I'm sorry, but this is ridiculous. I've read some of the stuff and this is just out of control. This is what mods are for and, if I was one, I would have deleted any post with personal info and, if that did not work, then the whole topic. You can't just go around posting peoples address, phone number and family photos for everyone to see, it's dangerous. Just as we don't cut off peoples hands for stealing, giving out people ssn can't be allowed either as it's extremely excessive punishment. The guy scammed 25 bucks out of someone and sent used, but working, parts instead of new. For that they give out the guys ssn (which can lead to identity theft and many other things) and put him AND his family at risk by all the other info they give out? Someone should stop this, it's way out of control. I've been scammed out of money myself, but I'd never agree to taking it this far.
It seems some people have some sanity over there (a few particularly direct and vocal denouncements of how things have unfolded), but the mob mentality is still dominant and increasingly dangerous. There are plenty of sick people out there anyway, you have no idea how far some nutcase could take it. And, on page 47, he's already been called with a death threat.
A similar thing happened years ago according to a poster on page 60. I looked it up and he's right. Someone scammed a guy out of money and it spiralled out of control, including the posting of his address online and multiple threats against him. In the end, the kid was sent a bomb in a package and was killed upon opening it. His mother was in serious condition at the time the article was written, I'm not sure if she recovered or if there was any long term damage. You can read it here:
http://www.timeswrsw.com/archive/1998/N0321980.HTM, or the wired online one (linked from the pirates site) here
http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/6.12/murder.html, but the wired one is very sketchy and poorly done.
At this point I have more sympathy for the scammer than the one who was scammed. One lost 25 bucks, the other kid has to deal with death threats and having all his families info posted for any nutcase to do whatever he wants with it. I hope my fears are unfounded, but I have some concern that this won't end well.
I don't like the rampant bigotry either, which someone mentioned here.
I agree somewhat. The scammer was dealt with and the the guy got his money back. Some of that is going too damn far though. For one thing, the guy posting his SSN could be held liable if someone would steal the number. I would think that even distributing somoene else's SSN would be illegal.
The scammer is a huge dick, but people got carried away with some of that crap.
