Megazell's Free And Legal PC Games List!
Found something else...
http://www.overclock.net/pc-games/231674-free-pc-games.html
Cool - Here's the skinny from that list.

FPS

All games are already posted except for Far Cry and Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon - Those games were free for a time period but are no longer free. If you install them and did not have from the time period they were available they will not play. There is a crack online that can undo this for you but that makes the game illegal.

On September 1, 2007, Ubisoft released a single player-only version of the game as ad-supported freeware on FilePlanet. According to Ubisoft, the offer is no longer available.

RTS

All games are already posted except for Curator Defense and Dofus Arena. Dofus Arena has not be available to play for some time now, their site says coming soon. CD has a serious lag issue the last time I tried to play it. According to their site it's been fixed but I have yet to give it a spin. I will check it out soon.

RPG

All games are already posted (and fall into MMORPG not RPG genre) except for Space Cowboy, There.com and Space RPG. Space Cowboy and There.com are dead. Space RPG (the last time I played it) came with pop-ups. In other words, you would install it and a pop-up would come up, you finish playing it a pop-up would come up...you want to uninstall it....a pop-up would come up. I don't post games that do that even if they are free and legal. If anyone knows otherwise, let me know and I will check it out.

MMORPG

All games are already posted except for Furcadia, Dofus and Voyage Century Online.

Action/Adventure

All games are already posted except for Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, Rayman Raving Rabbids and The Room War. The first two are illegal at this time for the same reasons the games in the FPS section I covered above were.

The Room War is a free game from the Alien Ware competition. Others can try this one out if they like it's a really short game to show off the product and looks nice but not post worthy for me.

Racing

All games are already posted.

Space Sim

That game link is dead. There is a new project up but it's in early alpha stage...lots of bugs but for the adventurous you can try it out here - http://scp.indiegames.us/

Sims

All games are already posted except for Blockland, Ore no Ryomi 2 and Space Merchats: Conquerors.

HL2 Mods
The final section requires a purchase which is blasphemy.

ALL games posted by users from the OP down to the last have been posted except for the ones that required a purchase.

----------------------------------

BTW if you want to see some other freeware games that I don't post up check out Pixel Prospector's site - It's in the resource section of the OP of this thread. He has links to other sites and other threads on the web like this one. I can't guarantee that they are all free and legal as some people just posted anything including recently pirated games.

Blood of the Chameleon

RPG
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Fantasy

Blood of the Chameleon is a text-based adventure game that was first developed in 1999. According to developer Thomas Lipschultz, he was not able to compile the game and get it to run on standard Windows computers, and has only just now adapted the game to work.

You are tasked with killing the evil Chameleon, but first you must destroy four tears scattered around the land. It's all done in classic BBS door game style, with navigation via your number keypad, stats all over the place and turn-based fighting. It's worth visiting the Blood of the Chameleon site to read up on the history of the game - it's pretty fascinating. - IndieGames.com

Cyber

Adventure
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Science Fiction

Cyber is an investigative adventure game with graphic interaction and textual narration, produced by Andrea Pignataro Productions.

“October 27th 2063, Camden City, New Jersey, USA

Your name is Jason Currial.

You are a private eye...you have become a detective after 16 years on duty as a policeman...but now the K-X300 have replaced you...
Nothing interesting have happened anymore...your last cases have been only a complete loss of time...

Until today...”

So it starts a long “cyberpunk” investigation that will lead Jason Currial in an overwhelming spiral of events...behind what it seemed the simple disappearing of his best (and only) friend, he will discover dangerous secrets for the entire humanity...or at least what it remains of it...

Many characters will cross Jason's way...some of them will be glad to help him...but others will pretend something in exchange...

In Cyber you cannot die or remain stuck for a long time...but this doesn't mean that you are not going to have troubles!
The strong point of this game is the story which involves the player as few other adventure games can do.

Also, thanks to its textual feature, Cyber is an OpenText game, which means that everybody can modify the texts of the game, simply editing the text files in the game folder (for more informations see the “Translations” section or the “Info” section).
Finally, a little advice: if you want to enjoy the game atmosphere, don't try to play Cyber as fast as you can...try to enjoy calmly the story, the settings and most of all the music.

Cyber is a game created and produced by Andrea Pignataro.

Beautiful Escape: Dungeoneer

Adventure/Puzzle
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Horror

Beautiful Escape: Dungeoneer was developed by Calunio for RPGMaker.net's 2010 Game Gale competition. It tells the story of a disturbed youth named Verge, who joins a community of torturers called the Dungeoneers. These folks have private dungeons in their homes where they lure strangers into and torture them to near death for the viewing pleasure of an online audience. Their measure of perfection is what they call the "Beautiful Escape", a physical and mental state between life and death that they aim to put their prisoners in, rendering them insane, but just barely alive to escape the dungeon.

Live Forever
Megazell's Top Pick

Adventure
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Life

If there was ever a game that could be accused of dishing out maximum sensory overload, it would have to be Live Forever.

As you begin your game, you are hatched from an egg and told your sex and sexuality. The main objective is to prolong your life, however highscores are also recorded for other achievements such as the amount of friends you make or the amount of sounds you hear, which may require you to take a different approach. A variety of objects appear as you hover on screen, ranging from coins, botox needles, cakes, drugs and diet pills. It is up to you to figure out what to avoid and what to collect, since each object has a positive or negative effect on your lifespan.

Live Forever has a b-game style all of its own, from the strange sounds to the lovingly drawn sprites and backgrounds. As a word of warning, it contains adult themes.

Try to have some patience for the lengthy loading time. - IndieGames.com

Curator Defense

Real Time Strategy
Single Player - Yes

Theme: Tower Defense

In Curator Defense, enemies spawn at the top of the map (behind the silver entrance doors) and attempt to reach the bottom of the map (the store room). It is the player's job to prevent enemies from reaching their goal. To do this, the player can build any defense object they can afford in any pattern they see fit. Certain combinations of defense objects perform better than others, and certain locations and "mazes" are more effective than others. With experimentation, you can find which combinations add up to success.

Stardock’s Brad Wardell talks free-to-play and battling Steam

Stardock’s founder and CEO Brad Wardell – believes that the full-price retail game system is on its way out, and that free-to-play games will soon be the leaders of PC gaming revolution. Stardock have previously published grand space-faring strategy Sins of a Solar Empire and its upcoming expansion Rebellion.

Talking to Gamasutra, Wardell said: “The idea is that the PC game market is slowly moving over to a model that is more akin to what you’re seeing on mobile device, which are much less expensive. In an age where you’re used to spending only five, six bucks for a game, it’s really hard to go back to the PC and pay 60 bucks for a game, especially if it’s becoming increasingly loaded with features and content you’ll never make use of.” Read on for more details on Stardock’s plans for the future.

Microtransaction systems seem to be exceptionally vogue in the developer world today (see Steam and their TF2 experiment), and Stardock believe it’s an exceptionally important element too. Impulse: Reactor has been adapted to support microtransactions in order to bolster support for free and low-cost titles on the platform. The SDK beta is due to be released this month, and the microtransaction system is supposedly as easy to implement as adding achievements to games. In fact, Wardell suggests that the two could be linked:

“Because the developer controls the pricing from the web… what this means is that the developer inside the game can do all sorts of things to [motivate] the player,” he explained. “They can have their own little point system to give discounts on things or achieve something, they could unlock or make a certain thing free. … We want to make it so that the game developer themselves can convey this however they want to instead of having this pushed on them by an e-commerce solution.”

Wardell went on to describe ideas he had for Stardock’s own implementation of microtransactions and premium content, and it’s an idea away form the traditional view of simply buying new guns and silly hats: “I’d rather lower the price of our titles and then have these features that most people don’t care about be something they can buy extra. … I’d rather make a game for $20, $30, $40 bucks, and then make multiplayer something that people can pay for if they want that feature. That way people don’t have to subsidize something they don’t want and will never use.”

Such an idea brings microtransactions out of the realm that is so commonly trash-talked by the gaming community and makes it something that is genuinely worth thinking about. For those players who are passionate about single-player campaigns and never bother using the multiplayer components of games they purchase, this would certainly be a welcome move.

Interestingly, Impulse: Reactor does not feature it’s own independent store or client. Wardell admits that such a feature would have worked against Stardock, since Steam would refuse to be associated with any title that forced the installation of it’s own service. Developers would have ignored Impulse: Reactor as a viable tool so as to not miss out on the mass-market potential Steam offers. But such dominance in the digital field won’t last forever assures Wardell.

“I remember everyone was using MySpace… and people forget Friendster before MySpace,” Wardell said. “I don’t personally see anything in the near term that’s gonna change the status quo [regarding Steam], I’ve just been around long enough to see the mighty fall over and over again. I remember when Microsoft were considered gods and they could do no wrong. Now people are syaing Microsoft might have a store and nobody cares, whereas five years ago everybody would care.”

He explains that as the market changes, if systems like Steam don’t change to accommodate, then they become obsolete. Corporations become so set in their ways that when they realise change is required, they’ve been outplayed by someone else.

“Let’s say free-to-play takes off,” Wardell theorises. “What happens to Direct2Drive in that scenario, or any of the traditional web stores that exist? There’s no point, there’s nothing to buy. Who knows what the model is? … Once everything’s online and nothing’s at a store, all bets are off. Who knows how the market is gonna get compensated five years from now.”

Sandbox Of God

The Sandbox of god is a puzzle at heart, where every decision you make affects your outcome in the end.

For instance: I can use each godly power only once. So say I use the rain function. Then I make a comet hit the earth. The ground, being mushy, allows the comet to get stuck in the ground and become a mountain.

BUT if I use the comet function first, the comet will leave a big crater. Then by using a rain function, I can fill the hole with water, making a lake.

This is only the tip of the iceberg, folks.

Ha, I didn't even read the comments form that article. Wardell is so transparent. Also, why doesn't anyone bring up the "Gamers Bill Of Rights" he was so proud to post, yet didn't follow, in interviews? Can you tell that I think he's a weasel?

I personally have no problem with the trend toward micro-transactions. I've played both LoTRO and D&D Online for free. They're both fun and you still get quite a bit gameplay for free. I have made some purchases though. I look at those as donations for the developers.

I would look at it that way myself.

Disc Gunship

Disc Gunship is a side-scrolling shooter, inspired by Super Crate Box and Darius II. Your ship only has access to one weapon, which you might recognize as the disc gun from Super Crate Box. This means that you can slice through rows of incoming enemies with one shot and even shoot your discs diagonally. Be warned: if a disc ricochets of a wall, be ready to avoid it.

Thorns of War

MMORPG
Single Player - Yes

Theme: Fantasy

Thorns of War is a combination RPG and Sim which is played through your browser. Unlike your typical RPG the entire world began as a vast forest filled only with streams and monsters, ready for players to build every road, cottage, fortress, bridge, and shop. Unlike your typical Sim you take on the role of an individual character, building his or her wealth, skills, and reknown within a world filled with numerous other real people.

Thorns of War is not your ordinary RPG where you spend day after day grinding through levels and searching for the best items. The key to enjoying this game is simply to take on a role within the world and to live out your character's life. You learn by doing, simple as that, just like in the real world. You can choose a craft in which to specialize, or try them all! Then pay NPC hirelings to sell your goods in a shop that you build anywhere you want to build it. Or perhaps you'd prefer to learn to track, butcher, use a bow, and move through the forest unseen in order to provide meat, leather, sinew, and fur for other players living in the village that you've built together. Or maybe you want to increase your fighting skills and collect a fee to guide merchants through the dangerous countryside. It's completely up to you!

But enough talk. There's no download necessary, so get in there and get started. A massive and open world is waiting for you to make your mark!

Alter A.I.L.A. Genesis

RPG
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Science Fiction

Alter A.I.L.A. Genesis takes place in a post-apocalyptic world. You play the role of a young man known as Leon, who seeks to survive in the harsh environment he is brought into.

Exploration is done mainly via a side-scrolling view. In certain areas, an exclamation mark will sometimes appear, indicating the presence of hostiles. Press Z when this happens to initiate battle, or wait to let it pass. Sometimes battle will be unavoidable. When walking, enemy encounters won't occur.

The battle system revolves mainly around each character's Abilities, which are a set of commands specific to that character. Abilities require AP and EX to use. AP is gained every time a character takes a turn. The default is 2. EX is gained every time a character uses an Ability. The default is 1. Note that this may change depending on the situation.

Up And Coming Freeware PC Games

Monaco

Monaco is a heist game, like the movie Ocean’s 11.

Play by yourself or with up to 4 people on the same screen or online.

Each player must take advantage of their own unique character class – the Hacker can shut down the security systems while the Muscle blows a hole through the wall.

Monaco does not yet have a release date. It will be on the PC and at least one console.

If you want to follow development, check out the facebook and twitter pages. I update them constantly!

Raiderz

RaiderZ is being developed by MAEIT Entertainment, the same studio behind the popular third person shooter GunZ: The Duel. The game will utilize ‘non-targeting’ combat which means players will have to swing, and dodge attacks in real time without the helper of auto-aimers or even cross-hairs. RaiderZ promises skill based advancement; there will be no classes. Instead, players will have access to over 350 skills with which to create a custom character.

Love and War: Act I

RPG
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Fantasy

Love and War is a tale taking place on the world of Terra. Ever since the birth of the first nation-state on this world, Terra has been wracked by the scourge of war. Five nations managed to survive throughout the ages, yet it seemed as though with each passing day, humanity slipped closer and closer to self-annihilation.

One man made a difference, however. The youthful Emperor of the Zion Empire, Geraud Valtemond, was this man. A brilliant, honorable, and benevolent monarch, he managed to open the eyes of the leaders of the other nations, showing them what lay ahead if Terra persisted down this road. Through diplomacy and sheer force of will, Lord Geraud created the Commonwealth; an international governing body, comprised of democratically elected representatives and Peacekeeping Forces, which would forever make war a thing of the past.

Three centuries have elapsed, and people have forgotten the lessons of the past. Tensions are rising between nations once again, and it seems as if the Commonwealth is powerless to do anything but watch as its order crumbles. Can one man make a difference, once again?

Welcome to Love and War.

Die

Action/Platformer
Single Player - Yes

Theme: Fantasy

When the theme for the third GMC Jam competition was announced as "Live", I figured that the most logical thing to do was to make a game about dying. 72 hours later, here was the result!

In my entry, you play as the level, as opposed to the player. Your job is to do whatever you can to stop him from reaching the ending. How you may ask? Move around platforms, spinning blades and cogs and solve puzzles to trick the player into falling to his doom.
