Need Anime Suggestion for My Wife
I totally forgot...

A very under rated, unappreciated, often hated title

BLUE SEED

In my opinion, one of the better anime of the mid 90's, plus it's only 26 episodes, just the right length for an anime.

I know a lot of "non anime fans" that LOVE Blue Seed, and I adore it myself, give it a chance, the complete series can be found for less than $40...good hand drawn stuff.
I bought the boxed set awhile ago and it is VERY similar to Inuyasha... or the other way around.

Oh.

Fooly Cooly aka FLCL.

It weird and won't make sense, at first, but it's awesome. It seems like some way out sci-fi story when in fact it's pretty much a coming of age story.

Inuyasha wishes it were Blue Seed....seeing how Inuyasha doesn't even really have an ending and it's 170 episodes long about..

It does have lots of the same Japanese mythology though, I love the characters in BS and hated Inuyasha though.

I'm a pretty casual watcher of anime. I fifth (or whatever number we're on) the recommendation for Fruits Basket. Not one of my favorites of all time or anything, but certainly a decent watch and not over the top. One of my personal favorites is Magic User's Club. I don't think it'd be considered over the top, but I'm not sure. Guu is another favorite (obviously), but I think that one is definitely over the top :) I've greatly enjoyed some of the mainstream animes, like Naruto and One Piece. All my friends keep telling me to watch Cowboy Bebop.

I personally couldn't stand Chobits. I really, really don't dig guy-meets-almost-perfect-girl-in-robot stories.
Edited to add: And add me to the list of people who liked Howl's Moving Castle. I even enjoyed it dubbed! (mmm... Christian Bale.)

I left out my favorite anime ever, and though I'm not sure it fits in with all the others, I'll include it anyway.

Gokujou Seitokai.

I think someone mentioned it.............. 12 KINGDOMS

OMFG that series was phenomenal, and I guarantee women will love it.

LAIN was also wonderful, and any Miyzaki flick is usually golden. Nausicaa is my personal fav,... but his others are masterful as well.

Definitely don't put in something that is obviously not appealing to her. I tried to watch FLCL with my ex,... and she just didn't care for it, where I find it to be one of my absolute fav's, after RahXephon and 12 Kindoms.

Fushigi Yugi is a definite chick flick, that you'll enjoy as well, but it's pretty expensive. Cost me nearly $400 bucks back in the day.
Now and There, Here and Then..(think thats it,,,too lazy to look).. was also an emotional ride.... but kind of for emo guys I'd think :)

If she's a conservative, go with the less zany stuff... as it'll just confuse her, and push her farther away from accepting it.

Good luck, and Happy Holidays!@

:)

Here's what you're going to do.

You're going to get Cowboy Bebop, and you're going to tell these other Japanese-titled animes to piss off.

Then you're going to be very happy and your wife will like it.

See, the great thing about this is that if she doesn't like it, that is a very good barometer for thinking "Hey, divorce might not be so bad."

Ok, so I'm joking. Death might not be so bad in that case. For her. Or your dvd player. Or just your tv.

Look if someone doesn't like Cowboy Bebop, they are a monster in disguise, meaning they probably have gold pieces of them, and you get to upgrade your agility and charisma after you deftly dispatch them, and possibly learn a new technique.

I'm only trying to help you here.

In all seriousness, I was never a fan of a lot of the animes most people are suggesting. I just know that Cowboy Bebop kicks all dimensions of ass. There's a parallel universe where some poor being is in constant pain because Cowboy Bebop is giving it a swift roundhouse to the posterior about 60,000 times a second.

So I guess you can look those others up, but I tell you, there is no reason.

 You can't argue with that, and I totally agree not liking Bebop means you have no soul...

Still, I'll throw in a suggestion that I don't think anyone else mentioned. Crest of the Stars. Some like it, some don't, but I enjoyed it. It's kind of a space opera/romance series. Plus it was a girl who intorduced me to the series, so there's at least a little prior evidence that a girl likes it. Plus it's a mere $15 at Best Buy and it you all enjoyed the first installment the next two (called Banner of the Stars instead) run the same price, so in all it's cheaper than most anime if you go with the DVDs.

Also, I can't believe what looks like only one person mentioned Azumanga Daioh, it's pretty funny and tuned to the female side a little more. I'm not even real big on anime comedies and I liked it.

When I first introduced my wife to anime I also used the Cowboy Bebop barometer, then Irresponsible Captain Tylor (she loved Yamamoto's theme song).
Chobits, Azumanga Daioh, and Love Hina are her more recent favorites.

A lot of great suggestions! I will watch a few episodes of some of them and get a feel for it. I'm sure there is something she will like in there. Thanks, and keep it coming...

Heres some links to check out Beck and Sayuki.

Definitely try out stuff like Beck, Azumanga Daioh, and Kaleido Star. Yakitate Japan! and Planetes are other excellent shows you should check out.

To the OP, are you requesting offcial North American releases or fansubs? I have seen quite a few recommendations in this topic that aren't available on DVD.

I'll throw out a recommendation I haven't seen posted yet (forgive me if I missed it, I was skimming  ) :

Cardcaptor Sakura. Now granted, it can be pretty cute at times (it *is* Clamp, after all) but there is some excellent character development here and it's just an overall fun series. My wife and I both loved this one. Highly recommended.

And all the praise for FullMetal Alchemist has me intrigued. I'll admit to writing off a lot of the stuff that seems to get mainstream over here, and probably unfairly so.

Why?
Why?
Well, by mainstream I mean the stuff that hits Saturday morning TV. Most of it just seems like bottom-rung stuff from first glance. Of course, that may be in large part to the crappy localization job that these series get. I'm talking about stuff like Yu-Gi-Oh, Digimon, etc. After seeing a few episodes of shows like that, I guess I just kinda assume the worst for anything else that shows up on Fox (or whatever channel).

Oh.

Well Full Metal Alchemist airs on adult swim at nights. It is a very intelligent and mature show for the most part.

Hehe, I do joke with my sister about Yu-Gi-Oh though. She keeps telling me how cool it is and I tell her that all the action in the show is the dialogue about what awesome card someone is about to play. Then someone comes up with some wacky strategy that baffles the other duelist then they counter with an equally baffling move.

Perosonally the Art in Bubble Gum Crisis is non above the best only when compared to GenoCyber and Cleoparta DC. All this new recent Anime is computer edited unlike vonderful Cell Animation.

Dominon is really nice too bad it only had four or five episodes episodes and then they decided to redo it in New Dominion Tank Police which is more Coffe Stained Butch.

Digi Charrat is a long Runnering series in realtions to Pia Carrat. I like the Animation and jokes. They have four or five diffrent series. The later series is a kiddie time adventure which is meh boring at times

I just love the art about Viewtiful Joe.

Well, I do put weight behind people's anime recommendations around here, so I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for a deal on FMA. I have plenty to watch in the meantime, and I'm sure it'll go on sale sooner or later. Thanks! :)
