So I was hanging out with my buddy yesterday... not really doing much of anything, when it happened. I picked her up from her house and decided to get some food. She wasn't hungry. I go inside Popeye's and come out about 10 minutes later with a box of popcorn chicken and fries... mmm.
When I get to the car I see her with a needle in her hand and not much else going on. Her eyes are rolled back in her head and she's not breathing. I start to freak out.. I've never had this happen before.
Now, let me explain one thing. I knew this girl had had problems with heroin but she had been honest with me about her use.. we used to use together a lot (I've been clean for a few weeks now). She told me she had been clean for about a week at that point but was interested in getting high again... so, she did.
I start to spray her with cold water and slap her around a little bit, but to no avail. So I sit there for a minute and think. She could die... and it would be my fault. I decide to fly to the hospital... and that's exactly what I did. I turned on my emergency blinkers and took off... hitting about 90mph in a 40mph zone. This was probably the most exhilerating, complicated driving I've ever done. I hit the highway and went about 110mph on the shoulder until I got to the hospital's exit. I flew through about 10 red lights and while it felt like about an hour, the trip took less than 10 minutes. I'm sure I pissed a lot of people off and was pretty surprised I didn't get stopped by any cops, considering that this was a major road with a police station on it. Anyway, I pull up to the ER and run inside.. I look around and everything feels surreal, like a dream. I just yell "Can someone help me out? She overdosed!". At that moment, about 5 paramedics rush to my car and I help them get her out.
I spent 9 hours at the hospital. Luckily, she had a strong pulse coming in and surprisingly didn't need anything to wake up. However, when she did, she thought she was dead and started saying things like "Am I dead? Why am I not dead?". Some lady came out and told me they put her on suicide watch and asked me if I thought she wanted to hurt herself. I told her no.. So basically I was with her while she cried and had tests done and was in a slightly embarassing lack-of-real-clothes situation. Eventually we got out.. went to my house.. and I drove her back in the morning.
It was wild.
