Megazell's Free And Legal PC Games List!
I have HL, HL: Opposing Force, HL: Blue Shield and SC. I actually gave them all away here on CAG and then ended up getting them again as gifts from various places. A long time ago I had a MOD thread like this one but not as refined. It was on the Quake9 forums and Planet Half-Life. I had mods for Quake, Doom, HL, UT, Solider Of Fortune and some other non-FPS games. Those are great games and the mod communities for them is still going strong.

But I don't think in this climate those games would be released today the way they were back then.

Thankfully, many of these freeware and F2P games have the same following and mods, maps, models, skins and more come out for them often.
Oh really? Which of these games have such a following?
Oh really? Which of these games have such a following?
Which genre you looking for?
Which genre you looking for?
Well I'm just asking because there are a lot of obscure titles here, which is why I keep coming back to this thread as a reference to find new ones I'd likely never find on my own. I tend to get lost sometimes though, not that you don't have it organized well but because there's just so many, and I don't really know how popular they all are. I don't really have the time to just try them all myself.

You put a lot of work into this, and I really can't ask for more, but a lot of the game details aren't very personal, they're just developer descriptions so I don't actually know your thoughts on them. Personally I'm mostly a fan of RPGs, strategy, and shooters. Co-op multiplayer is nice, but only if there is a very active community with dedicated servers to play on, otherwise just single player.

Yeah. It's intentional that I don't 'review' the games too much outside of a small comment here or there. I think reviews should be empirical - Story/Description, System Requirements, Warnings about mature content, Warnings about bugs/errors/glitches and genre.

For strategy games I would try 'Glest' - It has a large mod community and 'Dwarf Fortress' - You can spend years finding all of the mods for that one and still not hit a 1/10 of what's out there.

For shooters (I think you mean FPS?) - I would get on 'HL2: Deathmatch' - Lots of mods, maps and dedicated servers. There are a few CO-OP maps where you and others take on custom made bosses and such in a mode that looks and feels a lot like UT 2k4 Invasion mode. For CO-OP FPS I would go with AA3, Tremulous and AVA not many mods there but lots of players and servers.

For RPGs games I would try games like 'Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup', 'Iter Vehemens ad Necem', 'Linley's Dungeon Crawl aka Crawl', 'Nazghul' and 'Nethack' - They are not pretty but lots of campaigns and mods available with some very devoted crowds.

Island Hopping

Action/Platformer
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Fantasy

Island Hopping is a 3d retro-arcade style platformer originally developed by one of our team members for the Ludum Dare 48-hour competition. The objective is simple: don't hit the water. The player will attempt to navigate through an ever faster path of island that vary in size, shape, and point value. When they inevitably hit the water, your distance and score (among other statistics) are sent to a high score leaderboard.

Megazell's Comment - A very well made game for such a short time given for the Ludum Dare contest. The music is great and the game play is very engaging. Reminds me a lot of Tasty Static.

1899 Steam & Spirit - Episode I

Adventure
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Steampunk
Theme: Mystery

1899 Steam & Spirit started six months ago as an experiment and now it's becoming a fun old-style adventure game with an intriguing background story. It's written entirely in HTML and Javascript so you can play it directly from your browser without Flash player or any other plugin or installation.

The game is set in late Victorian Age and tell the story of some "celebrities of the time" in the background of a espionage war between French and British empires. You will meet and use people like Winston Churchill, Wright Brothers, Guglielmo Marconi,....characters who at the dawn of the twentieth century have changed the world.

Megazell's Comment - This game is relativity short. There are other episodes within the series that you must buy @ 99 cent each to play. For the most part the puzzles here are medium difficulty and quite interesting.

Probe

Action/Platformer
Single Player - Yes

Netbook Friendly

Theme: Science Fiction

PROBE is a single player platformer game. I’d recommend to play it with a pad (I do, using Xpadder), but it should work with a keyboard as well. If you’re on Windows 7, you should run the application as administrator (right-click, etc…), otherwise the game won’t work properly.

UP allows you to jump.

SPACE creates a block under the Probe (as long as you have some in stock).

ENTER engages the auto-destruction of the Probe, which is particularly useful if you get stuck because of your own blocks, for example.

And the LEFT or RIGHT arrow keys obviously are used to go left or right.

Careful ! You need to refill the probe’s energy in lit areas quite often, otherwise your probe will progressively lose its power, become slower and slower and finally turn off, cutting the signal.

A moody affair, Sequester is a curious little puzzle-platformer. Here, you'll play as a young boy haunted by the voice of his deceased sister, a sister who died under rather unfortunate circumstances. Those who have played Fez or Rinth Island might find something familiar in the way the world spins when you move towards the edge of the screen. It's a familiar mechanic but one that is utilized rather elegantly here. If you've enjoyed the developer's previous titles, you'll probably relish this new experiment of his. - Indiegames.com

Button Moon meets Monty Python in this bizarre 'game' that's as much a visual feast as an interactive puzzle. He takes off in a giant beer can to try and head it off and when he lands, you take over to try to save the little guy's home.

The game proceeds to take you through wild and fanciful lands, one after another. You encounter insects and animals on your travels, a frightening amount of whom have the same face! There is even a drum and bass owl for good measure. Weird but amazing. - E4

Website Spotlight

Fileplanet

FilePlanet is a video game download service that provides demos, patches, mods and other gaming media and other gaming media downloads to its users. FilePlanet was launched, and is run by, GameSpy, which is now a subsidiary of IGN, and is one of the most used video game download sites on the internet. Users can either pay a fee to access High-speed servers with no wait times, or wait a certain amount of time in a line before downloading (only for particularly popular files). FilePlanet used to require registration for download services but no longer requires registration, and is now completely optional to register with the website. FilePlanet contains a variety of files such as game demos, trailers, and patches. The site has its own download service known as Download Manager which automatically download files requested; if the service is not installed or the user is not using IE, the file is downloaded through normal FTP connection.

They now have a section devote to F2P games and they also host countless freeware games.

Personally, I prefer playing the shorter games. I don't mind an long epic game here or there but too many tend to burn me out.

This list is quite full of games that can be ended in under 1 hour. In fact a lot of them need only 5 to 30 mins at most, especially in the SP section of the various genres. I have to find a script that will go through my list to find them all. Many I personally ended but over the time forget the exact name to just point out to ya. A great many of them have a mechanic in which you will die to fade in under 5 mins so the game is just that long. So here are some from the top of my head....

Heh, doesn't do anything for me personally. I burned myself out on that game a long time ago. Playing low level characters can still be fun though, assuming they don't lock you out of everything interactive about the game.

I don't have high expectations without micro-transactions. But it seems to be the first step towards making it F2P. They could make it fully-F2P when they launch their next MMO, or at least subscription-free like Guild Wars.

http://www.pcgamer.com/2010/06/30/blizzard-discuss-making-world-of-warcraft-free/

It would make about as much sense as them showing continued support for older games such as Warcraft 2 Battle.net edition, which they do, even though it probably isn't generating income to cover the expenses anymore.

Another F2P game is always welcomed. Whether it's good or bad is subjective (unless the game is malfunctioning and causing crashes and such). I played WOW years ago on a free trial and it was OK but I saw nothing there to keep me there. I'm more of a sci-fi guy, anyway. I'm sure the fantasy MMO players will enjoy exploring this new F2P format of WoW.

Heroic Sex Commando

Action/Arcade
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Weird

Developer Greg Felber recently completed a phone interview with Firaxis Games and was sent a week design challenge to create a game with a randomly generated name. Heroic Sex Commando was born.

You are tasked with bringing the sexy back across the United States. You do so by controlling a hypnotic saxophonist that would make Duke Silver proud, drawing people to him with his musical prowess. Once allured, the crowd can be manipulated into forming a horizontal or vertical line to pass tricky areas.

Heroic Sex Commando also has a rhythm mini-game that did nothing for me upon perfect timing. The 3D is a little rough and the sexy talk may happen a little more than I like, but the image of (spoiler-free) flashed during transitions: priceless. Maybe with enough buzz, Felber will polish this one up beyond its two-stage demo.

Can't wait for Pikmin 3? Heroic Sex Commando's got you covered. Play it via browser or Windows or Mac download. - IndieGames.com
