Soldexus

Action/Platformer
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Fantasy

Soldexus is a platform adventure game patterned after the Super Metroid-inspired Castlevania games. It follows the format closely, and does a good job of it.

In this game, a guy named Ian seems to have died. Shortly after his death, he gets roped into a sort of deal with a shady individual. Ian's task is to retrieve a certain item from a large castle full of monsters. Armed with a borrowed body and a magical sword, he sets off.

Controls are straightforward and responsive. You can jump, slash, and perform special moves (after learning them). You also can press F to bring up a map and status screen. While exploring the castle, you occasionally find items that give you special moves or additional attack or defense power. You can also buy such items in a shop that you come across. (You earn money--and sometimes regain health--by defeating enemies.) There are also save rooms and warp rooms--again, the basic elements of a "Metroidvania" game.

The music in Soldexus is unassuming but of good quality. It's basically what you'd expect in a game like this. Same with the sound effects--they fit in naturally wherever they're used.

The game has many nice visual details and effects. Each area has a very different look to it and unique enemies. There is a sameness to the rooms in an area, but they differ enough that exploration never becomes tedious or disorienting. Although polished and attractive, the graphics have that slight roughness about them that's found in a lot of independent games--it's a look that I like. There is some fairly gruesome imagery in places. It's cartoonish and nothing beyond what you'd see in the aforementioned Castlevania games, but I guess it's still worth mentioning.

Finally, this game is a lot of fun. I enjoyed coming across new areas end enemies, gaining new abilities, fighting monsters, and even the frantic search for a save room in a difficult area. And, speaking of difficult, this is a very tough game. Even if you use the "easy" setting, you're in for a challenge.

If you like the Castlevania games I keep referring to, or even if you've never tried them, Soldexus is worth a look.

A very difficult platforming game. Has all hand drawn graphics, and over 50 levels of mayhem. Was made in one month for the "This Game Is Art" contest at Game Maker Games. It placed second, and has received a ton of positive feedback since.

Return Of Triad

First Person Shooter
Single Player - Yes

Theme: Science Fiction

Return of the Triad is a standalone mod/total conversion for zdoom, based upon Rise of the Triad.

Return of the Triad was created as a homage to the original game, the main reason I created it was because of rott's limited maps (45 degree walls and such), and wanted to create some new maps for it.

It took 6 years on and off to make, I started in 2004 with 5hfifty and we quickly made progress. It slumped for a few years, but with more and more features being available for zdoom, I decided to make it a full on conversion as close to the original in terms of gameplay elemets.

Rigs Of Rods

Simulation/Physics
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Other

Rigs of Rods (also known as RoR), is an Open Source truck, car, airplane and boat simulator. You can drive, fly or sail in total freedom in an open environment. What makes RoR different to most simulators is its unique soft-body physics: vehicles chassis and wheels are simulated in real-time as flexible objects, giving the simulation an extremely accurate behavior, while allowing the vehicles to be simply specified by their structural composition, as a network of interconnected nodes (forming the chassis and the wheels). Crashing into walls or terrain can permanently deform a vehicle in a realistic manner. In addition to its unique soft-body physics, RoR also features an advanced flight model based on blade element theory, allowing the accurate simulation of any airplane, base on their physical dimensions and wing airfoils. It also features an accurate buoyancy model based on elemental pressure gradients, enabling boats with complex hulls to move realistically in the swell.

Rigs of Rods is an amateur game developped by Pierre-Michel Ricordel, aka Pricorde, and is a one man hobby development, with a $0 budget, that has started more than two years ago and is still continuing. Recently a second developer, Thomas, has joined the "team". He is also the donator and caretaker of the web sites. A growing community has build up since some time and has contributed many vehicles to the game.

Theme: Espionage

The concept is great: two years before Five Days a Stranger, Trilby is an aspiring cat-burglar in Chapow City. The Art of Theft deals with the story of his daring heists and how he made his name. Although the writing’s excellent, the focus is on gameplay – it’s a stealth platformer (not a combination you see very often) which demands patience and impeccable timing to get ahead.

Metroid Prime Clone

First Person Shooter

Theme: Science Fiction

Another Bound
Another Bound is a freeware FPS which could be very difficult to pick up for non-Japanese speaking players. Use the W, A, S and D keys to control your suited protagonist. Hold the left mouse button to shoot, and press the space key to jump. Tap the F1 function key to display the location map.

Recharge stations also double as save points, easily spotted by it's green glow.

Another Bound - Neo
Excellent music, graphics, scenes and gameplay. Everything is fantastic! A pity I didn't understand anything of the story as it's all in Japanese. But you don't have to understand Japanese to play it ;)
I really enjoyed playing this first person shooter game.

In comparison with the first version of Another Bound this game has several difficulty settings (easy, normal, hard). The save files of the first version are not compatible with this version and won't work. There are much more changes, but I have no idea what the changes are. I only know that this version has at least 4 big bosses, so it's not a short game ;)

Megazell's Comment - This game is great. Since it's all in Japanese it may suck that you can not get the full story (Google) you will have plenty of action in it's place. Plays similar to Metroid Prime. Some of you may need to dl a Japanese language pack if you get an error...or just update your Windows to accept language packs. Here is the MS Office Link that may help - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...77-CD9F-4332-A6F1-52B85A6470BD&displaylang=EN - Personally, since I play PC games from all around the world I install all languages pack that are available.

Passage

Adventure
Single Player - Yes

Theme: Drama

“Passage represents life’s challenges with a maze. The screen geometry only allows you to view a narrow slice of this maze at any given moment. You can see quite a distance out in front of you (and, later in life, behind you), but you can’t see anything to the north or south. You may see a reward up ahead but not be able to see a clear path to it. In fact, after a bit of exploration, you may discover that a seemingly nearby reward is in fact unreachable.”

Megazell's Comment - This game is very short but in that short-ness lies a very well made game that challenges your perception of what is a game. The reward mechanic in the game will have you thinking about your next move like a puzzle game but never loses the adventure/platform/action feel of the game.

The disease of the great panda left the world in utter devastation. Human kind only survived modified as cyborgs gathered in small groups scattered across the torched globe. During the first gloomy years after the catastrophe, survivors shied away from eachother. Language was lost. When communities started to form the need for languages was provided by a 1000 year old hissing google translate server with a God complex, called Bob.

However, the reconstruction of human society did not go as planned. Along with civilization came all that is associated with it: famine, disease, war. Looking for answers, mankind blamed it all on the lack of social interaction. Becoming cyborgs meant loosing the ability to propagate - humans were made in small workshops and abandoned factories, genetic material grown in tubes combined with what ever scrap metal that was obtainable.
A prophecy foretells of a firstborn who will come and re instigate the natural way of making humans. Through the mists of time the means of propagation is taught by a special edition "Dirty Dancing" DVD-box, and it is believed that to gain the spark of life-creation one would have to revive an old dancing hall called "the Groove". But how this would be done is a knowledge long lost.

According to the prophecy the firstborn will go out in the wasteland to find the last living "real" human beings, thought to still be alive, bring them back and let them light the fires of the dancehall.

You are the firstborn.

A simple undersea action game.

Dive deep into the frigid abyss. Communicate with friendly creatures; avoid dangerous ones. What mystery lurks at the bottom?

This was created for the gamma 256 competition at kokoromi. In order to comply with the competition's rules, it's very short - about five minutes - and its native resolution is 36x64. It will scale to a more visible size for you, of course.

Supports Xbox 360 wired controllers. Be sure to have sound on.

Z on the keyboard or A on the Xbox 360 pad will activate a sonar pulse. Use this to interact with both friendly and unfriendly creatures. Alt+Enter for full screen mode.

Guardian Of Paradise

RPG
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Fantasy

Guardian of Paradise is a fun little Zelda-ish game by Buster, who you may know as having created Akuji the Demon. GoP casts you as Tela, a boy whose sister has fallen ill. Nobody knows what's wrong with her, so there seems to be no cure, but legends tell of healing waters in Paradise, so Tela sets out to find the fabled land and save his sister. He encounters elemental spirits along the way, which provide magic, and the basis for the game's puzzle system.

To the best of my knowledge, and I've played through three areas so far, Tela never gets any magic expansions. His MP gauge is carefully regulated, and can be replenished by picking up the magic coins that scatter when enemies are destroyed. The coins are plentiful so there's no real need to worry about magic except in certain situations, but that's usually part of a puzzle. You can only have one elemental spirit summoned at any given time; destroy an enemy of an alternate element and pick up its different-colored magic coins to summon a different elemental. The system is quite simple at heart, and is easy to get used to, but it allows for some very interesting puzzles. The game is quite fun, and it's freeware to boot! Two thumbs up.

Megazell's Comment - The ONLY drawback to this game is that it's in a small screen. Also the link that I am putting up is already translated. You can DL the one from the author but then you have to dl the English patch to get up and running properly.

Lacewing

Shooter/Arena
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - Yes
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Science Fiction

An arcade-style game for 1 or 2 players (splitscreen, cooperative or duel). It's sort of a cross between Spacewar and Centipede, if that makes any sense.

You fight your way through many levels full of strange creatures and machines, upgrading your chosen craft as you go along. The graphics and sounds are decidedly retro-arcade-style. It's hard, but you get better with practice.

It's covered by the GPL, so source is available. It was written for DOS/Win95 using DJGPP and no libraries other than Allegro. Graphics designed using the GIMP; sounds produced with Psycle.

If you like Lacewing, you might also like Overgod, which is written with more or less the same engine but has much better graphics. Go to the Depot section in my profile to find it.

Megazell's Comment - May not work with Vista and higher. I hope not because this game is serious fun in co-op mode.

Modern War 3

Real Time Strategy
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Military

Defend your base - a great shoot'em up

Hundreds, no, THOUSANDS of soldiers are attacking your base. Soldiers here, soldiers there, soldiers everywhere! Foot-soldiers, full-tracks, cavalrymen, planes, parachutists, etc. It never stops! Just shoot them down, shoot them ALL down!!! It's war! Don't let them take your base. Fight till your last man!
The first time I played this game I thought that I was fighting against the Zulu's. The more enemies you kill, the more new ones will appear. But don't worry, if you can stand long enough, they will give up and you will win the big battle.

Not only you can shoot them (with the left mouse), but you can buy items too. Right mouse click will open a nice menu, and you can choose what you want to buy. You have a choice of soldiers, a tank, a plane or even a meteor storm.
In this game you have to try to get a high score. The more you kill, the more points you get. But if you buy an item, you will lose some points. It is your choice.

Megazell's Comment - In the screenshot section below is an image of what button you must select to change the game's language to English. Options is the third option in the original screen when the game first starts. Enjoy it's a very fun game. :)

Bos Wars

Real Time Strategy
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - Yes

Theme: Science Fiction

Bos Wars is a futuristic real time strategy game (RTS). In a RTS game, the player has to combat his enemies while developing his war economy. Everything runs in real-time, as opposed to turn-based games where the player always has to wait for his turn. The trick is to balance the effort put into building his economy and building an army to defend and attack the enemies.

Bos Wars has a dynamic rate based economy. Energy is produced by power plants and magma gets pumped from hot spots. Buildings and mobile units are also built at a continuous rate. Control of larger parts of the map creates the potential to increase your economy throughput. Holding key points like roads and passages allow for different strategies.

It is possible to play against human opponents over LAN, internet, or against the computer. Bos Wars successfully runs under Linux, MS Windows, BSD, and Mac OS X.
Bos Wars aims to create a completely original and fun open source RTS game.

Megazell's Comment - Solid RTS that will remind you of CnC but don't sleep on the learning AI. The game also has map packs for you to DL and several mods/map sites.

OS: Windows XP or higher, Mac and Linux version also availabel
CPU: 900 Mhz

Thread Update!

We are now @ 600 games. (More if you consider the Spotlights that leads towards more games)

With so many more games coming my way and my time for posting diminishing I am looking for ways to make this faster and faster. I got my templates working better. I think the biggest slow down is for the games that have NO system requirements info...I then I have boot up 'Sandra' and have that program test the games needs.

Overall this thread is bringing me much joy :) As I am now experimenting with genres that I never touched but thanks to the feedback from members of this forum and others...I am dipping my toes into them and finding them quite refreshing.

Keep the comments and recommendation coming!

Game on!

Chaotic Vortex

Shooter/Top Down
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Science Fiction

Chaotic Vortex is a top down action game where you play an energy being in it’s quest for the Particles of Life, which are essential for it’s survival. The particles are also coveted by the humans, who will not hesitate to destroy you to keep them for themselves. You must venture into human infested worlds, turn your natural powers into weapons to defend yourself and retrieve the particles before they get to you.

Features include:

Refreshing enemy-avoidance oriented gameplay. Instead of the more common enemy blasting action of your average shooter, in Chaotic Vortex you can’t fire a single bullet. You’ll have to keep a cool head while steering away from dozens of enemies coming at you!

Addictive, easy to learn but hard to master retro playability. Just launch it and start having fun – who wants to read game manuals or study game mechanics after a hard days’ work?

4 different weapons of mass destruction at your disposal. Use your being’s natural powers as mighty weapons, such as The Vortex (ensnare enemies in a powerful whirlwind), Repelling Shield (push enemies away from you), Light of Chaos (a biforked beam that destroys anything it touches) and the always awesome Bullet Time (which gives you valuable reaction time in the heat of the batlle)

Mouse oriented gameplay. Optimized for mouse-only playability, does not require a gamepad

Low system requirements. No need for latest 3D hardware

Widelands

Widelands is an open source (GPLed) real-time strategy game. It is built upon the SDL and other open source libraries and is (and will always be) under heavy development. If you knew Settlers I & II™ (© Bluebyte), then you already have a rough idea what Widelands is all about because widelands is heavily inspired by those two games.

Megazell's Comment - I highly recommend you check out their official website. The primary link for the downloading leads you to this great games website. The forum and side links give you a lot of maps and campaigns to get your hands on.

Clonk

The original Clonk. Two players lead their Clonks into 30 predefined battles. Featuring castles, catapults, flintstones, rain, lightning and a monster.

Clonk 2 Debakel (German Only)

Clonk 2 wrapped the action gameplay of Clonk 1 with a hexmap strategy game for 2-4 players.

Clonk A.P.E

The Advanced Players Edition was released after Clonk 2 as an extended version of the original game. It was the first version to contain a player roster, scenario options, snow, loam, and wipf and zap creatures.

Clonk 3 Radikal

Clonk 3 surpassed its predecessors in terms of complexity and gameplay by a wide margin. Clonks could be controlled individually or in groups. They could swim, dive, dig in 7 directions and build bridges in 5 directions. Vertical scrolling enabled bigger levels that contained layers of rock, granite, gold, oil, water and acid. Natural disasters like earthquakes, volcanos and comets threatened the Clonks. Castles, lifts, windmills, pumps, watchtowers and oil-powered generators could be built with construction kits and interconnected with power lines and pipes. Available vehicles and heavy weapons included tippers, sailing boats, hot-air balloons, catapults and crossbows. Portable weapons and building materials included flintstones, incendiary bombs, arrows, concrete and steel bars. Sharks, wipfs, zaps and monsters inhabited the environment, which had a customizable climate including seasons, rain, snow, storms and lightning. Gameplay modes included learning missions, single-player/cooperative and melee/tournament. The player roster with player portraits, lots of statistics and the players' Clonk crew with their ranks and abilities was updated after every gaming session.

Clonk 4 Radikal

Clonk 4 was the first game in the Clonk series that took advantage of Windows 9x with DirectX and was offering high resolution graphics up to 1024x768, free scrolling in levels of unlimited size, up to four splitscreens and completely texturized landscape graphics. The game engine was extended to support freely movable objects with rotation, gravity and recoil, detailed and individual abilities of Clonks and other creatures. Many new buildings, vehicles and objects enriched the gameplay. A modular, extendable system allowed the creation of custom scenarios and objects.

Note: all scenarios and objects available on the Internet are compatible with Clonk Endeavour only and won't work with Clonk 4. Clonk 4 doesn't allow the creation of custom scenarios anymore.

Clonk Planet

Clonk Planet was the sequel to Clonk 4. Its new menu system for the first time provided access to all game elements through a single general view. Player files, scenarios, and object definitions could be conveniently organized by drag 'n' drop.

The main new feature of Clonk Planet was its networking capability. Any number of players on any number of computers could join in the same clonk realtime world. With a good connection, even internet games were possible. Clonk Planet also featured mouse control with completely redesigned game menus suitable for beginners and large strategic or economic scenarios.

Notice that use of the freeware code does not entitle to any support, upgrades, or access to our additional online offers.

Clonk Endeavour

Clonk Endeavour is the sequel to Clonk Planet and predecessor to the newer Clonk Rage in the series of 2D Clonk games.
Clonk Endeavour was the first Clonk game to use a 32 bit graphics system based on Direct3D and OpenGL for enhanced quality and lots of new visual effects.
The game was translated to nine different languages: German, English, French, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Finnish, Estonian, Hungarian. All language packs are included in the download.

OpenClonk

OpenClonk is a free multiplayer action game where you control clonks, small but witty and nimble humanoid beings. The game is mainly about mining, settling and fast-paced melees. OpenClonk is also not just a game but also a versatile 2D game engine that offers countless possibilities to make your own mods. OpenClonk is a project dedicated to the further development of the Clonk game series. Our goal is to improve and make the real strengths of Clonk more fun to play: Bustling mining, production lines and economy, fast and fiddly melees. Another focus lies on the further enchancement of the game engine and the extensibility/modability of the game content with C4Script which has always been one of the most important features of Clonk.

Might I recommend the online version of the truly glorious boardgame, Settlers of Catan? The basic (and best) version of the game is free, though if you pay, you can play its expansions.

I haven't actually played online, as the account I registered was banned due to its name shortly after it was created.

LOL!

Well, back when my kid was playing 'Fusion Fall' they had a great naming system. Predefined words were available for you to select to make up a name...you can then submit a name for your avatar to be changed later after they reviewed it. A lot of these games/sites that require discreet names should adopt that method.
