MLB 2010 Discussion Thread

Matsui and Damon didn't have All Star Caliber Seasons last year?

Hideki hit .274 with 28 HR's and 90 RBI's in 140 games. 130 OPS Plus.
Damon hit .282 with 24 HR's and 82 RBI's with a 126 OPS Plus.

American League Roster had Ichiro, Hamilton and Bay starting. Granderson, Crawford, Cruz, Zobrist, Adam Jones and Hunter.

Damon and Matsui had better seasons offensively than Hamilton, Granderson, Adam Jones and on par with Hunter. So yes, Matsui and Damon were all star caliber last year.

If I were a real Yankees homer, I wouldn't be rooting for the Mets to do well. I wouldn't have sympathy for their shortcomings the past 5 years. I wouldn't be watching games from all over the league.

Gotta love Yankees fans. They win for the first time in 10 years and their elitist fans are back. The Phillies have gone to two straight World Series and won one of them. Why would he be "butt hurt" about losing one?

Its still to early in the season to count anyone out and to say the Yankees improved over last season is a stretch at this point. Vazquez is back to his old self. Johnson and Randy Winn have been useless. The juries still out on Hughes as a starter. Not to mention your team still employs two know steroid users: Arod and Pettitte. Obviously they are a good team but lets wait a little bit before crowning anyone champion

Angels starting pitching looks like its finally starting to pick up. Three awesome starts in a row after the horrible start to the season. Jared Weaver definitely looks like he deserves the #1 spot.

Amen.
Good news for Mets fans. Wfan is reporting that Ike Davis will be called up for Tuesdays game.

Make that tonights game.
i just want them to bring up all the kids. Dillon Gee, Fernando Martinez, Reuben Tejada, Chris Carter..and I want Mejia sent down so he can start pitching as a starter again.

Gee has to be 1000000x better than Maine and Tejeda is going to be way better than Castillo. Happy Ike is up because now we dont have to have the worst 1b platoon in MLB history with Catalanotto and Tatis. I can't wait till they dump those two also.

Because no other team has cheats on them. Right!!!!!!!! Johnson has been useless? Guy was brought in to work the count and get walks. He has hit a ton of line drives but right at the defense. So far he has 14 walks in the first 12 games with an OBP of .410 even though he is hitting .150. Should I mention that he has helped the Yankees knock out a majority of the starting pitchers before the 5th inning so far. Pretty useless I'll tell ya. Randy Winn is pretty useless? Guy was signed for around 2 million to be the 4th/5th outfielder and a defensive replacement/pinch runner. He wasn't brought on to be the Mike Cameron, Jason Bay or Matt Holliday.

Vazquez has had 2 starts and was brought on to be the #4 starter. Oooooo nooo the sky is falling because he has done better than Free Agent signings lick Lackey and Jason Marquis. Did Vazquez get beat up by the Rays? You betcha and you tip your cap to the Rays because they have a top 5 offense. Javy did look 100 times better against the Angels even though he got the loss. I am not going to be too concerned since he got beat by legit teams. All I care is that he pitches 200 innings this year and be an innings eater.

So using deduction, I am a Yankees homer because I called them the best team in baseball after winning the World Series and going 110-50 in their last 160. I am guilty as charged, force me to watch 2 games a day on Mlb.tv around the league and 3 games on the weekend. About time for me to watch Ike Davis debut for the Mets but I am a Yankee homer.

No one has had as many cheaters as the Yankees: Clemens, Pettitte, Giambi, Arod, Knoblauch, Canseco, Sheffield. You are the only one going on about being a Yankee homer so yea....

If I were a RSox fan I would be a little worried. Their catching defense is just bad bad bad. They have a lot of old declining players. Their emphasis on defense hasn't really paid off yet albeit the weather was bad this weekend. They have a lot of guys prone to slumps and/or injuries: Cameron, Drew, Ortiz, Lackey, Scutaro. They have pitchers with a good track record and their bullpen is very good so they are always going to be there.
Congrats to Ike Davis with a single in his first at bat. Pretty decent at bat as he worked a hit after being down 0-2.
\

Yeah he did a nice job of battling back. Also congrats to Soriano who has the uncanny ability of turning triples off the wall into singles and doubles. RUN DUMBASS!! DON'T SIT THERE AND STARE AT THE fuckING BALL!!!!

I thought Ike had all of it in that 6th? inning at bat. Just missed a homerun.

Pagan just crushed a 2 run shot to give the Mets a 3-1 lead. Is the Cubs bullpen this bad?

Yes, yes it is. The Cubs are following their usual script: Get 6-7 solid inning from the starter, score no more than 2 runs, turn it over to the pen late, and blow it!

EDIT: And the floodgates have broken wide open... Looks like the Cubs came to NY just in time to give the Mets some much needed batting practice!

Sounds like a recipe for Pinella getting fired. 6-1 game now. Cubs bullpen gave up more runs in 1 inning than the whole Cards pitching staff gave up in 3 games in 1 weekend.

hey im just happy we can hit off a pitcher haha

really happy about Ike. first hit and get his first RBI. now we need that homer for the kid and we are set.

Uh ooooooooooooooo. According to Will Carroll PED suspension coming up.

Ped suspension incoming.

More on suspension -- has already been through appeals process. This + came in spring training, most likely

The Nationals are above .500 again after another solid pitching performance from their starting pitcher (3 out of the last 4 ain't bad). Who knows how many games they can get above .500 before collapsing?

^^I'll say the Nats hover at or above .500 until mid May and then start the slow descent into nothingness. However, I am hoping that Willingham can finally have a breakout season, or at least make the all-star team.

Don't throw this garbage around either. wildcpac is wildcpac. He's ALWAYS used stupid "logic" to support his arguments. Does no one remember his "Roid Sox" rants and endless shit talking about how 2004 and 2007 don't count because of Ortiz and Manny? He's not a "typical Yankees fan". He's just a jackass. Jackasses come in all shapes and sizes and of all allegiences.

I'm a Yankees fan, and while I'm thrilled with how the team has started the season, it feels like ages since they've had a good start...and that fact alone almost makes me nervous. The fact that wildcpac is talking shit in April contradicts everything the team accomplished last season (when many Red Sox fans were doing the same thing...especially with that 8-0 start against the Yanks), and magnifies how big of a dumbass he truly is. But let's not resort to stereotyping. That's just as ignorant.

I would worry a little too. i think these players are great support players but they are still missing 1-2 huge bats to play Red Sox baseball again. I guess this means a serious push for Adrian Gonzalez at the dead line than.

Wow you are such a kiss ass and brown noser. You are mad because I make sarcastic comments on an internet message board to get a rise out of people? It's not my fault that people take things so seriously and let me play the heel perfectly.

I am Shocked that David Eckstein hit a walkoff homerun for the Padres to beat the Giants.

Joel Piniero is looking like a great pickup so far for the Angels. He has given up only 4 earned runs in 22ish innings against the Yankees, Twins and Tigers.

Wfan is now picking up on the steroid suspension that is supposed to be released soon. Will Carroll and a person from NBCsports.com have confirmed that a player is soon to be suspended for PED. It is not a player from a NY team and the rumor is that it's an outfielder from a playoff team.

A Major League PED suspension is imminent
Tue Apr 20,2010 11:43 AM ETBy Craig Calcaterra
UPDATE: I have learned that the PED suspension is NOT a New York player. WFAN (and other sources) are reporting and/or speculating otherwise. And Craig Carton tells me that I should go to journalism school . . .

10:28 A.M. Baseball Prospectus' Will Carroll tweeted this first yesterday afternoon, and I have since confirmed it with a baseball source: a major league player is going to be suspended for a PED violation, possible as early as this week.

I could not confirm the player's identity, but my source tells me that it's a "semi-big" name, though not a "huge" name. I imagine that, once the name is revealed, we'll have more fun arguing about what being a "semi-big" player truly means than we will wondering why he was not a bigger name despite taking PEDs.

From Will Carroll:

“I hate covering these but for over a month, I’ve been getting whispers that there was a PED suspension being appealed. The process can be an extensive one, involving hearings and testimony, as well as some negotiation. There’s no room to “plead down” on a positive test, so the attack is usually on Christiane Ayotte and her Montreal lab. Yesterday, I learned that a high-ranking baseball executive spoke off the record about the suspension being announced. He said it was a pitcher, but I couldn’t get any solid confirmation of that fact by the time I posted on Twitter. (And yes, I did feel some pressure to get this out, but I also realized that by doing so, I was pretty much guaranteeing that someone else would break the name first.) I feel very confident in my information on this, but still have no idea about the name or the substance (though it’s not an amphetamine.) It’s pretty amazing that in a world where the new iPhone is pictured on the net, that baseball could sneak through the entire multi-week process with no leaks. That speaks well of the process put in place by the OIC and the MLBPA. While I expect the announcement today, baseball moves at its own pace”

Mike Cameron out 4-6 weeks with an abdominal tear. Who takes over in CF now for the Sox? Bill Hall or do they call up JJ Reddick?

The fact that you need to "play the heel" only makes it more pathetic. I'm not a kiss ass. I'm just smart enough to know that celebrating April Championships is dumb as hell, and it's what ignorant fans do. For all you know, Sabathia or A-Rod could go down in their next game, and poof...there goes the season.

I also don't go around tossing insults like "Big Poopi" or "Roid Sox" like I can't comprehend that every team had users. If you don't see how this casts you in a poor light, then I don't know what to tell you. I'm not even saying you're an ignorant fan. But you play up to that image. Why act so surprised when people call you on it?

Go brown nose some more to Roid Sox and Fillies fans. I never celebrated an April Championship for the Yankees. Go back to school and learn how to read. Ooo my god, I called the Red Sox the Roid Sox. I forgot that their fans never once made fun of the Yankees. Never ever ever. I forgot all the gay insults that Jeter and Arod hear at Fenway. I forgot the You did steroid chants at Arod last year. I make a couple of sarcastic comments on a message board and you get your panties in a bunch and sand in your vagina.

Last night I watched the Mets/Cubs game and the Orioles/Marines game. Why? Because I love baseball. Good thing I am a Yankees homer who only cares about my team right? Oooo I am a Yankees homer because I call the team that is coming off the World Series, 9-3 and have won 110 games in their last 160 the best team in baseball.
Go back to school and learn how to read.
Says the person who thinks the Orioles are "mathematically eliminated". Find one person on this site who doesn't think you're a complete tool and I'll retract my statement. Until then, I'll be patiently waiting on Darwinism to do its thing. :)

It was a sarcastic comment based on them starting the season 1-11. I wasn't talking about the magic number you dope. Oooooo noooooo, people on here dont like me. I have friends in real life. I do not need cag butt buddies to feel accepted like you do. It's funny how you think I am pathetic for being healish but you are the one who is getting your panties in a bunch and sand in your vagina over harmless comments made on here. I called the Red Sox the Roid Sox and Ortiz Big Poopi. I can find tens of thousands of Sox fans who call Jeter every form of the term homosexual. You act like I am making fun of Lester for having ball cancer.
Could we stick to talking baseball and not silly personal attacks and pissing matches?
Sure.

Big game for the Rangers in Boston. Both teams are coming off of a poor weekend and looking to rebound. Red Sox need the win a whole lot more than the Rangers do due to being a home game and most of the fans starting the process of giving up on the season. I am basing that off of Red Sox message boards. Biggest problem so far for the Sox is hitting with RISP. Colby Lewis has come out of nowhere to have a pretty good start for the Rangers and Wakefield is slowing down a bit so far this season.

Another good game with the Braves and the Phillies. Kendrick is looking to rebound after his horrible last start and I want to see how the Braves hang with the big boys.

The last interesting game is the Yankees/A's game. A's are off to a hot 9-5 start and are playing the best team to date on their schedule. Javy is going to have to show improvement over his previous starts against the Angels and Rays.

QFT

i am sorry i have to miss this weekends game. I traded my tickets because ill be at Pittsburgh Comic Con for the weekend.

I really wanted to see Jayson Heyward in person. He is tearing the nicker out of the ball.

i hope Big Pelf comes up big again tonight. Thanks to the 20 inning marathon, we have the best ERA in the East. WHOOO for leadiing in something!

edit: no surprise about a player using PEDs but surprising that it was Volquez. You would think he would have learned from the high profile players before him but i guess not. he is hurt and serves him right.
I called the Red Sox the Roid Sox and Ortiz Big Poopi. I can find tens of thousands of Sox fans who call Jeter every form of the term homosexual. You act like I am making fun of Lester for having ball cancer.
And I consider those "fans" to be retards. If that's your way of saying you're no better than they are, then more power to you. Not beating a dead horse any longer though. Act how you want to act.

How does Zambrano walk Pelfrey? Mets lead 2-0 after a Reyes triple. I do not know how Cubs fans do it.

Wakefield pitching to Vmart should be outlawed for Red Sox fans. Rangers have 6 stolen bases in the first 3 innings including 5 in the 3rd inning but only lead 2-1.

Nelson Cruz and Vlad both have 2 steals.

4-1 Rangers now. Wakefield has got to be pissed pitching to VMart. Vmart has a ton of passed balls so far and the Rangers have a ton of stolen bases. I am shocked that Wakefield isn't pitching to Varitek.

8 Stolen Bases for the Rangers in 3 innings. Andrus has 3. 5-1 game now.

Sox should be thanking their lucky stars they didn't extend VMart after his contract runs up this year.

Jeremy Hermida looks pretty decent with some decent pop to RF. 5-2 game now.

9 Stolen Bases for the Rangers as Cruz steals 3rd. Holy ISHHHHHHH.

what a night.

I thought mets had it bad.....the man i feel bad for the cubs.

Here's nothing new. The Rays still can't hit lefties. Look for another perfect game tomorrow from Buerhle. This will kill all momentum from our win streak. Its embarrassing to watch

Mets have won 3 out of 4. Pelfrey looks like a stud to start the season so far. Maybe he is finally turning the corner for you guys. He keeps it up than him and Santana are going to be a scary 1-2 punch. Still need more offense though. Beltran is still months away from coming back and rumored to behind schedule of the All Star break return.

:wall::wall::wall::wall::wall::wall::wall::wall::wall::wall::wall:

Uugh! Another night of good starting pitching, no offense, and a craptastic bullpen. This is really going to be a long season...

The Cubs have to be the best team at getting themselves out of excellent scoring opportunities. They make it look so easy!

Great game going on in Atlanta. Phillies had a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the ninth and Troy Glaus hit a 2 run shot and Heyward hit a solo homerun to tie the game.

Have to give the Red Sox credit. They have come back from being down 6-2 to tie the game. Rangers have had something like 8 walks and 9 stolen bases.

Braves win on a 10th inning Nate McClouth homerun. By far the first big classic game of the regular season. I am going to watch the bottom of the 9th and 10th again once it goes up on MLB.tv. I still cant believe the Phillies blew a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the 9th and Lidge wasn't closing.

McDonald is already an instant hero in beantown. I read that he was in the minor leagues since 1998. He is making the most out of his cup of coffee in The Show.

As much as it pains me to say it WHAT A COMEBACK BY THE RED SOX. McDonald just earned himself a lifetime of free drinks in Boston. Red Sox had no rights to win that game and still found a way. wow.

I am so glad I am not a Rangers fan.

Whats up with the box score for the Red Sox/Rangers game? There are notes by Lowell (the DH going forward...hopefully; I could hit better than Ortiz at this point) about walking for Ortiz and McDonald hitting an HR for Reddick. Both get tossed mid at bat?
