MLB 2010 Discussion Thread
Braden's actually been pretty solid, dude. Doesn't walk anybody, starting to get more groundballs, and doesn't give up many HR (obviously helps to pitch in Oakland).
we talking about the same braden that lost 5 decisions after his no hitter and 8 games his team lost that he started? he pitches in a pretty pitcher friendly park in oakland
it happens to almost every team. if a guy has at least decent stuff he can stifle the offense because there is no book on him.

theres that guy in oakland that got a perfect game and adam garlarraga in detriot that basically got one and they both sucked ever since. its baseball.
No, the Yankees are notorious for it. I am not going to look up the #'s but rookie scrub pitchers are just flat out dominating them and always have for the last several years. Some scrub with an 0-9 record just pretty much almost perfect game them. I am sick of seeing them beat up Verlander, Santana and Halladay but me made to look like 5 year olds against some scrub pitcher who will be out of baseball by 2012.

I just can't believe it! What man gets his kicks beating up a old man? A role model? Krod needs to go to anger management before coming back to baseball.
I really hate the mets. I just do now. No excuse of injuries this year. They friggin stink. I just got back from my yearly vacation in VA Beach and met a ton of Met fans there that own shops there. They all had the same consensus as the fans back home. i sold my ticket for tomorrow's philly game. I just cant stand this pathetic baseball where runs come at a whim which gives pitchers hell because even 1 run they lose.....but yet we are plagued by sex assault cases and a over rated angry closer who beats up old people. Just contract this sorry excuse of a ball club because they do not belong in NY. The Mets of yesteryear do but not the Mets of this decade. This organization sucks and i wont ever go to a game again until the wilpons are out. im sick of spending tons of money at a ballpark that was never designed to be Met-like in the first place. IT was fucking dodger like. fuck you wilpons. I hate your fucking guts and i hope you guys eat shit.
The "trade deadline" in baseball confuses me... anyone care to explain? I thought it was only waiver pick-ups at this point but I guess I was wrong.

It's basically waiver trades. Agree to put players on waiver for the other team to pick up. It's a loop hole that kind of makes the trade deadline pointless.

The fun of the Waiver deadline period is the uncertainty, at least from a fans perspective. I'll use the Yankees and Red Sox as an example. If the Yankees claim an awesome player on Waivers, they aren't guaranteed to get said player. That's when someone in a battle with them or a rival in the division, would step in and make a claim, some times with the sole intention to block a player from going to the better team.

This happened a bit last year, with the same two teams. Though it was a bit more strategic. The Red Sox had made the trade for Billy Wagner with the Mets, they sent some minor league pieces and tried to pass Chris Carter through Waivers to make him the other piece going to the Mets. Well, the Yankees blocked the Red Sox from sending him, prior to the end of the World Series, to the Mets. What this did, was force the Red Sox to waste a 40 man roster spot on a player they didn't want on the 40 man. Despite being a Red Sox fan, that is the beauty of the Waiver wire.

Oakland's offense is pretty anemic. Judging a pitcher's performance by wins isn't a good way to evaluate their ability. This is Braden's second straight season with a FIP of about 3.7 (puts him with company like Cain, Hamels, Sabathia, Wandy Rodriguez, Johan Santana)... not sure why you're down on the guy. He's likely never going to be Cliff Lee, but a pitcher who doesn't walk anybody, gets groundballs, and has a killer changeup is an asset.

Exactly. Moves done over the waiver wire have an entirely different nature to them, thus not necessarily making the trade deadline meaningless.

Another walk off win for the Braves, with a Heyward two-out single driving in the winning run.

Unfortunately the Phillies won as well....

We can't stop winning on the same days.

This. HOWEVER, for once, it's not TOO bad if the Phillies win. Honestly, I'd prefer them to lose as I despise them, but they are taking care of the Giants wildcard wise, and while you want to aim for the division (especially when you have the lead), as long as we get in, we can take care of the next step afterwards.

Derek Lee to the Braves is a done deal. Braves give up cash and 3 minor league pitchers.

True.

In any case, Braves just need to keep winning. Really need home field advantage to do anything in playoffs given their great home record and crummy road record.

I lol'd so hard.

For the Braves / Phils, it's almost predictable at this point. If one team has an early game, whatever the first team does, may as well chalk the same for the other team. Although with Kendrick on the mound, it was a loss for the Phils regardless tonight.

Well, that's a little unexpected. I knew he was going to retire this season, but I figured he'd at least due it at the end. Then again, it's not like the Cubbies are going anywhere anytime soon this year.
Lou Pinella is retiring after the Cubs game with the Braves today. 3rd base coach will manage the rest of the season.
Wow that's pretty interesting..... figure he would just wait out the 40 days or so to retire traditionally.

Hope his health isn't the issue.

So who is the NL Manager of the year... Bud Black, Charlie Manuel, Bobby Cox or Dusty Baker? I think my vote would go to Bud Black.

Charlie also gets some consideration considering he was able to keep the Phillies afloat with the ridiculous amount of injuries we have had this season.
Yeah, still kind of lame to call it quits mid season--unless he has health issues or something.
Read this a while ago before I left for work. Forget what it said exactly, but apparently his mother was ill for a while and has taken a turn for the worse so he's retiring earlier for her (and his familiy's) sake.

Jesus, Braves blew a 10-1 lead to loose 12-10 to the Rockies. Just suck on the road.

Interesting enough, Reds also blew a 10-1 lead against the Giants, but came back to win 12-11 (after being down 11-10).

Well, if we're lucky, it goes to 3 games tomorrow night. Braves are off, so getting swept by the Rockies, that can only mean the Phils get swept by the Astros. Right?

RIDICULOUS. At least no matter what it won't be 2.5 tomorrow... Phils play and the Braves have off.

Man losing 3 in a row to the fucking Astros is painful though. Did wildcpac get banned or something?

Looks like he's Temp Banned again. How many times can one guy get temp banned before getting a perma ban?

I went to see an Indians game today. Unfortunately they lost. It's the first time they've lost a game I've attended since the 90s.

You got to see Trevor Cahill, though. That dude is the real deal. He's shut down my Rangers 4 times this season. Thank god he isn't pitching in the upcoming series against us.

Hey Manny Ramirez.............GTFO of L.A.

"You leave town tonight, right now. And when you're gone, you stay gone, or you be gone. You lost all your L.A. privileges"

MANNY BEING MANNY!!!:bomb:

fuck this guy...hes been sitting out the whole season with freaking leg cramps, or something lame like that.

Dodgers put him on waivers today, hopefully they get something back in return for him. Just want him gone already.

This just in, the game got rained out.

Ok, not really, but wouldn't that be something?

He's not as good as his numbers suggest. Gets groundballs and doesn't walk guys, but his .217 BABIP is not going to continue forever. Oakland's great defensively, but as of right now, he's much more Dallas Braden than Brandon Webb.

If he develops a strikeout pitch, though... look out. Might have Roy Halladay 2.0 on our hands.

And the Phillies get swept at home by the Astros.

Nice!

Hopefully the Braves can widen the lead some over the next week. They're back at home we're they've been awesome this year against the Marlins and Mets next two series, while Phillies head to the west coast to play the Padres and Dodgers.

I really think the Phillies will be fine, we are a late season team and have been. I would be VERY surprised if they don't end up winning the division. Everyone in Philly is sitting on the panic button unlike years past, because we know what our team does in September / October. Just gotta suffer through some of the potholes on the way.

Hope you're wrong on that one! Wild card=first round loss for the Braves since the team can't win on the damn road to save their lives!

And I'd love them to get Cox a final division title in his final year. Fitting end for him after winning 14 straight before.
