Metal Gear Solid 4 & Metal Gear Online - 8/6: Rumored Trophy Update Out Now? Rumor!
I'm pretty sure we'll get trophies, just not for MGS4...
Then...what would be the point of giving Trophy support to something people don't want Trophy support for?
Then...what would be the point of giving Trophy support to something people don't want Trophy support for?
To antagonize you so much, you lose all common sense and buy Konami products you don't actually want.
Then...what would be the point of giving Trophy support to something people don't want Trophy support for?
I'm implying something you don't know.

Hey, just got the game and I am loving it. In act 2 right now. Was wondering if I should stop and play the other MGS's first to get the full extent of the story. I could never really get into the other ones.

I'm thinking about just beating MGS4, then playing MGS1-3. Then I'll play 4 again.

So I'm playing through this "game" and I just don't get it. The story is awesome but why not just make it a mini-series instead of a game? Act 3 was just super frustrating trial and error while I'm trying to follow the Resistance member. It just gets into a cutscene after cutscene.

Between the end of Act 3 and the actual beginning of action in Act 4, there's two save points during the hour and a half of cutscenes! I know it's been talked to death but please help understand how this got a 10/10 on IGN and everyone else is all over the game's nuts. Again, I'm not saying this is a bad game but I don't see how it's a proper end for the storyline especially if Reach is set before instead of after.

It is the end of Solid Snake's tale.

As far as why it's 10/10, I don't think it would be worth getting into that. You don't think it is, and that's fine. Personally, I think it is more of a 9. Snake Eater was a better game and had a better story, in my opinion.

I know it's the end of Snake's tale but I don't understand why so little gameplay got stuck in such a long game. I'm with you on giving it a 9. What is there is awesome.

I also agree with you that 3 really got it right. The boss fights were the pinnacle of the series and the stealth was done exactly right. I don't feel like I need to use stealth in 4 at all. If I screw up and set off an alarm, I can just tranq or mow down every guard that shows up and move on. Even in Act 3, the Resistance members show back up at designated points if you scare them off or they get arrested.

EDIT -- As for the game getting a 10/10, why isn't it worth getting into? Isn't this the MGS4 discussion thread or is this going to run the usual CAG line that anything negative can't be discussed like gentlemen?

I think Kojima simply gave the fans of the series what they wanted. The games generally have little gameplay and a ton of cutscenes. To me, it seemed like he simply extended it to its logical conclusion (almost) and made an interactive movie.

As far as stealth goes, in that regard, 4 is more like the first two games. You could play them both ways. If you wanted a challenge, you could go stealth and never be seen. For the most part, though, I would shoot a lot of people and just move along. Though 3 definitiely could have been played this way at points, it become a hassle. I got shot to shit a lot and finally just went stealth.

I don't think a gentlemanly conversation is ever out of the realm of possibility. To me, it just isn't worth it, because you have your opinion, I have mine, and nothing is going to change. There are obviously aspects that you disliked that I liked. In the end, though, we do agree that the game is not perfect. As much as I have loved some of the quirky MGS dialogue and storylines, MGS4 went overboard, in my opinion.

Hey, I'm open to changing my mind but I think we both met in the middle anyway. I just hope we get more action to go with these super long cutscenes when Reach comes out. Raiden looks like a badass in 4 and I'd love to see more of his story fleshed out.

Kojima has a strange way of repulsing fans but making them want more at the same time. 2 could've been the death of the series but he came back with the monster of 3. AC!D turned off alot of people but then Portable Ops showed people that MGS can exist on a portable. He's like the hot girlfriend that puts you down but rocks your world every once in a while so you know what the peak really feels like. Maybe it's just the Sierra Nevada speaking though....

I think MGS4 got tens because people were relieved it didn't suck or didn't suck us in with a first mission starring Snake and the rest of the game featuring Akiba/Johnny Sasaki.

I think the second playthru is where this game really shines. Because you can skip thru the cut scenes. I'm just now playing this for a second time and it's just too good. Just got done with the big mama bike ride.

looking forward to the vamp battle and returning to shadow moses. all without having to sit through half hour cut scenes.

I really liked the MGS1 flashback at the beginning of Act 4/Shadow Moses and I couldn't believe the secret for the Vamp battle.

That MGO Arcade Cabinet sounds awesome. Too bad we probably wont get it in the states. IGN UK has an article on it for those interested

Supposedly there's going to be some kind of PS Blog announcement regarding MGS4 on the 12th. Don't know if it's true or not, but my guess is more BS MGO expansion packs.
Don't know if it's true or not, but my guess is more BS MGO expansion packs.
Not sure why all the MGO expansion pack hate, when you're willing to buy all the Burnout Paradise DLC that sometime adds pretty minimal material to the gameplay experience. At least with the MGO expansions you get new maps, characters, and costumes. Not being a jerk -- just making a mild point.

On a different note, I got back into playing the game and am actually having a good time. Konami has changed the game and interface A LOT since I last played ~9 months ago and I'm actually thinking of getting the 3 expansion packs for the discounted price of $18.

Metal Gear Sold 4 anniversary week.....so far all I see is the 'bikini costume pack' for MGO....hopefully they will have some cool stuff for the main game.

Well they brought Shadow Moses back for anyone who cares. They NEED to put MGO on the PS Store. Its too much of a hassle to wait for MGS4 to load, then wait for MGO to load

I tried the online play and I couldn't be more disappointed. Signing up for the multiple IDs just started the aggravation and the matchmaking makes SOCOM 1 for the PS2 feel like Xbox Live.

Not sure what you mean by put MGO on the PS Store -- if you'd rather buy it through PSN than the Konami Store, you have the option of buying it once you log-onto the game itself.

If you're looking for a quick-launch icon on the XMB, then I'll join your cause and .

A quick launch would work but I sold the game since I never wanted to wait. Are you saying I can buy a digital copy through the Konami store? That is what I was referring to, a MGO standalone on the PSN Store with all expansions for ~$30.

Ah, now I understand. I thought I had heard Konami thinking about release MGO as a stand-alone title sometime down the road, but guess it never came to fruition.

I agree with Smog, as much as I have problems with some of the things they done with MGO, if they put it on the PSN for a digital download I would buy it again and play it more instead of having to deal with going through multiple menus and load times. As much of a success it was, it could've been more if they didn't do the whole konami id and game id, and than buying additional ids if you wanted to created second and third characters. If only they had just kept it with the PSN id.

It's sad but true, I'd probably play MGO a lot more if I could access it easily from the XMB and without the disc. Also if all the DLC had been shareable, I'd probably have every map pack. Konami really messed up the execution with their whole separate system.

I wonder what today's Metal Gear announcement will be? They haven't said anything about Peace Walker, but they also didn't mention anything about Rising. Me thinks it's something else.

I believe the final announcement is the upcoming summer MGO tournament.

From Destructoid.com

Konami is celebrating the one-year anniversary of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots in an unusual fashion. Instead of creating commemorative figurines or throwing wild office parties, the publisher is hosting a head-to-head Team Deatmatch Metal Gear Online tournament. Awesome.

The tournament won’t net participants prizes, unless you count adulation and bragging rights as something as worthwhile as a toaster oven or LCD TV.

The tournament kicks off on June 26, but Konami will be taking entries as early as June 23. The press release about the tournament stressed that the number of people that can participate will be limited more than twice, so we’re guessing it may be wise to jump register on June 23. Careful though: you need the 'SCENE' expansion to participate.

Speaking of entry, immediately below is what you have to do in order to sign up (as the press release reads). Take notice the amount of menus.

Step 1: Log into MGO with the character you wish to enter into the Tournament
Step 2: Go to Lobby Select and choose Tournament Registration
Step 3: On the Lobby Screen select one of the 4 tournament lobbies to register (i.e. US TOURNEY 1, US TOURNEY 2, etc.)
Step 4: Select either Join Team (pick a team off the list to join), Create Team and Submit Entry (set up the team name and password), or Solo Entry (assigned to a random team)

Will any of you participate? Or will you celebrate the Metal Gear Solid 4 anniversary in a different way, say, with beer or something? Let us know!

Color me disappointed as I had hoped to get a Trophy patch. But Konami is probably going to be advertising this so more people buy the SCENE expansion pack. Not much heads-up time though, really...
Too little too late IMO. No point in wasting resources working on old games. Full speed ahead Kojima!
Nonsense. Look at Bionic Commando Rearmed. Thing came out almost a year ago too and it's about to get trophy support.

Question. Is there a way to reload in this game? Or do you have to quit out? I realized there were quicktime buttons in some of the first sequences and wanted to participate in them.

You do have to save your game, so its possible you can go back and do it again--but only up to where you saved it last.

It's amazing how Japanese developers (as a whole) simply don't understand how to make online games. It seams they tend to make it much more difficult than it needs to be.
I just got MGS 4... Anyone still playing MGO? I tried a couple of games but it's a tad confusing.
The online shouldn't be any more confusing than the whole game you (likely) played. And there's an average 1000 people late-night playing, and nearly triple that during the day.
Tournaments and Survival days bring in even more.
If you're having problems, try sticking to smaller matches--8 or less players. DM and TDM's with the full 16 can get pretty harried.
It's amazing how Japanese developers (as a whole) simply don't understand how to make online games. It seams they tend to make it much more difficult than it needs to be.
Explain? Because I've played a ton of American online games that make them infinitely more complicated--even just to start a match--than they have to be. MGO's one of the few games I find the interface is straightforward and easy to jump into a match, and I love how the controls handle. It's just the animation teleport after a pineapple goes off that irks me.
MGO is easily my favorite online component ever. Except for having a separate login from the PSN, everythinin it is pretty well done, in my opinion.
Matchmaking blows, you have to hit like 3 buttons to turn your mic on, 8 buttons to zoom in. The game was good but had serious flaws. Not to mention the massive glitching.
Love MGO. That said, I can see why some would be turned off by its gameplay.
The gameplay is great. Everything else isnt. It upsets me b/c if they would have supported this game better I would have bought all 3 expansions and would probably still be playing this today

I'm sure this has been asked, but I cant find it in this 200+ page thread.

What is the ideal order to play the MGS games in, logic would say 1234 but I heard 3 is set before 1 ... so should I go 3124?

edit: found a post somewhere else. google is my friend.
"id reccomend follow the story from beggining to finish start with snake eater than portable ops(acid is a totally different metal gear)than use disc 2 of mgs3 substance and play mg1 and mg2 than go with mgs 1 2 4 if your waiting till peacewalker play peacewalker after portable ops..then the story will be unfolded in perfect order for you"

I'm biased because I literally have completed each game like over 10 times each, at least. Just ran through MGS1 a few days ago. I want to say just play them in the order they were released, because things that get revealed in the sequels won't mean much to you in 3, and there are quite a few things revealed then. 3 is pretty confusing as it is. I don't know. I had to play through the games many times before I really picked up on the plot and all its intricacies as it evolved. MGS is my faorite game series ever, and I'm having a hard time recommending to you.

My instincts say play them in release order, and if you have subsistence (which I remember being insanely overpriced nowadays) then play mg1 and 2 I guess. I dunno, play em all.

I don't have any of them yet, I'm picking some of em up from goozex, subsistence is 350 pts there, versus 100 for the regular edition so I just ordered the regular one (Would like the camera improvement, but I am a cheap ass). Figured I would read a recap of the NES games, instead of actually going back to them.

That was what I was mainly thinking about, chronological order or release order. Am leaning towards release order because I'm sure there will be gameplay improvements along the releases, that may make the older ones a tad harder to go back to if you don't have fond memories of them.

Actually I would recommend in the order of release, I have not played the Potable Ops or Acid versiosn but 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 is the correct order indeed.

Thats what I will do then, two people saying it is good enough for me (I was leaning that way anyway)

Thanks for the input.

You can probably play the games in any order honestly... sure, all the stories are related but they can stand on their own just fine.

But after you beat all 4, make sure to download the MGS Database from the PSN. It's like an MGS encyclopedia.

See, when you start to exaggerate your points, whatever you were trying to prove falls on dear ears. I never had to hit multiple buttons to do any of that. So, either you're exaggerating, or you're not good at following directions. I hope it's the former for your sake.

You did have to hit 3 buttons to turn your mic on. First in menu, then hold down select for like 3 seconds. Quit bullshittin
