game nights yet (I'd probably have to treat this like a CoD4 for an example, where everyone tries to become friends with other another, or I could create a CAG Mii which everyone becomes friends with (or some), then people people friends with someone who is friends with my Mii (to get almost everyone in).

I dunno, I'll work something out.

i just got above 8000 last night for the first time. i don't know if i'll be able to get that much higher or even hold this rating. but i enjoyed the challenge.
