A Day In The Life Of Bob

Simulation/Life
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Other

A Day in the Life of Bob was my first major undertaking. It was the first game I tried to make in Game Maker, but it took several tries before I actually created a working engine. The game is a life simulator heavily inspired by the Flash game, StickRPG, but with its own unique twist. Plenty of surprises and numerous placed to explore will ensure a fun playing experience. This is, by far, my most popular game.

Broken Knuckles is a 2D side-scrolling beat'em up for one or two players. You take on the role of two brothers who have to save their mother from a group of thugs known as SID. The brothers soon discover that their mother was kidnapped because she possesses a special jewel with a hidden power. SID wants the jewel for their own evil desires and it is up to you to track them down and stop them!

Megazell's Comment - This game was made for a competition and took 2nd place. It's graphics are crude but the game is a lot of fun. It's co-op too and as always you can use Joy2Key to enjoy it gamepads with a friend or family. Pays homage to a lot of side scroller beat'em ups like 'Streets of Rage', 'Vigilante' and 'Double Dragon.'

Attack of the 50ft Robot! is an action/adventure game set in a 1950s B-movie. Unleash your inner robot and destroy everything that stands in your way.

It was developed by students at DigiPen Institute of Technology over a period of fifteen months. Attack of the 50ft Robot! uses NVIDIA's PhysX.

Megazell's Comment - As stated above this game uses PhysX from NVIDIA. Make sure your card has this feature.
http://www.nvidia.com/object/physx_new.html

Otherwise this game will crash on startup. I've already got a few PM's about this and those that had this issues had really old cards. Otherwise this game is a hell of a lot of fun.

An abstract flying game. Very economical in its design. The inherent frustration is balanced by instantaneous reloading after death.

Megazell's Comment - This developer makes a huge amount of games that fall into the abstract game genre. Check out the primary link to see his other work...some may or may not be posted here. This game is a lot of fun but is a serious challenge for those that need to get just one more level in ;)

Theme: Science Fiction

UFO2000 is free and opensource turn based tactical squad simulation multiplayer game. It is heavily inspired by the famous X-COM: UFO Defense game. While UFO2000 engine was specifically designed to be compatible with the graphics resources and maps from X-COM, you don't need any proprietary data files to play as a new fan-made set of graphics exists and is included in UFO2000 distribution by default (see screenshot), so the game is ready to run out of the box. But if you want an exact X-COM look and feel, you have an option of installing original X-COM and TFTD data files and use them for extending UFO2000 with additional maps, weapon sets and units.

The Expelations of The Little Green Pod Man

Action/Platformer
Single Player - Yes

Theme: Science Fiction

It’s kinda difficult to explain this one. The Expelations of The Little Green Pod Man is essentially a platformer with a neat gimmick – instead of jumping, you can transform yourself into a Venus Flytrap that spits you out onto new ledges. You can also make the plant grow towards bees to reposition it, and swallow the bees to make it shoot you further. On top of that there are a few subtleties to how it all works that you pick up as you go along.

To be honest, it’s easier to just play it and see how it works for yourself than it is to explain. Thankfully, it’s a fun little game to play, though a little frustrating at times. It helps that the song accompanying it suits the game perfectly.

Also, for no apparent reason it has a picture of a squirrel in the loading screen. Who among us doesn’t appreciate that?

Let's go back in time. Let's go back to... end of January 2007 or beginning of Februari 2007. It might not be much back into time, but going just that little bit back will take us back to the '80s, back to the good old days of the NES and RPGs like Dragon Quest, Destiny of an Emperor and the likes. That's because then, Dragon Warrior Reborn 1 was released.

Dragon Warrior Reborn starts with an introduction to the story. 500 years ago, there was a great evil being, but your great-great-great grandfather beat it using a ball of light. The ball of light's disappeared and the evil has now risen again. It's up to you, as descendant of the great hero, to fight and defeat this evil once more.

Bernard and Hank - Springtime Again

Shooter/Platformer
Single Player - Yes

Theme: Fantasy

Bernard & Hank

Bernard & Hank is about the farmer Bernard Buffalo and his retired friend Hank Hoedown. The evil businessman NationalLiberal wants his farmland, to build a factory farm on it. He sends out his minions to steal the deeds to the farm. Bernard and Hank will have to get this back, and they have to get rid of all the liberalminions. They will have to go through 40 normal platform levels, 3 driving levels and meet 15 different enemies to do so. The game is a bone-headed platformer with moving platforms, collecting coins, jumping on fat people and getting shot by cowliberals. The game also contains some minigames, to be unlocked by finishing levels. I used a 52 colour palette for the gfx, because I felt like doing something different.

Bernard & Hank: Springtime Again

Hank Hoedown makes some pocket money by selling eggs, and plans to win the yearly egg contestwith a huge egg. NationalLiberal, on the prowl for revenge, steals the big egg and sends out his minions to paint and hide the rest of the eggs. Hank, along with his old pal Bernard Buffalo, has to go through 27 levels, meet around 20 different enemies and search for hidden bonus levels to defeat NationalLiberal once again and get his egg back. Just like the first Bernard & Hank this is a straightforward platform game. The graphics are as simple as in the first game, but the gameplay, sound effects and music tracks are more advanced. Also included is the minigame Liberball (which was an unlockable in thefirst game) and a jukebox to listen to all musictracks.

Post Update

This has to be one of the most enjoyable single player side-scroller shooters I have had the pleasure of playing in some time. Currently, I am on the final level on INSANE mode...the game is just an epic win for those that were involved in it's creation. If you have not tried it yet do so. It's just awesome.

Also here is a sneak peak @ TAGAP 2 - Which according to the game makers forums is about to be released soon.

Swarm

Real Time Strategy
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Science Fiction

Swarm is a real time strategy game with a twist. Instead of gathering resources, building or commanding teams of units, you control a swarm of ravenous insects that constantly emerges from your hive. The challenge is to guide your swarm through setting waypoints. The objective is to collect enough upgrades to raid and destroy the enemy hive.

Megazell's Comment - This developer really knows how to make a RTS game. Though devoid of MP this game's SP is a serious challenge. Their first game that I played Attack Of The Paper Zombies is a keeper due to the challenge and excellent random mode (skirmish). This game is right up their also. It's game play mechanic may frustrate some but for RTS fans that love difficult games this is gold.

Les Miserables: the game of the book is the first time that the story of Les Miserables has been adapted into a game. Notice the careful wording. It's the first time the story has been adapted, not the first time the characters have appeared in a game.

Purists of a nervous disposition may wish to stop reading now.

Les Miserables is popular in Japan, and computer based fighting games are also popular in Japan, so it was inevitable that one day they would meet. So "Arm Joe" was born: a fighting game that uses characters and costumes based on the musical. Are you ready for this?

A man called Takase made the game in the late 1990s. It features all the main characters from Les Miserables, plus a Robot replica of Valjean, a personification of divine judgment, and an animated stuffed rabbit who drives a Mini-car.

Groovy Greg set out to build robots that could love. Instead, he got the nanobots.

Nearly useless by themselves, the bots were designed to solve problems as a team. However, not even the 'daily fun hour' is enough to keep them from exchanging blows. It's enough to make even the most laid-back hippie want to tear out his dreadlocks.

Now, with a failing grade looming, Groovy Greg has almost given up on his experiment. Little does he know that his beloved bots are about to meet a challenge bigger than what they'd been programmed for.

Nanobots is a classic-style point and click adventure game that lets you take control of Hotbot, Brainbot, Tallbot, Audbot, Strongbot, and Chembot as they race to save themselves from an untimely and crushing end. Can they make use of their surroundings, fashion an escape plan, and avoid coming face-to-fist with the evil Professor Killfun? Only if they give peace a chance.

Zombie Movie is an intense isometric shooter that takes place during the filming of a famous (and obviously), a-lot-of-dead-zombies type movie. Your goal is to make as much points as possible by killing different zombie types during about 6 minutes.

First of all, the game starts with a movie director telling instructions to the main character, the hero (you). Throughout this movie, your goal is to kill as much zombies as you can. To do so, you will be procured weapons as you progress (kill zombies) through the 6 minutes 30 seconds maximum length movie. In other words, you have 00:06:30 to kills as much zombies as you can.

Your overall score as well as other statistics will determine if the movie was appreciated or not. In order to make as much points as you can, you got to stay as near as you can to the helicopter's shadow (where the director is filming from). By doing so, the camera will record a better image of your actions, therefore, you may earn up to ten times the points you could of earned by killing a zombie. You can also earn bonus points from streaks. Streaks are obtained when you kill more than one zombie in a row (sniper may be useful for that type of combo).

That's all, I will let you discover the rest. Careful, this game is hard and requires strategy.

Here are some information you might be interested in:

150 kills = Sniper Rifle
550 Kills = Rocket Launcher
1250 kills = surprise weapon (not a big surprise)

The game features online high score. Hopefully, we will meet you there :).

The original LSL was made by a team of five in 48 hours at USC for the first annual Global Game Jam. The newest version, v1.1, was made in a week.

LSL is a 2-D arena shooter featuring a robot that falls in love with several lovely female robots each with her own unique abilities and atmosphere:

The longer our heroes stay together, the more their relationship will evolve, making them stronger; but this increases the difficulty of the game, too. When they "break up," the enemies are cleared, but so is the score multiplier. Throughout the game, the robot recalls memories of a love before...

Try to get as high a score as you can without dying, and you might make it on the online high score chart.

Akrasia

Action/Platformer
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Fantasy

Akrasia is a single-player game that challenges game conventions and is intended to make the player think and reflect. It is based on the abstract concept of addiction, which is expressed metaphorically throughout the game.

Spoiler Warning! The game is set in a maze that represents the mind. The maze has two states - a normal and a psychedelic state. To enter the game, the player has to collect a pill-shaped object and thus enters the game as "addict". From "chasing the dragon" and the experience of dependency to working your way through "cold turkey stage" where willpower is mapped onto navigation skills, this game models the essential dimensions of the addiction gestalt as identified by its creators.

Depending on player behavior and choice, the game can have various outcomes that reflect this behavior. Someone who tries to shake the habit as quickly as possible will find herself in a different situation at the end of the game than someone who indulged in chasing the high. Unlike many other games where the player is forced to learn a specific behavior in order to win the game, this game gives the player a lot of freedom in regard to the realization of the game as text. The interpretation of the game is different depending on how the game is played, thus Akrasia is a prime example of a dynamic, player-dependent meaning generation.

The game is meant to be played several times until all the connections between its various elements - the high-score, the life bar with its symbols, the two creatures that inhabit the maze in its two states, etc. - are decoded and its underlying meaning reveals itself. But although every single element in the game supports one specific reading, the beauty of Akrasia is its interpretative richness. All the elements in the game make sense in regard to one reading, but it is not the only possible one. The experiences that shall be conveyed in every single stage of the game do not only fit one experiential gestalt, but a variety of structurally similar experiences.

Akrasia takes the notion of "meaningful games" to the next level. Play it, experience it and put on your thinking cap.

The Black Heart

Fighting
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - Yes

Theme: Horror

There is another world apart from ours. A world that was once beautiful but now is a hostile place ruined by war and hate. A blood stained world...

Humans have ignored the existence of this other world because their destinies have never been bound to it...

But that is about to change since the king and creator of the other world has been murdered. His strength and will had disappeared as the time passed, turning him into and old and defenseless being.

However, that didn't change the fact that within him the incredible power that allowed him to create that other world still existed. Because of that he was attacked by an entity called Final: A powerful creature that emerged from the infinite chaos that exists in the space between both worlds. In a single attack he ripped the king's heart and ran away with it to the depths of chaos.

It is said that the one that succeeds at freeing the power within the heart will be given an extraordinary strength; a power that could end all that exists if it falls into the wrong hands.

Megazell's Comment - Make sure you copy of Windows is up to date and you have .NET 2.0 SP1 or higher installed.

Megazell's Second Comment - This game is EXTREMELY WELL MADE. I have actually completed the entire storyline for each character and it is awesome. On top this the combos and attacks are very well balanced. This is a must play for horror and fighting game fans. It's not a top pick because of one simple fact it's using the MUGEN engine and with that comes random crashes on all types of different computer configurations.

Hey Megazell, I know you're always on the lookout for those couch/controller-friendly games, and here's one for you: Pax Britannica

It's a one-button RTS that's a lot of fun to play competitively with others, since the "single player mode" has a fairly dumb bot running it. No online mp, but should be fun with 4 other gamers and a big screen TV. Read the read-me for instructions and the like.

EDIT: Might as well link the official page of the developer.
Are all of these games and sites spyware/adware free? I stumbled onto this page here http://www.gamespot.com/pages/forums/show_msgs.php?topic_id=26405976&page=1
today and there's a bunch of freeware games people list there too. Maybe some can be added to this I dunno.
Every game that I posted are spyware and adware free.

Check out the first page of this thread with my rules and list of every game listed by genre and in alphabetical order along with spotlights on software and sites that enhance PC gaming.

Thanks for the link but my search engine already found most of those games and the links in that thread are dead those that are not dead are already posted.

As of 04/09/10 there are 396,711,309 free, legal, non-flash, non-spyware, non-redirector PC games that work on Windows XP and higher computers. This is my 16th thread showcasing freeware games. My goal is to post 9,000 before I retire my jersey.

Will check it out. I've been slacking off on the post lately with over 90+ games waiting to be posted. This will happen often as the seasonal weather is getting better and I have less and less time to be on my rig.

Ya I saw your rules, I'm just overly careful about that stuff since I can't afford to replace my computer. When you list OS compatibility as for ex Windows XP or higher, do all games that state something like that work on Windows 7, or will I need to check on case by case basis? I see you posted Can I Run It site but that is only for commercial you say. Awesome thread. So do you have some search engine you created that searches for these games? I'm surprised you found so many that look so good.

When it comes to Windows Vista and higher - It's a case by case basis. I usually post by what the creators have written in their readme or sites.

When that is missing I run a freeware version of Sandra (modded) that let's me know what the game (or any other program you single out) require minimality to run.

Some games do have issues with Windows Vista and such and from time to time I will state that in the comment section when I know about the issue. Other time ppl from this and other forums that I post games alert me to the issue via posting or PM.

EDIT - There is also the games ppl recommend via post and PM too ;)

As for my search engine I use www.searchbot.com for the games I have 300+ worded search that finds the gems you see here. I also subscribe to sites, game author's and other stuff that gives me heads up on free games and free game related software.

Cool. Thanks for all the information. I guess I can install a game and then just see how it runs and uninstall if it doesn't work on Win 7.
