Mario party 8
No online, no buy.
It's not that fun anyway, and I don't have that many Wii friends that come over to justify it.
The only problem I see with online is that since MP games take a long time to finish one board, I would expect to see a high percent disconnectors. Also, for a game like this, disconnections would be super annoying.

If they did online with people needing each others FC's then I think it would slightly alleviate the problem. It's also not as fun not having the other 3 people there playing next to you since that's part of the fun, smack talking :)

I'm not against online MP or anything.

Got this preordered from that CC deal. Can't wait!
It's also not as fun not having the other 3 people there playing next to you since that's part of the fun, smack talking :)
Theoretically, you could use the microphone and the speaker in the wiimote to smack talk online opponents. Or am I wrong about there being a microphone in the wiimote?

Does anyone else absolutely hate this fucking series?

Sorry for the cuss, but wow this game pisses me off beyond belief. The sheer randomness of the star-giving is just too much for me to handle. The game is like 75% dumb shit luck, and the other 25% requiring you to be half decent at the mini games. Here, have a star for moving exactly 20 spaces....WTF?!

/end rant.

....but I'm glad you all enjoy it.

Im glad I enjoy it as well, because its a darn good game.

I like Mario Party 8 because it has that 8-player feature where two people share a side of the Gamecube controller. In my extended family/friends, we have exactly 8 people that would play and so it turns into a big **** talking festival. The teams are all varied too which makes it really fun.

Mario Party 7 :)

That's a good question. Is Mario Party 8...8 players??? I guess it would be hard to share a Wii Mote. I guess what they will do is save 8 players for Mario Party 9..and with 9, they will in-corporate wiimote sharing via the CC or Nunchuk..and thus, then give us Mario Party 10 w/o that stuff again, but with Online.

LOL :(

This seris has so much potential, but Nintendo just won't get their head out of their ass.

-With each game less skill is involved, and it's all chance. So Nintendo can appeal to the kiddies.

-This game would be perfect for online play, but there is none.

-If there was online play, it would be riddled with annoying friend codes, which makes me not even want to play online even if it was available.

-This is essentailly the same game as all the others, just instead of a button press, you'll be using the Wii-mote.

What I'd like to see is some good online components, without any annoying, ridiculious restrictions. A more fleshed out single player game with some kind of a interesting story. I want more focus on skill, and timing than chance and dumb luck.

You're fucking crazy. I have a shit-ton of friends, but guess what? No all of them are gamers, and even if they were they'd definitely be more of the Xbox 360/PS3 style of player. Not to mention, I can't afford to buy extra controllers with nun-chuck attachments, for the off chance that I can convince some of my guy buddies to play Mario Party 8 on the Wii over going to the bar to hit on girls.

Honestly with that attitude these gamers aren't in the least bit aimed at you as a consumer. So just don't buy it. You don't see us Nintendo gamers pissing on ps3 and 360 thre....wait nm.

Anyway..just don't buy it, have fun at the bar. So does anyone have the game in hand yet? i had read somewhere the release was pushed up a few days and it was already out.

I'm tempted to grab this, but I also haven't had very good experiences with Mario Party. Every time I've played, by the halfway point everyone is groaning, "Is it fucking over yet? Christ, this is boring." I've had much better times with Shrek's Super Party, or even Pac Man Vs., than any Mario Party (I've only played up to MP4). There's just something about spending two hours on a virtual board game, only to realize that the winner might as well have been chosen at random, that doesn't really make me want to go back.

I'm really hoping the Wiimote action can make a difference, but I don't think I can risk spending $50 (or even $40) on this quite yet.
Did you play it by yourself or with 3 other friends? I can imagine it being boring by yourself, but not with friends.
Yeah, Mario Party is ONLY fun when you actually have people to play with! They usually throw in a 1player mode..and it's neat. But the game itself is all about it's multiplayer. I never see anyone rave much about the single player mode in Halo or Halo 2..it's all about the online/multiplayer. I see no difference. (Ok, FPS game vs Party game..but i'm not talking genres here lol)

I would of loved to have tried Mario Party 7 w/ 7 other people. Me, my friend and brother tried it before..lol it looks like it would be a blast playing with 7 other people! Hopefully, that day comes =)

Mario Party 7's 8 player mode was awesome. I threw it in during a LAN party and while most of the crew was unsure about going half each on a controller, by the end everyone was laughing at how much fun it was. I hope Mario Party 8 is just as awesome with big groups cause thats usually the only times I can get Mario Party rolling.

Got a call from GS saying my game would be in Tuesday evening. Are they really going to have it that soon given the holiday? This was the automated message of course, so I don't necessarily trust it. I don't want to get it there anyway (will probably switch that to Metroid) - I'd rather get it at GC with a price match to CC or Fry's.

I've only played four-player.

Wow, real nice. None of my friends surf, and I don't even know what Winter X is, glad to see that you're extremely closed minded though because some people would rather go outside than play a video game for pleasure. I'm obviously a gamer, or I wouldn't be on this site, I'm not some uber-Bro that won't pick up a game because it's too colorful.

I never said that I personally had a problem with the cutesy image of Mario Party, or Nintendo games in general. I said that it would simply be much harder for me to convince my non-gamer friends, whom are all guys between the ages of 20-26, that if they were to play a game that the game should be Mario Party. Face facts most guys would rather go for headshots in Halo, or smash cars in Motorstorm, than play a round of Mario Party 8, and with the ever declining quality of Nintendo's releases I can't say I blame them anymore.

It's the quality of Nintendo's releases, not the "attitude" as you put it, that gets me down on these games. I love the style of Nintendo games, that's what I grew up on..... that's what keeps me buying them. You used to be able to count on Nintendo's first-party titles to deliver quality, and popular characters, but how long can Nintendo milk the same franchise without doing anything new or exciting before people just give up on them? Everything they're doing lately has felt so cookie-cutter. The Wii was supposed to be this huge change, but it turned out to be a different way to press a button, or move the control stick buy shaking your wrist. It was fun at first, but now the excitement has worn off, and it's time for Nintendo to deliver the qualty games, and stop with the glorified tech-demos.
Just got the game. Doesn't even support widescreen. Borders on each side of the screen FTL :(
There's 3 reviews up on metacritic: 90, 83, and 80 - so looking good so far. I read through them for any mention of this and there's nothing either way (which is a glaring oversight for a review as far as I'm concerned, especially if there is no widescreen).

However, I saw this in one review:

You can also use customized Miis within the game in lieu of the cast of Nintendo characters, adding further to the fun and fervor that Mario Party 8 has to offer.

That's pretty cool, and nothing I've heard so far.

For whatever reason. Metacritic hasn't included the Nintendo Power review, which so far is the lowest scored one (75)! I've had the magazine for a few days now. The review is what you'd expect - it is more of the same Mario Party and if you like the others you'll like this one, blah, blah, blah.

EDIT - D'oh, the NP review does mention the lack of widescreen. Well, that sucks, but it isn't a deal-breaker in any case.

If so, that's EXTREMELY cool!

My $25 TRU/Google Checkout order just got cancelled AGAIN, so I'm about to give up on getting this (no interest in paying more for as little as I tend to play these games).

Well, that one review makes is sound that way, but I just read through my NP which has a big feature on Mario Party (in addition to the pathetic little review). This article says the Miis are only useable in 8 minigames located in the "Extras Zone" (half of which are unlocked during normal play). The games shown in NP are bowling, table tennis, moped racing, and some sort of flag-waving Simon-says type game.

Still cool, but not nearly as cool as I thought at first ;).

Botticus - I did one of those TRU orders WAY back when that first popped up. How do you even know it was cancelled? I've gotten no email about it either way. I completely forgot what email I used to sign up for it ;). (But it should be forwarded to my normal email if anything gets sent to it - just that I would have a hard time logging into Google to check on the order).

Reason for both cancellations (first one I knew was going to happen) is that you can't change billing information once an order is placed, and when I placed the order, the game was delayed by months, so my credit card on file expired. Fixed all that, reordered (GCO gave me the bonus to make up for the price error that TRU has since fixed), and just had the same cancellation reason this time which no longer makes sense. But both were GCO problems. If your TRU order is still open, you should be fine. Or as fine as you can be with a TRU.com order.

My TRU/GCO says it is still processing.

None of the reviews are doing anything for me. I think I might just sell it and pick up the Darkness(360), Resident Evil 4(Wii) or Manhunt 2(Wii) when it comes out. Plus no widescreen support bothers me.
I've had this game pre-ordered since the EB Trade-2 Wii Games Get One Free deal ...
An update: I transferred my preorder from Mario Party to Mario Strikers Charged; I haven't decided whether I will pick it up or not, but certainly if I do it will involve CC's $40 sale price and $20 off a second Wii title.

Edit: It appears like the $20 off two Wii games no longer works.

Mine too, my TRU.com order still says it's processing. It doesn't say that it's shipped yet but I'm holding out hope. Especially since my card information hasn't changed at all since the order so I haven't needed to make changes.

Man IGN hated this game. I've never owned or played a Mario party game. (Could never find a "deal" on a MP game)

So I don' t think the game will feel old to me. I'll wait for my fellow CAGs to let me know how good the game is. The way IGN makes the game sound makes me kinda want to wait for MP 9.

That was me like a month ago. I was so desperate to try and find a good Wii game. I got Rayman, and Warioware, traded those back within 2 weeks. Then got Tiger Woods, which was iffy, and finally Paper Mario. I was literally just grabbing at titles. *sigh* Why won't you let me love you Wii?

Well, I *DID* say I was getting it . While I don't follow reviews too much, you have to admit a 5.2 is pretty damn low for a game like this. But of course, I will be posting my impressions in here and we'll see how much I disagree with them (or not).

Also, of course, there are other reviews giving it 8-9 scores, so who the hell knows. Usually when a game has a wide range like that it is because it is a love it or hate it type of thing. Many of the reviews automatically knock the score down for Mario Party because it hasn't changed much over the years (I think NP did this for one). In that case I have to disregard that score a bit because I KNOW it will be more of the same, and I'm OK with that ;). The IGN review is very much like that. The only disturbing bit in that review is that they claim the Wii remote is not used properly. If that's truly the case, I find that astounding - you'd think if nothing else they'd nail that!

I almost stayed away from Mario Party 4 years ago after seeing it get a 3/10 from Game Informer. I'm glad I didn't listen to that crap cause after renting it (it was the first Mario Party I played), my friends and I loved it and played countless times. Same goes for every MP since. Rent it if you don't know wether to buy it or not.

The scores are clearly bad, but I can basically guarantee that anyone else who has enjoyed former Mario Party games and was looking forward to this one will like it. I've noticed that many of these review sites usually mark the scores for games waaaaay down just simply cause its extremely similar to the past titles. I bet it would be like a 7-8/10, or even more if it was the first mario party title to be released. Take Megaman battle network for example...slowly marked down and the game really hasn't changed at all. Everythings just marked down cause nothing changes, graphics aren't enhanced, etc. I enjoyed lots of the Mario Party titles, actually all of them that I bought...I just stopped at 5 because I figured I had enough mario Party minigames to play with friends at that point and it wasn't worth the money to buy more lol. (Plus I didn't like the mic idea)

So ya...plus who actually cares about the graphics score? As long as it's not like a 1 right?...so that cuts out a 5 right there.

I never trust the reviews. I'll buy it because hence the name, it's a fun party game that my friends and I play often.

Does unlocking all the mini-games through single-player feel as painful as the reviews make it seem? I wanna have all the games unlocked when I have my friends over.
Does unlocking all the mini-games through single-player feel as painful as the reviews make it seem? I wanna have all the games unlocked when I have my friends over.
I never thought so...I actually always REALLY enjoyed playing single player with every Mario Party I bought just to unlock the new minigames and see what they are after watching the random selection hopefully go to one with a question mark. Also I liked playing each board a few times anyway. It's fun till you hit like the last 5 unlocked minigames where you might have to play multiple boards just to unlock a single minigame. But ya...I didn't find it tedious at all. I just think the reviewers are sick of having to play the same thing over and over and in longer durations over a shorter time period than we have to lol
Just got the game. Doesn't even support widescreen. Borders on each side of the screen FTL :(
Does it support 480p at least?

I love how this game is a no-win proposition for us Wii owners. We're "sheep" if we listen to the few bad reviews and don't buy it. Yet we are brain-dead Nintendo fanboys who give them "a free pass for pumping out another cash grab, money milking Mario Party game" if we do buy it.

I'll add a third one - this is a stupid game to rent because you'll either hate it or will want to keep it to play a long time (or break out for parties, whatever). So, you're a moron if you waste a rental on this too! There - now there's no way to enjoy this game (or pass on it) without being put down!

You gotta love CAG!

The good news is, if you want to unlock all the important stuff in the game, it's easy this time. Just wait for a few weeks and I'm sure someone on GameFaqs will upload a completed save file. Pop in your SD card and transfer to it. Then SD card to Wii and move the save file, and you're done!

That is what I was expecting. Its sad that people will buy this junk up. If it keeps selling it will just repeat the cycle of more Mario Parties and third party developers trying to cash in on the "genre".

yeah honestly all the Wii and Ps3 games aren't that good right now, but I know sony and nintendo will have plenty of good games later this year. I only have Zelda and Super Paper Mario for my Wii and Resistance and Motorstorm for PS3. I would've got Oblivion but I already owned it on 360.
