New Super Mario Bros -- Out Now!

Wow... you guys really need to dig out your NES and play it again. Those games could easiliy be beaten in under ten hours. I'd say this is mostly a "I totally remember Mario being better than this when I played it at the age of ten" complex.

Because Mario was alot better then this. I mean, I know alot of people love the new powerup's, but the koopa shell, mini mushroom, and giant mushroom were all worthless... I don't think there is ever a time when you needed the blue shell, and it really has no use.

The underwater levels weren't too great, the bosses were WAY too easy, the new enemies were kind of weird, and the levels just didn't feel as well designed as other Mario games. I mean, I really enjoyed the game, but even my girlfriend, who hasn't played very many games, was able to plow right through it. As other posters have wrote, it dosen't feel innovative at all... it's almost like Nintendo just phoned this game in. I guess people are so upset because they know Nintendo has the potential for so much more, which is how I feel.

I enjoyed Super Princess Peach alot more, to be honest, which is funny because I thought it would be the other way around. SPP just seemed to have more of that Mario feel, in level design, enemies, and general feel.

New Super Mario Bros is still a decent game, but its far from the second coming of Mario many people made it out to be.

It's not really the length that gets to me, its just the fact that I don't see this having much replay value long term, while I feel SMB 3 and SMW have.

I do agree, the bosses were way too easy. I mean, 2 hits and they are dead? Right when i'm getting into the battle, and figuring out their patterns, the fight is over.

As for the powerups, for the most part they are worthless, and the fireflower is way too powerful, but you need the new powerup's to gain access to hidden areas and coins.

There also should have been a more wider selection then the 2 mushroom houses.

Mario 1: You don't even have to interact with Bowser, just jump over him and onto the flag to beat the boss.

Mario 3: I think the Koopa Kids battles were similar to this game where you just had to jump on them a few times. Though I know they did a bit more than Bowser Jr. to make that more difficult.

Don't get me wrong, I think SMB3 was probably a better overall game than this (I didn't play much of Yoshi's Island so SMB3 has always had my pick for "Best Platformer", but it's hardly as if this game is excessively worse/easier/etc than the original 2D Marios.
Not much happens, after you've spent them all it says "All Spent." That's about it. There are 5 different backgrounds you can get after beating the game (I like the 5th one the best) and you get 3 stars next to your file name.

The cannons are just the warp points for this game. They let you warp to the different worlds.
thanks.

I think Nintendo was trying to make this the Super Mario Bros. of the new generation and please old fans. I think they've done a good job...

I finished Super Mario World on the GBA a few months, which NSMB can't compare to. And lets face it, we're never going to get another SMB3 or SMW because those two games were the climax of 2D platforming.

I'm just glad we got another taste of 2D Mario (which could be our last) and that Nintendo didn't make some crappy game which would ride just on the nostalgia alone.

I don't see this as being that much worse than the others either. I enjoyed Yoshi's Island and Mario 3 more, but this game is still great. It's just a small step below those two in terms of enjoyment for me, but not because of any big flaws.

I'm got all star coins through World 6. Almost there.

Super Paper Mario.

One thing I would've loved, however, would be a secret world, possibly unlocked upon 100% or completion of just completion of World 8, that was like a retro world. All redone in new graphics and whatnot, but levels from the old Mario games that people would recognize.

I hope Nintendo makes another one of these. I think it's a great game, but it could use some refining.

as long as innovation and creativity exists you can ALWAYS outdo perfection.

when you play this game, there's just so much potential that coulda been that just wasnt there.

honestly this is the first time in a while I felt quite strong about a game,

Im most likely gonna consolidate all my thoughts into something more legible,

then put it as review on gamefaqs.

it's just rite now, I havent even beaten the game yet. so u gotta wait a bit.

you should try out Yoshi's Island. it really blows the mario games out of the water.

Not to mention the fireflower pwns them right quick.

Despite the fact that this game's really easy (I hate 30+ lives on W1) I'm thoroughly enjoying it, moslty due to the fact that it's a tribute to the style of all the Mario games I grew up with as a kid. I was dissapointed at the lack of Yoshi and the Feather from SM:W, though. The minigames are also really fun, but several are fairly frustrating, like that one where you bet on Luigi's cards.. fucking green cheater.

QFT. That and Zelda: LtP are my favourite SNES games ever.

I play SMB3 at least once a week (All-Stars version) and I know the level design perfectly. It one of the only reasons why I break out my SNES these days. The level design in all these old 2D Mario games is so much better, but the boss fights are as easy if not harder in NSMB. I think the level design in NSMB is bad and that is the reason I do not like it as much mostly. It just feels so bland. Sure there are some new elemnets (like the switches, the balls, the rope, and the mountains), but overall I think it is not fresh enough nor as interesting. NSMB isn't a bad game, but it certainly isn't VERY good either.

QFT. I also agree with the above poster who commented that most of the people bitching about this game probably haven't played SMB3/SMW since they were ten. After beating NSMB, I booted up my NES and SNES and played SMB3 and SMW today, for the first time in years...and um...they're really not much harder than NSMB (imo, SMW is about the same). Initially I viewed NSMB as really easy, but then I realized that SMB3 and SMW were only hard to me before because I was young, and sucked at video games.

As for the level design, some of the levels are bland, but some are just awesome. Loved most of World 7, and World 8's level design was great, and, imo, VERY challenging.

I will concede that the new powerups suck (except for the mega mushroom - not necissary, but so...much...fun), and there's an overabundance of lives, especially if you exploit the 99 lives on level 2-4 trick like I did (must have slipped by their beta testers).

Still. It's a great mario game.

And they will be making more, judging by how well this game is selling. My local Circuit City sold out of the game in one day, and I'm sure EB/Gamestop/everywhere else are roughly the same. Can't wait for the numbers.

Plus, now we have Super Paper Mario and Yoshi's Island 2 to look forward to :D :bouncy:

I pretty much agree, but we're at the point when we're going to have to start taking what we can get. 2D platformers are going the way of the Adventure Game genre. I'm giving it points for the decade+ wait alone.

Wow, I just wasted 2 fookin hours of my life playing Luigi poker. I kept thinking I would get something for getting X number of wins, or for getting 1000 coins, or my last hope to at least get a high score. But this game doesn't end.

I'm EXTREMELY dissapointed in NSMB. Is it a great game? Yes, definitely, it's an above average game. Is it a great Super Mario game? No, it's short, easy, generic, uninspired, and lifeless. I sort of knew this was going to be a lacklust game when I realized they actually were calling the game "New Super Mario Bros."

I'm a huge Mario fan, especially of SMB3, and SMW.. this game falls waaaay short of those amazing classics.
Super Paper Mario.
I said could!

But, you got me there... that's the second time I forgot about that game. I keep thinking of it as the next Paper Mario (seeing as how it looks the same).
