What if you saw the world with your ears? Devil's Tuning Fork is a first-person exploration/puzzle game in which the player must navigate an unknown world using visual sound waves. Inspired by M.C. Escher’s classic optical illusion and the echolocation of dolphins, The Devil’s Tuning Fork allows the player to explore a new mode of perception through sound visualization.

As a mysterious epidemic causes children everywhere to fall into comas, one child wakes up in an alternate reality. It is up to this child, the player, to determine the cause of the epidemic and save the other children trapped here. By way of the devil's tuning fork, a magical instrument that allows the player to perceive sound waves, the player must find all the children and successfully escape this alternate reality, thereby waking up from the coma.

Eager to follow up on her story, Katrina heads over to Amber's house.

Once there, Katrina finds out that she has just been thrown into a deadly game of cat and mouse, with none other than the Stranger himself. Locked in the house with no apparent way out, Katrina must fight to make it through the night.

Prodigal

Adventure
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Horror

Prodigal is a very well executed horror adventure game that follows the story of Jacob and his brother Mike. Prior to the start of the game, the two brother's parents were in an accident. Mike stole most of the inheritance and left for parts unknown. Jacob was able to make it through the ordeal with the help of his new-found female companion.

Prodigal's soundtrack is really where it shines. The tracks that play behind the game during the first few levels made my skin crawl. Whispering voices and scratching noises are used to great and effective extent, while musical melodies are kept to a minimum.

There is also a great deal of surrealism within the game. Oftentimes there will be blood dripping from something, or a bloodstain on a wall, but when you go to look at it the game will say "That's not really there" or something similar. This lent itself well to the creepy atmosphere of the game.

Megazell's Comment - The game is very graphic. Not for kids. This game should be played in the dark to get the full effect. Also, the author's site is down at this time.

Self Destruct

Shooter/Vertical
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Science Fiction

"Self Destruct" is a short, high octane shooter (the bulk of which) was made in one day (Bank Holiday Monday the 2nd of June, 2008) for TIGSource's Procedural Generation Contest. The enemy formations and waves are randomally generated each time you play! The goal of the game is simply to survive the onslaught for 250 waves of enemies.

This is the final version (hopefully!). Thanks to Melly and Tim W. for beta testing, and Crash, CodingMantis, Derek Yu, Nenad and mechturk for reporting crash bugs! I think all the bugs should be ironned out now!

Megazell's Comment - From the same makers of 'Don't Look Back'. I meant to post a great many of his games earlier but with the bombardment of content I was getting it got put to the side. He make great short games with every interesting gameplay mechanics.

A new game by that Nifflas guy named FiNCK is out. Just a heads up, since he has some pretty acclaimed games I've heard. I'm about to try a few once I get through some other games I have. I played the crap out of Altitude this past weekend.

Thanks for the heads up. I have that game currently on a back log of games that I will be posting soon. Been really busy. The summer program for the children center is being set up and I have vacations to plan for my own family so I've been out of it for a bit. I think I got 20 minutes of gaming in total in past week with zero this week.

Also, I keep hitting the cap for characters on the beginning post of this thread and so I am currently editing and moving beginning post around to make room so that I can hit my target goal before I retire my jersey ;)
This is the best thread ever.
It's one of my favorites too but I think they may be some bias to that. Hope you found something fun.

Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory

First Person Shooter
Single Player - No

Theme: Military

Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory (also referred to as simply Enemy Territory, ET or WET) is a free multiplayer first-person shooter video game set during World War II.

It was originally planned to be released as a commercial expansion pack to the popular FPS Return to Castle Wolfenstein and later as a standalone game.

However, due to problems with the single-player aspect, the multiplayer portion was released on May 29, 2003 as a freeware standalone game.

In early 2004 the source code for the game logic (not the game engine) was released to the benefit of its modding community.

The game uses a modified RTCW engine, itself being a modified Quake III: Team Arena engine (Id Tech 3, which has been open-source since 2005).

America's Army (also known as AA or Army Game Project) is a series of video games and other media developed by the United States Army and released as a global public relations initiative to help with recruitment, originally envisioned by Colonel Casey Wardynski.

America's Army was conceived by Colonel Casey Wardynski and is managed by the U.S. Army's Office of Economic and Manpower Analysis at the United States Military Academy.

Wardynski envisioned "using computer game technology to provide the public a virtual Soldier experience that was engaging, informative and entertaining."

The PC version 1.0, subtitled Recon, was first released on July 4, 2002.

Since then, there have been over 26 versions released, the most recent being America's Army 3.

All versions have been developed on the Unreal Engine and use PunkBuster to try to prevent cheating.

A swordfighting platformer with a unique visual style. 12 Levels, cool unlockables, crazy boss fights.

You can also download a higher-quality soundtrack for the game separately, and the game will load the files in upon startup.
http://willhostforfood.com/dl.php?fileid=48689

Megazell's Comment - Excellent game. The music is great and fitting. The game is an above average platformer with some violence, story line and hidden puzzles that are not too hard but just right in terms of difficulty. The game has many QTE moments that add a level of strategy and flair to the game. The unlockables are worth it. Some add moves while others add features to the games and even a hidden storyline.

Everybody Dies

Adventure
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Mystery

Everybody Dies is an interesting text adventure that throws a few of the main conventions of text adventures out the window. Dying does not end the game, and is in fact vital to proceeding forwards in the story. The game also has some interesting pieces of art that are very symbolic.

Everybody dies starts with a man named Graham who has decided to retrieve a shopping cart (that he put there) from a nearby river. The game's plot has a sort of bleak styling to it, which helps create the atmosphere.

Megazell's Comment - This game changed the way I look at interactive fiction.

Great to hear. I am still messing around with a website to collect this stuff but forum posting is just much easier for me...though the website challenge is helping me sharpen my long lost HTML skills.

I still have to go through and color my TOP PICK's.

You want to talk about back log - I finally got around to completing the final level of N. It was a bitch but quite fun. Now I have 120 games to complete that I have already posted and 50+ that I have yet to post.

I should have time during the family trips this summer.

Wanted to pop in and reccomend two games I've been playing.

Sunset over Imdhal was really fun and have an interesting story.
Return to Sector 9 is so addicting and reminds me of geometry wars becuase I just keep going back for one....more....game.

The main objective in this 30 level puzzle game is to push crates together so they form the pattern which is shown on the screen. On some levels the crates are scattered amongst different islands and you must still push them from one island to another.

Also, there is no jumping from island to island and you cannot swim either or you will drown. You are only allowed 3 restarts for the level and then the game ends.

And to make it more interesting you must complete each level in a certain amount of time, depending upon which puzzle you are solving.

The Little Eggy That Could

Action/Platformer
Single Player - Yes

Theme: Science Fiction

In The Little Eggy That Could, you star as the Easter Egg. As the egg, you must make your way through each level while picking up all of the pieces of candy that there is to collect. After all of the candy has been collected, a Golden Egg will appear somewhere within the level. You must locate and jump into this Golden Egg in order to be teleported to the next level or world.

Being the egg that you are, you must be very careful during your adventure. Avoid falling too far before landing or you'll crack and break. Also, you will want to stay clear of all hazards that may appear such as lasers and hot plates -- or you'll instantly be turned into one very scrambled egg! In addition, be warned that stepping on a surface fan will propel you high into the air.

Throughout the game, you will encounter several power-ups which will prove to be valuable as you make your way across the levels. One such power-up will turn you into a temporarily hard-boiled egg so that you won't crack or turn scrambled if struck by lasers, etc,. Another power-up enables you to run at a much faster speed when activated. You also have the natural ability to double jump, which can prove to be both helpful or hurtful depending on how you use it.

Bii-nary: The War Against Pop-ups

Shooter/Platformer
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Science Fiction

Bi-nary
2 mins before the launching of the Natomic Studios website, the database is struck down by a deadly techno virus, threatening to wipe out months of hard work. The virus has taken the digital form of tanks, drawing power from various conduits within the system. The Natomic Team realize they must launch the website in order to succeed in klik domination and so construct the perfect A.I programmed soldier to send in and rid the server of the techno terrorizing tanks. Enter BI-NARY! The ultimate digital lifeform with a appetite for kicking digital ass!

Bii-nary: The War Against Pop-ups
It's been several weeks since the Natomic website was ravaged and almost destroyed by a deadly virus, but thanx to BI-NARY, the threat was eliminated and the virus destroyed. But things were still not spiffy as the Natomic host suddenly vanishes without a trace. The team are forced to track down a replacement, eventually finding the free service, TRO-JAN. With their new host, things seem to be looking up until the website becomes infested with annoying, evil, scheming, pop-ups, threatening to overload the system. And it seems the pop-ups have brought a familiar virus with them. The team once again call on the aid of BI-NARY, sending him deep into the depths of the TRO-JAN computer to destroy the source of the virus and pop-ups.

osu!

Action/Arcade
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - Yes

Theme: Music

osu! is primarily played using a mouse to click 'beats' displayed on-screen in time with the music. This is analogous to tapping the beats on the Nintendo DS screen with a stylus. At the top of the screen, a health bar is present, which is constantly drained. If the player hits or clears a beat, the health meter at the top of the screen fills slightly. If he misses a beat, a large part of the meter is drained, and if it gets completely empty, he fails the song. There are three types of beats in the game: Hit circles, sliders and spinners. Every time the player hits a hit circle or an end circle, touch a slider tick, or clear a spinner, the combo is raised by 1. If he misses any of the above, the combo is reset back to 0.
