Mass Effect 3 Discussion Thread

Lol this is a cool wallpaper, happy ending
mass-effect-3-happy-ending.jpg
Eh it's alright; it's missing
Javik (well optional DLC char I guess), EDI and not enough of Mordin
.

Also I wouldn't mind a strategy game akin to something like Sins of a Solar Empire in the Mass Effect universe using a galactic map kind of interface for part of it.

The more I think about it, the more I understand that the story was intended to be bigger than my bromance with Garrus, or my love with Liara, or even EDI's fine little behind. The overall message was projected to us in the genophage and geth missions. That's what this was all about. It's truly an epic story of biblical proportions where one badass space soldier and a crew of his buddies defeated the odds thus saving countless future generations and even species. The names are incidental, I'm afraid.

You're right, I could not disagree with that statement more completely. But I think the fact that the series can be interpreted and appreciated in such totally different ways just speaks to how great it is.

You know what I miss from ME2? Not being able to sell out to the shops for lower prices. I imagine there's some in-game text blurb that explains the Shop Owners got wise to Shepard and decided to band together to prevent it from happening again.

They made the discounts a part of Glyph's terminal now. A strange decision, but I imagine it had something to do with "I'm Commander Shepard and this is my favorite store on the Citadel" becoming a meme.

If there's anything I miss, it's all the comedic moments from ME2. It was a much funnier game than ME1 and then they had to make ME3 really serious, with fewer comedic moments.
I thought there were some pretty good lines. Joker's gun that fires thresher maws, "That was a joke," Javik ridiculing James.
Prothy is such a rascal! It was weird hearing him laugh, actually.

Aye. Thing for me is that... well, that's kind of boring. Bioware doesn't really do interesting stories. They do generic save the x from y. They make some pretty interesting characters and they write some pretty good lines for 'em (usually) and they hire some pretty damn good voice actors and sometimes, sometimes they even animate 'em well.

But the "grand story"?

Nah. Not really their thing.

Just got the game today and have a question. I have tried my best to avoid spoilers and everything, and not really paid much attention to all the DLC and online stuff but I was wondering should I get this From Ashes DLC? I have just started the game
Just left Mars
and I heard its best to play it pretty much straight away.

I have 1020 MS points and have no real sign of spending them on anything soon.

By the way I am a fan of the series, played them all through and imported my character all the way also if that makes any difference.

Thanks.

There are two answers to this.

Yes, you should get it because the character you get has more plot-relevance than anyone else in your squad. Like, dude's super important.

No, you should not get it because fuck you guys for selling a core part of the plot on release day for ten dollars.

That joke killed me, dude. Also, James and Garrus comparing war stories/penis size was damned near my favorite exchange in the game.
Yeah, see this was what I was thinking.. I just ask because i'm really excited to start playing but don't want to progress too far
I'd say get it because they made so many unique lines for it, the character's rather hilarious (something sorely lacking in ME3), and if you believe some people (I don't), he comes with the best needle shooter.

Yeah pick up the DLC and then afterwards take a shower for feeling dirty.

This, minus the shower part because this dlc is totally worth it and this content WAS NOT READY to launch with the retail game. It was cut from the main game due to time constraints, so we are lucky we got it at all.

Definitely get Javik. From Ashes is worth $10 and the rest of the game is worth $60, screw the other noise. :D

And make sure to take James on his recruitment mission, he has a great exchange with Liara if you do.

Actually, not true (if some other developers are to be believed). According to others, there's a period of time (a few weeks, maybe a month) where they don't see the game. During this time, they create some DLC. This maybe when From Ashes was created.

Look, in all honesty, I don't care that it came out at launch. I'd just rather it not be on the DAMN DISC (Capcom loves to do this which is why I'm not supporting them). Which it wasn't. If it was, you'd have downloaded a 12kb file, not a ~630MB file.
Is there a point to getting the plot relevant character when
the ending makes the entire plot irrelevant?
Well yea, some people choose to enjoy the other 95% of the game.

Actually, a significant chunk of From Ashes is on-disk already.

And whether it is or not is irrelevant to me. I can't fucking wait for Dark Knight Rises, but that doesn't mean I'd take it a month early, but I have to pay ten dollars for any scene with Gordon in it 'cause they did those last.

Not really a good analogy since Gordon is a recurring character in the series.

No need to beat a dead horse with the From Ashes whining, all he asked was if the DLC was worth it and the general consensus is that Javik is a great character.
Alright, then.

Bane or Catwoman or whoever the fuck else is in the movie. Your quibble misses the point.
You're just not good at using analogies to emphasize your point. If the antagonist isn't in the movie when it's first shown then that's a completely different issue. Catwoman, maybe, if she isn't an integral part of the plot but contributes to the lore.

People can play through the game without Javik and there won't be a significant impact on the game as a whole. The shitty packaging strategy that Bioware came up with was that the more devoted players who care about the extra pieces of lore will buy the collector's edition and get it anyway, and the others/newcomers/casuals could play through without it and grab it later if they wanted to. Dumb on their part? Maybe, but that has been discussed to death. If someone asks if the DLC's content is good/worth it, bringing up the on-disc or not issue is what's irrelevant.

Assets including the character model are on disc. But the contents of the specific mission are not. That's been documented and if you do a little research you'll find this was done for very good, technical reasons. Bottom line is that its good dlc including a good mission and an excellent and meaningful additional squadmate. I couldn't imagine experiencing the game without Prothy.

True, yet on disc or not is not the matter of concern. It's the decision to make loyal fans, the ones that will undoubtedly pick it up, pay for said content instead of doing what they did with ME2, tying it to a new games networked system.

Please 'splain again, my friend? I don't follow.

On a semi-related side note, I'm curious if future larger-scale DLC, like kasumi or shadow broker scale, single player DLC will include online components. I kind of have a feeling that single player dlc and multiplayer dlc will be separate with MP being free for two reasons A) to keep people playing and B) microtransactions = dolla dolla bills, y'all
make-it-rain-guys.gif
. But, we won't see achievements with MP dlc.
Mass Effect 3 isn't really one for charm. Nor is it one for little details.
WWHHHHAaaaaaattttt?!

ME3 has by far the most little details going back through the first two games, the books, the comics, and some outside stuff. PLEASE don't make me nerd rage and make a list.

Not one for charm? there are so many nods, moments, bromances, tearjerks, badassery, and otherwise sweet ass charm in this game i have a devastatingly hard time seeing how you can make that statement.

Would have been cool to have MP specific achievements similar to eye of the hurricane, but I guess it was good that they had more general completion ones that could be earned in either SP or MP

Just on the topic of funny stuff alone the Mass Effect series is full of charm. I'll even give it credit for making fun of itself from time to time. One that made me laugh was when Garrus shouts
"I'm Garrus Vakarian and this is my favorite spot on the Citadel" when you let him win the sniping contest
.

ME2 had other squad member dlc tied with the Cerberus Network. Everyone who bought the game new had that "membership". Instead of doing something similar with ME3 they decided to make new copies buy it for $10. I got the CE so I didn't have this dilemma but I can see the point of view from a person who picked up a new copy of the game at full retail value only having to put down another 10 bucks.

OK, I got ya. Yeah, that is a good point. I do like the membership path vs. individual pay-for DLC. The Cerberus Network was a neat little perk that brought some decent free stuff, I suppose. While not dlc related, I liked the constant feed with news updates. Too bad they didn't do that with ANN right on the start page on ME3.

Took a break from other things and got on tonight to finish the Gold extraction requirement.

Noticed there are still a lot of people that quit after the last credit wave, some saying "Thanks" or just cursing as they leave.

They do it enough that I'm starting to think there is bug that lets you keep the credits.
Personally, if we didn't have the Online Pass trash, this problem wouldn't be rearing its ugly head.
personally, if we didn't have piracy on such a grand scale this problem wouldn't be rearing its ugly head.

you can't blame them for trying creative ways to battle the used game market. we already can get $10-$20 on preorder GC's and flipping DLC codes.

MP - rather sick F/W/G, 3 geth, 1 salarian engine. The amount of shield drainage, stunning, and healing was insane. we beat it 23:50. I was like...whaaaa. I hope there's another MP DLC installment coming up. I'm starting to run out of fun and effective ways to put down the enemy. ...and full quarian melee is not both fun and effective.

Is all that in regard to the discussion on From Ashes?

Because if not, carry on.

But if it is... that's silly as all fuck, yo.

Right, right. Like what the Xbox720/PS4 is going to do. Prevent used/borrowed games from being played on their system. I'm sure that'll stop piracy.
Well yea, some people choose to enjoy the other 95% of the game.
Except not all of that 95% is enjoyable. I'd say...75%, maybe 80%. There are some clear and definite lows.

Also out of that 75% - 80% most of that seems like it was just a copy and paste of ME2 with some edits done. I would have liked to see some new armor sets and a better way to get missions. I have a bigger issue now with that than I do with the ending. I know I missed out on about half the game due to the way you get the missions. ME3 just seems like a dumbed down version of ME2. ME2 felt the same compared to ME but that seemed to work. By that I'm saying ME2 felt more like a third person shooter than the RPG that was ME. I'm not big into RPGs anymore however ME I liked. I would have liked for ME2 to have kept the RPG feel that ME had but ME2 was still a great game. ME3 to me just felt like the team really didn't try as much as the did on the first 2 games.

hey man, it's all good...we each have our own perspective on things. agreed or not.

Was a lot of fun trying to attempt a few Gold runs this weekend with fellow friends and CAGs. Last night was even better you know since it was on Silver and doable lol. Still I think getting to wave 9 on Gold Friday night was a reasonable achievement to acknowledge (ah so close) haha. I was digging using my Turian Soldier and Marksman, would eat through a parade of Pyros in seconds! :bouncy:

I also unlocked the Carnifex, holy shit people weren't kidding that gun owns.

so BB currently is running a promo on BF3 for $19.99. Is the online pass inside the game what you need to unlock the Soldier w/carnage? (assuming every EA game comes w/an online pass now)

Anyone interested in doing gold runs to try unlocking the unwavering achievement? I could see it taking forever if stuck with random people but with a dedicated group, it shouldn't be too bad.

@ IanK - you done with Prototype yet? there are n-m-e's that need to feel the beauty.

still no javelin. Alliance wanted to be cute and gave me a Saber...not exactly the sharp pointy thing I was hoping to get from my hard earned credits.

I've been seeing new places ppl take cover in FWG. It actually seems to be pretty decent based on the class dynamic...it also seemed to go faster by a few minutes. Geth take a lot more crossfire as well...only time we had a problem was when they wanted us to hack on the flight pad. Geth infiltrator rockin the Viper VII too.

Yeah, shipping it back to Gamefly today. It was actually pretty damned good; fixed everything I hated about the first.

I'll try to be on more this week. Could use some good packs. I got nothing but repeat character cards this weekend.

You mess with the Saber? I hear good things.
