Maderina +

Shooter/Horizontal
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Gamepad Support - Yes

Theme: Science Fiction

Maderina + really isn't a new game (it was developed in 2002) but it clearly stands the test of time, supporting even the most recent operating systems.

It’s a frenetic free PC shooter where you control a huge robot, transformers-style, which is accompanied by two drones that will help you in battle. The mech is able to fully rotate, something that is helpful to overcome the huge difficulty that Maderina + offers. When the enemy waves start arriving from different directions you will need to use your reflexes to the maximum capacity. However, infinite continues avoid frustration from setting in.

The graphics are still enjoyable and the scrolling is pretty smooth, and all this mixed with a pleasant variety of enemies and bosses result in a competent shoot’em up.

In this game, you control a mouse whose goal is to try and return with the cheese faster than all of the other mice. You are assisted by a (point based) Shaman, who has the ability to summon various physics-based objects to help the mice get the cheese and get back safely.

Mix this with numerous fun glitches, and shaman trolls and you get pure and utter chaos. With 110 official maps and an uncountable number of user-designed levels, as many as 100 psychotic mice bent on getting the cheese first, and Shamans who have no idea what they are doing the game quickly turns into a hilarious and unpredictable mice frenzy.

Join in the fantasy masterpiece! Inspired by the Dungeons and Dragons arcade games, hack and slash through a story mode of multiple branching paths. Up to three players can join forces in the fight against evil.

Megazell's Comment - Been enjoying this game since I heard about it on FreePCGamer.com. It's a fun brawler with lots of attention to details from the arcade version of yesteryear. It has a few bugs though...mostly in the text variety. Some of the writing could have used a spell check here or there. The game also takes quite a bit to load where you have 4 Gb of memory or more. Still it's fun and has a lot of characters to choose from and unlock. Not a hard game though.

Spending too much time on a spaceship can make anybody edgy. Can the crew of the Quasar nevertheless learn to cooperate?

A high-resolution adventure game in six rooms, the main point of the game is to explore the possibilities of having multiple characters. You can switch between four of the crew members that each have their own skill set, and their own reactions to hotspots and to other characters.

Well, you can't switch characters at the beginning, because the characters are angry at one another and you need to figure out how to make them not angry any more. Once you've done that, you can switch. The puzzles in here shouldn't be too hard, it's mostly about exploring the different reactions.

Typing a few, short words has seldom been as stressful as in Alexander Martin's Break Entry, made for this year's Toronto Independent Game Jam (TOJam). Martin joined 400 others for this past weekend's event, creating games based on the theme "The world's NOT ending". Players must use text-specific commands to break and dive further into the center of the circle, avoiding the shrinking blue balls and the one-hit killing red balls. Ready to "DIVE" in? I've always found first person videogames that don't involve shooting or combat to be a breath of fresh air, due to the low number that exist. Box Life is one such game - a first person 'mini-metroidvania', in which you have to explore to upgrade your abilities, gain access to new areas, find secrets and eventually escape.

The strange world that you come to explore is what had me hooked. At the beginning of the game, you see many intriguing places that you are not able to get to without exploring. This increased my hunger to see every last crevice. The silence of the game, punctuated by the occasional surreal sound effect, also makes the atmosphere all the more compelling. - IndieGames.com

Good ole Sega. Always finding a way to piss off their ever shrinking fanbase. Do they actually think that they are keeping this away from people? I guess they don't understand that once something gets on the internet, it's there, somewhere, forever.

Endless, Nameless

The first time I ever saw someone play a text adventure was in fifth grade. One of the sixth-graders didn't go to outdoor ed, and therefore spent the week in my fifth-grade classroom, playing Scott Adams's Impossible Mission on a TRS-80 while the rest of us did our schoolwork. At recess we crowded around him and shouted out commands to try. I really wanted a turn at the keyboard, but this guy wouldn't let anyone else near it. It would be another couple of years before I played a text adventure myself.

My big chance came when my father signed up for the Dow Jones online service, which offered not just stock listings but sports scores, movie reviews, Grolier's Encyclopedia, and a small selection of games, among which was Adventure. A bargain at a mere $144/hour! (In 1984 dollars!) Fortunately for my father's bank account, I eventually learned about Orange County's free BBSes, most of which were WWIV boards written in Pascal. Borland's Turbo Pascal let you swap in external modules called "door games," some of which were text adventures, and I've had the code to a few of these kicking around for (ulp!) a quarter of a century now. For a long time I've thought that it might be kind of fun to port one over to Inform, and I finally found the time to do so. Warning! These things were not exactly up to Infocom standards, let alone those of the modern day. This is a nostalgia project. Swords, trolls, magic spells, hit points. But no acoustic coupler necessary!

Lilac.27

Third Person Shooter
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Fantasy

With the theme of Ludum Dare 23 being “Tiny World”, the kind of game that I instantly thought up was the type I often played in my youth. These are colorful games, mainly platformers of some form, in which planets serve as levels with different themes. Lilac.27 pretty much captures this principal in a small but gift-wrapped intertwining of third person shooter and platformer.
Helming from the saccharine workshops of Villa Vanilla. Lilac.27 has you playing as Lilac the cosmonaut during her rainbow-colored quest to exterminate space vermin. Most striking visually (apart from the candy shop palette) is the shape of the game world, i.e. you’re on a very small planet. It’s a spherical trip across the landscape as opposed to a flat one and this does cause hell for the camera at times. The usual trick, when handling the camera upon such a curved surface, is to have it remain fixed to the player’s position with 360 degree rotation along the x axis. It’s awkward but usually works. The same can be said on the variation of this used in Lilac.27. The camera is controlled manually with the z and c buttons but this tilts it around the sphere rather around the player’s upright position. This leads to some weird camera angles at times but nothing that entirely disrupts the game.
Moving away from that slight issue, Lilac.27 is a small but well executed game. While the would is 3D the characters – Lilac and the enemies – are flat 2D images and the effect is rather pleasant. Overall, the graphics really make the game pop and shine the brightest out of all its features. The music is similarly cutesy but not as memorable on the ear as the visuals are on the eye. The gameplay itself is entertaining if slightly askew due to the aforementioned camera fiddling. You’ll be firing arrows at your foe which can be charged with a rainbow glow effect for more power when the mouse button is held down.

You’ll practice your accuracy on friendly butterflies first (you monster!) before being assaulted by blobby aliens and then ones that shoot back. The most outstanding aspect of the game, at least for me, was when you step on to a pad at the end of each planet and are launched at great speed through space and on to the next planet. I’m not sure why I enjoyed this quite so much, perhaps it just feels like something out of a theme park and ignites a slight thrill. Whatever it is, it’s fun and I enjoyed being propelled to the different planets.
So, in conclusion, Lilac.27 is a fun if slightly awkward on occasion, action platformer and one which Villa Vanilla shows interest of doing more work on. So hopefully there will be an updated and expanded version of the game in the future – I’ll certainly be on the look out. - IndieGameMag.com

Are words always a necessity? Balloon says no. Composed of simple drawings that look as though they came straight out of a children's book, Balloon is one of those pint-sized point & click games that require you to solve the puzzle in each screen before you're allowed to progress to the next. The general idea behind Balloon is this: after finding a red balloon, a smaller version of the blobby-looking protagonist is now a-drift through the sky. FRACT is a first person adventure game for Windows & Mac much in the vein of the Myst titles, but with an electro twist. The player is let loose into an abstract world built on sound and structures inspired by electronic music. It’s left to the player to explore the environment to find clues to resurrect and revive the long-forgotten machinery of this musical world, in order to unlock its’ inner workings. Drawing inspiration from Myst, Rez and Tron, the game also combines the developer’s love of graphic design, data visualization, electronic music and analog culture. All design, modeling, animation, sound and scripting was developed independently by Richard E Flanagan.

Officer Alfred

Single Player - Yes

Theme: Escape

In Officer Alfred you play as the titular character who has to escape from a research facility after it had been discovered by the enemy, guided along by a voice that's coming through the building's PA system. The game features a time shield gimmick that prevents you from getting hurt by the complex's automated defensive weapons, plus if Alfred does get killed he can be cloned from the save point that he last passed through.

There are some places where a couple more hours' worth of development could have benefited the game thoroughly, but don't let the lack of extra polish stop you from trying this Ludum Dare submission out. - IndieGames.com

The Legend of Mulida

Action/Platformer
Single Player - Yes

Theme: Fantasy

The Legend of Mulida is a 2D platformer made by Nora Shishi (Norapoly) for the Ludum Dare 20 competition. You're a tunic-clad hero who is on a quest to save the princess, stuck in a cave with very dangerous things falling from the ceiling. The entire game can be controlled with the mouse, and there's an option to increase the window size if you feel that it's too tiny for your eyes to see.

Our brave adventurer can withstand up to ten hits before succumbing to his injuries, but do be careful about where you land after a jump since it takes just one misstep for your quest to end abruptly. The Legend of Mulida isn't that challenging of a game (according to the developer, Murida means impossible in Japanese), although this is one instance where we're glad that his (or her) name doesn't have too many characters in it when spelled out. - IndieGames.com

Rework The Dead: Evil

Shooter/Platformer
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Horror

RTD:E is a platformer game with tones of blood. The player aims and shoots with the mouse and moves with the WASD keys (akin to the old school dos game Abuse). The download comes with everything you need, so just download, extract, and run engine.exe.

Compared to my previous gore fest platformer, this game has a much more intricate blood system, with some new features including limb damage, background splatter, and blood drips. It also has more boss fights, various weapons, cut scenes, and better design in general.

===The Story===

You play as Leigh who was left stuck in an evacuated city, surrounded by living dead creatures called 'reworks.' The military plans deal with the creatures by blowing up the city and surrounding area in a huge explosion. Being left behind, Leigh's only hope to survive is to make it to a deep underground bunker in an abandoned military base near the outskirts of the city. The game starts shortly after he has entered the base.

Gravity

Theme: Science Fiction

Everyone has their own tastes and biases when it comes to videogames. One of mine is that I'm not fond of 'infinite' games if there is little sense of progression. However, once in a while I am prepared to make an exception. Gravity is a game, in which you have to find the right balance between protecting your little floating island by shooting down enemies and not letting their dead bodies weigh it down into the hot lava by pushing them off. Last as long as you can.

I was so impressed with the slick graphical style and the core mechanic that I immediately forgave its repetition. I am more forgiving than most gamers.

Frustrating Tiny Rooms

Action/Arcade
Single Player - Yes

Theme: Tiny World

If minimalism is taken too far, a video game can come across as lacking. If it's executed just right, the video game can be fun, despite its simplistic appearance. Fortunately, Frustrating Tiny Rooms achieves the latter.

It's a puzzler, in which you have to control two squares on two separate grids simultaneously and get both of them to the checkered squares. It starts off simple with only slightly differing grid layouts to contend with. Then you hit a square with four arrows and the direction you move isn't the same as the directional key that you are pressing. This is the point where the difficulty increases, especially when it effects both squares at once. Refer to the bottom of the screen to find out which arrow key you need to press in order to move in the required direction - just be wary of your second square and think very carefully before making a move. - Indiegames.com

Flea Circus

Action/Arcade
Single Player - Yes

Theme: Fantasy

Think Tony Hawk's Pro Skater minus the skateboards and one dimension with a flea performing trick-combos for a circus and you get Flea Circus. Use the spacebar to jump and while doing so, use A to backflip, S to frontflip and D to get more airtime. Combine to perform combos and rack up as many points as you can within 3 short rounds. You are judged by 3 of your peers and receive bonus points if you please them.

Just like Tony Hawk's, you can mash keys while jumping to perform some pretty impressive combos. While some seem to enjoy this tactic, others may feel that this takes something away from the game, since highscores are not achieved through skill. The presentation is cute and the soundtrack has a suitable circus-like vibe, however a better variety of tricks would have been a nice, post-compo addition.

Soul Master is a 3D fantasy action MMORPG with some strategy elements published by GamesCampus. Players can create buildings, work their way through technology trees and train and command units – all while developing a persistent world character. Gameplay wise it’s very linear. Players must complete one stage before being able to play the next one. Think of Soul Master as a mix between Dragonica, Pikmin and Age of Empires. It’s a unique blend of multiple genres and is actually quite fun. Soul Master has a distinct cartoony look to it, almost like League of Legends, as they are sleek and bright.
