MLB 09: The Show CAG League - WEEK 7 STANDINGS! READ POST #1065!!!

Well I'd be fine going the non-draft route, even if a key player gets injured, as I like to emulate the "real world" when I play.

I could see people getting irritated that we would have to do the team selection thing all over again, but getting the actual season started would probably be quicker? I'm just worried about everything falling apart once we have our queues set, and having to start all over again.

But whatever works, I don't mind either way.

The problem is, with 16 people, there really aren't enough "good teams" to allow everyone a shot at being competitive. This was the whole thought behind doing the draft to begin with. As it stands right now, we've got guys set up to be the Giants, Mariners, Blue Jays, Orioles, Rockies, and Padres. Not exactly a fair fight.

I'd also like to add, emulating the "real world" is great. But when you start losing because of things that aren't your fault, and you can no longer perform at the level of other members of the league, it begins to feel completely simulated. Like it doesn't matter what you do because external factors are deciding the game's outcome. Where's my man Wpark to tell you how much fun that is? lol

Actually, I want to comment on this point too. That's a totally valid concern, and it could happen. But I guess I'm just at the point where I want to play the game as it was advertised to me back in January. If the game isn't capable of following through on those promises, then I'll find something else to do. How many hoops have we jumped through already trying to get this damn thing off the ground? If having a simple draft breaks the game, then I'm just probably not going to be able to enjoy leagues in this game. At that point, I think we call a spade a spade.
 
I agree with you N8.

It seems as if SCEA is making it as difficult as possible to get what WE want out of the game. I don't know why they wouldn't have tested leagues prior to shipping the game out to ensure that it would run smoothly. It's arguably one of the biggest features of the game and, in my opinion, sounds completely broken.

All right, we've got 4 out of 16 guys signed up for the league. Come on guys. Let's get those invites accepted. The longer you wait, the less time you've got to arrange your draft picks. I really want this league to work out because the games themselves are actually more enjoyable than last year. I've probably played like 7 of you already, and have experienced minimal lag. Plus, with 16 teams, there will be 8 teams that make the playoffs. So, that's pretty cool to see half the league make it. The draft is in 4 days!

Wow, this draft queue is completely fucked. I was able to queue up a whole lot more than 6, but there was some interesting stuff that came up. First, I found out after I went to double check my complete list that some of the players I queued up didn't show up. I guess for some reason it chose someone else around that player on the list. Also, I couldn't even queue up some people for some reason. Oh, and I didn't have auto-draft on for anyone that's curious.

How Sony did fuck this up so bad?

Just posting this as a constant reminder to everyone: DO NOT CHOOSE ANY PLAYER WHO WAS A FREE AGENT ON THE DEFAULT ROSTER IN THE DRAFT. You won't be able to use him, and it will screw up your roster.
 
Supreme, I posted your problem in the "technical support" forum for The Show. At this point, I'm just interested if Sony has anything to say. Considering how much time they invest in this game (pre-release blogs, weekly roster updates, etc.), I would be blown away if they weren't working on a patch. I just want to hear them come out and say it.
 
All right, we've got 10 out of 16 guys signed up. We're still missing yukine, ivanctorres, xistence, Wpark83, NoNova, and BasketCase1080. The draft is less than four days away. Where are you guys?
 
I'm checking in here.

When it rains, it pours. My PS3 is now having issues reading discs. I'm holding off on signing up because I don't want to join and then have my PS3 crap out : / I'm going to try and put some time into finding the problem today. Of course its just my luck.

I'll provide an update in a few hours.
 
If xistence can't play I'll step up to the plate if you don't have any reliable subs. However I'd really like to see the guys that REALLY want in get it. If I do end up taking a sub I'll be very committed because that's weak sauce to join and not play. Like I said I WILL fill if you ever need it.

Otherwise good luck to all, and N8 you really deserve to have a successful league with all the work you've put in.

If xistence can't play, a couple other guys have expressed interest. My problem right now is it's not like he's the only one we're waiting on. As things stand, the draft is 3 days away. And I'll say this, if we miss it because people aren't signed up in time, they'll be kicked, no questions asked. We've had enough problems as is, but I'm not going to pull teeth all season. Counting this post, 4 of the last 6 have been from me. It's sad that I've actually needed to bump this thread.

Well just keep me in mind. Like I said I'd really like to see the guys who REALLY wanted in and who were interested be able to play. I'm just saying that I am a dependable replacement if you need one who will actually be active, hopefully you don't need me and everything works out fine.

Well, I'm not opposed to it, and I think it would be good to keep this thread at the top of the board. But at the same time, I don't want people to miss important posts and then claim they "didn't know".

Aside from getting everybody signed up, right now, the most important thing to know is to NOT draft players who were free agents on the default roster (Manny, Sheets, Abreu, Griffey, Pettitte, OCab, Pudge, etc.), as the game won't let you use them and it will mess up your roster. If I had any confidence at all that everyone is aware of this, I'd be fine with general baseball talk.
 
Update time.

I spent quite some time yesterday trying to diagnose and fix the problem. I tried a few different games and movies; sometimes they would be read by the system and sometimes they wouldn't be. It was a pretty frustrating day. That being said, I have a few options, but all are pretty time-consuming. It's still under warranty, so the best would be to just send it back to Sony, but I really don't know how long that will take. On the other hand, I could purchase a laser off eBay, but having a warranty seems to make that choice null and void.

At this point, barring an electronic miracle, I don't want to jeopardize the league by attempting to draft (if it decides to read discs that day )and then having the system crap out entirely. Its looking like it would be better to let a viable candidate fill my shoes in the league. It really pisses me off because I was looking forward to dominating in pitching, even though I can't hit worth a lick.

My team was the Dodgers, so at least you get a good pitchers park and pretty stadium :(
 
my suggestion is if you can get it to work enough to get your queue in then send it back . i dont think theres a timetable for the league so you can play your games when it gets back to you took me about a week for me

So I guess we can't set it to auto draft? I'm worried the game will draft players that were free agents. I'll have to see if I can make it to the Live draft.
 
Well, I'm not sure how to handle this. It sucks that your PS3 is likely toast xistence. I'd definitely send it in if it's stilll under warranty. There's no sense risking it going any other route. As m_d_amore said, you could just try to milk it just long enough to get your queue set up, but I think he's underestimating how long he was without his though. I know he expected it to be about a week, but it probably takes 3-4 days to get to them, 4-5 to fix it, and then 3-4 days to get it back. I'd say you'll be without it for about two weeks. With the league's flex scheduling, that might not be a big deal...but you'll be behind right out of the gate.

But, at this point, I have no confidence that the slack asses in this league will even give you anything to worry about. The draft is about 30 hours away, and we still have 6 teams who haven't accepted their invite and also haven't posted in the thread in quite some time. A couple of you, I've heard from, so it's fine, but the rest, I just don't get it.

I know this thing has been far from perfect, but when we get to a point where things have finally settled in and we're moving forward, why screw it up now? For us to even have a chance at having the draft on Tuesday, I have to activate the league tomorrow. If I activate the league on Tuesday, the game will assume we want to do the draft the following Tuesday. This means we've got about 24 hours to get this shit straightened out.

I've heard some rumors about a new patch coming tomorrow, but I haven't been able to verify sources, so it could be BS. It would be nice though if a patch is coming to fix all the draft problems. I know that would make me happy, but without having committed people to play in the league, it's kind of a moot point. Again, I ask...where is everybody?

I want to answer this before I forget. I don't think that's neccessarily the problem. From my understanding, as long as you don't have the free agents queued up, the game shouldn't choose them. If it does, since people have reported that the last 5 rounds get autodrafted no matter what you do, I'd say the draft is completely broken and it doesn't matter either way.

I've confirmed with some guys over at OS that Sony IS working on a patch. But considering this game has numerous problems that spring up in Franchise, RttS, and Online Leagues, nobody knows for sure which problem they're tackling first. Most people believe it to be the lineup problem which makes the CPU use retarded lineups.

That still leaves the stability of our draft up in the air, but if at all possible, we might as well press on forward. If the draft royally fucks up, I say we put this league on hiatus until Sony fixes it, and just do some kind of tournament/short season with real teams. I feel like if we don't have SOME kind of play occurring pretty soon, people are going to just lose interest entirely. What do you guys think?

That sounds fine to me, I wouldn't mind a tournament/short season while we wait for a fix if the draft on Tuesday screws up. Hope it all goes well during the draft though.
 
might be a little later for me to join the league rather then the 8pm cst quote... probly gonna chill at work watching wrestlemania 25 stream while taking advantage of the good bandwith. Yay yahoo IT :)
 
All right, xistence has decided to play it cautious and not risk holding up the league (classy move on his part). That means we have one spot open...again. I've contacted a couple people who have expressed interest, so hopefully it will get filled soon.

Along those same lines, NoNova hasn't logged in since 3/29. When he first signed up and I had trouble getting ahold of him, I told him that he needed to check in on the thread at least once every 1-2 days just to make sure he had a handle on what was going on. Destro, I know he's your friend, and that's cool. But the dude just has no interest in CAG. You can't force a man to be a CAG.

I'll give him till noon tomorrow, but then I've gotta cut him (and scramble my ass to find a last minute replacement). The league has to be activated tomorrow, or we'll be waiting another full week.
 
As I said, hopefully xistence's spot would be filled fast, and it has been. Everybody welcome stewie75 and the Chicago Cubs to the CAG League! Now, if BasketCase1080 accepts his invite after WM25, we'll just be waiting on NoNova...or NoNova's replacement.
 
Great job getting those invites accepted today guys! We went from 10 to 15 players, including one replacement in about 9 hours. The only one left is NoNova. But that issue will be taken care of in another 12 hours. Looking forward to finally getting the league activated and having the draft Tuesday evening. Hope you guys have your queues ready. And remember NO FREE AGENTS!!!
 
what's up everybody, just joined today and got the game today. so im sure ill be stinkin it up big time for the first few games. but if youre up for a game every now and then, feel free to take on me and my cubbies anytime with a friend invite.
 
Don't worry stewie, the games aren't on any set schedule (the game uses flex scheduling). So, technically, you could take a week to practice and learn before jumping into games that count. It'll just be up to you to catch up.

This made me think of something guys. Last year (in my league anyway) we had guys post their pitching rotations and followed them from game to game. But with flex scheduling...we can't really do that can we? I mean...how can you go through a sequential rotation when your games aren't even being played sequentially? With NFL, NBA, and even NHL games, this is no big deal because you generally have the same guys out there each game.

With baseball, you could just use one pitcher the entire season. I don't really like that idea, but is there any way we can get around it? I mean, I guess it's essentially what happens when you just play randoms online. But for a league, it just seems unnatural. I don't know why every time I think about this game, more obstacles just spring up in my head, lol. It's quite unsettling.

Well, we could always post our game by game rotation, like Game 1 Webb, Game 2 Zambrano, Game 3 Harden, etc. Not team specific, but by attaching it the game, it should keep things honest.
 
I thought about that pitching too. I guess I'll only need one amazing starting pitcher and like 4 amazing closers... you guys are goin down now.

That's not a bad idea, but then when you play somebody, you'd have to keep track of which number game they're on. Like "Oh, this is their 13th game, so they should be using their #3 starter." You'd basically have to know their record before you played them. This would work to ensure that each starter gets an equal (or close to) number of starts...but is it feasible? And lastly, do people care enough to do that? I mean, I'd prefer to have some semblance of a rotation, but considering all the problems we've had, if the majority thinks it's stupid, I'll gladly let this one go.

Edit: Wait, I just re-read your post and think maybe I misunderstood. Are you saying tie rotations to the actual schedule itself? So, that way, all the pitching match ups are pre-determined? Hmm...that could actually work better as it would only require you to know who's supposed to be pitching for you in that specific game. Rather than forcing you to keep track of your opponents games.

Haha, yeah, see that's all I was hoping for. Brainstorming always gets one idea rolling into an even better one. I still want to hear what everybody thinks of it though before adopting it into policy. I really would like to enforce rotations though. Otherwise, like stewie said, you could just draft one starter and 11 relievers. This would definitely make it more realistic and fun.

The only question, 5 man rotation?
 
Wow, I'm glad I checked the league website before making any moves here, because NoNova accepted his invite without posting or logging into CAG at all. I'm guessing this means Destro got him to accept the invite (or accepted it for him..) I just hope you've got the best interest of the league at heart man, and not just that you want to play in a league with your buddy. It's going to be tough for him to set up his games if he's not active on CAG.

The game does not track full stats. In fact, it only tracks user stats. And there is no trading, at least as far as I can tell.
 
N8, I told Nova to check the league boards once a day from now, because I told him he is going to need to set up the games and times to play. I think he saw the early drama and just didn't wanna read through it all, because he is new to CAG... but I have definitely let him know how it has to work, it won't be a problem.

I didn't accept the invite for him though, lol. I just text'ed him yesterday telling him to move his ass and accept it.

So like I said, everything should be fine once the draft is complete and the league is running.

All right guys. The league is now active! There's no turning back from here. Once the league is activated, if somebody drops, they can't be replaced (as far as I know). So, let's all try to stay motivated and participate in this league to the fullest.

As for the draft order, if you go into the draft section in the league, you can see the drafting order on the right side of the screen. I thought the game was creating it as people were signing up, but once I activated the league, it shuffled it again, and created a "final order" I guess. Somehow I ended up with the first pick (not sure if this is just a "reward" for being the commissioner, but I can assure you, I had no control over it).

I posted the draft order in the OP now, but the way the game has it set up is there is a specific order, and the following round goes in the reverse of that order. So, I have the 1st and 32nd pick. BasketCase has the 16th and 17th pick. It seems like a reasonably fair system, and should provide pretty good balance. Check out the OP for the full list, so you can strategize exactly how you want to use your picks!

The draft is now OFFICIALLY set for tomorrow, Tuesday, April 7th at 9 PM EST. For those of you who are going to be there live, you should know you'll have 90 seconds to make your pick. Obviously, since I plan on being there, what I did was just arrange my "draft queue" on paper, so I can avoid any potential screw up with the game's queue system. Might be something for you guys to think about. See you guys at the draft!
