Metal Gear Solid 4 & Metal Gear Online - 8/6: Rumored Trophy Update Out Now? Rumor!
There was suppose to be a full MGO release, but I think they cancel that. Japan has a standalone MGO disc, but I think it just contains the five maps that's already included in MGS4. They do have two expanisons out, that include three more maps each, you have to buy them on your Konami account id, so there is no gamesharing.
They have a separate disc in Japan.

In case it hasn't been mentioned, there's no denying the Konami-ID thing sucks, but there was nothing Kojima Productions could do about it. Games on Konami's online servers, require Konami-ID (Pro Evolution Soccer does the same thing). Like Kojima said himself, it's Konami's company policy to use the ID.

Oh I see, I didn't know that PES did the same thing seeing as how I always stuck to Fifa for soccer. I have never gameshared anything basically because I wouldn't wanna freeload, I don't buy much on PSN...

The only reason why this game might benefit from gamesharing is because more than half the player servers only contain the original five maps. It seems the players in MGO are a cheap lot.

I don't really gameshare either, but it can have it's benefits.

Anyone know what's up with the integral podcast? There was supposed to be something with the Advent Palace area lobby today.

*nvm, seems like it's been delayed.
beat the game finally, woot. my second favorite game of 2008 i have to say.
Congrats! I haven't played more than 10 mins of the single player and I've had the game since June. It is going to be my next go to game since I finally beat GTA IV.

Beat the game the other night. MGSIV is nothing but a tease. There is great gameplay, finely tuned, but the game never lets you sink you're teeth into it. There is no sense of progression as in the other titles where you would collect new items, learn new things about your surroundings, grow as an operative.

The cinematics are works of art, but ultimately they hurt the experience as a whole. They're poorly edited, characters walking in circles, making long pauses, needlessly drawing out the length of the scenes. Many of them wouldn't survive a motion picture editing trim.

I was impressed with everything I saw in the game. But walked away ultimately disappointed. (MGO talk another day).

I felt exactly the same way. There's just an overall lack of balance of gameplay and cinematics. As beautiful as everything looked, the writing and acting just wasn't entertaining enough to hog up so much game time.

Wow, somebody who didn't praised the game. I agree, which is what angers me so much since I love the series up until 4. MGO will just make you angry if you actually want to earn Reward points or play on other maps beside the original five. So much potential, wasted.

I have played online shooters for years. I remember playing Counter Strike beta v7 where the m4 rifle had a silencer attached permanently and zoomed like the AUG, the USP pistol looked like Snake's MGS1 socom. Team Fortress 2 now and others.

The reason I won't play MGO is because of this (I am paraphrasing my actions, but I believe I am fairly accurate).

Ok, I'm hot, ready, lubed up: It's game time. I want to kill shit.

1) turn on PS3, turn on TV
2) log in to PSN, few button presses
3) insert disc/start game up
4) press start to play MGS4
5) Scroll down and select option Play Metal Gear Online
6) Loading...press start.
7) Log in
8) flip over a few menus to find servers/lobbies
9) Yea! I'm finally looking at a list of available games...now what was I doing here?

VS

Double-click Team Fortress 2 icon
Escape twice
Find servers
Double click my favorite at the top.
Kill shit. Die mofo die.

The time required to just begin playing kills MGO. No easy access=no community.

The game deserves praise, but seriously...you defeat a boss and then you receive a codec message that tells you all about that enemy's past history. Rinse repeat. What happened to characters partaking in the story? Being involved?

Speaking of codec, one of the greatest charms of MGS3 was the codec, sure it can be boring but you can skip it...all those conversations about Godzilla, VHS tapes, the wave of the future...listening to SIGInt explain all the "cutting" edge hardware...

MGS4 you can freely interact with...Otacon? and...Rose? Uh. Next-gen?

I mostly agree with your stance on MGS4. I loved all the throwbacks for series fans and the set pieces were unbelievable, but as a game there wasn't a lot there.

The login process for MGO is indeed horrific, and you didn't even factor in the extra time spent at the matching screen since nobody is ever playing the gametype you want. The fact that there's a counter on the screen telling you how long you've been waiting just makes it even more frustrating.

I agree, it does serve praise but it's not the greatest game ever, or even of last year. The first two chapters of MGS4 were great, than we get a chapter of cutscenes and an hour long escort mission. If the bosses weren't so disappointing, and there were more people to talk to on the codec instead of half hour cutscenes with save points inbetween them, I might actually love this game.

Yea, the login for MGO is overly complicated, I understand the Konami id thing, but it literally takes five minutes or more from the time you enter the disc to when you'll actually be able to play. I really wanted to love MGO, spent over a hundred hours in it but it just doesn't live up to the original MGO.

New mode being added for free.

METAL GEAR™ ONLINE

Available on January 27th, All-New Mission Enhances MGO Experience By Requiring Players to Eliminate the Defending Team, Protect the Base, and Plant Bombs to Destroy the Defending Team Stronghold
Konami announced today that an all-new mission for the hit online tactical shooter, Metal Gear Online, the online multi-player player experience that is included free in the retail version of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, will be available for download on January 27th. Free to all registered Metal Gear Online users, the Bomb Mission provides players with an all-new combat experience that expands the playability and adds variety to the online phenomenon. The new mission will automatically be implemented during the regular Metal Gear™ Online maintenance when players sign into their MGO accounts.
In the new mission, the offensive team's objectives will be to detonate a bomb at a targeted location in the map and protect it until it explodes. The defending team must protect its stronghold and prevent the planted bombs from detonating by using a special coolant to nullify an activated bomb and stop the attacking team from approaching the base. To complete the mission and come out victorious the attacking team must detonate the bomb within the mission time limit if they fail the defending team wins.

The servers are still pretty full as much as it was when the game first came out. Octacon and Meryl usually are close to full if not max out, and you have a few hundred more in various servers.

Such a shame Sony got pushed over by Konami's "Konami ID's" - proprietary shit. Only clicked MGO once, horrible first impression; an essay from "chibi" Otacon and having to register in a confusing sign-up page that just made me think Sony wasn't serious about a universal PSN - back when in-game XMB wasn't out and I dreaded having to coup with another friends list on the same machine. I guess I can go back and click it again, but I'll be a lost puppy and don't have anyone in my friends list who plays this game. Konami's loss, I probably would of bought the expansion pack if it was a good game.

Whooooa, another Austin CAG! We're takin' over!

I try to download the updates for metal gear online and they always freeze. Because of this I have never played the game online. I havent had any trouble with any other online games but this one. They did a really poor job with setting up this game online. Sure wish I could at least try it. I downloaded the demo version but still I get the same screen where it just sits there trying to download. I had it downloading for 6 hours one time with no success.

Just got to keep trying sadly. Try different times of the day because night never works for me.

Are you downloading via http or P2P? If there it was a recent update, same day it's best to do P2P, otherwise go the http route. If it's still doing that, I have no other advice, it does usually take a while.

Wow. You really think that the Octopus and Wolf battles were "disappointing"? Octopus freaked me out every time she came busting through the ceiling. Also, the final battle is epic-- in every sense of the word.
Also, that "escort mission" you speak of had one hell of a middle point with the bike chase after it. One of the toughest parts of the game.

Also, starting up MGO and taking "five minutes" is utter hogwash. Speaking as someone who hops on daily (for my free reward points), I can say it takes less than two.

I know, I almost dident sign up for it because there is something in there about how you will be charged, and I like WTF?, but they dident ask for my credit info, and if they sent me a bill I just wouldent pay it.

He is probally talking about automatching, automatching is a pain the the ass, because it usually dose take 3-5 minutes to find a match, thats why I just join matches with higher ranked palers, because its better thain waiting 5 minutes for automatch.

I finished MGS4 over the weekend. I thought I would throw out my own $0.02 as others have done. I got MGS4 with my PS3 back in June and was glad to finally work my way through it.

Likes:
- Design/visuals - More than just graphical sharpness quality , I'm talking the in game visuals, menus, character and environments are all beyond top notch. A lot of care went into making this game visually stunning. (This goes for audio too. Incredible!)

- Control over character - I was very intimated at the variety of controls/moves that I could employ with Snake. After awhile I was very used to them, and even more important the variety in movement really fed into the realism of the game.

Dislikes

- Indecipherable Story - MGS apparently has too much of a history for me to care about any of the characters. I've never played a MG game before but didn't expect a story so convoluted that I would have no idea what was going on from a story standpoint while playing. As such, I didn't care about the characters and all the big, emotional scenes seemed overacted to me (while to others with familiarity with the series it may have resonated). (I did grab a copy of the Piggyback Guide which has a nice summary of the series' story line, but I shouldn't have to read a 4-page synopsis to know what is going on)

- Mediocre Gameplay - For as visually stunning the game is, it sure comes up short in the gameplay department for me. While done with less style than MGS4, I feel there is better sneaking gameplay in some of the early Splinter Cell games (I know, heresy!). Enemy AI has a lot to be desired and many (not all) of the boss battles were lacking. I've never seen so many bosses sit around and wait for me to hit them.

Perhaps I bought into the hype machine and set my expectations too high. I'd give it an 8 out of 10. Quite an achievement in many regards but lacking in others. Don't get me wrong, very worth playing, but keep your expectations realistic especially if you're not familiar with the history.

I have played MGO so and do enjoy it. Although I am not any good :) the pace is more my style and the unique mechanics of SOP, CQC, and others make me feel like I am playing something different than other online shooters.

I can see where you're coming from. As a fan of the series I've played all of the games clear back to the NES where is started. There are a bunch of little things you miss out on if MGS 4 is your first taste of the franchise and it's much more than the story. The entire Shadow Moses level is probably the best example. Without playing MGS playing it won't mean nealy as much.

Yeah, good example. I kept thinking "Well, apparently something important happened here. I wonder what it was." :)

The entire MGS game takes place there. Also the "dream sequence" at the start of the level is almost an exact replay of the opening portion of the game right down to the graphics.

I haven't seen this posted yet.

Konami's coming out with a new expansion pack called SCENE.

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2009/02/18/metal-gear-online-–-scene-expansion-details/

First, I’m excited to announce that now, in order to make the SCENE Expansion more accessible, players will be able to use their PayPal account, along with their PlayStation Network Wallet, if they so choose, to purchase the SCENE Expansion.

3 New Maps

The first new map is Outer Outlet, an all new environment that takes place in a commercial mall area made up of lots of buildings and subterranean areas.
Second is Hazard House, set in a huge three story mansion – a take on the one seen from Act II of the MGS4 single player game.
Third is Ravaged Riverfront – a take on the Eastern European environment from Act III of the MGS4 single player game

2 New Characters

SCENE will also bring two long awaited, much requested, special characters to MGO – Raiden and Vamp

My brother was telling me about this. I think he mentioned that if you "preordered" it through the Konami store site you gte an exclusive cardboard box hat. I think it starts today, actually.

All right. I have not played MGO for a long time, but those maps look really interesting, especially the mall setting. I just hope enough people buy them to make the purchase worthwhile.

Along the same lines, any idea how widely adopted the GENE and MEME expansion packs are for MGO? Does basically everyone use them or is their use pretty sparse?
Just got back into MGO after a break and wanted to know before I plopped down some cash..

Had a blast getting my ass handed to me for about 2.5 hours. Would like to play some more

Thanks

When I last played a couple of months ago, it was split about 50/50. The only sure way to play the new maps is through the survival mode, which you'll get your ass kicked unless you have an elite team of Foxhounds. On the custom games most still just play the original maps, with a few with new maps.

Finally getting a PS3 and have a question about the LE version of MGS4. Where can I find details on the soundtrack CD that comes with this version? I want to know what tracks are on it and, hopefully, some reviews of the soundtrack. Any ideas? (couldn't find much on wiki, btw)

if u go to the LE's page on amazon, a reviewer listed them(sry cant link, im on phone). btw any1 get the expansion? raiden is freakin sweet!

Thanks Hibachi and Metaly, much appreciated. Good call on amazon and the wiki link to the full soundtrack details. As of right now, I'm probably going to just get the regular edition of the game and the full soundtrack (I love me some game music!).

Okay, I just finished MGS4 the other day, and having played all 3 previous MGS games within the past year, I'm still confused about something. End game spoiler.

What exactly happens at the end graveyard scene. I still can't seem to figure out what happened. Big Boss showed up, died from Solid Snake's virus (?). Zero died. Snake is cured from his virus (?). I seriously am very confused about what happened.

The nano machines that the gun dealer injected into snake, was another fourm of the Foxdie virus, this virus started killing the mutated virus(the one that was killing snake) but as Boss said the new virus will eventually mutate and start killing him to.

Yes big boss died from the fox die virus, becaus the whole point of the fox die virus was to assinate big boss.

Actually, FoxDie was created to
kill the splinter faction of Foxhound that took over Shadow Moses--since the remains of Big Boss were in stasis and was the point of their coup d'etat-- and Snake was the carrier.

New rumors about potential DLC that lets you play as Raiden, and the much requested Trophy Patch from PSXExtreme.com!

This is a 3rd hand rumor, so take it enough salt to bust your heart...
According to PS3.Kombo, a new rumor has arisen: Konami will announce "Raiden-based DLC;" it will launch with the long-awaited Trophy patch for MGS4. Basically, all you Snake fans will step into the capable shoes of Raiden for two chapters, although we're not sure if those chapters are part of the original MGS4 story. Wouldn't it be awesome if they were all new sections to that intricate plot? Portions of the story we've never seen before, rather than just the same story seen through Raiden's eyes...? At the same time, the MGS4-on-360 rumor has returned as well: supposedly, it will come to Microsoft's machine next spring, and the game will be loaded with all available DLC. Well, we'll leave that for another time; let's focus on this Raiden thing. Remember when it was believed that Kojima's new game would be a prequel featuring this same character? Is it at all possible that similar information has been used to create both rumors? It's hard to know what to believe these days, but we assume the air will clear some time next week...
I'd be interested in the DLC if I didn't have to use Konami's totally ridiculous proprietary log-in system. I've forgotten my password, tried to retrieve it, but have yet to do so several months ago.

And I've been meaning to play this game for a 3rd run-through, and a trophy patch would be the perfect incentive to do so. :)

I wonder if I'd have to go through and get my Big Boss Emblem again, or if, predictably, the trophy patch (1 year after the game came out!) would not be retroactive.

I'm not one to play a game exclusively for Trophies, but for my personal GotY of 2008, it would be an exception. Got to resist the temptation to use the invisible OctoCamo since that breaks the whole game.
