Metroid: Other M - The CAG Thread

Just about beat Super Metroid in preparation of Other M. I have it on the Virtual Console but played it on an SNES this time. I missed 1 missile tank on my VC file and saved at the point before Mother Brain. I was so pissed off I couldn't go back to get it.

I should quote posts more often.

Just for the sake of the topic, I MIGHT be getting to play this tomorrow. If I'm not on CAG tomorrow, it probably means I died from the excitement of playing or getting arrested from trying to take a copy of the game. I don't know what would be better though.

Haha, me too. Got it on VC a few weeks ago, I'm savoring the moment to beat it though. RIGHT before Aug 31st I'll beat it. :)

Oh really??

Yes, really. So, where I should I begin?

Gameplay to cutscene ratio was more gameplay than cutscene. If you're expecting a Metal Gear game, or made to believe it is one in terms of gameplay to cutscene, you're a fool. I didn't get to play it long, maybe 15 minutes or so. If I could've played more, I would have.

So tempting to quote the name. So very tempting.

It's not Uncharted quality, but nothing is. It's not as bad as you'd think. I think some reviewers are going say 'this is why Nintendo shouldn't do voice acting in games' when these are the same people who demand voice acting in Zelda. Samus didn't "talk", it was all thoughts/memories, and you don't see a ton of that in games. So I don't really know where to draw a good comparison.

Well, that seems to fit in with the what the Iwata Asks said.

Voice acting can still suck at least a three-litre bag of dicks in general, though.
I think Samus' monologue, at least the parts I heard, makes her seem like she's out of touch with humanity.
Seems to be in line with how I might view Samus' personality, at least what little we know of it. I suppose that's a good thing.

I know more about it than most, I attribute that to reading the Metroid Manga they released in Japan detailing the whole Samus backstory. It's a pretty good read as far as mangas go. Although I imagine they'll only go into detail about the
tragedy part
. Speaking of story, I watched the GTTV trailer again, and does anyone else get the feeling that they're about to do a major retcon here? Yeah, I don't know. I've had that feeling for a while, but that seems to further support my guess.

Anything particular?

I could see them throwing the story to the wind and have Ridley in every single game ala Bowser/Ganondorf.
It almost seems like after you've played it a bit that you are a little let down. Is that true?
I don't like playing games when I stand up that I normally sit down for. When I originally played Super Mario Galaxy I was pretty lukewarm on it. Now, I love Super Mario Galaxy a lot. I mainly chock the first impression up to the environment I was in when I originally played it.

I am still anxiously anticipating this game, but there's a small part of me that is afraid of change here. I've loved all the metroids (even Return of Samus, Hunters, & Pinball), but I'm used to super-tight controls in the Prime & GBA series. I pray that Team Ninja & Nintendo kept the series spot-on controls intact (opinions seem to vary based on the media sites' previews).

If nothing else, I'm excited to delve into Samus' backstory more. I'm also hoping for a few throwback bosses from Super
:phantoon looks likely, maybe Crocomire Jr., please!
!

There are a whole bunch of trailers going up at Gametrailers. Some are gameplay, some are commercials, some are other things.
They dont take place in that order? What did they miss, other than ignoring Metroid Prime?
Just the 4 Prime (1>H>2>3) games which take place between Metroid/Zero Mission and Metroid II.

I keep telling you guys that Sakamoto doesn't think too highly of the Prime series.

I imagine in the inevitable Metroid II remake they'll explain that she had "Phazon Madness" and now can't remember anything about those days.

Personally, I think it is more that Metroid Prime plays more like "The Further Adventures of Samus Aran" rather than something that added to the mythos. The events there don't have much of an effect on what happened in Metroid II.

I can see where you're coming from. I imagine that's what they told Retro to do with the Prime series, with that one minor exception.

I've only played Metroid Prime 1 and I didn't really get that into it because it didn't use a dual analog control scheme. I do have the Trilogy set so I'm hoping the motion controls make it more enjoyable.

I hope they don't go back to the first-person perspective with Metroid. Make it third-person like RE4/5. With first-person perspective, I'm conditioned to go from point A to point B as fast as possible. I feel third-person is better with exploration. I know you can do both in Metroid but I focus on getting every power-up rather than completion time since the latter usually requires mastering tricks or glitches.
even though i didnt care for ninja gaiden 2. its freakin metroid!
Haha, what the.. NG and Metroid have nothing to do with one another, only the developer.

Thought I'd give you a refresher course sir. ;)

Well, they are borrowing liberally from the kinds of actions one might see in newer the NG.

Not really.
I just hope it turns out better than ng 2
Hahaaaaahahaa! You say the craziest things, I love it.

Anything, ANYTHING Metroid will be better than NG2. :)

According to people I trust, if you think it's more Ninja Gaiden than Metroid, then you either have never played a 2d Metroid game before, or you have some sort of vendetta against Nintendo. Sure, there are more enemies than a standard 2D Metroid game, but the game isn't exactly punishing. Heck, there aren't even eagles in this game. I mean, how can you think it's a Ninja Gaiden game without eagles!?

Also, from Team Ninja it's the Sigma team (The guys who ported Black to PS3 and the guys who fixed NG2 for PS3), so they have a good history.

If I had to wager a guess, I'd say that the music in the latter half of the commercial is the title screen music.

It's also music like that which makes me wish Nintendo offered CD's of their games.

Swapped them out. If you're in Chicago this weekend, the game is apparently playable at the Chicago Comic Con, whatever that is.

I don't know if I am looking forward to this game or not, I mean... I'm not much into Metroid (mostly because I have not really played a Metroid Prime game, except for right now... Playing through the Metroid Prime games) I mean, it does look nice, but I'm going to wait to see what people say about it before I pick it up.
