Splinter Source

Action/Platformer
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Espionage

Splinter Source was the result of a 6 day effort; an entry into Klik Academy's 2005 Kacade contest. It came in 2nd place

Quick Instructions:
Use SHIFT to select options on the main menu.

Use the LEFT and RIGHT arrow keys to move.

Use the CTRL key to draw your gun. Use the CTRL key in conjunction with the LEFT or RIGHT arrow key to punch.

Use the SHIFT key to jump. Pressing the SHIFT key when your gun is drawn will fire the gun (you must have bullets)

Holding the UP key while over a green horizontal bar will make you hang from it. To let go of the bar, press the DOWN key or SHIFT key.

Holding the UP key when your in a darkened area allows you to hide yourself; enemies who come into contact with you while your are hiding will not be alerted.

There are many more rules the game follows. Please refer to the in-game help for further instructions.

Megazell's Comment - Small game screen is about the only gripe I have with this game. Oddly enough I found this game tougher then the original (that was so easy for me it was sad). There is a lot going on in this little game then meets your eye at first glance. Very well made!

Quake Live

Gaming Event

Tonight!

8:30 PM EST to 10:30 PM EST

Team Death Match!

Xfire Meetup for those interested in voice chat though not needed!

Great match last night.

Thanks to all that showed up :)

I think I am going to sit out of FPS for a bit...I got CREAMED :( I think I lost my 'love' for FPS.

Quake Live is still a great game and I highly recommend it.

I've been playing 'Soldat' with some friends and I think that's messed up my button coordination with FPS in general.

Soldat Game Night

10:30 PM EST to 11:30 PM EST

Xfire Meet Up For Voice Chat - Not needed but would greatly help!

Tank Wars 3D

Shooter/Arena
Single Player - No
Multiplayer - Yes

Theme: Military

Tank Wars 3D is a 3D action/strategy tank battle game.
You must capture the enemy flag, while defending your own. You have 4
modes: Brick mode, Mine mode, Missle mode, and Grenade mode.

While in Brick mode, use the fire button to build a brick where the terrain
is lit in green. Bricks are helpful for making a wall around your flag.

While in Mine mode, use the fire button to build a mine where the terrain
is lit in green. Mines can only be destroyed by grenades, or by stepping
on them(But then you also die). Mines can be used to defend your flag.

While in Missle mode, use the fire button to fire a missle. The missle
will fire in the direction you are facing. The green targeter can also
aid you in aiming. If a missle hits a Strong brick than the brick will
become a weak brick, and you will notice that it is all cracked up. Hit
a weak brick and it will be destroyed. Also, missles will destroy a Tree,
but they will leave the stump. Note that you cannot drive over stumps.
Missles are good for destroying bricks, turning trees into stumps, and
killing your opponent.

While in Grenade mode, use the fire button to throw a gernade to the
Green Targeter. Once you throw a grenade RUN! Grenades are 9 times more
powerful than missles, and can destroy everything(except flags and gates).

Megazell's Comment - This is a very simple yet nice little gem of a game. Has no A.I. when I last played it but it's great for one on one battles with a friend.

Created by accident, all who find you will destroy you.
Survive, grow, and learn.
Only then can you escape.

Endgame: Singularity is a simulation of a true AI. Go from computer to computer, pursued by the entire world. Keep hidden, and you might have a chance.

Megazell's Comment - This game has you take on the life of an AI virus. You must learn and distribute yourself to servers across the globe...At first you will be undetected then as you are noticed you will be hunted down and destroyed...try to survive as long as you can before you transcend your current existence and become something more. Won't be for everyone but those that are into simulations and turn-based strategies would enjoy it a lot.

Yet another game about Zombies, Fesh' is another new take on that classic set up. You're lost in a pixelated mansion, viewing the action from a top down perspective, battling against increasing numbers of the shambling undead, where one hit can result in your untimely death.

It's nothing earth-shattering, but the atmosphere is effectively built with the sombre music interspersed with snippets of news reports detailing the Zombie outbreak. - IndieGames.com

Hey,

I played that game while back. I will post that one up soon. Currently, I have 9 more back logged and then I will post up the rest of the suggestions I got from you guys/gals.

Hey, Mega

Congrats on the milestone of 600+ games! Only 8,400 to go to meet that original goal I think you said. Haha. You seem very passionate about this thread and free gaming so I applaud thee. :applause::applause:

In your internet wanderings have your search bots found anything Predator related (you know, the Arnold flick with a Danny Glover sequel)? I ran into a alpha release of a Crysis mod but realistically nothing like that will ever get released simply because the art assets required for an engine like Crysis...good luck. It seems like the license holders are going to run the franchise into the ground so I figured there is probably some fan-based game made out of frustration that's out there.

List of all retail games based on:
Predator
Aliens

Anyways keep up the good work. That Splatterhouse game looks hilarious.

There were a few Aliens and Predator games that I played that were awesome but they no longer work with Windows XP. But back in the Windows 98 days...they were killer.

I use to be down with retail and console games back in the day but over the years the games that are released are no longer innovated but re-hashed games of yesteryear. My volunteer work reignited my love for indie games. So I like to share those games that I find others may enjoy also. Also, I like to showcase that when you already own a Mac, Linux or Windows based computer that you DO have choices out there in terms of games and entertainment.

Right now I have some free time and I am trying to complete all of the missions in 'Attack Of The Paper Zombies.' Citadel is kicking my ass.

Catan - The Board Game

The players in the game represent settlers establishing colonies on the island of Catan. Players build settlements, cities, and roads to connect them as they settle the island. The game board representing the island is composed of hexagonal tiles (hexes) of different land types which are laid out randomly at the beginning of each game; new editions of the game also depict a fixed layout in their manual, which has been proven to be fairly even-handed by computer simulations, and recommend this to be used by beginners.

“drone” is basically a top-down shooter combined with a tower defense combined with a RTS with a bit of driving sim and rpg in there. You kill enemies to collect money which you may then spend on weapons, ammo, armor, buildings, or vehicles. The fun is in how its balanced. It is possible to finish the entire game without using any weapons – just buildings. Likewise, you can finish the entire game with just weapons and no buildings at all.

The amount of free MMORPGs, MMORTS, MMOFPS and browser based games has jumped to ridiculous number this month alone.

Many of them are in alpha and beta stages but a great deal of them are up and running.

Waiting for some reviews before I start posting...In the mean time...

What do you guys and gals want to see?

MMORPG?

MMORTS?

MMOFPS?
can always use more actiony mmorpgs with active combat systems/mechanics. gonna be hard to beat ddo though.
I quite agree. The storyline and depth of DDO is a high standard for many of these other MMOs to beat.

ArchLord would be my 2nd best since it's PVP format is quite engaging.

Theme: Fantasy

Verge is a game that is based off of an idea from H. P. Lovecraft's Commonplace Book for a competition over at The Independent Gaming Source. The idea chosen for this game was Life and Death.

"27 Life and Death.
Death—its desolation and horror—bleak spaces—sea-bottom—dead cities.
But Life—the greater horror!
Vast unheard-of reptiles and leviathans—hideous beasts of prehistoric jungle—rank slimy vegetation—evil instincts of primal man—Life is more horrible than death."

The game is puzzle platformer that revolves around a mechanic involving life and death. When the character dies, it's not the end of his journey. The player will find themselves in situations where death is in the answer to solving the puzzle. There are 9 levels in this small "Compo Edition" of the game.

Hey I got a game for you. Meteor (1 & 2). It's an awesome top down shooter. It's been awhile since I played, so I don't remember the story. Both feature full mod support. Like, the most extensive you've seen in awhile. Each have a level editor (1 has a simple tile-based system, while 2's is layer-based and more flexible, but more complicated), and simple sprite editor (Well, its more for putting your stuff in game; you need to make the actual sprites in paint or something)

Anyway, they are easy to start out, but can get very advanced if you want to. And theres a good amount of mods for 'em too.

Theme: Social Commentary

Sometimes people just aren’t willing to take the necessary steps to ensure their good cause is appreciated by the masses. That’s something the star of free indie pixel action game, Fear Is Vigilance, doesn’t misunderstand. When her attempts to give out free personal alarms to students, to protect them when walking through the park at night, she finds people just aren’t interested. So she strikes upon a brilliant scheme: Beat people up in the park at night!

It’s so obvious, and yet for whatever inexplicable reason so few tend to think along these lines. Amnesty should hold a lot more people captive. So it is that you alternate between two game modes. Trying to hand out safety alarms to students within a 40 second time limit, and then trying to duff up a minimum number of people in the park before your own lights get knocked out. The more you beat up, the more likely students are to take your alarms the next day. See? Perfect logic! - RPS.com

I tried out a few games:
Robocop 2D: the game has great menus and a joypad configuration thingy. It features some clips from the flick (in horrible resolution). But I can't really recommend it because the gameplay is god awful slow and Robocop is slightly unresponsive.
Living Hell: great graphics but also slow gameplay. I beat the horse on the first level and the game crashed (win7).
Castlevania: Bloodletting: seems to work alright but I encountered some strange glitches with the whip and walking up stairs that really turned me off.

FreeCol is a turn-based strategy game based on the old game Colonization, and similar to Civilization. The objective of the game is to create an independent nation.

You start with only a few colonists defying the stormy seas in their search for new land. Will you guide them on the Colonization of a New World?

Megazell's Comment - It's been a long time but this was my game of choice as opposed to Civilizations. I can't say if one is better than the other...it's just that this one presentation and GUI appealed to me. I highly recommend those that are into TBS games to try this one out.

Robocop is based on the NES and SNES games and I can tell you from playing the original...he moves SPOT ON like he suppose to. I did manage to end those games.

I ended Living Hell - Windows XP. This is another game based on Splatterhouse from the TurboGraphic 16 game system and that character moves SPOT ON like the original. That's part of what made those games hard as hell.

Castlevania: Bloodletting - Yes - He did not get a chance to fully code the whip to be used like the hidden character in 'Symphony Of The Night' - Where you hold the whip button and then move your pad or arrows around to have the whip whirl and attack on it's own while you can not move. The only glitch I got with the stairs is that when you jump in the middle of the stairs and try to climb up it resets you back to the bottom. The character does have some nice jump features that help you bypass a lot of the traps and stages quickly and even lead to a hidden room that is a spoof of 'Ghouls and Ghost.' The storyline is tight though!

Windows 7 seems to crash with a lot of games - Which is part of the reason why I never got the OS - Even though I can get a new copy for $32.50. At the time when I was considering the upgrade, I was still playing a lot of MODs for Freedom Force and Freedom Force II. Both games did not seem to work with Windows 7. The steam version do work with Win7 but I had the retail version and did not feel like re-buying them on STEAM just to play them. Justice League vs X-Men: Dark Times is by far one of the best mods I ever played for any game...it's made with such polish it looks like a retail game.

Sorry to hear the games are not working well with your OS.

Dungeon Crawl

Linley's Dungeon Crawl (or "Crawl") is a well-known roguelike that features expansive race/class selection and a large religious pantheon. The goal of Crawl is to recover the "Orb of Zot" hidden deep within the dungeon complex.

Megazell's Comment - Like all roguelike games - You can dl tiles and mods to make the games graphics more appealing. These games do not appeal to everyone for the lack of graphics but the games challenge is why most give these games a go.

C-evo is a freeware empire building game for Windows.
With a time scope of several thousand years, it covers aspects of exploration and expansion, industry and agriculture, warfare and diplomacy, science and administration. C-evo follows the spirit of popular turn-based strategy games from the mid 90s, but with more emphasis on powerful AI and careful design of the rules, resulting in a true challenge.

The game is based on Microprose's famous Sid Meier's Civilization and has many basic ideas in common with it. Actually, this project has arised from the wish to correct annoying design mistakes and AI weaknesses of Civ II. The priorities of the C-evo project are considerably different from big commercial games. While those are focused on easy entertainment and mainly compete for the most realistic and exciting up-to-date multimedia, this one aims at ageless challenge.

Megazell's Comment - One the same page of the primary download link are mods and maps for you to enjoy. I highly recommend you check them out as they had a lot of different dimensions to this wonderful game. BTW this game is BRUTALLY hard once you get pass the beginning learning curve.

In Nikujin you play a ninja, who's goal is to progress through a ninja fortress of increasing difficulty, utilising your ninja skills to ensure your survival.

Megazell's Comment - This game is made by one of the most famous freeware game makes of Japan - Ikki. All of this games are top notch. The only drawback is they are all in Japanese. This game uses the arrows to move, shift to jump and ctrl to attack. But I am going to quote another person's review to better describe this game's play mechanic...

'Without Nikujin, nobody in the world would probably know who the hell is 'Ikki'.

Well Nikujin exists and we all know that Ikki is a little mysterious, but very talented Japanese game developer.

Nikujin is a bit of an oddity. It was created by a person known as 'Ikiki'. And that's everything I know about the creator, except that he created one of my favourite 2D-platformers. (Xander)

All you have to use in this game are arrows, jump button and attack button. Easy? No! It takes a while to master all the possible moves and don't take me wrong - it's not like some fighting game where you use five random buttons and perform a combo. No, evertything makes perfect sense in Nikujin and that is what makes the game unique. Every move you perform is so fluid and fun, that if you watch some master playing Nikujin, you will find it's pretty spectacular just to watch the game.

:O I love Ikki games, Nikujin is like Nintendo hard. I could never get past the 3rd or 4th level but it's accompanied me on many a trip with a laptop.

Ditto!

A few years ago I had a language translator program for Windows 98 that use to convert languages for many of these games...not always 100%...but it was good enough to give you some of the story and such. I am going to be posting up Ikki's games and looking for a translator program for some of them.

This is a straight up top down shooter from Japan. The game's graphics and sound are top notch. The ship moves a little slow for my taste but the game is challenging and has some great bosses to take down.

Megazell's Comment - You have 2 modes to play this game in 'Standard Mode' (multiple lives) and 'Challenge Mode' (1 life - non stop enemies). No read me but there is a config program to help you define your keys. Z is shoot, X is bomb, Arrows are movement.

Fishman 2 - The Pirate Treasure

Action/Platformer
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Fantasy

FishMan 2 - The Pirate Treasure is a four level platformer that plays a lot like Nintendo's classic Mario series. Hold the left or right arrow key to run in one direction and press the Z, space or up arrow key to jump. A few platforms can only be reached if some forward momentum is gained before executing a leap.

It's advisable to set your display to a lower resolution before starting the game, because there are no configurable options for full screen or a larger display window. A pretty good effort, although there are one or two minor glitches to watch out for.

Megazell's Comment - I kept the original comment about this game as is but you don't need to do all of that if you do want to. The game has a small screen but it's not TOO small. Simple and fun platformer.
