Highway Encounter

Real Time Strategy
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Science Fiction

Every now and then we run across a recent rendition of a classic video game, and the reproductions are often so faithful that we don't have much to say besides, "If you liked the original, you'll like this, too." This is the case with Highway Encounter, a game originally released in 1986 and lovingly recreated here. By modern standards it's not terribly exciting, but it remains fun and worth playing for the nostalgia factor, if nothing else.

The object of Highway Encounter is to push a Lasertron along a highway riddled with dangerous obstacles. A group of five droids is in charge of pushing the Lasertron, and the player gets to control one droid at a time. The game requires a bit of speed on the controls, but it's mostly about strategy; you must travel ahead on the highway, clearing obstacles and enemies by moving them aside (in the case of the former) or shooting them with your laser (in the case of the latter). If your droid is destroyed, it's back to the beginning to start over with another one. Although there's nothing particularly impressive about this game, we were happy to see a few nice extras, such as the ability to specify which keys are used for the controls and to turn the game's music on and off. Highway Encounter isn't going to rock anyone's world, but users who were fond of the original game will enjoy a walk down memory lane with this PC version. - Download.com

3D Ant Attack

Third Person Shooter
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Horror

We'll admit up front that we never played the original Ant Attack--we were still in diapers when it was first released--so we're not prepared to tell you how 3D Ant Attack stacks up to its predecessor. What we can say is that this arcade-style game, despite its apparent simplicity, is both challenging and exciting.

The object of the game is to rescue a series of people from a 3D city that is swarming with giant ants. Users can defend themselves by jumping--either on the ants, to stun them, or to higher ground--or launching grenades that paralyze or kill the ants. The game's controls are simple with just arrow keys, the space bar, and a grenade-launching key, but the game is still quite challenging. In the beginning, even navigating around and through the city's walls and other obstacles is difficult. As users progress through the game, the people they must rescue are located in increasingly hard-to-access locations. With a limited amount of time and ammo, players must use their resources wisely to succeed. Although giant ants might not sound particularly exciting, we found the game to be quite stressful, in the way that a good video game of this type should be. The graphics aren't fancy, but they're of good quality for what they are. Overall, we can't say that we particularly relished being eaten alive by giant ants, but 3D Ant Attack is fun. - Download.com

Crow and Foxy

Single Player - Yes

This is a game I made in 48h for a french AGS competition.
The twist is that you have to play a NPC in a classic adventure game.
It is based on the Jean de La Fontaine's Tale "Le Corbeau et le Renard" (the crow and the fox), which is inspired by the Aesop tale of the same name.
The game is designed to be very frustrating and, I hope, funny.

Kaiser

Simulation/Management
Single Player - Yes

Theme: Conquest

PC conversion - or better said - remake of the good old C64 classic of the same name by Ariolasoft.Well, the C64 game from 1984 was one of the first games of its kind followed by games like Die Fugger, Vermeer, Hanse and so on. Kaiser is a typical historical management and trading sim with the usual military aspects. Your aim: becoming "Kaiser" of the "Holy Roman Empire of German Nation" (er, rough translation). Nowadays the genre doesn't look too appealing anymore, but for some nostalgic moments, you might give it a try. But then, as it is a remake the nostalgic value shouldn't be very high.

Note: the original German game has been translated manually into English except some menu items - big thanks to SirJohn :) You can still download the German original below, as well as the German manual.

PCGamer

PC Gamer is a magazine founded in Britain in 1993 devoted to PC gaming and published monthly by Future Publishing. The magazine has several regional editions, with the UK and US editions becoming the best selling PC games magazines in their respective countries. The magazine features news on developments in the video game industry, previews of new games, and reviews of the latest popular PC games, along with other features relating to hardware, mods, "classic" games and various other topics.

Megazell's Comment - Looks like everyone is jumping on the freeware bandwagon. In PCGamer's defense they actually were one of the earlier mags that use to put full freeware games on their disc...that I can remember. Of course, you had to buy their mag but I use to always look forward to see what former retail games were on their disc along mods, maps and mutators. This was also during the days of 14.4k to 56k era and these CDs saved a lot people a lot of time.

Their freeware section is actually a repeat of what others are already reviewing on many other sites including those already spotlighted by me in this thread but some people prefer a huge name brand to endorse something before they dip their toes in the water and so here you go.

Oh yeah, they also review retail PC games ;)

Creaky Old Memory

Adventure
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Drama

Creaky Old Memory, by DADIU, is a wonderfully charming puzzle game that stars an elderly lady named Tatiana. As Tatiana grew older she began losing her memories of her life, including that of her husband dying. Now, due to a random falling, Tatiana has decided to piece back her memories by reassembling her paintings that have fallen off and degraded over the years.

If you haven’t guessed already, Creaky Old Memory is a fairly slow paced puzzle game and one that is, at least in the early stages, fairly easy. Of course, as you move throughout the levels the difficulty gradually ramps up due to the game’s unique dual puzzling aspects.

Creaky Old Memory is a game where each level you play has two primary puzzles. At the beginning of each level, you’ll be playing as Tatiana. From there you must shuffle around your home — as elderly people are wont to do — to find pictures and paintings that have fallen off the wall. Getting each painting can be kind of a pain as, being that your a creaky old lady, you also live in a creaky old house with obstacles no elderly lady could possibly overcome.

Once you get all the paintings you must then make your way over to the organ where you’ll be presented with three options: look at the paintings you’ve assembled, adjust a specific amount of numbered organ devices, and a ‘play’ button to make the organ play music. The goal here is to examine the paintings and figure out the correct order of events. Under each painting is a number. Once you’ve figured out the correct order of events, you’ll now have the correct numbered order to us which can then be played.

Provided everything went as planned, the door should open up and you’ll be on your way to the next level to solve similar puzzles, albeit with an increasing difficulty.

Creaky Old Memory is definitely a slower aced puzzle game and one that’s probably not going to attract an action-loving crowd. Despite that, however, if you do enjoy puzzle games with a bit of charm attached to them then Creaky Old Memories could be right up your alley. - DIYGamer.com

NegaKon

Puzzle
Single Player - Yes

Theme: Other

Nega Kon was created by the seventeen year old Iranian, Mehdi Bahrami.

Perspective is everything.

The goal is to collect stars, which become accessible only once you've solved the puzzle in each stage. All the puzzles are based on the perspective: on the ground or on a wall of drawings we will find that if observed from the right angle, will acquire the form and will allow us to interact with them. So, to create the step of a staircase we just observe its projection at our feet in this manner that looks like a cube, and then press X to make it solid. Similarly, properly framing a gallery or a ramp, we will give them depth.

As an experimental project, we are faced with a very simple production at a technical level. In addition, the stages are playable only a handful, and to top it all it takes no more than a few minutes to complete. Nevertheless, Nega Kon deserves to be tried in the hope that the author starts to work on a real game based on this mechanism. - IndieVault

The Curfew is an adventure web-game created by Littleloud, published by Channel 4 and written by acclaimed comic book author, Kieron Gillen.

Set in 2027 in the heart of an authoritarian security state, The Curfew could be described as a miniature Canterbury Tales set in a not-so-distant future, where citizens must abide by government security measures and 'sub citizens' are placed under curfew at night.

The player must navigate this complex political world and engage with the characters they meet along the way to work out who they should trust in order to gain freedom.

If you're currently in the middle of some work or anything else important, do not download Renard's DASH-DA-DASH DX just yet - leave it until later. See, this thing is far too addictive for its own good, and we don't want you to get fired or anything.

You control the hero ship by clicking anywhere in the playing area, making it dash towards your waypoint. The basic idea is to survive, while collecting gems along the way. Thing is, you probably won't survive very long, as there's a giant monster at the top of the screen who is constantly spurting out bullets.

With an incredible level of polish and that agonizing 'just one more go' feel - not to mention online scoreboards that I know some of you will want to dominate - DASH-DA-DASH DX is your friend. - IndieGames.com + Pixel Prospector

Come On Rabbit is a 2D platformer with an interesting gimmick - you don't control the titular protagonist directly, but you can point at the next platform that the bunny should jump to with his little feathered friend. Left-clicking calls the energetic rabbit over, but do watch out for the bats because you'll lose a life if you collide with these nocturnal creatures.

Occasionally you'll find an easter egg that you can break to turn all enemies into life-giving red balloons, although you'll need to collect them quickly because the effect lasts for only a couple of seconds. This is a Sonic fangame which has grown beyond the initial plans. Still, I have tried to keep it short. The story is not complex; The game is largely based on presentation and style. It is seamless apart from a few 3D/hand drawn cutscenes and the main menu. The main focus of the game is clever boss battles and fancy cutscenes. One of the main inspirations for the audiovisual style is Gunstar Heroes. The engine is a general-purpose 2D physics engine of my own design.

The Sun Always Lies

The Sun Always Lies is a short but sweet 2D platformer about an invisible protagonist who must reach the flower in every level for some inexplicable and unexplained reason known only to the developers of the game (Michael Kwan, Brian Shurtleff and Michael Campion). Every stage is divided into two parts: if it rains, you'll be able to guess your location by observing the raindrops, and splashing puddles will reveal where the main character is standing when the sun is up and shining. - IndieGames.com

Stench Mechanics is a short science fiction adventure created during No More Sweden (a swedish gaming jam).

It features a short and suspenseful storyline onboard a space ship fueled by a smelly pink gas. There are three different endings depending on some choices you make, and the game features both sex and violence. Therefore it might not be recommendable for younger players.

Developer Michael Brough (Vertex Dispenser, Glitch Tank) has released an updated version of his freeware seven-day roguelike Zaga-33 for Windows and Mac. A 99-cent iOS version has also been released.

The update adds a background music track, along with new enemy and item types. It also has an ending now, which is nice! Spoiler warning: the video above shows a full playthrough from start to finish, so don't watch too much of it if you want to experience the game for yourself. - IndieGames.com

Games Journo Story

RPG
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Drama

Find out what it feels like to write about games. Games Journo Story is the nearly true story of Arthur McStension on his way to a games expo in 'The London' to play games and meet other journalists.

There are plenty of in-jokes that will go straight over most players' heads, but the dialogue is hilarious throughout, and there are a number of indie games involved. You'll also need a decent knowledge of popular indie music to get through the 'Rhyme Game' sections, although it doesn't actually matter if you lose them.

A very real depiction of the games journalism race in the UK that'll take you around 15 minutes to play through. - IndieGames.com

Wind And Water: Puzzle Battles

Puzzle
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - Yes

Theme: Fantasy

Wind and Water: Puzzle Battles is an Arcade-Action Puzzle Game developed by independent games company Yuan Works.

But this is not just a simple puzzle game...

We've put a lot of effort into creating, according to some reviewers, one of the most extensive, challenging, and complex puzzle games ever: there's an RPG-style Story Mode that takes over 30 hours to beat (some players have even topped 100 hours!) where you actually learn how we create video games!

W&W was initially commercially released for the Korean handheld GP2X and Wiz with great feedback, followed by an international release on Dreamcast in America, Europe, and Japan.

Featuring 100% hand-crafted old school 2D pixel art graphics, it definitely is refreshing from modern big-name games.
