Mass Effect 3 Discussion Thread

The music team was officially announced, with a short piece to go along with it:

We're officially announcing our team of talented composers who have played a critical role in Mass Effect 3's musical development, with direction by our audio team. The roster of composers for Mass Effect 3 includes:
• Clint Mansell, Golden Globe nominated Hollywood composer recognized for scoring celebrated films including Black Swan, The Wrestler and Requiem for a Dream.
• Christopher Lennertz, Emmy nominated Hollywood composer known for his work on the recent movie Horrible Bosses, also composed Mass Effect 2: Overlord, Mass Effect 2: Lair of the Shadow Broker, and won the Interactive Academy Award for Medal of Honor.
• Cris Velasco, known for composing the God of War series’ score, has also worked on downloadable content Mass Effect 2: Kasumi and Mass Effect 2: Arrival.
• Sam Hulick, veteran to the Mass Effect series having composed the score for Mass Effect, Mass Effect: Bring Down the Sky and Mass Effect 2.
• Sascha Dikiciyan, video game industry veteran, known for composing the score for TRON: Evolution and the scores of Mass Effect 2: Kasumi and Mass Effect 2: Arrival.

“The magic of BioWare games has always been the emotional power of the story, so music is extremely important to the experience,” said Casey Hudson, Executive Producer of the Mass Effect series. “With Mass Effect 3, we’re taking players on a more personal journey, even though the scope is bigger than ever – an all-out galactic war! Each composer has played an intricate role in delivering the combination of epic scope and delicate emotion that will make Mass Effect 3 the best game in the series.”

Listen to the teaser music and let us know what you think about this great team!

Can't wait to hear all of this stuff. Looks like they brought Sam Hulick back, despite him not initially being part of the project.

Nice to see that some ME2 composers are along for the ride. Nothing against Clint Mansell, but it always worries me a little to see the grab of a "name" from a more "respected" art form. Skills don't necessarily translate.

Like the dubs that Disney made for movies like Kiki's Delivery Service and Princess Mononoke, trying to break anime to a larger audience by using Hollywood stars instead of established voice actors. It just proved that a good actor is not the same as a good voice actor.

From what I've heard of Mansell's work on ME3 so far, he is the real fucking deal and I'm excited to hear all of his work. His work on Requiem was brilliant and I can't see how this would go wrong if he truly has a grasp of the ME universe. If he doesn't play games, I hope someone sat him down and he watched them play ME1, ME2 and ME3.

Clint Mansell does do great work, so seeing him on the composer list is a good thing indeed.

Having the other ME2 game and DLC composers is an even better thing, plus having Sam Hulick as well? I think this should be the best ME score/soundtrack yet.
I'm hoping we'll see the ME3 promotion ramp up a little bit now that The Old Republic is out.
It's their only release for 2012 is it not? They better promote the hell out of it. First 3 platform launch for the ME franchise too. I'll be sad to see it go, but I'd love to see Jade Empire reborn.

I just found this thread...add me to the excitement level for this game. I went against CAG nature and pre-ordered the CE but its gonna be so worth it :D

When it comes to ME, and Bioware stuff in general, you get a friendly pass from traditional CAG behavior. The games are just too damn good! I just paid $100 for the ME1 CE a couple weeks ago and have had the ME3 LE on preorder since August.

I pay full price for Bioware and Bethesda games. Everyone else has to take less than $40.

I plan on buying the ME1 and 2 CE's at somepoint as well. paid full price for ME2 and I wish I had bought ME1 on release, by far my favorite current-gen series!
It kind of is a CAG move to by a Mass Effect CE on release, both of the previous ones have become hatd-to-find and expensive later on.
At least the ME2 CE was available at a wide range of retailers, so it was easier to find because it was more available.

ME1 CE, being a GS.com-only exclusive made it hard to find, plus it showed up for order not much before release date, which made it hard to get if you didn't know what was up with it. That also had it being made in smaller numbers, so again, harder to get.

ME2 CE though did disappear semi-quickly after release, so it did hold its value. I hope ME3 CE to do the same.

I wish they had something for the 360 owners who bought all three of the ME CEs, since the only way to get them was for 360. PC ME1 didn't have a CE, and PS3 ME2 didn't have a CE.

FYI I'm looking to sell my complete ME 1 CE on 360 for somewhat near EBay prices. Only doing it so I can get a plane ticket to go to PAX East. I'll give the Bioware 360 CAG's first dibs.

I haven't checked recently, but I imagine preorders for the CE at Gamestop will stop sometime in January, if not before. If you are denied in-store, you usually have around 24 hours to get it on the website before it's shut down there also. I would advise against trusting BB for it given the issues they have with pre-orders in-store so go with Amazon after that.

I so would have bought your ME1 CE off of you, MSUHit. I'd been looking for one in good condition at a reasonable price for over a year. I got lucky with mine, even though it cost $100. It's in excellent condition, including the slipcase. I used to be a heavy duty collector (mostly star wars stuff), but in the past 4 years, I've sold off 99% of my collection. But I am really glad I got the ME1 CE as a collectors item.

Man I wish I had some extra funds lying around:(

Anyhow, I havent read through a lot of the thread, what are you guys' general playthroughs/choices? I did 4 or 5 characters covering all the Paragon/Renegade options. Pretty much stuck to soldier or adept classes. Probably gonna do one more runthrough before ME3 where I'll just pick what I want instead of going completely Paragon or Renegade.

I have two mains with throughlines through both games, a male Vanguard who's mostly Paragon with a pro-human/xenophobic streak; and a female Soldier who's full-on Renegade. Plus a bunch of other characters who I started in ME2.

My two playthroughs started as ME1 playthroughs, one male Paragon Vanguard and one female Renegade Adept.

I'd have to put a recommendation in for playing a Vanguard if you haven't played one, mainly because it's high-risk/high-reward combat and lots of fun. It seems to be even more of a draw in ME3 with the new bonus power each class has, plus the omni-blade.

I will probably be doing that at somepoint. Since my first runs in ME1 and 2 were soliders I expect my first run in ME3 will be the same to stay consistent, but vanguard will definitely be one of my subsequent runs.

Once you migrate into ME2, the Vanguard takes on a whole different level of fun with Charge.

Make sure you do Katsumi's Stolen Memory as soon as you can when you're in ME2 as a Vanguard, as the SMG you pick up there is the best one you have, as well as pick up assault rifle training when you're on the Collector ship.

I always go for assault rifle training when I can. And when possible I take the Revenant cause it is a BEAST. Smokes every enemy no problem. Probably one of the reasons I like soldier class so much lol

I've been following the new comic story, Invasion, and I have to say it stinks compared to the other ME Comics. The story is flat and predictable. If anything, it gives Aria more depth and makes me want to replace Samara with Aria. Aria really is a Mega bad ass. Anyway, the comic is just a typical licensed tie in and that's a shame.

@Gamer magazine article on ME3. It's PDF format, took like 15 minutes to load up fully for me, so be warned. Some new screenshots but nothing new in the way of information. "Multiplayer-- a feature its fanbase has long been crying out for," Lololololol.

Thanks for that, Ryu. Now I don't feel like I need to go buy that issue of @Gamer magazine. Being a game-rag junkie, it's a miracle I haven't subscribed to that crappy magazine yet.

You were right, not much new information. But, dang, I'd like those layout backgrounds for PC backgrounds!

Damn ME1 holds up well. I started playing today as a female renegade vanguard so I would have a good and bad play through (original= male paragon soldier). I'm about 2 hours in and the fighting is better than I remember and the story/dialogue is outstanding.

You bet yer a$$ it holds up well! The game was much better than I remembered when I went back for a 2nd playthrough after a 1.5 year hiatus. There was a lot of depth that I didn't appreciate the first time through, pinnacle station being a perfect example. I might do a marathon ME1-3 this summer, maybe go almost completely renegade.

I don't know, to be honest, when I go back and play ME1, the writing and acting is phenomenal but the gameplay feels half-baked. Like it was the first draft and ME2 was where the team's ideas were actually realized. I just never got the hang of using the powers and such, everything felt so clunky.

About 2.5 hrs in and the combat is 5x better than I remembered. Its nice not having to deal with ammo, but I agree that the powers are pretty weak (at least in the beginning). I am playing on easy though so that may be why.
The combat is much more natural and fluid in ME2, but I really love the exploration of ME1. Mako FTW!
fuck mako

There were 3 things I hated about ME1:
1. The first level where you are in the mako. (I died at least 15 times trying to get out of that initial tunnel).
2. The fight with the insect lady or the biotic lady. (I dont remember exactly, but I died another 15 times there too)
3. The final boss.

tl;dr mako sucks

I'll take the Mako over the paper airplan- er Firewalker any day of the week. I never had a problem with it. Terrible terrain on planets and questionable mission design is another story.
I liked the Mako more than planet scanning..
Same, but both kind of sucked and both games would have been better without that junk. Same with the Firewalker. They should just focus on the story and questing like they do in the Dragon Age games, and not add in all that other crap IMO.

I'm pretty stoked for ME3....but not sure if I'll get it at launch. I have a small backlog (including Skyrim) that's built up as my hacked live account has been locked down for investigation since late October. I won't buy any more games until I clear that out first.

I did put an early access token toward ME3 on Goozex and I'm 22 in line there, so maybe I'll end up getting it through there while I'm working on the backlog.

Has anyone found any good ME3 wallpapers for the PC yet? I've done some searching, and the official ChubbyNinja bioware ones are OK, but haven't found anything really cool yet.

I also liked the Mako over the Firewalker...the only downside to the Mako was how most planets had the same terrain making the Mako not much fun to drive.

I imagine the CE will have some cool ones.

I'd bite on that Monopoly set too if it were sub $20. I love Monopoly too but theres already so many themed versions out...I'd hope Mass Effect would find some way to stand out a little bit more.

PSA for Mass Effect 2 players, the Arrival DLC is currently on sale on XBLM for $3.50. Just don't expect it to be good like Kasumi and Lair of the Shadow Broker. :p

I liked Arrival a lot. Probably my second favorite DLC after Shadow Broker.

I wasn't a big fan of the gameplay in the Kasumi DLC, and I'd already finished my two playthroughs by the time it came out so I never got much chance to use her as a party member.

Not having any squadmates with you was a huge minus for me with Arrival. ME2 has a much better combat experience than ME1 so Arrival wasn't as dire as Pinnacle Station, but Mass Effect is at its best when it's balancing that combat with character interaction. And even as far as the combat went, having Shepard solo for the majority of the DLC just made it seem very one-dimensional.

I dug how Stolen Memory mixed up the gameplay a little (though the "adventure" portion does get old after repeated playthroughs when you already know how to solve the puzzles). Kasumi herself was a great character, and of course the Locust SMG is invaluable throughout the entire game for classes without assault rifle training.

The bonus of the Kasumi DLC is the Locust SMG. You can get that as soon as you're done with the first mission for EM as it is a good gun.

I thought Arrival packed a pretty decent punch, even though it was one of the weaker DLC's. Good setup for ME3, so well worth it at that price.

For me, I'd rank the story DLC as follows:

Shadow Broker, Kasumi (for the SMG and Kasumi is a BAMF character), Overlord, Arrival, Firewalker.

Not counting Zaeed or any of the DLC that came as part of the game's release (ie the Normandy dog tags, which I personally thought were one of the game's most underrated missions)
