New PS3 TV Ad Campaign

IGN gave Folklore a 9.0, and the cover alone catches the eye of non-RPG gamers.

I'm a big fan of these commercials, they make me want to buy a PS3 all over again. I can't wait to see the media frenzy they'll have for Killzone though, that seems to be their big game. Not that I think it'll be a really good game, just appealing to the masses.

Yeah, cause they know Warhawk is a better game than Lair. And Folklore isn't a standard JRPG, but I can see why the US marketing guys wouldn't want to push it.

Ok, so SCEA probably feels like the card game from Japan wouldn't do well over here either hence the lack of holiday hype. Seems like Hasbro/WotC will make more money on boosters and decks at this point as that seems harder to find atm. Oh well, Sony's loss...again.

Edit: added Folklore thoughts.

I have seen the commercial a few times tonight. Pretty neat. I hate the song though. It works for the commercial though.

I find it strange that they aren't pushing Folklore, just to boost the sales a bit. I played the demo and would like to buy the game when I have more time. It seems like a great game and could appeal to many RPG players and newbies as well. I like the the SIXAXIS controls to catch the souls or whatever.

Anyway, I bet they are going to make more like this. It is catchy. The animation is awesome.

Yes, apologies. Back OT, the commercials are very good, better than the previous round for sure.

Any commercial that suddenly perks my interest in Uncharted must be good. :)
I swear, I think Saliva must be strictly in the business of being contracted for trailer/ad/Sportscenter highlight reels background music. What a terrible, terrible band.
I couldn't agree more...Saliva's like the lowest rung on the mall-metal ladder. Apparently Nickleback and Godsmack were too busy to contribute. Way to pander to the meathead masses, Sony.

Other than that, however, that ad certainly made an impact on me: it ended with me wanting to play Uncharted as well as kind of curious about Home. Just wish that $399 unit was backwards compatible.

 Indeed. Who wants to advertise to the broadest base possible? I'm no Saliva fan, but we're not going to see obscure band #479 instead, simply to appeal to music snobs. Besides, SneakyPenguin aleady owns a PS3. ;)

Find yourself a 20GB. Uncharted demo's coming this Thursday.

I get that side of it, of course. Apple seems to get a lot of mileage out of using "indie band of the moment" in their commercials, though. I don't know for a fact, but I suspect that Saliva is on Sony Records...which doesn't exactly inspire indie credibility. Clearly, I'm expecting too much here!

As a consumer, regardless of my objection to the musical choice, it made me want to spend money on their product. Mission accomplished.

The 20GB units are backwards compatible? Sorry if that's common knowledge, but I haven't really done my homework here. Are they difficult to find?

Yes and, unfortunately, yes. Try the GS store locator, you may find one in your area. They're $375 new, I think, and qualify for the 5 free Blu-Ray movie promotion. They're also hardware BC, so that's a definite plus. The biggest problems with them are (1) a lack of card readers (not a big deal to some, I suppose), and (2) they do not, I believe, offer wi-fi. Best deal on the PS3 going, though, IMO, short of buying a 60GB new somewhere on the cheap (not bloody likely, though).

Those do not come cheap (unless you get lucky liked dallow and get one during a Fry's sale).

New campaign in Japan too:

I wish more would play Folklore since the game rocks, but it's still mostly a niche game anyway I look at it.
This commercial is all over the fuckin' place, man.

Christ a'mighty, TMK, do you have ANY idea how many people aren't buying a PS3 strictly as a result of your blathering zealousness? Enjoy your system, dude...but chill the hell out, alright? You and Thomas96 do more disservice to the PS3 than missing BC, as far as I'm concerned.
All I do is point out facts.. why does that bother you. We all here to chat and point out our opinions.. who here is so stupid to not buy a PS3, or be detered just because either myself or TMK pointed out something regarding the PS3. What is it that I said you don't like?

I saw the ad numerous times during Family Guy (Family Guy was horrible, by the way).

I really liked the ads. I thought they did an excellent job of giving the viewer an idea of everything the console could do and making it interesting/exciting.

I also liked the music - I thought it fit well with the ad.

Good for them.

Yeah, the commercial wasn't bad, but didn't show too many games. Since they used Saliva, i bet ther fans are "cool, ps3 is teh uber best. gonna buy now". I kidd fans.

WIll this commercial help motivate people to buy the PS3...probably not. But ti should help with a few sales.

Also, why is the "motion engine" so important? SO you can play PS2 games? If the engine played PS1 games too, that would be great, but ti dosen't. So no big loss there.

At the moment, there's no full PS2 emulator not requiring the GS and EE (best there is currently is no EE, but the GS is still needed). Until there's a PS2 emulator that can run most every game without both components, the 40GB will not play PS2 games.
The ad is pretty sweet. However, PS3 still has a lack of quality games this holiday season.

\
No it doesn't. Has just as many as the 360 if not more.

I love how people say that PS3 has no games coming out, when in reality it has just as much as the almighty 360. By my account it's pretty even, there's only one big name exclusive until the end of the year (Uncharted / Mass Effect), and everything else is mainly on both.

Plus what has the 360 put out besides Halo 3 lately? Viva Pinata? Beautiful Katamari? OK, I'll just play some Ratchet and Clank, Warhawk, and Heavenly Sword then, have fun.

Uncharted is all I need.

Yep, great ads. What's the current PS3 motto? (Aka 360 has "jump in" )?

They need a good one like with the PS2. "Live in your world play in ours" is the best one so far for any system, they should re-use that.

Play beyond. I actually like "play beyond"

Heh, that's right I completely for got about it

It's not bad. Better than "Jump In" at least. What's the Wii one?
Only 3 days until the demo ;)
I know... 3 days till Uncharted Demo and 9 till Asasssins Creed... My life is going to be complete soon.

well orange box, and ratchet make two... oh yeah and CoD4, that's three... come on, I know you didn't mean to say lack of "quality" games...

I still think Uncharted has the chance to become GOTY.

I mean, I know it wont, because thats for Halo. But critics choice I think it will be pretty high up there.

Game of the Year?!

I'm more nervious about the media's reception of the game, than I am about the game itself. I just wonder what unforseen minute detail will someone use to "make it a 7.5 game" (i.e. Ratchet). This game could really make or break Sony's holiday season.. wt

I liked the ad as well. It is everything that an commercial that promotes a console should be.

1). It shows actual game footage
2). It shows what the console can do
3). It is flashy and attention grabbing
4). It makes sense

This is what Sony should have done to promote the PS3 last year.

I disliked the ad myself, it was missing ONE thing which would've made me go WOW. Well, two things actually:

1. Playstation 3, now $299.99
2. Comes with Dual Shock 3 and full BC.

Note, I said the commercial would've made me go WOW, but it still wouldn't have made me say 'I gotta have one NOWWWWW'.

I want it to blow me and make a grilled cheese, personally. I'll buy one when it does that.

EDIT: Alternately, why don't you simply save a sentence or two consisting of "WAAAAHHHHHH! PS3 ISN'T $14 YET! I'LL BUY ONE THEN!" and copy and paste it in every PS3 thread between now and 2012. You'll probably save a week's worth of effort every year.

Grilled cheese? But.....but......but......but......the Playstation 3 is supposed to be like fine dining, isn't it? It's supposed to be like filet mignon, which is out of the reach of most normal gamers as well.

And, who says I'm only gonna post ONCE weekly about the PS3 still being too overpriced? I like to rant.....in case you've never seen anything else I've posted on here.

Mind you, the PS3 does seem to not suffer from the PS2's woes from last gen(scratching discs, DREs) and the 360's problems this gen(scratching discs, red ringing), so if for nothing it seems reliable. But, reliability can only go so far, without games that someone like myself will play. I could care less about FPS's, online only crap and anything by Capcom really, so there seems to be nothing for me to wanna go out n splurge on, yet.

Still though, if I had the bling to splurge, I probably would own a PS3 by now, but only a 20gb or 60 gb model, since I might actually use the PS3 for BC or want to.

Isnt that what your moms for?

SORRY! Couldnt resist. Yea its annoying people complaing about the price. Agreed.

I didn't realize how much air time this commericail is getting till today. Have seen it at least 3 time on tv and on 2 websites.
And, who says I'm only gonna post ONCE weekly about the PS3 still being too overpriced?
I said a week's worth of effort - meaning if you just C&P a blanket rerun statement about the PS3's price instead of typing the same thing fresh every time, you'll have saved a week's worth of typing - 172 hours averaged out over 52 weeks accounts to more than once a month, darlin'.

I like to rant.....in case you've never seen anything else I've posted on here.

Rant? You, dear sir, are a one man echo chamber.

Why thank you, I think. I'm sure I will get one and keep my PS2 when I do, since by then it may be a bare barebones system that just plays PS3 games and does nothing else. Of course, with how bad I am at saving $$$, it may be 2012 before I get one also.

It's definitely a reliable piece of hardware, since we're at the year mark and no signs of breakdowns or read errors, so if Sony can keep up the good work on QC and keep the price coming down, I may bite before next years end/

I'll admit, since Sony has switched gears on their advertising blitz, I've been more intrigued by the system and I have a feeling that once the bigger games(DMC 4, MGS 4, GT5, GTA IV) are closer to release, they will see more units going out the door at a faster rate.

However, one thing that still kind of irks me is why they aren't trying to hype the shit out of the big sequels, even with many of them pushed back till next year. Don't get me wrong, I know that would build hype that would die down over the months, but it would get the games out there and on peoples minds LONG before they're ready to be released.

I DO like the new commercials though, which is a switch from the horrid 'white room' ones, those were confusing for the ordinary consumers. Like, for example, wtf does a crying baby doll have to do with a game system? Sure, it could be crying because of the immense beauty it sees the PS3 can produce, but those abstract artist type commercials are better off buried.

If they can get some ads including those big name games previously mentioned and even include a teaser of FFXIII & Versus, that would be nice to watch :p

I've actually never played a Final Fantasy game before...are all of the sci-fi looking monsters and stuff from FF13?

I may have to give that a whirl, if so.
But really, WHY they chose to remove the full BC versus other features that maybe everyone wasn't using(WiFi, memory card ports) is beyond me, but this generation I'm struggling to understand what both Sony AND MS are trying to do.

Also though, if the BR diodes are that cheap now, what were they when the PS3 launched last year? Another thing is, I don't really care about multi discs, switching them means nothing to me, it actually gets me off my lazy ass to switch them.
As for the system not getting cheaper than $200-300, I just have to say to look at Sony's prior two gens for an inkling of what is in store in years to come for the price of the PS3. Hell, they're either barely at a year after release or close and they've already shaved $200 off the price, albeit at the expense of some USEFUL components.

So, to say its NEVER gonna drop below a certain pricepoint is foolish, considering Sony and every console manufacturers history of lowering the price once the tech becomes cheap enough to warrant it.
Welcome to the 21st century. The PS3 (hell even the Wii if you want to break it down) isn't for cheap people like yourself. It's considered cutting edge entertainment. The PS3 isn't a kid toy. It's of course going to cost a premium. Sure the majority may not have it (the country is to large, same goes for the world), but WiFi is important and used by many, and card readers area nice bonus. Ditto for Blu-Ray (more and more are buying HDTV's).

The stuff for you are dead systems. Buy them cheap, play all the old games. Obviously from multiple posts about everything everywhere cutting edge isn't your suit. So just stop bitching about prices because you don't like that new technology costs more money than you want to spend. It's technology, it will always be this way. Stuff only becomes cheap when it gets older and starts to become or is obsolete. End of story, that will never change.

Hell systems and games in general are cheaper now than they were about 15 years ago. Due to inflation and technology costs, the same $300-400 for a system and $60 per game is actually less money now figuratively.

And honestly coming from someone who wishes he could afford better stuff than he has (who doesn't want all the brand new cool stuff you see), pricing complaints are generally just because a person can't afford it. Basically, if you can afford something that interests you, you will buy it (deals be damned, eventually that would be thrown out the window), if you can't you won't (and some will bitch). If you can't justify a PS3 (and especially some of the other things to take full advantage of it, a new HDTV, etc), then don't bitch about the price like Sony is charging some unfair premium.

I'm just sick of people all the time bitching about prices of things, if you can't afford it you won't buy it until you can, and if it's close and you can't justify it, then in a sense you really can't afford it. It's just annoying, there's a hell of a lot of things as a 21 year old in college that I can't afford, but running around just bitching about prices does nothing, proves no point, serves no point, and just annoys those who are around to hear the said bitching.

/end rant

love the commercials by the way, by far the best game system commercials i've seen in a long time
