Ninja The Explorer

RPG
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Science Fiction

Ninja the Explorer sees you playing the role of a ninja on a mysterious island, out to slay a god. To reach your ultimate foe, you must navigate to the north-west corner of the island. There are multiple routes to be taken with an option to exit each screen to the north or west, provided you are not on the edge of the map. You cannot backtrack to the south or east.

Each screen provides various hazards, ranging from robots that will move from wall to wall if you walk in front of them to birds and other ninjas that will seek you out if they get close enough. Press C to interact, use your sword at close range or hold it down to charge up and perform a dash attack. For an extra challenge, you can also attempt to collect as many coins as possible.

Ninja the Explorer is firmly rooted in eras past, where backstories were lovingly hokey, game rules weren't required to make much sense and you were always curious to know what was on the next screen. - IndieGames.com

On a side note, what games would some of you gals/guys like to see listed? I'm sitting on 731 games bookmarked but I've been playing so many and trying to end a few outstanding platformers that I am getting sidelined like a mo fo.

I am hankering for something like an updated Lunar Lander / Solar Jetman / Gravity Crash type game. Some type of game where part of the challenge is dealing with gravity and physics. Thanks :)

Megazell's Comment - The 2nd link is the developer's official site but it is in Italian. Don't worry the game is in English. Use Chrome or an add-on for IE or Firefox to translate the site if you care to visit it and don't understand Italian. Windows 7 users may have trouble running this game in full screen mode. Speed Dreams

Speed Dreams is a fork of the famous open racing car simulator Torcs, aiming to implement exciting new features, cars, tracks and AI opponents to make a more enjoyable game for the player, as well as constantly improving visual and physics realism.

In other words, Speed Dreams is the place:

where developers can try their ideas and have every chance to get them released to the end-users (democracy is the main principle ruling the dev team), where end-users can enjoy the completion of these ideas and give their opinion about it, and/or make new suggestions.

So, if you find your or some people's Torcs patch proposals don't integrate the official release as quickly as you would have loved, you have reached the right place!

Survival

Theme: Horror

In Survival you play as a female student who woke up from a deep slumber inside a rather empty school, surrounded by blue ghosts that will chase after and hurt her if they spot our clueless pupil nearby. The objective here is to explore your surroundings and collect ten hearts before making your way to the exit on the ground floor, carefully avoiding contact with any of the said ghosts unless you want to lose your health quicker than you can say 'boo!'.

You can run for a short period of time before having to catch your breath, although stamina and health can also be recovered by acquiring one of the ten hearts. Players are only allowed ten minutes to escape from the building, so don't expect to beat it on your first run without knowing where a couple of the hearts are located at. - IndieGames.com

Sometimes a simple game with chunky pixelated graphics is all that's needed to make one smile and, well, Hug Marine by C.Y. Reid did just that. It made me smile. Must have been the pacifism theme or maybe the fact that at the end of each (wildly different) level an alien was waiting to be hugged, but it really doesn't matter. I actually smiled while playing a platformer and, chances are, so will you. - Indiegames.com

General Conflict
Megazell's Top Pick

Theme: Fantasy

Apart from having the greatest indie developer name + animated logo combo I have seen in a while, development team JARRR, a group of eight students at Utrecht School of the Arts, have also created a lovely, fast-paced multiplayer game that is an absolute blast if you can get three friends around your computer.

The basic idea behind General Conflict is that you throw bombs at the opposition and jump around the platforms until there aren't any platforms to jump on anymore. At the moment there are twelve levels in total and two different game modes, but the dev team want to build it up, depending on how much interest they receive.

The biggest issue for me is that there's no online multiplayer, and hence, not many people are actually going to have the opportunity to play it properly. However, I'm told that this is indeed one feature the team hopes to add in a later version - again, if the interest is there. So if this does pique your interest, make sure to let your voice be heard! - IndieGames.com

Flicker

Flicker plays on the old issue that Atari games used to have, where the screen would flicker if too many objects were visible at the same time. You are a religious enthusiast who decides to go back in time one year and destroy the human race. Like you do.

As you shoot at the sun, it will begin to throw fireballs your way, and rather quickly both your main character and all the enemies will begin to flicker uncontrollably.

The Thunderware Games guys believe that, rather than making the game unplayable, it adds a new level of excitement as you try to concentrate on where you are and what you're shooting at.

It's worth reading the readme that comes with the game to see some of the finer points of play. - IndieGames.com

Your first task is learn how to fly and navigate. The Galaxy is an immense place and there are thousands of planets to visit. Planets, naturally enough, are found in solar systems and may or may not be inhabited. Your GNA (Galactic Navigation Authority) database gives details about the inhabited planets including the type of government, population and economic technical level, which is essential for successful trading. With so many solar systems and planets it was necessary to group them into sectors. The Galaxy is divided up into 27 of them, it's like a gigantic rubik's cube! Software Spotlight

STEAM

globalheaderlogo.png

Steam is a digital distribution, digital rights management, multiplayer and communications platform developed by Valve Corporation. It is used to distribute games and related media online, from small independent developers to larger software houses. Steam also has community features, automated game updates, and in-game voice and chat functionality.

As of May 2011, there are over 3,368 games available through Steam, and over 30 million active user accounts. Although Valve never releases sales figures, Stardock, owner of Impulse, a platform competing with Steam, estimated that Steam has a 70% share of the digital distribution market for video games.

Many major publishers have large catalogues available on Steam, including Bethesda Softworks, Activision, Rockstar Games and others.

STEAM also have freeware games to be enjoyed along with a compliment of Free To Play games.

Megazell's Comment - When you get STEAM for free some features are not fully functional until a purchase is made. For example, the friend list will be available but you will be unable to add others until you make a purchase or recieve a gift (free game that they may have purchased) from another STEAM user. Also Humble Bundle are made every once and awhile where you donate (from .01 and up) to indie developers for a suite of games...those games may have STEAM counter parts and will register as a purchase.

Download and Learn more about STEAM here - http://store.steampowered.com/

Part I

Chris Hughes' Spin Spin Episode I feels like a short, fun mix of VVVVVV and And Yet It Moves. Players move left or right, or rotate in either direction, to reach checkpoints and ultimately get the girl.

Hughes says he's looking for feedback on how to improve all aspects of the game for future episodes, with #2 coming in July. Gameplay seemed solid, but I would loop smoothly the awesome music from No Soap Radio.

For those worried Spin Spin is too much like VVVVVV, it seems to have Terry Cavanagh's blessing. - IndieGames.com

Part II

Chris Hughes' mix of VVVVVV and And Yet it Moves, Spin Spin, is back with more rotational puzzle platforming, adding elements such as moving boxes, mid-air extra spin power-ups and more.

The game begins right where Spin Spin: Episode 1 leaves off, which was released only a month ago. If you want to know the story so far and get some practice sans boxes, that's where to start.

My only quip: the music was great in the first episode, but it sounds like the same track was used in Episode 2. Regardless, Spin Spin: Episode 2 is high-quality puzzle platforming. - IndieGames.com

You really don't buy any games? Not even fantastic deals such as The Orange Box or games with unlimited replayability like Starcraft?
These games also are a modder's delight for a massive amount of other free games, with long-term support and free servers as well.

Somewhere on CAG is an actual list of every PC game I bought when I supported retail PC games. Though I did support it back in the day I would never pay full retail. I always found a way to get it for less (Extreme Couponing FTW).

With the advent of DRM, DLC and other nonsense I stopped buying any PC games all together. The last game I thought about buying was 'Disciples 3'...but it was a no go because all of the nonsense it came attached with.

On top of this I often get retail PC games for free from various places. On CAG alone I have over 130 games on STEAM through gifts from other forum members. I get games for free retail games though bank reward programs. I get free games from forum giveaways like what 'Green Man Gaming' is doing right now. Giving out 160 retail games.

Then you have betas like what OnLive did where I got to play and end the latest Batman game.

I'll donate to freeware developers but I'm done with supporting retail PC gaming.

I'm inclined to agree with you. I'm getting more and more selective about what I will actually shell out money for. I used to do a lot of preorders based on hype, but now I wait til each game is thoroughly reviewed or discounted. My last purchases were Mass Effect 2, Starcraft 2, Portal 2, and the Witcher 2 (that's a lot of 2s, I know, which just goes to show that I only really got them out of some loyalty to the franchises). I guess it's a combination of all the disappointment, DRM and BS like you said, and also the fact that I just have so many games that really don't get old and I'll probably still be playing them years from now, so I really don't need more.

I have HL, HL: Opposing Force, HL: Blue Shield and SC. I actually gave them all away here on CAG and then ended up getting them again as gifts from various places. A long time ago I had a MOD thread like this one but not as refined. It was on the Quake9 forums and Planet Half-Life. I had mods for Quake, Doom, HL, UT, Solider Of Fortune and some other non-FPS games. Those are great games and the mod communities for them is still going strong.

But I don't think in this climate those games would be released today the way they were back then.

Thankfully, many of these freeware and F2P games have the same following and mods, maps, models, skins and more come out for them often.

The Lethal Judgment Series is a free series of shooter games similar to R-Type available on X-Box Live (for 240 Pts) and for the PC (freeware). All 4 were well made with excellent detail. The action is fast, consistent, and quite challenging. If your a fan of shooters, than you should check these out.
