MotorStorm: Pacific Rift - 5/13: New Update and Free DLC Announced

Anyone having trouble with the single player campaign?

I'm in the latter half of the stages (rank 6 or so) and I honestly think the AI is just out to get me.

Instead of trying to win the race individually, they instead try to kill me. They often stop in front of me for no reason, pursue me even though I brake to let them pass, or just plain drive me off the road along with themselves. I'm sure it's suppose to ramp up in difficulty as I progress, but the AI is just starting to look cheap.

I can no longer count the times I had to restart/retry.

However, the first MotorStorm had a much steeper difficulty climb to a point it was near impossible to get in the top 3. The key point is to not wreck so much and learn shortcuts.

This is the next game I am buying, first game of 2008, well depends which comes first Killzone 2 or this, who knows.

Well, I've been playing this game a lot. Not because I am in love with it (though I do enjoy it a lot), but because I'm sorely determined to beat the game. The later levels (I'm on rank 8 now) are ridiculous. I am able to run very good runs, the kind with excellent boost usage, optimal paths taken, and little to no crashes. Despite this, the game has rubberband AI. No matter how good I race, the rest of the pack is behind me. If you want to get all the golds in this game, you better expect to restart/retry several times. Even many people on the gamefaqs board attest to this horrible screw you over AI and luck based racing as you approach the latter tickets. Even if I'm at max boost and at top speed, I usually see another vehicle with lower speed and boost pass me up easy.

And personally, most of the music doesn't help me get over this...

I bought it a couple of days ago (Target PM at CC for $36.90). I quite like it, at least early on. I don't think it's as good as Pure, but it's still a lot of fun and looks amazingly good. I always appreciate great track design and this game has some truly stunning ones. I like the variety of the tracks and how the lava and water affect your boost. I liked the geo-deformation used in the first game and it's pretty much the same here. I find it prett disappointing that sometimes very small rocks or trees that you just clip can make you come to a complete stop -- in a physics based game it really sticks out like a sore thumb.

I played for a few hours last night and quickly got a lot better at it...next time we play I shouldn't suck nearly as much! ;)

Is it just me, or are some of the vehicles just downright un-driveable? The ATV doesn't even fucking turn! How do you make a racing game and completely take all of the fun out of riding an ATV?

I don't think I'm going to try to finish the single player on this...I just don't find it very compelling. It's a lot of fun online and exploring the paths through each course is cool but I just don't have the patience to deal with the crap that option.iv is encountering. I'm only on the 4th or 5th race in each element and I'm restarting fairly often...I'm not going to keep playing if that's just going to get worse.

In other news, I know some of you have objections with it but I think this is easily one of the best videogame soundtracks I've listened to in a while. Vastly superior to the first Motorstorm and the recent Burnout games.

Same here, which is sad because I find the game awesome. I feel more compelled by the online because of the levelling system. The thing that bugs me is that there doesn't seem to really be any trophies associated with the SP campaign. I'm almost to Level 7 or whatever its called and I've only really got that one trophy that says 'reach level 3 to unlock ...'. I know the way the trophies are structured its trying to get you to play with all the vehicles/get the most out the game but a couple of trophies for maybe levels 2,4,6 and 8 have killed em? /rant

The inclusion of Leftfield - Phat Planet made my day when I first heard it. Awesome track.

EDIT: Speaking of trophies I just got 3 in one shot. I won my first online race (1), didn't wreck while winning it (2) and ranked up a level (3). Crazy I say.

I have quite a few from the campaign, I am up to 18 total trophies and some you can get in Freeplay easily, like The Money Shot, Freestyle, Survivor. Tophies like race for 5 hours, 250 crashes, and win 5 races with each vehicle will all come easily after playing a bit.

I also break up playing the single player with online. I enjoy the single player but is thoroughly frustrating at times, if i lose a race more than a few times i skip it or come back another day and usually beat it the first try then. I think playing through the the SP helps me find better strategies for certain tracks which help me race online. Ranking up online seems like it will definitely take a long time, once you get to rookie silver unless you finish 1st you bar barley moves.

-Also feel free to anyone who wants to play online to send a friend invite.

I've been finding myself smacking into the 'frame' of the finish line while doing the money shot almost half the time. I swear that I've shot past a CAG member doing it before, but does it actually make you move faster than not blowing up?

I'm not quite sure, but it sure as hell looks cool.

Anyways, I think you'd get better times if you use boost efficiently, as in, never letting it go down to zero and blowing up at max across the finish line.

Single player is so 'hard', I've lost count of how many times I've restarted. And yeah, I too feel like I have to watch out for every single pebble so as to not crash. Usually two crashes or more and I usually have to restart right then and there. At least the game is not exactly a walk in the park considering how easy it is to crash. Sort of adds a little touch of that random factor mixed with driving skill and track knowledge.

From trying the demo of Pure, I'd have to say Motorstorm is slightly better if I were to compare the two regarding gameplay. But in terms of value, I'd give it to Pure (if you can find it at Target for $14.99, I couldn't). Motorstorm has a lot to unlock and various strategy. Pure to me seems like whoever spams their tricks will win it, though I haven't even experienced anything outside the demo (i.e. customizable parts). If Pure had split screen, I'd definitely give more of an effort into finding it.

The first major update for MotorStorm Pacific Rift is currently in the final stages of development and testing. This update contains many improvements and amendments to the game, as well as fixes to several issues reported on the forum, and is scheduled for release in the near future. Details of the first update:

  • Restrictions to the copying of Saved Data have been removed. This will make it possible for Saved Data to be backed up and then restored to the User Account it was created under (whether that’s on the same PLAYSTATION 3 or not).*
  • Changes to the way the game handles data. These changes will help to prevent Saved Data corruption.
  • Visual notification of critical save progress has been added. A ‘MotorStorm Helmet’ icon will be displayed on-screen to warn users that critical data is being saved. This is in addition to the HDD Access light which currently flashes while the game makes a critical save.
  • The glitch which enables a player to exploit the Boost system has been removed. The development team are working to identify which times have been achieved using this glitch; Action will be taken to ensure that the Leaderboards become genuinely competitive again.
  • Time Attack times and Rank information will update correctly for all players. Any pending Time Attack times will begin to filter through systematically and the online Ranks should display correctly once the update is released.
  • Additional fixes and improvements to gameplay. Many thanks for your feedback on these and other issues so far; we are still investigating the other issues that have been brought to our attention.
Should you notice anything about the game that you feel needs to be brought to our attention, please let us know via the VIP.MotorStorm.com forums.
An update is coming soon.

I am loving this game. I put in a little time again yesterday. For right now its getting all my play time on the PS3. Due to a issue with my last PS3 I lost all my saves on LBP so I got to get back to that but this game is such a refreshing racer. I love all the alt root. I have to play lvls again and again to get 1st place and move on so its nice to find yet another route on my 8th time through.

I have not played online with it yet but I will charge my headset tonight and give that a go.

Thanks. Did they address the horrible voice chat?

I'm sure many find it hard to hold a conversation, let alone a full sentence since voice chat drops so often.

I sure hope so, this is the only game I don't hear TMK clear as day in which says a lot considering his connection and mic.

There is a string of new, free DLC coming for the next eight weeks and a new update is out that introduces the new Microbadge feature.
Hope you’re having fun ripping it up in the jungle on Pacific Rift because starting this Thursday, May 14th, we’ll be sending a downloadable vehicle livery pack your way every week for the next eight weeks exclusively via PlayStation Store. Each pack features new paint jobs for three vehicles, and the full set will give MotorStorm: Pacific Rift players a cutting-edge new look for every single vehicle class in the game: Mudpluggers, Quad Bikes, Monster Trucks, Rally Cars and more. Each new livery has been designed by one of Evolution’s top studio artists and the result is a collection of some of the craziest and out-there vehicle sprays ever seen in a racing game!

And to top it off, all these liveries are FREE!

Additionally, Game Update #2 was just released, and provides a number of useful fixes and updates for MotorStorm Pacific Rift. These include:

  • Sugar Rush short-cut removed – The short-cut to the left of the “keep right” arrows going into the sugar field was not intentionally included and has been removed
  • Sugar Rush respawn point fixed – Crashing at a certain point on the track no longer respawns the vehicle in a generous position
  • Inclusion of Microbadges
Actually, wanted to focus on these new Microbadges as these are very cool ways of giving each player a distinct identity when online in MotorStorm Pacific Rift.

Microbadges are in-game displayable ‘medals’ which let you flaunt your proudest personal accomplishments and your off-road racing prowess to every other racer online.

Microbadges go beyond the usual Trophies that MotorStorm Pacific Rift already awards; the idea is that they should be dedicated to things you’d want other players to know about while you’re racing online. Here are some examples:

  • Gold Festival – Completed Pacific Rift Festival with all Gold medals
  • Immortal – Win an Online Ranked race without wrecking
  • Flame and Fortune – 20 Boost explosion wins
  • Time Attack Master – Record an impressive Time Attack time on any Leaderboard
  • Supreme Victor – Win any Online or Offline race by a margin of 15 seconds
Microbadges are displayed beneath each Online ID, and players can display up to three badges from the get-go. Three more badge slots (there are six slots total) can be earned by working up the online ranks, and players can unlock 40 microbadges total. Players can choose which badges to show off and highlight what they’ve achieved in the game. Microbadges will also provide retroactive credit, so if you’ve already put in the hours, you’ll be reaping the rewards.
