Hurdler Classic

Action/Platformer
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Fantasy

Every young hurdler's goal is to reach the golden balloon at the end of each level, however, there are some obstacles along the way. Hurdler runs toward the golden balloon and it is up to you to execute the proper jump in time. Clear the obstacles and make your way to the end by using hurdler's different jumping techniques. Also be aware that even though our hurdling hero can jump over most obstacles some remain out of reach, so keep an eye out for springboards strategically located in the ground preceding a large obstacle. Good luck, and happy hurdling.

Gear is a puzzle/platformer containing hand-drawn animations. The player must use the hero's ability to change his hand into a gear in order to beat the game. The hero will have to swing, ride, swim, and even spin the world in order to get through the ten original levels this game has to offer!

Megazell's Comment - The game comes with a level editor. The music is great and the overall feel of the game is just smooth. Great platformer.

Theme: Fantasy

Alex the Allegator 4 is a pure jump'n'run, just like the old classic platform games. Guide Alex through the jungle in order to save his girlfriend Lola from evil humans who want to make a bag of her.

The game is not very big, but it holds a few surprises. It runs in a very low resolution with only four colors and will not provide you with any real time video or 3D effects. Nor will it snare you with a compelling storyline. It's only a platform game with a few tricks up it's sleeve. We're sure you'll like it.

The download includes a built in editor where you can create and play your own levels.

Megazell's Comment - The author has this game hosted on free lunch with a link to cnet download...you do not need to install the 'Free Lunch' Toolbar.

The Snowfield

Adventure
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Mystery
Theme: War
Theme: Horror

The Snowfield represents an attempt to make a simulation-based narrative game according to a special method for developing such games, a method designed to avoid the need for complex A.I. or massive content generation. The idea was not to relying on codified narrative theories or formulas - like three-act structures, etc. - but rather assume "what makes a good story" cannot be systematized and instead must be arrived at organically via extensive user testing.

The method involved designing and creating many different "building blocks" - characters, behaviors, and/or objects - that stories could be made out of. Through observation of how players played with them in early builds, increasingly fine-tuned decisions were made that would push towards a final product. In other words, The Snowfield is an experiment in seeing how inverting the traditional relationship between Design and QA can streamline a development process for creating highly improvisational, simulation-based narrative worlds on a tight schedule.

RecWar is a 2D top-down vehicle combat game for 1-2 players (or 1-4 over a LAN) in the spirit of the Twisted Metal series (though from a different viewpoint). In the game, you offered a selection of 3 different vehicles: the Tank, the Hummer, and the Hovercraft, as well as 3 modes of play. The game offers a certain amount of customization when it comes to vehicles, allowing you to pick 2 different colors and one of several different design with which the colors can be used. Starting in a rather Cybernoid-esque setting (complete with lava spewing volcano), you have to progress through the linear sequence of flip-screen rooms, grabbing glowey diamonds and other treasure whist blasting cute aliens and avoiding hazards. A few screens in and you'll meet the main enemies - squares with eyeballs that follow a fixed movement pattern (either turning right or left after colliding with a wall) and their diagonal flying cousins-of-Galaga - and it's these critters that you'll be using to clear some of the more puzzle orientated rooms.

The Fourth Wall

Team Pig Trigger from the Digipen Institute of Technology has released its clever Indie Game Challenge finalist puzzle platformer, The Fourth Wall. Its 16 stages involve more than just creating clever screen wrapping situations for the controllable character. Players manipulate movable platforms, creatures, keys, and lasers (those you can walk on and those you can die from) to reach the exit. A timely placed "fourth wall" can also create an artificial ground at the bottom of the screen to run across.

The game did freeze on me a couple times, as I navigated back and forth to write this article. The developer fixed the save issue for me which works great now, but optimization remained an issue on the build I played, taking up 1GB of RAM. The team also has a newer announcement trailer, but I chose the teaser since it is representative of the great in-game tunes provided by Jordan Hemenway.

For more on the The Fourth Wall and its developers, read our rather thoughtful two-part interview. It also involves another IGF entry, Eyez, where the two set to dispel the differences between their games (despite having a similar blue wall that denotes a screen wrapping mechanic). - IndieGames.com

Return to Chaos (hereafter RTC) is my Windows version of the FTL classic "Dungeon Master", originally released on the Atari ST and Amiga in 1987, and its sequels "Chaos Strikes Back" and "Dungeon Master II". Whilst I make no claim to the idea, graphics or sounds, the program itself was entirely written by myself; mostly as a work avoidance tactic in my final couple of months at university. I started writing RTC to learn as I went along the basics of game programming and as such it is the first and only game I have ever written; please be tolerant with any bugs you find! I wish to thank those denizens of the 'Net who have play tested the game exhaustively - I hope this game brings as much pleasure to you as it did to me whilst writing it. Good luck and have fun.

Lol, AoC must be desperate. My fondest memories of that game were all the hilarious exploits, such as the patch that broke player visibility. For 48 hours, PvP was a comedy of people falling over dead from nothing due to a serious draw distance bug. Sad that the last good PvP game was run by a bunch of droolers.

1848 is a turn-based strategy game that feels alot like having a miniature landscape in front of you, with little pawns that get shoved around. Standard, you play as Hungary, but you can change this to Austria, or to both, so you got full choice as to which pawns you push around. On top of that, you get a whole load of possible types of units to make, and a wide range of generals you can assign to them, each type of unit and each general having their strong, weak and sometimes special points. Each army on itself has some vital statistics that can either make them stronger or weaker. There's the army's readiness, their amount of supplies and their moral, for example, plus the nation's moral (called Zeil in the game), which does the same as army moral, but for all armies at once. To top it all off, each unit has an amount of XP, and if it reaches enough, it gets upgraded, boosting the army's moral.

If Kyratzes ever gets out of the business of making games, he'll probably be able to make a killing as a novelist. In case you're wondering why the name seems to be ringing a bell, Jonas Kyratzes is the chap responsible for Alphaland and The Book of Living Magic. And much like in his previous games, Arcadia's a narrative delight. In the press release that he sent us, he described Arcadia as something that is not a race but a stroll, a game without puzzles or challenges, a game devoted solely to the choices you make and the things that you see. It's pretty accurate. Arcadia is exactly that: a simple, text-based game constructed in Twine that is centered around a shepherd, his sheep and his journey home.

I know. It doesn't sound like much but it's one of those things that you need to play to understand. The best I can do is compare it to a text-based Proteus. As a bonus, there's also enough material here to provoke at least a second playthrough. - IndieGames.com

Hero

Hero is a very stylized game; it's best described as a combination of NES, Atari2600 and C64 games but in pure black and white. It strives to recreate the feeling you had when you first played Metroid - you get no map of the game worlds, so you may have to draw your own. Hero includes six levels, eight awkward MIDI songs I sequenced in Jazz++, and some bonus features after you beat the game, including an extra difficult level. The game is rather short, but older gamers may find that it gives them that familiar retro feel.

Hero Core

Flip Hero returns for the final battle against his nemesis, Cruiser Tetron - but can he really stop the reign of the machine warlord for all time? Like the first game, the graphics are black and white, the controls are simple and the gameplay is easy to learn. The nonlinear game world allows you to tackle the boss machines in nearly any order, or head straight for Tetron's headquarters if you're skilled enough.

The "Normal" difficulty is about as tough as the first Hero, while "Hard" features a different game world and enemy patterns that will tax even the veterans. You can also turn off the map, if you want to draw your own, and the optional language "Retro" mimics the interesting English translations of older games.

Beating the game on either difficulty unlocks a bonus screen with additional game modes, maps etc. Getting 100% computers, bosses and exploration will only add dots to the end of your savefile, rather than unlocking more stuff.

Space Hulk is a great board game of Games Workshop in the world of Warhammer 40000. This is a two player turn-based game where one play the 'Marine', the other play the alien called 'Genestealer'.

This video game is a complete conversion of the board game with the 2nd edition rules.

The project is aiming at providing a way to play SpaceHulk on your computer exactly as you could do it with the real board version but with some extra : you can play via network (no need to have two players in the same room) synchronized or asynchronized (via e-mail), and you will even be able to play solo against an artificial intelligent opponent. The Trials Of Odysseus Kent

Adventure
Single Player - Yes

Theme: Mystery

Odysseus Kent is a mystery; a drifter, a nobody, a blot on the population charter. He makes a living as a freelance treasure hunter. Physically, he is around 19 with absolutely no skin pigment and jet black, uncombed hair. For some reason he dresses like someone from the Regency period.

Odysseus has arrived in a small village community in search of a bonanza called the Lost Treasure of Randolph McBoing. He has tracked the burial site down to a plot in the local churchyard, but the parish priest won't let him dig there. As luck would have it, the man due to be buried there is on his last legs. Unfortunately he has vowed never to die until his last wishes are fulfilled. He's been tucked up in bed for ten weeks now; the old guy means business. Your task is to help him shuffle off this mortal coil and, consequently, gain access to the burial site.

Uberleben is a 1-7 player survival game in which your sky-diving plans go horribly awry. You must avoid the oncoming obstacles in order to reach your landing point. You can either try to survive with your friends or try to kick them to an icy death.

Version 3 has 6 levels total, another difficulty setting, and options for turning off blood (for younger audiences) and the replay feature (to make the game run faster). Now with spin!

Megazell's Top Pick - This is the ultimate party game for you and 6 other friends. This game has been played more times than any other on my list especially when there is company in the home. Try it out and you'll see why.

RocketDock

RocketDock is a smoothly animated, alpha blended application launcher. It provides a nice clean interface to drop shortcuts on for easy access and organization. With each item completely customizable there is no end to what you can add and launch from the dock.
Now with added Taskbar support your minimized windows can appear as icons on the dock. This allows for better productivity and accessibility.

Megazell's Comment - Lately, I've been getting PMs about how to handle all of the games in a easy to use fashion. Personally, I use RocketDock. It's a 3D/Animated bar that you can customize to however you like. There are mods and add on for it for what you need. I have my dock setup with my gamepads so that the gamepads work like a remote so that I can game from my bed or couch with no problem. Check it out! :)

Megazell's Comment - Many of the free games on this list come without icons. There are plenty of icons you can choose from on this site. You can also make your own. For those of us still using XP - You can make XP function just like Windows 7 with 3D windows and other features...If you like.

Megazell's Comment - If anyone here has ever read Stephen King's 'The Dark Tower' or his comic book series 'The Gunslinger' there are a lot of references and easter eggs to that series in this game. Quite a treat of if you are fan of his work.

Dyadin

Puzzle
Single Player - No
Multiplayer - Yes

Theme: Science Fiction

Story

Within the depths of space and time, two planets converge upon one another unexpectedly, throwing the laws of physics into chaotic motion. As the planets slip faster and faster towards one another, a violent phenomenon takes place. The worlds collide, but with such force and magnitude that both planets fuse with one another, creating a unique and strange place.

We find our characters trapped amongst the chaos, struggling to figure out the new laws of their once beloved home. For the first time, they discover each other's presence. They are in awe. As they become more familiar with their surroundings, they find they have the power to affect their environment based on their proximity and color. With these newly discovered powers, they set out to uncover the source of this destruction and hopefully the means to restore peace and order to their lives and home.

Gameplay Description

Dyadin is an action puzzle game for two players (two players, no more no less). The game should preferrably be played on two PCs located next to each other, although it is possible to play one one computer.

Each player controls one character on a movement plane. This means that while the two players can move to the same places sometimes, they can't always because their two worlds don't always overlap completely.

In each level the two characters have to be standing in the goal zone. To get to the goal the players often have to shatter glass barriers, something that depending on the colour of the glass one of the two can do, or the two have do together while either standing very close together, or a little bit apart. When the two characters are very close together they are yellow, a bit further apart is green, and furthest is blue. To shatter the glass barriers all the players have to do is make a mouse click which will make their characters send out a so called "ping" which will shatter glass under the right circumstances, and also kill enemies.

Megazell's Comment - Currently the author's site is being remade. Use the 2nd link to get the game.

Process

Adventure
Single Player - Yes

Theme: Cyberpunk
Theme: Science Fiction
Theme: Horror

Process - is a game project in the adventure genre; its story takes place in several subway train cars. In 20 minutes a disaster will happen - the train will jump the tracks at full speed. The gameplay takes exactly the time designated before the crash. During this period in grim dimly lit interiors, combining cyberpunk and industrial aesthetics, the player is to figure out the situation, try all possible means of rescue and in the end take a brand new look at the portrayed events. It's a game about predetermination of events and the subjectiveness of perception of the surrounding world.

Truth is, it's hard to position the project as a full-fledged game. "Process" is more of an interactive installation or a small graphic novel. But technologically it's a classic first person adventure, panoramic locations with the capability of free 360 view and discreet movement between the panoramas through a point-and-click interface.

The "Process" project is developed by TrainYard - a small team of independent game developers. Development is done remotely, in free time from main work.

Back To Bed

Puzzle
Single Player - Yes

Theme: Weird

Dreams are weird. When you’re in them, everything makes perfect sense: eyeball monsters, people with praying mantis bodies, random celebrities just hanging out in your living room – who are, in turn, also eyeball-coated praying mantis demons. It’s all just so matter-of-fact. And then you wake up, chuckle dryly at the ridiculousness of it all, and drive to your therapy session. That’s more or less the feeling Back To Bed attempts to capture, and it does so shockingly well in the grand scheme of trippy dream sequence games.

You play as the “subconscious protector” of a man named Bob who can’t stop sleepwalking to his untimely demise. And yeah, there are melting clocks everywhere and tophat birds that I wish were real so I could have one as a pet, but the real stars here are the little things. The vaguely unsettling, word-slurring narrator, for instance, won’t be mistaken for Rucks from Bastion any time soon. Puzzles, meanwhile, give your spatial reasoning brain biceps quite a workout – though the perspective caused me to put objects in the wrong places a few times. Beyond minor frustrations, however, it’s a fun, semi-demented little puzzler with a bizarre sense of style. - RPS.com

The goal is to clear the stage with your blue ball. There are so many obstacles, aiming to prevent you from reaching the goal.

Megazell's Comment - This is now the 4th game I posted that allows you to use a Wii remote settings. Most ppl don't know but there are motion controllers for the PC. In fact they been around since the late 90's. Action XL is one of the cheapest and can be found for as low as $14.99 in some circles. I don't usually play with them must but the kids like them a lot. Especially for games like this one and others on this list like 'De Blob'.
