Theme: Horror

The Soul of Dracula is a 2D platformer inspired by the Castlevania series, featuring appearances from mainstays such as Death and the Count himself in the role of level bosses. You play as a vampire hunter who must venture into the Dark Prince's castle and defeat him using only your whip and the familiar array of ranged weapons at your disposal.

Though many of the enemies had appeared in monsieur Belmont's adventures before, the developer of this tribute project had included a couple of twists and surprises that will please even the most hardcore of Castlevania fans out there. - IndieGames.com

Megazell's Comment - The site, readme and manual are in Japanese but the game is in English. You will have the option to setup your gamepad or keyboard in the opening menu. Great game. Unlike other homages to Castlevania this game uses original art. This is a must play for fans of the Castlevania series!

The assortment of moves available to you is displayed at the character selection screen, but you can find control instructions for every character in the html manual included with the game zip file as well. Note that you'll need to configure the keys first before starting the game, unless you wouldn't mind guessing what the default key configuration settings are.

Cephalopods Co-op Cottage Defence

Shooter/Top Down
Single Player - Yes

Them: Horror

Cephalopods Co-Op Cottage Defence is a two player co-operative horror game with old school pixel art graphics that takes place in the same world as my previous game Night of The Cephalopods. Unlike NotC it's emphasis is on teamwork gameplay rather then narrative.

Lady Amber Pennyworth (scientist, suffragette, and researcher of the occult) and Winston Mainspring (her clockwork valet and lab assistant) have found their cottage lab besieged by foul eldrich octopi. Armed with only a hammer and a fowling shotgun filled with low grade birdshot they must defend the cottage for as long as they can.

Cephalopods Co-op Cottage Defence was originally created during the fourth round of the Artsy Games Incubator, a roughly six week event where Toronto artists help each other learn how to make their own games. It has since gone through a period of extra tweaking, polishing, and added features.

Jump, Copy, Paste

Action/Platformer
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Science Fiction

Oh Hey! I just finished a new game! It is yet another of those platformers-with-a-twist, this time related to copying and pasting of level areas. Because I’m lazy and don’t want to write everything for a third time, let’s use some copy/paste of my own:

Jump, Copy, Paste features a mechanic that at least I haven’t seen earlier, and it circles around copying and pasting parts of the game levels. The game was supposed to have a story of some sort, but due to an immensely infuriating and nonsense glitch I decided to get done with the game quickly. The story would've been quite cheesy anyway, so maybe it’s for the best that I didn't include it. Noby Did again some wonderful music for the game. That guy is a genius.

CONTROLS

A + D = move about
W = jump
Left mouse button = choose the area to copy, release to perform. After copying, you can select a new area with another left click.
Right mouse button = paste the copied area.
R = restart
Esc = Quit

Battery Online

Battery Online, also known as Battle Territory: Battery, is a tactical MMOFPS with a modern setting. The world is divided into two factions lead by America (AF) and Russia (RSU.) Join of these sides and take to the urban battlefields in Battery Online. The game is designed on the Unreal Engine 2.5 which means the graphics and gameplay will be both fluid and familiar to veteran gamers. There is a skill system and trophies to earn which help give the game a sense of progression. The familiar theme means Battery Online is very similar to other tactical shooters like Alliance of Valiant Arms, but the inclusion of helicopters should help it stand out. Check back for more information as this Korean game approaches release.

Tikei no Kami is a puzzle game in the style of Psygnosis' Lemmings, where players have to guide an eggplant-headed character towards the exit in each level while avoiding any traps or obstacles that might be in his path. To achieve this you would have to drill your way through floors and walls, then build the necessary bridges or place spring contraptions to assist our hero reach higher platforms.

Hold the left mouse button to drill or place an object from your item stash. Right-click to switch between your tools. You can alternate between windowed and full screen mode by pressing the left Alt and Enter key at the same time.

Hero! Defeat the Devil!

Theme: Fantasy

Hero! Defeat the Devil! is a puzzle game that plays rather similarly to Hojamaka's Mamono Sweeper, where the noble knight has to defeat lower-level enemies first and gain enough battle experience before taking on the stage boss. A chart on the right side of the screen shows the amount of experience points that you can gain from defeating different types of enemies, while the counter placed next to your hero icon keeps track of your character's current level.

A tombstone will take over the place of an enemy which you slay in combat, and when you step off this tile the grave will act as an obstacle that prevents you from walking over it. The challenge here is to figure out a way to defeat all enemies on the map without boxing yourself into an inescapable route, but if that happens you can always reset the puzzle by pressing the space key. Note that the reset feature will only work when your hero is facing one of the graves on screen.

There are nine levels to play in total. - IndieGames.com

The Malstrums Mansion

RPG
Single Player - Yes

Theme: Fantasy

In 1989, long before I plugged in my NES copy and fumbled awkwardly with the D-pad, three kids in Chile were busy creating their own game based on their love of Shadowgate, going so far as to hand-craft notebook paper design documents on top of former grocery shopping lists. Edmundo, Andres, and Carlos Bordeu mapped out the entirety of The Malstrums Mansion on those spiral-bound pages. Says Eduardo, "The Malstrums Mansion was the game we wanted to make after playing Shadowgate, but at the time we had no idea how to program and make a game. What we did have was a copy of Superpaint, so we made all the pixellated graphics for the game and stored them in 700kb disks, waiting for the time we would be able to create games." The game was never made, but those three boys did go on to form the development studio ACE Team, whose game Zeno Clash was released on Steam in April of 2009 to many favorable reviews.

During development of Zeno Clash, Carlos had the idea of including The Malstrums Mansion within that game as an unlockable. Using the aforementioned design documents and graphics, a member of the ACE Team programming team put the game together in Flash, in the hope that the game would be included with Zeno Clash. Ultimately, they decided that the two games were not a natural fit and opted instead to release the game for free on their website as an April Fools joke. Due to the overall polish of the finished product, many were fooled by the posting's assertion that the team would be working strictly on classic style adventures from that point forward. Though released in a tongue-in-cheek way, The Malstrums Mansion is a full-featured game that perfectly captures the spirit of Shadowgate and similar adventure games of the time. That is to say, this shit is hard as hell, and contains a few instances of instant death without any option to save your progress. To solidify the experience, ACE Team added a fake Macintosh OS, complete with floppy disk access sounds, as part of the game's initial start up. - 1Up.com

Light Destiny

Fighting
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - Yes

Theme: Fantasy

Light Destiny is a pretty good doujin fighting game which was developed using Enterbrain's 2D Fighter Maker. Your character's attack strength is dependent on his or her current level, as indicated by a gauge at the bottom of the screen. This can be increased by executing moves or landing punches on your opponent.

Players are recommended to configure the controls to their liking before starting a game. Parries and safe falls most commonly found in Capcom's flagship series made their way into this production as well. Each character has their own distinctive special and super moves, though all are explained in the accompanying manual included with the download package.

Touhou Suimusou ~ Immaterial and Missing Power., commonly abbreviated as IaMP in English speaking circles, is a versus fighting game collaboratively developed by Twilight Frontier and Team Shanghai Alice released in 2004. It is numbered as the 7.5th installment in the Touhou Project because the events in the game take place place between Perfect Cherry Blossom (7th) and Imperishable Night (8th), although it was released after Imperishable Night.

IaMP is unique within the Touhou Project series in that it is a fighting game instead of the usual bullet hell. The game is also unique among fighting games for its heavy slant towards projectiles, tracing the series' shoot 'em up roots.

Destruction Desire is an excellent fighting game made by Yew using Enterbrain's 2D Fighter Maker 2k2, so the usual control option applies.

Although featuring only five characters, they have plenty of moves at their disposal. One of the female characters can even switch between two sets of basic moves, shown by the color of the flames. To switch, just press the Drive key although this will consume one point from your DD gauge.

Two game modes are included, survival and versus. No option to change difficulty level or music volume as well.

Megazell's Comment - This game play is very smooth. It has a mix of Guilty Gear and Samurai Showdown for those of you who have played those fighting games in the past. The author's (primary link) site is in Japanese, so use a browser mod that allows you to translate. There is also a manual (again in Japanese) in HTML format in a sub folder with the game.

reasons why it’s worth to be a pcgamer
by Adrian Werner

It's a blog.

44783963.png

Me: Hi, I’m Adrian Werner and I’m a huge PCgamingholic

Crowd: Hi Adrian!

Now a bit more seriously, in this blog you will find comprehensive listing of all worthwhile PC games that appeared in past years as well as selection of the most promising upcoming titles.

What do I mean by “worthwhile” and “promising”? Well, I never intended to just wildly list every game that can be played on PC, so I had to set up some criteria. For games that already were released the easiest way to judge their quality is through reviews. This listing originated from Gamespot and for long time it was the main source of reviews for this list. However in recent year or two Gamespot has switched to mostly console-only site. PCgames are getting reviewed with long delays or they don’t get reviewed at all. So I’ve switched to IGN as my main source of reviews and game links. IGN PC has large of staff and reviews almost all retail PC releases and also plenty of those released only through digital distribution. So IGN it is when it comes to review scores here. There are exceptions though, when I don’t use IGN. Mostly because while IGN staff reviews a lot of games, they still aren’t capable of reviewing all. Because of that I tried to choose the most respectable and trustworthy “back up” sites for this task. This way IGN ratings are supplemented by Gametunnel for indie games, Adventuregamers for well… adventure games, Gamezebo for casual games (altough here I do put harsher criteria than for “core games”. Core games are included from 7.0 and higher scores, casual ones only from 8.0 and higher). This is supplemented by Out of Eight, which is a great review site that often takes interests in games few other sites do. If a year ends and a promising game hasn’t been reviewed on any of those sites only then I will try to find some other trustworthy source for review.

For upcoming titles it’s obviously harder to pick the games. I rely on my instincts, but since those can never be trusted fully I always need some backing up first. The most obvious one is if the game is made by people who already have proven themselves with other games or mods or if it’s a sequel to a good game. Those are the main criteria, but they aren’t enough. I take real pleasure in listing lots of indie games and those are mostly done by newcomers, it’s a bit better if they previously made a good freeware titles, but that’s not always a case. So in cases of indie titles I like to use awards and nominations for such awards, especially those from Independent Games Festival or at the very least the game should have positive previews before I list them.

All this is done to show the good side of PC gaming, so positive selection was necessary. I hope those listings will be useful to you and will help you to discover interesting games you had no idea about.

Megazell's Comment - Along with retail and indie titles he also covers freeware games.

Welcome to the International Space Station (ISS), Astronaut. In Station Spacewalk Game you'll experience the thrill of conducting NASA repair work on the International Space Station. After negotiating your way through the airlock, you, the astronaut, will be tasked with jobs critical to help power up the space station so it can continue to operate. First take your time to explore the station, but then it's time to get to work. You'll have to move quickly and carefully, with a limited quantity of oxygen you must complete your Extravehicular Activities (EVAs) and get back into the airlock before your air supply runs out.

This video game features simulations of actual EVAs conducted by NASA astronauts on missions to provide power to the space station. The graphics used in this game are based on real NASA missions and incorporate 3D graphics used by the Agency.

Mission Objectives

Explore the ISS. Before you get started with your EVAs, feel free to explore the ISS. Enjoy your self-guided tour.

Install the S6 Truss. You are tasked with installing the fourth starboard Integrated Truss

Segment (S6). Trusses are essential to the continuation of the International Space Station because they form the backbone of the station.

Unfurl the S6 Solar Arrays. The space station's main source of energy comes from three of the four large photovoltaic arrays currently on the station, sometimes referred to as the

Solar Array Wings (SAW). Can you assemble the fourth set of solar arrays to the station?
Ride the Robotic Arm. There's a tear in the solar array! Can you ride the robotic arm then use the clamps to fix the tear?

Retrieve Your Tools. You have used a lot of tools to do your repair work. Now many of them are scattered in space. How many of them can you retrieve before heading back to the airlock?

Conduct SPHERES experiments. SPHERES are tiny satellites being tested by NASA on the ISS. Someday they'll help astronauts study space and possibly even assist with in-orbit construction projects. But first they must learn to fly in formation. Can you help the SPHERES navigate their way through the hoops in NASA's experiment?
Restore Space-to-Ground Communications. The ISS has lost voice and data contact with mission control. Take a space walk to bring communications back on line by powering an auxiliary antenna.

Up And Coming Freeware Games

Battlestar Galactica Online

Battlestar Galactica Online is a new browser based MMORPG being developed by Bigpoint. Its set during season 2 of the popular TV series and gameplay centers on the ongoing conflict between the Cylons and humans. Like Bigpoint’s Dark Orbit, Battlestar Galactica Online is real-time combat and allows players to purchase various ships and outfit them with dozens of parts. But unlike previous Bigpoint titles, Battlestar Galactica Online was build using the powerful Unity engine which means the game has beautiful 3D graphics that are on par with client based games. Players will be able to get off their ships to explore the BSG universe, but there’s no land based combat component. The game scheduled for release in Fall 2010 and the level cap will be 20. Expect more information on Battlestar Galactica Online in the months ahead. - MMOHUT

Lethal Application

Shooter/Vertical
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Fantasy

Lethal Application is a 2D action game that introduces a unique gameplay system for moving your character around each stage. Instead of a jump button that most players are accustomed to, we have here a weapon so strong that its recoil effect can propel the protagonist in the opposite of her shot direction.

Using the weapon does deplete your energy resources, which fortunately can be replenished by collecting items marked 'E' scattered around the area. Press the Z key to shoot and the X key to activate your special move. You can swap special moves by pressing the C key but only after acquiring its corresponding power-ups.

The game was originally sold as a commercial doujin title, but was recently re-released as a free download on the developer's official site. There are ten stages to play in total, although this count doesn't include the boss battles that await the player after every one or two normal levels beaten. You might also need to have the Japanese language pack installed on your Windows operating system to be able to run this game. - IndieGames.com

Angry Gorilla Machine Monsters

Shooter/Vertical
Single Player - Yes

Theme: Weird

Angry Gorilla Machine Monsters may be a simple shmup where gameplay is concerned, but the work Andrew has put into the presentation makes it well worth a go. His signature blurring effect is there in full force, complimented by some brilliant design choices. After my fifth go, I was still coming up against enemies I hadn't seen before - the baddie deployment is random.

Megazell's Comment - If you are wearing headphones....I highly suggest you lower them down when you boot this baby up!
mega do you do this for other sites as well?
I use to do it for a few others a long time ago.

Some were free and legal PC games like this and some were mod related (1996 to 1999).

This is the only one that I update with actual game post. The rest just get text updates that pretty much refer them to come here.
