Megazell's Free And Legal PC Games List!

Just a note about the LOTRO beta, you need an active subscription (as in paying) to be in it, otherwise you only get a two week trial. If you already have an account but it has expired you need to pay a subscription again to get into the beta, otherwise you need to set up a new empty account which then goes back to the trial period mentioned already.

Moonbase Alpha

Simulation/Space
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - Yes

Theme: Science

NASA has once again landed on the lunar surface with the goal of colonization, research, and further exploration. Shortly after the return to the Moon, NASA has established a small outpost on the south pole of the moon called Moonbase Alpha. Utilizing solar energy and regolith processing, the moonbase has become self-sufficient and plans for further expansion are underway.

In Moonbase Alpha, you assume the exciting role of an astronaut working to further human expansion and research. Returning from a research expedition, you witness a meteorite impact that cripples the life support capability of the settlement. With precious minutes ticking away, you and your team must repair and replace equipment in order to restore the oxygen production to the settlement.

Team coordination along with the proper use and allocation of your available resources (player controlled robots, rovers, repair tools, etc.) are key to your overall success. There are several ways in which you can successfully restore the life support system of the lunar base, but since you are scored on the time spent to complete the task, you have to work effectively as a team, learn from decisions made in previous gaming sessions, and make intelligence decisions in order to top the leaderboards.

Key features:

Team up with your friends...
The fate of a lunar colony rests on the shoulders of you and your team. Communicate and coordinate efforts with up to six players (LAN and internet) by using voice over communication.

Utilize the latest in NASA technology...
A fully functional rover that utilizes lunar physics is available to transport both players and supplies to all reaches of the lunar colony. You can build and pilot your own repair robot in order to fix crucial systems before time runs out.

Immerse yourself in an awe-inspiring lunar environment...
Take your first steps on the moon's surface in a truly accurate lunar moonscape that is unmatched in any other application.

Compete with your friends to reach the top of the leaderboards...
Do you have what takes it to be number one? When you win, your score will automatically be posted to the leaderboards for everyone to see.

A unique experience each time..
With multiple paths for game success, you'll need to learn to work effectively as a team, learn from decisions made in previous gaming sessions, and make intelligent decisions in order to top the leaderboards.

Tailor your game to fit your gameplay style...
Do you want to play with two players or six? With multiple game maps you can select the game environment that best suits your team's needs.

Peggle Extreme delivers fast-paced puzzle action that combines elements of pinball and pachinko to create a truly unique game experience. As with the original Peggle, Peggle Extreme requires players to fire a metallic silver ball from the top of the screen, relying on gravity to propel the ball downwards while ricocheting off orange and blue "pegs". The goal is to clear all the orange pegs from the screen before running out of balls. A moving "bucket" at the bottom of the screen offers free balls, while green power-up and purple "bonus multiplier" pegs provide additional twists. Peggle Extreme features one power-up in the form of Bjorn the Unicorn, whose special takes the form of a "super-guide" sighting capability which enables players to see where there next shot will go beyond one or two initial bounces.

Master 10 levels of "Extreme" challenges
Conquer 5 Master challenges
Play against a friend or the computer in Duel Mode

Battle Jump

Action/Platformer
Single Player - Yes

Theme: Other

Battle Jump is a free platformer in which you incarnate a character that can only move by making leaps.

You must bring your Jumper at the end of levels filled with traps. Your skills will be sorely tested, and your only goal will be to finish the level the faster you can. The Gameplay is the main element of the game and differs slightly from other games. In most games, when you press a direction, it makes instantly move your character in that direction. If you release that direction your character stops.

In Battle Jump directional keys are used to tilt your character, which will move according to this angle. Because releasing a key does not change the angle, the character will continue to the exact speed it was before you release the direction. You will need to perfectly control your character in order to avoid falling into a hole or a trap.

The game contains several levels with a progressive difficulty. If you think the first levels are too easy for you, don't worry, the last levels will be much complex.

It is also possible to create your own levels with the editor, or to download dozens of levels made by the community. With its two-players mode in split screen, you can battle anyone in races where every mistake can be fatal. Battle Jump allows you to send your scores to the website in order to compare them with the other players.

The game is still in development so it is constantly evolving, and new features are added regularly.

Post Update.

I upgrade NaaC to Top Pick. I find myself coming back to this game quite often when I have some time to kill. The challenge is there as the this game has unforgiving waves of monsters and bosses for you to fight. You have to use a bit of strategy and discipline to keep yourself from using your weapons too soon as the regular hordes can be quite difficult but those bosses...they are just no joke. This game is a great primer for those that need to get their top down shooter skills up!

Glad to hear it.

I've been wanting to play that one a little more but with Alien Swarm and Quake Live my buddies are pulling my few free moments that I do have to game into those areas.

Perhaps, I will have some spare time just before September to get my feet a little more wet in that game.

Started playing Area 51, it's your run-of-the-mill FPS but considering it's free and easy going on my system specs, I can't complain :D

Wanted to give Alien Swarm a try but a Launcher error makes it unplayable :(

I knew someone in RL that had that same problem with 'Alien Swarm' and it was because they did not meet the minimum system specs, could this be true in your case.

How to Play

The object of Swarm Racer is to collect all of the gems on each track as fast as possible. You can control the size of your swarm using Z and X. Maglev is an Unreal Development Kit / Unreal Editor 3 production, where players assume the role of Tobot, a recycle bot who utilizes his magnetic abilities to navigate through a massive starship to save his beloved toaster from the clutches of the villainous Che Robera. But it won’t be easy--Che has taken over the ship and populated it with a small army of lethal spike bots and a bevy of tesla coil traps. Tobot must use his wits and magnetic self-polarity to outsmart Che and save the day.

The core gameplay mechanic in Maglev involves the player using Tobot’s magnetic field which he can toggle between red and blue polarities to navigate through the environment. Tobot can use this field to execute many different kinds of operations including attracting and repelling spike bots, levitating to startling heights by repelling off of magnetic surfaces, and zooming through fast-speed magnetic volumes.

STREETS OF RAGE 4 - HD!

Streets of Rage 4 HD is a very ambitious SOR fangame currently in development, made using the popular OpenBoR engine. Produced by Zhang Qiang and Allan.Cylakes, the game showcases some impressive and unique hand-painted sprites, backgrounds and cutscene artworks, courtesy of the talented Huang Wentao and Xia Ji. The development team have gone to ground in an attempt to completely re-imagine the visual style of SOR in High Definition, and the result, as you can see from the screenshots here, is breathtaking. There is a lot of potential here, and it promises to be something very special indeed if the gameplay can match the quality of the visuals.

There is also a game maker for TBS games called 'The War Engine.'

If you go to the top or bottom of this thread - Click 'Search This Thread' - Type 'Editor' - Click search - It will find 39 games that I specifically stated in the post 'comes with a level editor.' There are many more that include a level editor, especially many of the online shooters in which their host site provide links to mod and level editor tools.

What type of game are looking to make or edit?

I'm looking for a pure game maker or games that let you totally recreate levels. I searched game maker yesterday in your thread and found some games people made using game maker, including your bob game. I searched level editors and didn't find much, I'll try searching editor.

This is the type of stuff I'm looking for http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showpost.php?p=7464863&postcount=1
I'd like to make any type of game where I can just recreate what's already available or I'd like to make an rpg or story based game almost from scratch using a game maker.

While it's not free, StarCraft II has a very awesome level editor that lets you make almost any kind of game you want.

Check out the 39 listed when you search under editor.

http://www.yoyogames.com/ - Would be one spot that I would head to.

Pixel Prospector is a friend and has a great wealth of all types of indie games and development tools also - http://www.pixelprospector.com/indev/

Also Game Developers.net has a wealth of free and retail tools reviewed and other resources to get a game up and running - http://www.gamedev.net/

If you are looking for free game making tools those would be the best avenues to head down into.
Great list and thanks for the work.

I don't see Need for speed World listed. Have you tried it out yet?
There is another thread for that game here in the PC forum in which I responded. I was in the closed beta and it was very rough, laggy and full of glitches. As stated on that thread I will give that game another shot next week to see if it is worth posting.

Obake

Action/Platformer
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Supernatural

Obake is a platform game that could be called a mixture of Super Mario Bros. and Kirby. In the game you play a ghost who can hop on enemies’ heads and then possess them (by pressing down). The levels are designed thoughtfully around this idea, with lots of secret passages that can only be accessed with the skills of certain enemies.

Megazell's Comment - The game text and storyline is in Japanese. Most of the story is also told by pictures so you should be OK with what's going on. Use the arrow keys to move and pressing X to jump. Hold down to posses another creature. Once you posses a new creature you can use their abilities (some have more than one) by pressing Z. The main site by the author is down. Use the secondary link to get the game.

I Was in the War is a simple action game where the goal is to run as far as you can toward the right side of the screen, while avoiding various opponents, like soldiers, tanks, and helicopters. At any point you can switch over to the other side of the "red line" which acts as a platform.

Megazell's Comment - Fun old school score based platformer.

S.T.A.C.K.E.R. - Nuclear Scavenger

Puzzle
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - Yes

Theme: Science Fiction

S.T.A.C.K.E.R. is a Tetris-style demake of the PC game S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl. It was made for TIGSource's 2008 Bootleg Demake Competition.

Megazell's Comment - I am going to use someone else's quote who captured what this game is all about...It's not just another Tetris clone...

Let me get this out of the way before I continue: S.T.A.C.K.E.R. is brilliant in concept. Take Tetris, put in bricks that hurt you if you don't clear them quick, bricks that you actually don't want to clear, and give the whole thing a lo-rez coating that makes it look like you're playing it on a dodgy arcade machine in the back of a seedy bowling alley somewhere in Hollister, California. It has a great feel to it, and on many levels is immensely satisfying.
