A Fistful of Cows is a new hack and slash video game. It is currently being developed by a group of students as their final project for Universidad Pompeu Fabra’s “Video Game Development” Master’s Degree.

Megazell's Comment - This games does not really fit into 3rd person shooters but for right now it's the best I can do. I may make a hack/slash genre section soon.

Raptr is a free social utility for gaming made by people who love games. We allow you to connect with your gaming friends and see what the world is playing.

Raptr allows you to chat in-game with all of your friends from the top IM services (AIM, Yahoo, MSN, Facebook, Google Talk, Xfire, and ICQ) in one friends list. You can even chat with your friends on Xbox Live! With the Raptr client, you will no longer need to have multiple IM clients running to challenge or invite your friends to play a game with you.

No more alt-tabbing to chat with your friends. With Raptr you can chat with all your friends across all IM networks without losing a moment.

Megazell's Comment - Xfire, SeeMePlayMe, Gamespy and STEAM also allowed you to communicate without having to alt+tab.

Raptr lets you add your Xbox Live, Playstation, and Steam accounts to see what your friends are playing all the time.

Raptr will even let you know the map, your ping, and the game mode before you jump in.

Megazell's Comment - Xfire allowed you to do this also. Not sure about the rest.

Whether you play PC, Xbox 360, or Flash games, you can use Raptr to automatically share what you're playing and how well you're doing. You can broadcast your playing status to all of your friends on the top IM services as well as friends on Facebook, Twitter, and FriendFeed.

I Fought the Law, and the Law One

Adventure
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Science Fiction

Ben Chandler, arguably one of the pioneers in indie adventure gaming of recent times, has released the first game in a new series called ~airwave~. I Fought the Law, and the Law One follows the story of Elodie Major, the DJ at an independent radio station in Wave.

Unfortunately, a mainstream record label (booo!) is causing trouble in town, enforcing laws that are holding the independent talent back. This is all classic Ben304, with lots of great dialogue and tricky puzzles to solve. What's great is that throughout play, your radio station plays (with music written by Sebastian and David Pfaller) and DJ Zak talks crap between songs. If it's not your cup of tea, you can always find a radio and turn it off. - IndieGames.com

Death On Stage

Adventure
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Drama

Death on Stage is a 2D adventure game made in under four weeks for the monthly AGS competition, which also happens to be Duncan's first completed game to be released to the public. The story is about a young magician named Stanley Biscuit, who discovers on stage that his performance isn't drawing enough applause from the audience. The theatre manager is quick to point this out to him, but he is also willing to give Stanley a second chance to impress if he dresses up and improves his act a little.

The game is surprisingly well-made for a first effort, and by the end of the adventure you'll be wanting to keep an eye on the developer's future projects if Death on Stage is any indication of what might come from him next. - IndieGames.com

Ultima IV

RPG
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Fantasy

Ultima IV differs from most RPGs in that the game's story does not center on asking a player to overcome a tangible ultimate evil.

After the defeat of each of the members of the triad of evil in the previous three Ultima games, the world of Sosaria underwent some radical changes in geography: three quarters of the world disappeared, continents rose and sunk, new cities were built to replace the ones that were lost. Eventually the world, now unified in Lord British's rule, was renamed Britannia. Lord British felt the people lacked purpose after their great struggles against the triad were over, and he was concerned with their spiritual well-being in this unfamiliar new age of relative peace, so he proclaimed the Quest of the Avatar: He needed someone to step forth and become the shining example for others to follow.

The Great Gatsby

Action/Platformer
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Fantasy

The Great Gatsby is a free-to-play Flash game adaptation of a literary classic with the same name, featuring NES-style graphics and a surprisingly catchy chiptune soundtrack to complement this four-level 2D platformer. The developers have gone to great lengths in trying to make it look like an authentic NES cart release, up to and including manual scans and a Japanese cover illustration to complete the package.

The game itself doesn't disappoint either. Playing as Nick Carraway, you can throw your hat at enemies, collect coins for points, or grab power-up items for extra health and temporary invincibility. Each stage takes about a minute or two to beat, and if you reach the end of the game without losing a single life you'll be treated to a slightly extended ending for a reward.

Bennu

Action/Platformer
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - Yes

Theme: Fantasy

Originally an Xbox Live Indie Games title, Bennu is now available to download as a freeware title for Windows PC. You control a swinging bird's head that can attach itself to the surrounding level and flip up to touch and remove coloured blocks.

The idea is to fall into a flame, then touch all of the blocks of that colour. Every block must be cleared to progress. There's also a two player co-op mode, in which each player has a specific colour and can only remove their blocks. It's all a little fiddly to begin with, but definitely worth giving a try. - IndieGames.com
Steam Users' Forums: Free Steam games list
Thanks. That list has been posted already by itself and in pieces on this thread and also in the STEAM thread.
My bad, I meant to send you this. There's just too many to see if they're all listed here, but you should know.

http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=920019
NP, dude.

Most of those games have already been posted except for a few of them that have a lot of errors on XP, Vista and Windows 7 or I have not had time to try out.

Also a few of those games are labeled incorrectly for example

Disciple is not freeware. The link posted for it leads to Clanwars.

He posted 4 games that I don't have on my list and I added to my stack awhile back but I have yet to get around to them but with your post I will try to move them up.

Abuse is one game that every so often I go to try out and outside of the Dosbox version there seems to be a serious problem with it but I will see if it work though I doubt acidplay has changed their files on it.

Been really busying getting my graphic novel completed but once my schedule gets back to I'll be uploading some more gems.

I may like your software reviews more than the games haha! I would have never heard of Joy2Key and now Raptr has my interest.

Kirbyvania and Gatsby are ridiculous.

Cool. Most of my reviews outside of the Comment section come from other sites and/or the actual game description from the developer sites/readme.

For those that don't know Joy2Key is listed in the original post under free software.

My backlog of games to post is getting crazy. Going to try to post some tomorrow.

That's cool, I'll continue to keep an eye out to help keep this list growing. It's pretty sweet what you're doing here and I link this list to particularly cheap ass gamer friends of mine from time to time. Personally I play a lot of PC games with good replay value such as Blizzard games and RPGs. I buy a lot of my games via steam sales and gog.com so I haven't really done much testing of free games myself to give any input, but I probably will when I'm out of the Marines and in college and require a strict budget.

Abuse

Shooter/Platformer
Single Player - Yes

Netbook Friendly

Theme: Science Fiction

Abuse is a run and gun video game developed by Crack dot Com and published by Origin Systems/Electronic Arts. It was released in 1996, and originally ran on DOS and Linux operating systems. An improved port of the game was released for Mac OS by Bungie Studios and for the Acorn Archimedes by R-Comp Interactive. In 2009 it was ported to AmigaOS 4. It has also been ported to the iPhone/iPod Touch platform. The game's source code, along with some of the Shareware content, has been in the public domain since the late 1990s.

Megazell's Comment - This game requires a bit of setup but since it's been asked by more than one person to be posted - It shall. You need to go into the installation folder and click SETUP. You have to setup your digital sound for game fx sounds and midi sound for music. You also have to create a shortcut if you want to select it from your desktop and startmenu. You can right click the shortcut and add the icon that comes with the game. A bit of work but it's a great and classic game.

Reverse Order

Puzzle
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Other

Reverse Order is an intriguing puzzle variation of the classic board game Reversi, where players are supposed to arrange a set of black and white pieces alternately in an attempt to match the pattern laid out on the board to the left side of the screen. Normally this wouldn't pose too much of a challenge, but the usual rules of Reversi still applies here and pieces will get turned over whenever a capture condition is met.

You can play the levels in any order, and solved puzzles will have a Japanese character in blue instead of a red one to indicate that you've not completed a particular challenge. There's even a level editor included if you want to have a go at creating your own puzzles. - IndieGames.com

Yourglass

Theme: Time

Yourglass is a two-player game of giving inspired by one Mr Joy Bhattacherjee. An hourglass spins in the middle of the screen, and each player attempts to pour all of the grain into their opponent's half.

Tapping left and right will make the hourglass spin, but if you tap down (or S for player two) and then tap a direction, you'll nudge it with far more force. As the time-keeper rotates, the grain will falls into either blue or the red player's side, spelling disaster for that person. All the while, some very gentlemanly banter is passed back and forth.

Great concept and lovingly polished - grab a friend and try this one out. - IndieGames.com

Lake Queen

Theme: Horror
Theme: Mystery

Another sad dusk sets on a wide lonely shire. Long shadows of old birch trees and stumps are dragged through a swampy plain, where life died. Corrupt woods stick out as skeleton hands, that did not catch the grass and sank forgotten all the way to the bottom. Light dies after plain horizon, nor moon shines through the darkness, silent cool fogs, but there is a cry from the behind. Northern country of infinite lakes, impenetrable swamps, forbidden corner where only the Death rules. Even wind avoid the emptiness, it has no one's hair to stroke, no one to sing to. Stars do not look here, light only during summer, there is night since autumn and cold and echoes of silent cry that stays here forever to talk about unhappy events of a mythical Lake Kingdom...

Brad Borne's Mirror's Edge 2D...With the support of publisher Electronic Arts, Borne has combined the ludicrous physics of his own Fancy Pants Adventure with the stylized world of Mirror's Edge to produce a joyful ode to side-scrolling platforming. For many of us, this is what the commercial 3D game should have been. Just give this a plot (hold the ham) and a few more urban playgrounds to explore, and it would be a dream game. As it is, it's a marketing tool done absolutely right. - Jayisgames.com

Megazell's Comment - I had this game on my list since it was reviewed on JayisGames back in 2009. Man, I finally gave it a spin and it is great. Good action, pacing and music.

Press X or C to jump. Run as far as you can!

I made Canabalt in 5 very long days (at least 60 hours) – 1 day at the start of the month, two days at PromJam, and then this weekend. Danny B made the music for it tonight. It follows the theme (loosely I am sure!) by using only one button to interact, and by using only 6 colors to display everything. Also, the gameplay and graphics are under 100kb, the other 3MB is all sound files. - Developer

S.H.O.C Trooper - The Zoa Campaign

Shooter/Top Down
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Science Fiction

SHOC Trooper is an isometric exploration shooter that feels rather amateurish, yet enjoyable enough. You are the SHOC Trooper, and you are set on various missions to kill aliens and clones and other sci-fi thingies.

The controls feel a little wrong, and it can be difficult to walk in the direction you actually want to go, but otherwise it's solid entertainment. The graphics look rather retro, and the game doesn't pretend to be anything more than a mindless blaster, with silly voice-overs and simple puzzles. Worth checking out, especially since it took developer Ruben around a year to create. - IndieGames.com
