Metal Gear Solid Essentials coming March 18th - $29.99
you think this is gonna come out for xbox 360? maybe ps3?
Highly unlikely. More like when pig can fly ;)

Konami isn't very active in the 'remake' business.
you think this is gonna come out for xbox 360? maybe ps3?
No. But MGS is already on the Japanese PSN store. So that's as close as it'll get.

just to clarify, since this is a long thread and it's hard to wade through it all:

the essentials collection does NOT have the original MSX MG1 and MG2?

correct

No, it does not, because the MGS3 included only includes disc 1. If you want the MSX ports, you will have to get a complete MGS3: Subsistence with disc 2.

Also, no Metal Gear Solid VR Missions / Integral.
You can activate the analog sticks for MGS1 by hitting the home button during the game, going into controller settings, and changing digital to analog.

You can also switch controller ports this way (for a certain boss ;))
That is to funny, my friend has been irate about the psycho mantis fight cause he doesn't have a second ps3 controller. He plans to start playing again tomorrow after telling him that.

It seems like it....I work at CircuitCity and we only got 2 copies since it's been out! When we had them for $24.99 they didn't even send us any more of them for the ad. I got my copy a Gamestop for 41¢ after a couple of trade ins of games I got free from Sony...

Gamestop's used copies were going for obscene prices as well. They were selling each game serperately and if I remember right they were charging $34.99 for MGS3!

I have a backorder pending at Amazon (got it for $23.74 in my Gold Box) and it says it will ship July 1 to July 9.

I sincerely doubt this is OOP yet. MGS4 hype has just snapped up all the available copies. I've seen this plenty of places locally B&M, including Wal-Mart, Gamestop, and fye.

Yeah, I've seen it at Best Buy and Fry's has had it on ad several weeks recently at $24.99. Funny, I was just thinking this week when I saw it at BB that I needn't have been in such a rush to buy it

Originally, I was hoping to get it at Target with the $5 off coupon, but that's one store where I haven't seen it - not sure they ever stocked it.
If you want the MSX games, Subsistence is $24.99 used at GameStop.
Yeah, this sucks. I can't bring myself to trade in the actual Snake Eater game, but I don't have the money Subsistence either. Plus since I skipped out on the L.E. when it first came out I've never tried to go back even though I've wanted to play the first two MG games since '98. I may have to find a way to procure a complete copy of Subsistence.

Just to clarify, would I need to beat MGS3 again to unlock the first two MG games or are they ready to play whenever? I've already beat MGS3 a bunch of times and I have to go through 4 again, as well as a number of other games. They should just put them up on the PSN. I'd gladly drop $15 or so for the two games on there.
They don't actually have it in stock.
Reikon is right. The other problem: DeepDiscount is a great store ordinarily, but completely unreliable when an item is out of stock. They keep product pages up forever and, unlike Amazon, allow you to reserve items they've no prayer of ever shipping. If you have to have the MGSE box set, you should probably buy it elsewhere.

I sold a sealed copy of subsistence for a decent amount on Amazon, I was thinking about picking up the essential collection because I saw it around here in some stores, I don't think essentials is going to be rare like subsistence was.

be careful, as it could be the new version with only one disc (at least the copy i found with store locator.)
Don't forget for those who have a Microcenter near them. They can pick this title up new for $19.99 with coupon...
What coupon is that?

should i get the essientials pack?....... would it be worth anything in a couple years?....... should i get 2?, i live rite nextto a CC so i can them easily

If I recall, you can just pop in disc two and play the MSX games without beating MGS3:S. However, if you only played Snake Eater, the third person camera makes things quite different, and it might be worth another shot

Do the new copies not have a "Not For Resale" on the back? Because I don't understand how Gamestop is actually selling these individually. Last night I saw two copies of the original Subsistence, that's why I suggested getting the used copy of those for the MSX games. I had no idea Gamestop was selling the new versions, too. Then again, it is Gamestop...

The MSX games are on the second disc Persistence, ready for you to play whenever.

The MSX games should be released as downloadables on any of the current consoles. I know the Wii Virtual Console got MSX recently in Japan, PSN is perfect since Metal Gear is at home on the Playstation with the recent MGS4 release, and for the Xbox there's always Live Arcade.

Are the original two metal gear games any good? I know purists/completionists would want it for obvious reasons, but does it hold up as well gameplay wise as some older NES era games do?

I want to know if I will like MG1/MG2 if I loved MGS(PS1). I've heard they play similarly.

The first MSX game is similar to the NES version, but that one ended with Metal Gear as a gigantic computer... Good thing the true MSX version has you actually fighting Metal Gear. The NES version was pretty heavily altered port. The second MSX game is NOT the blasphemous Snake's Revenge. The second one is a game never before released in America.

I'd say the MSX games held up pretty well. I find the games to be pretty difficult though. The MGS series is a real breeze in comparison. I think stealth is a little more emphasized at the same time you don't have a very good selection of equipment to work with. I do like the second one better since it feels a lot like the GameBoy Color Metal Gear Solid (Ghost Babel), and it's a little easier to get into than the first one.

MG2 is so similar to MGS1 that it pretty much IS MGS1 in 2D. In my opinion, they are two of the best games from that era.

Although it can take some getting used to the primitive AI: guards only see straight ahead; you can literally be standing right next to them as long as they're facing one of the three directions that are not directly towards you.

Also typical of that era, you're not always given as much guidance as to what you're supposed to do next. There are times when I think a FAQ is pretty much required.

That said, I think they are definitely worth playing, and it's always irked me how they're pretty much ignored. I can't stand it when people mention MGS1 as "the first Metal Gear."

Well, most people refer to the Metal Gear series with MGS1 as the first Metal Gear for a number of reasons. Besides the non-US release of 2, MGS is the first Metal Gear that really offered the full cinematic experience typical of games rendered in 3-D. I haven't played the first two MG games or the GBC one, but I think this series suffers from the same syndrome Final Fantasy does in that regard. For many people, FFVII is the 'first' Final Fantasy because it hit such a large market and drew the new crowds in to the 3-D~esque realm. If each Final Fantasy came with a subname instead of a number I am almost certain that a good number of people, modern gamers especially, would refer to Final Fantasy: Cloud as the first FF game. Since the game wasn't called MG3 and instead added 'Solid' any new comers automatically assume it's the first MG game, and since I assume most MG gamers are, like myself, either just about 20 so the first two passed them over, or were part of the MG 'mainstream' boom in '98, it's the first game.

Similarly, I see a few paralells between MGS and FFVII. Both are classic staples of early 3-D gaming, both built large fanbases in American and Japan, and both were followed up by games that much of the audience of 'the originals' frowned upon because they were too different. However, I'm also of the oppinion that FFVII is highly overrated, nowhere near as good as VIII, IX, X, or XII, doesn't touch VI or a few other older ones, and can't even compare to MGS on any level. Then again, I also think MGS2 is the best of the MGS series, which a lot of people disagree with. I may need to play through 4 a few more times and let it age a bit, like I did with 2.

keep in mind they changed a few things in the new version of MG and MG2. For example Big Boss no longer looks like Sean Connery :( You can play the original on an MSX emulator
UPDATE: MSRP is $29.99
Amazon

According to Play-asia, the US is getting a collection of the three MGS games in March. I was browsing PS2 preorders when I noticed this...

http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-fe-49-en-70-2jtb.html

If they're right, and it includes the enhanced versions of MGS 2/3, it's a really good deal at 30-35 dollars. I'll probably skip it as I still have the Substance/Subsistance versions on PS2 but for anyone scouring eBay for them, you should probably wait.

I haven't really looked around for further confirmation but PA is a damn good store and unless it gets cancelled by Konami, I'd say it's confirmed.
Where can I purchase this game for a cheaper price? its not $29.99 anymore. I checked amazon and its $34.90 and up  Does anyone know where I can get it for less?

This looks like a reseller to me. Amazon nor Gamestop have them anymore meaning konami made this unique package in a limited quantity. Prices are also raised on ebay so im gonna search for another one to resell with my left over giftcards :). Like i said before i got this when it came out and its a steal for that msrp.
I saw a few copies at my local Best Buy today. Check some local stores and some might still have some left.
How much??

So i know this has been asked like a billion times but if im loving the story of MGS4 and wanna learn more about it, should i play the original three or just read up about the stories more in depth ? i guess what im asking is if i like the pacing of MGS4, is the pacing of the other three alot slower or what?

Don't forget that you can download the whole story on PSN currently.

I just got the Metal Gear Solid Essential Collection from gamestop last week. It was brand new/sealed, but MGS2:Sub was missing it's instructional manual.

Sucks.

Really? I heard that there was just one giant, meaty manual for all three games included in the Essentials Collection.

No, both MGS1 and MGS3 came with separate manuals.

I doubt you will find it at any online stores so search in local ones. Walmart.com can check store inventory to see if they have it at local stores. Circuit city had the collection on sale for $25 weeks ago so try there also.
Gamestop's used copies were going for obscene prices as well. SKU for MGS1, since they stopped selling "all" PS1 games last year.

Not only can Metal Gear launch a nuclear warhead from anywhere on earth, it has the power to single-handedly circumvent Gamestop's policies on which dead system's games they will still sell.

Pretty powerful, considering a forum full of CAGs can't get them to budge on their shitty gutting policy.

I think they are selling the MGS3 copy for $25, which is what they charge for Subsistence. It's still not right, though, considering that Subsistence has a 2nd disc, and this version doesn't.
