Mass Effect - Gen. Discussion & Info - Pinnacle Station DLC Now Available 400pts

Yep, you start at the exact save point. Save often! I had a few hundred saves by the time I finished the game as I was anal about saving as I hate having to replay any section of any game.

I think I will. I thought the game would reload after certain progressions but I guess not. I am going to have a truckload of save numbers then.

Holy shit! A few hundred?!........I barely broke 100 the other day and thought that was a lot. I've been playing a few hours every day for the past 2 weeks, guess I have a lot more exploring to do.

I put around 35 hours into the game, plus around an hour and a half into the DLC. I just saved obsessively after every battle pretty much.

Also save after anything you wouldn't want to have to do over, like driving across an entire planet maybe. Those one-shot rocket/sniper kills can happen unexpectedly. :hot:

Between my four characters and the DLC episode, I probably put close to a hundred hours into the game. It's so great.

Exactly. I saved pretty much every time I found/scanned something on a planet so I wouldn't have to drive over there again, then saved when I got close to a base so I could start right at the battle if I got killed etc.

I've only done sidequests here and there. Right now I am on Noveria. Can I still get the completionist achievement? Are there sidequests that I missed and can no longer do?

How do I get the throw etc achievements? Does that have to do with your class, or can my team members use the skill for me to get the achievement?

Anything else I should know up to this point? Right now I'm level 22.

I'm pretty sure you can do all the sidequests up until you've finished four of the planets. There are a couple of points-of-no-return after that, so keep that in mind.

For the ability achievements it has to be your main character, but uses carry over to replays. So, if you use throw 74 times and beat the game, you just need to use it one more time in your next game to get the achievement. But! It's better to do it before your next game so you can have it as a bonus ability.

I think it actually keeps track of uses if you reload an old save or use a different main character, so you could always just do that if you're desperate.

I read on gamefaqs that I only need to do 50 sidequests to get the achievement. Is this true?

If i were you, I wouldn't do all the sidequests unless you really like achievements. Most of them are really boring and their all pretty much the same.

Well I really like the game so I feel like doing them. For the collecting sidequests, can I skip those all together or do I have to do them to get the achievement?

I thought the sidequests, along with the in-game glossary, added a lot of fascinating background info and insight to the characters and universe. Gameplay-wise they got a bit tedious towards the end, but I loved all the little details you learned.

For the collections, you could always save those for last if you're really averse to doing them, since I think there are enough non-collection quests to get the achievement. Most of the time when you're on one of the other sidequests though, you don't have to go too far out of your way to scan another mineral or artifact, so I'd say you might as well. (Plus you get a little XP bonus for each scan.) There are also more than enough of each item out there to meet your quota, so in most cases you won't have to go to every last planet to complete them.

Good God what in the fuck is up with the UNC Rogue VI sidequest? I've cleared out 2 of the towers but the third is a complete bitch. The enemies swarm me in the hallway, I can't close the door to regenerate health (they just open it up) and they continue to one hit kill me with those annoying rockets they shoot. It wouldn't be so damn hard if they shot those things and you instantly die. I have all 3 of my party members with shotguns. This is straight up aggravating.

What kind of set up are you using?

I'd advise bringing some tech to nuetralize the shields on the droids, then boosting your own. Worst case scenario, run all the way out, recoup and head back in to take out what's left of them.
Wouldn't you have thought we'd hear about ME2 by now? I'm hoping the trilogy hasn't been derailed.

Thought there was "lots of dlc" in the pipe....?
Mass Effect has only been out since November... so, really, 9 months isn't a ton of time to be worried about a sequel that we know is coming, or about DLC that we already got some of.

Anyway, ME2 is coming, it's just a matter of when. Since it's not this year (obviously), my guess is it'll be a tentpole game for next fall. They already have the engine, so that's half the battle. If there's any delay it'll be because of the EA buyout, which might just mess with the business side for a bit. In fact, that's what I'm most curious about... whether EA will force ME2 multi-platform or not.

In terms of the DLC, what we've gotten is fine for 9 months. While I'm not sure where the 'lots of DLC' quote came from, but I'd be surprised if we even get more, or at least more than maybe one more. There hasn't been too much in the way of 'add-on' content in console games, so I'm happy that we even got anything. That, and I'm sure it's all dependent on how well Bring Down the Sky sold.

... sorry. I talk too much.
I have Shepard (soldier), Ashley, and Garrus as my party.
Hmm... unless you're just looking to romance Ashley, she's pretty redundant. Can Garrus even train in shotgun? He's a beast as a sniper, but I'm pretty sure he trains in assault rifle for close combat, give him a good AR and he should hold up a little better. Honestly, I'd probably go full AR's for that team, or two AR's and one shotgun.

If you really want to keep up the Combat abilities, I'd switch her out for Wrex and gain a shotgun-juggernaut with biotics. If you insist in keeping the same team (still capable), using the power wheel to issue commands (and pause the action) is your best option.

Place your teamates midway through the corridor, and have them hold position, that'll provide you with extra cover. As soon as the action starts, turn on your soldiers invulnerability powers; after the power activates, immediately power wheel again and use your weapon's Overkill feature. Ashley may survive, Garrus is almost guaranteed to die. If you can't kill them all, run like hell to the main entrance.

You don't even need her in your party to romance her. Just have to talk to her after every story mission, choose the right options in the dialog trees etc. Same with Liara.

Ideally, you want a soldier, a biotic and a tech person in your party. I used Shepherd (solider), Liara and Talia most of the game.

I just completed Noveria. I've been doing a lot of sidequests as well. I'm level 37. Will I be able to make it to level 50 before the end of the game?

I tried playing this starting this afternoon, and decided I wanted to play through KOTOR: The Sith Lords instead.

Never did finish that one. Hell, might even go all the way back to KOTOR, or be a brave soul and open my sealed $5 copy of Jade Empire.

But one thing I noticed: why's this considered an "RPG"? It's more of a slower Uncharted/Gears of War style of combat. Not what I think of in an RPG - I think of Blue Dragon/Lost Odyssey, which we haven't seen much of on this gen of consoles.

You take what you can get, I suppose.

You're in pretty good shape. If you do most of the sidequests you should have no trouble reaching 50. Also, I forget if it was mentioned recently but you get more XP for killing stuff on foot than in the Mako. There are a lot of big enemies on Virmire, so weaken them with the Mako and then hop out to kill them. Just watch out for those anti-vehicle rockets. :hot:

(EDIT: Damn, post in-between. This is in response to Myke.)

I agree entirely. It's an 'action game with RPG elements', at best.

It's like when people are all like "best RPG EVAR?!?!?!" "OMG!!! ZELDA!!!". I hate those people. Zelda isn't an RPG. ESPECIALLY the 3D ones.

So, yeah, I give you that one... Mass Effect isn't what I'd classically call an RPG, either. I went from re-playing ME to playing Eternal Sonata. People really want me to call those the same thing? Har. ;)

I love the game, but the frame rates are TERRIBLE. I'll just be running around and BAM it hits. It kind of takes away from the game when it's happening like every minute or two. Did they take off points for that in reviews? Mass Effect could have used some touching up before it was sent out.

I'm not sure how much more sidequests I need to do before I get the Completion achievement. It seems like I have done quite a bit.

I consider it a RPG. Hell, I consider it a RPG more than something like Eternal Sonata or Final Fantasy. You create your character, and are able to affect the story depending on decisions you make. You can choose how you want your character to develop, etc. Also the focus is clearly on the story.

Yeah, Mass Effect is definitely an RPG. It has the stats, attacks are still "dice roll based" in terms of how much damage they do, whether the enemy blocks/dodges etc.

Just because you control the combat rather than just boringly picking commands from a menu and seeing what happens doesn't make in not an RPG in my view.

But I hate debates over game labels, so people can call it whatever they want and I'll call it an RPG anyway!

Are the "collecting" missions (rocks, etc) essential to getting level 50? I've done most of the sidequests and am only level 40. I haven't done Virmire yet or Bring Down the Sky.

I just beat the game. Took me 29 hours. I finished at level 49. I'm going to play again on Hardcore and choose all the renegade side of the conversations/events.

Thanks, I fixed it. In the future maybe 'disc edition' really will be something common as digital downloads take over.

Maybe. But one thing I don't get is why the downloadable content is one Disc 2 and not Disc 1, or some kind of downloadable code.

The question I have is will this version fix some of the problems that were tweaked for the PC version? Will those fixes even make sense on the XBox? I haven't played the PC version, so I'm not sure what all they included.

I find it interesting that the late adopters always get the bargain... Well I guess, I'll become a late adopter.

Anyway, I sold my copy of Mass Effect awhile ago, and quite frankly for 20 bucks this is pretty much a bargain for a great RPG game. It's by the company that brought you KOTOR and Jade Empire (can't remember their name)

If you haven't played Mass Effect yet, go and get this.

Bioware is the name that you are thinking of.

No offence, but this is basically common sense. Late adopters get the bargains simply because they are LATE adopters. By the time they buy a product, it is old and the buzz has died.

It's frustrating feeling like you get no "reward" for supporting a product early in its life, but you really just have to accept that the "reward" is being able to enjoy it right away. The financial benefits of being a late adopter are tremendous...if you can condition yourself to being ok with being late to the party. ;)

It seems like what they have done with some of the other Platinum Hits titles and include the DLC extras when they change the packaging to the Platinum Hits border.

awesome, I was really close to picking up this game with RZ certs I got from BB. Glad to see another "gold" edition come to the xbox. This is usually how I pick up my PC games, glad to see waiting on games does pay off.
