Megazell's Free And Legal PC Games List!

fuck yes! Good find on Soundless Mountain II I am a big fan of the game that inspired it. About to give this little "de-make" a run today. Also good find on Fiend! I love HP Lovecraft cheesery and I was really enjoyed the "idea" of the Penumbra series but the combat killed it.

Sahhhh-weet!

EDIT: OK, after further tinkering it seems no one really knows the full set of moves for MKP4.1 for instance Kano's fatality is only featured in MK1. I haven't tested all of these but this seems to be the best bet. Maybe add the spoiler to the game's section?
Mercy can only be given in the third round of each match just after
the announcer says "Finish Him/Her". Then hold RUN and hit D,D,D,D, and release RUN.(out of jump)

Babalities & Friendships can only be performed if you have won the
match without using the BL button.
Animalities can be performed only if you first show Mercy to your opponent,
then enter the appropriate keystroke.

Cool find. Perhaps, if the code can be located changes can me be made by a member of this forum. Currently, I am working on a mod/level for 'Secret Maryo Chronciles' and perhaps 'Runman.'

Thanks Megazell. I started play DDO and now I know why MMO games are addictive. Anyone who wants to run a little, just PM me and I'll probably be able to get on if I get about a day's notice.

Yeah, I don't rock MMORPGs too tough because of the addictive nature of it. But I am more than glad to play for a few rounds with you on Sunday 10:30 PM EST?

Jeebs, I was about to suggest posting Spelunky in this thread, but you beat me to it by about 16ish days...

Anyways, hella-fun game to play. Never feels too cheap, and it's the only game that I found a level of enjoyment in dying. I "discovered" this game while watching ByteJacker, and I'm in love with the randomly generated dungeons of the game. This is a must-play with a gamepad, and everybody who reads this needs to install and play this game.

Hell, I'll double-dip and PAY for this game when it comes out on the XBL network. It's that good.

Played a bit or Requiem, the so called "horror MMO". IMHO, there is nothing really "scary" about it, and the only thing it has going for it is the amount of blood and gore in the game. Maybe there is a horror aspect of the game that I never got to(the monsters that appears during the "midnight" hours are pretty insane/gruesome looking/tough though, and it provided a good challenge), but nothing I experience in my week-long play through that made me stay.

Too much games in my backlog, but I'm tempted to try my hands on some Mugen goodness since I'm the only one in apt that love playing 2D fighters. Any suggestions on Mugan games to start with (I'm really into the Ryu/Kens of the fighting world)?

I am a huge SNK fan. I like Street Fighter and I grew up hustling money off of Ken in arcades...nothing beats SNK for me. My favorite character is Iori. He fights like I would in real life if I could throw flames and such from my hands.

SNK vs Street Fighter

and

DC vs Marvel vs Capcom

Personally, I never got into 3D fighting games. I tried them all. I liked 'Soul Calibur' for a bit but the big problem I have with 3D fighting games is that it looks like I can go anywhere...yet I am limited by where I can move and attack from. Games like 'Power Stone' and 'Mini Fighter' try to address this but in the end going 3D with a fighting games still feels weird for me. The only other game I can think of that did a good job with a fighting system in the 3D world is 'Shemue' being able to run around and jump off walls and use objects in the back ground for cover and what not felt right. SF4 looks nice but that's a 2D fighting game with shiny on it.

Well some feedback so far:

Voxelstein - I really liked the concept, but it seems really buggy. It may be because I run windows 7 now, but it freezes at random times, after levels are done, etc.

Dead Frontier - Really liking this one, me and my friends are settled on playing this as our weekly game for now.

Battlefield Heroes - Don't know if this is on the list, but I am trying this out this week - a cartoony take on the franchise.

Funny enough, Yahoo had an article on Free vs. Fee games yesterday.

Dwarf Fortress

Dwarf Fortress is a highly-acclaimed and complex roguelike game that also combines aspects of strategy and "god" games. There are two modes: Fortress Mode, where you take run a settlement of dwarfs, and Adventure Mode, which is like a typical roguelike game.

Megazell's Comment - OK. I am going to kill the person that reccomend me this game. I finally sat down and gave it some time today while I waiting on the phone for some nonsense. Anyway, it quite good but it won't be for everyone. At first I was put off by it's graphics and gameplay but after giving it a shot (after several people recommending it) it got to me :) Researching this game reminded me why I can never really get into video game RPGs/MMORPGs like I could get into table top pen and paper RPGs - Rogue-like - If you don't know the term look it up. I actually forgot that term until I read an article on this game.

Vox will no doubt have problems in Win7 - Run it in incompatibly mode for XP or older and see if that helps.

I like Dead Frontier but I never found others that were into it. Post your game times and I will join you. I personally like it alot but I am a dead head.

Battlefield Heroes is posted - Don't forget all of the games are listed by genre and in abc order on the first page of this thread. Currently we are at 372 games.

Yeah? I have to locate that articles because I am getting a lot of PMs on FB ever since I started a FB group around this concept.
http://videogames.yahoo.com/events/fee-games-vs-free-games

Here is the link - it is really more of a "like this, play this" list than a real article, but it was on the main page yesterday.

I'll let you know once we nail down a set time to play Dead Frontier... I'm a big zombie fan so that plays into it a lot.
That was a cool articles. Outside of that stuff that's been covered here the rest of that stuff comes laden with ads and pop-ups.

Raq Nar - lvl 4 Barb

Raqreck - lvl 2 Rogue

I plan on DEL the rogue once we get the other cag players up to lvl 4.

Megazell's Comment - The first link has 2 games. Part 2 at the top and part 1 at the bottom. Part 2 is still being worked on with updates to levels that can be dl'ed. Part 1 is a complete game.

Mondo Agency

Puzzle
Single Player - Yes

You are AGENT-65386. Your superiors believe that someone is plotting to kill the president, but they have no idea who or why. And for some reason, the president seems vital to the world's very existence. It's your task to find out who it is that seeks to destroy everyone so that you can save the world from it's pending doom.

Mondo Agency is a sequel to Mondo Medicals. Features pixel artwork by Cow and music by Aaron Kurtz.

Megazell's Comment - 'Mondo Agency is a really shaky and nifty game that I totally recommend. It’s got crazy puzzles, freakish pseudo environments, seizure inducing deaths, driveling cut scenes, bad spelling, and of course natives. Combined, the sum of this game’s parts are better than their separate forms. If I told much more I’d spoil the fun, but a word of caution; lower the volume a bit.'

5 Days A Stranger
Trilby's Notes
6 Days A Sacrifice
7 Days A Skeptic

Adventure
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

5 Days a Stranger chronicles the story of a gentleman thief known as Trilby and four others fighting an unknown terror in DeFoe Manor. The story progresses over 5 days, with more story being revealed each day. Dream sequences typically space out the transitions between the events of different days, it has an intuitive version of the AGS interface that ties in with the unique feel of the game.

Trilby's Notes is the third game released in the Chzo Mythos, but second in order of game chronology. It stands as a true sequel to the events of 5 Days a Stranger, and a prequel to the events of 7 Days a Skeptic.

The story follows the gentleman thief Trilby to an isolated Welsh hotel, seeking the idol which wreaked supernatural havoc in the first game. Believing that there is more to the story of Defoe Manor than he had previously thought, Trilby wishes to destroy the idol once and for all, but is suddenly caught up in a series of strange and gruesome events at the hotel that cause him to start shifting randomly between two parallel worlds.

6 Days A Sacrifice is the fourth and final installment of the John DeFoe series, which thus far has encompassed 5 Days A Stranger, 7 Days A Skeptic and Trilby's Notes. Since this game is intended to tie up the loose ends left behind by the three previous episodes, it is highly recommended that you play through all of them first.

7 Days a Skeptic takes place nearly four hundred years after the last installment, by which time mankind has begun to further explore the universe. The game chronicles the story of a veteran psychiatrist, Dr. Jonathan Somerset, and five others on board the spaceship Mephistopheles as they face the same mysterious entity that haunted the protagonists of the first game. By this time the events of the original game have become an urban myth and no-one knows what really happened back at DeFoe Manor. 7 Days a Skeptic draws several parallels with its predecessor, using elements such as dream sequences between each day as well as using similar plot revelations.

Megazell's Comment - 4 stories that pull you into an adventure game that takes you to different 'worlds' of influence. This game is a must play for adventure fans.

Doom 6666

First Person Shooter

And yet another remake... It is really brave to take-on and try to remake such a classic game as Doom but Henrique has done a surprisingly good job of it! Doom is all about running, shooting, exploring and shooting some more and we have those elements here also.

The game is in full 3D and you use the mouse to look around, the cursor keys to move and A and Z to jump and crouch. You start with a few weapons including a shotgun and a sniper rifle and the weapons have an alternate fire mode as well as standard. All in all this is a superb remake and well worth testing out.

Megazell's Comment - The game does not allow you to change your controls. Which is a huge suck factor for those that play FPS in non-traditional formats. I personally had to use JoyToKey to enjoy this game.

Controls:
Mouse = aim
Arrows = move
A = jump
Z = duck
Space = open door, etc
0...9 = select weapon
Left Ctrl or left mouse = fire
Left Alt = weapon special function
Enter = reload weapon
Esc = back to menu

We are about to hit 400 games!

So tell me, people - What kind of games would you like to see more of as time goes by?

My target goal for this thread is 9000! For obvious internet reasons :)

Ultimate Mugen 2009 is actually pretty well made. I have decided to make it my personal project to code it to perfection. With that said this is my finding so far from doing some tinkering.

This version of mugen only recgonizes .ogg files for music. The stages it was launched with are edited for MP3...which is why on Vista and Win 7 stages have no sound.

The format for the stages are not all standard. Out of 74 stages that it was launched with only 64 are recognized by the engine.

Also the rendering engine was made to work with high end machines and I have found some edits that make it looks ungodly beautiful on my rig.

I will update the post with a patch and move the game to Top Pick once I am done.

You can also check the first page of this thread to see if this game was listed :)

It's in order by genre and alphabetical.

Going to give this a spin and see how it is. I know of few co-op games that I did not put that I will put on now, hope you enjoy them.

As always, great job, loving a lot of games listed so far. I remember getting that Hero Quest a while ago and losing it, so it was great to find it again!

A suggestion: Would it be worth it to have a section for web based or browser based games? I would love something to do when I'm bored at work. Do sites like Kongregate take care of that for people or are there other options out there?

After alot of work it's finally here, the sequel to Madness 4 Lethal Tournaments. This game is pure multiplayer based; so get yourself a mate, choose some weapons to play with and pick one of the 11 zones. Now go spammin' your opponent with the most brutal weapons; or choose to be the sneaky man and dispatch the guy with rifles and knifes.

Yeah, it's all there, even chain combo's and other kinds of combo's to achieve (burning combo, musket mortars, ninja style and others)! There are some extras to be found and there are all sorts of tricks with the gameplay to spice up the fight! Split screen goodness!

Megazell's Comment - Vista has a issue with latency in this game. Be warned.

Yes, I think so. Even if it doubled up categories, it would be an easy way to find something to do at work.

Yeah, I would say you've hit your MMO quoto, Mega.

I prefer the single-player stuff, myself.

-3rd/1st person survival horror games.
-3rd person action/adventure games featuring melee combat
-racing games with weird premises (Twisted Metal-esque). If the cars blow up good, I'm all for it.
-games that have gone abandonware. I love a good retail production value.

If the game is abandonware that means it most likely does not work with modern tech...I won't be posting those. The MUGEN errors some people are getting are more than enough for me.

I would check out the MMORPG section for now. Everything else must be installed to run.

I was thinking about sub section for each genre but it would take too much time for me organize and post.

Maybe one day when I have a few hours to kill at an air port or something I could do it.

Thread Update!

400 Games!

Thanks for the input people.

There are a slew of games to come. I will be cutting back on MMORPGs from here on out.

Now, if you are playing a free and legal MMORPG and think it's worth a gander...feel free to mention it here and I will give it a whirl to see if it's worth posting.

I am going to be making a 'Back To The Main List' button so that every post with games has a quick link back to genre list. I am not a graphic expert so if anyone wants to donate some art for the button link...PM me :) Otherwise it's going to be Mspaint goodness :)

This Sunday I would like to have FPS night with Nexuiz or AVA @ 9:00 PM EST - Let me know if you are down for that.

Mr. Jonathan Whiting of Stalwart, Collateral, Love Letter - oh, a whole bunch of games really - has released a couple of smaller more prototypey sorts of games. One of these is Antagonist, and it's about running for your life from huge spinning top things that want to grind you into the ground.

The protagonist's movement is purposely awkward, with each jump slowing you down and bringing you closer to your doom. The spinning top baddies will warp into existence around you and hunt your down until you're out of reach. It's a bit tense, and well worth a play. - IndieGames.com

Karoshi 2.0

Action/Platformer

The basic idea behind the original Karoshi was completely counter-intuitive to most games: in every level you must FIND A WAY TO KILL YOURSELF. It was harder than it seemed! In Karoshi 2.0, creator Jesse Venbrux extends that metaphor across 42 more levels.

Includes level editor and timed version of the original Karoshi.

Megazell's Comment - This game feels like some “I wanna be the anti-guy”, because the game keeps you from killing yourself in ways on the same hilarious-level as 'I wanna be the guy' tries to kill you.

Sooo much to look over.... Thank you for putting all of this together.

Any chance you could use an asterisk or something to mark off your top picks on the main list? It'd be cool to see your favorites right off the bat, instead of finding them after the jump.
If the game is abandonware that means it most likely does not work with modern tech...I won't be posting those.
I was talking about games you posted like Psi-Ops and Area 51 which were once full-fledged retail releases.
I was talking about games you posted like Psi-Ops and Area 51 which were once full-fledged retail releases.
Those are freeware releases that were made on purpose by the developers/publishers.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abandonware

Abandonware is a term used to describe computer software that is no longer sold or supported, or whose copyright ownership may be unclear for various reasons. While the term has been applied largely to older games, other classes of software (such as productivity applications or utility software) are sometimes described as such.

Definitions of "abandoned" vary; generally, it refers to software no longer available for legal purchase, or of a certain age. Software companies may change their names, go bankrupt, enter into mergers, or cease to exist for a variety of reasons. When this happens, product rights are usually transferred to another company that may not sell or support the software acquired.

In most cases, software classed as abandonware is not in the public domain, as it has never had its original copyright revoked. Unlike Freeware or opensource, abandonware is NOT released to be publicly released and company still owns its distributional rights.

Most abandonware sites post/upload games whose companies are no longer active. It's a murky area but 9/10 the games are not really legal and you have to tweak them to work on modern technology.

A good example of what happens with abandonware that sucks is when the company returns and makes all other existing copies of it's product 'illegal.'

Which you are going to see happen more and more with companies like GOG, STEAM, Onlive, D2D and others fighting over publishers/developers libraries in order to boast their numbers of perceived content.

Now when a game is said to be freeware it can not be unsaid (legally) to not be freeware unless the original release of freeware comes with a time stamp...like Farcry, Prince of Persia, Age of Conan...and others.

I'll look into it. With the list getting bigger and bigger it's going to get harder for me to go back and change that list with little things like that but when I add the 'Go back to the main list' button...I will look into it.

Don't let my personal picks steer you in the wrong direction...a lot of games here others like that I don't like so much...so I would also try the ones that other mentioned in these pages too.
