It's interesting to see the gamer rage against Madden Warfare 2011, er, MW3 because "It's just like the old games!" because if IW et al had changed up the gameplay the same people would shriek "It's different! It reminds me of when GTA IV came out and people moaned. I asked them if they were expecting less crime spree action and more orchid growing and perhaps a tax preparation minigame? Pffft.
I played COD4's campaign (awesome) and the MP somewhat (I'm screamingly mediocre and can't put in the time); never finished W@W's campaign (boring and don't like WWII guns) and hardly played MP; beat MW2's campaign (tried to hard to be "shocking" and killing you at level end is lame and wastes your time) and tried a little MP until I realized everyone else had akimbo shotties; and I totally skipped Blops though the bit of the SP I tried on a borrowed copy was so lead-player-by-nose-ring linear as to be annoying though BF3's campaign manages to be even worse.
The point of the recap is that I think a lot of people are seriously burned out on the series. This is the FIFTH year of big COD games and it's natural that it's going to seem old hat. I, OTOH, have hardly played with the intensity of the people griping now, so I suspect I won't be as butthurt as the gripers. I'd rather stick to BF3, but my friend is Xbox only and doesn't have a gaming PC, so if I want to do the co-op shooty-shooty with him, I'm gonna have to buy into the Madden Warfare thing. Seeing that so many people are hating on it, I'm hoping to pick up a used copy cheap soon.
They already did a future Battlefield game, Battlefield 2142. I don't think it did as well as the others, but they could revisit it if enough people want it. The "modern" setting has gotten kind of old.
It did OK, though it only spawned one expansion - Northern Strike (which I was part of the closed beta test) - and wasn't accorded the respect like BF2 was though I played the heck out of it. The way assault and medic classes are combined in BF3 was in BF2142, so I'm finding the A/M role very comfortable. I installed it for grins the other night (hadn't played in ages) and it's shocking how sparse the graphics are compared to the eye socket-fornicating visuals of Frostbite 2.
