New Super Mario Bros -- Out Now!

He means that if you got a mushroom in mid-air, after the pause you could jump up again from that spot in the air.

Great game. I'm on 8-7 right now....agh, my Mario skills have died!

I figure I'll make a quick list of Pros and Cons. Let me know which ones you agree/disagree with.

Pros:
Great Classic feel
Great control
AWESOME graphics!
great level design
great little touches (i.e., the enemies will 'dance' to the music on stages, jumping or switching directions on emphasized boops and bops, and the fireworks at the end of the stage)
Good ramp up of difficulty!

Cons:
Repetitive Music
Koopa shell sucks. There, I said it.
Mini mario is a stupid power too. When you get hit while mini mario, you should revert back to normal mario.
Mega Mushroom isn't used enough.
No flying abilities (cloud doesn't count)
You can't save whenever you want - this is especially painful in the 8th world. I don't have enough coins to 'buy' a save, and have to beat 4 (or is it 5?) levels in a row to get to the next save...with 5 lives...are you kidding me?
Minigames are the same as SM64DS
New enemies are kind of lame
Bosses are too easy

Totally loving the game though. Can't say I haven't cursed at my DS a few times though.

Gotta disagree with this con for a few reasons,

1) If you don't have enough coins to "buy" a save, you must be like, actively avoiding them. 80 of the coins in the game are to buy backgrounds not open paths, there should be plenty to spare. Either that or you spent too many buying saves already that weren't needed, which I could see.

2) 5 levels in a row starting with only 5 lives? The HORROR! Come on, we used to plow through Super Mario Brothers with only 3 lives to start with! On a more constructive note, you could always backtrack a bit to get some more lives or

finish the world with 44, 55, or 66 at the end of your timer to get a 1-up house to appear.

END SPOILER

3) a little less relevant, but once you finish off bowser you can save wherever.

Just picked this game up at Best Buy for $30 after the price match at Circuit City and tax. The guy was really cool and just let me breeze on by, he was like alright dude what's the price?

Also, thanks for the Price Grabber rebate, I'm going to go fill that out. One quick question, do you have to write a long review or what?

STFU.

I haven't played a 2D mario consistently since Mario Advance 2...that was 5 years ago. My skills are gone. And I was plowing through the game before - I'm going to start backtracking for coins.

finish the world with 44, 55, or 66 at the end of your timer to get a 1-up house to appear.
I know, but I always forget and instinctively concentrate on getting as high on the flag as possible, than always curse after realizing that I just screwed myself out of free items/lives.
He means that if you got a mushroom in mid-air, after the pause you could jump up again from that spot in the air.
Yep, exactly. It was more of a fun trick than being useful for the most part. Like you could follow a power up mushroom into a pit and use the boost jump to fly back out of it.

I really thought you had to keep hitting the jump button in SMB to keep the multiplier going on the turtles. I'll verify it once I am playing SMB on the Wii Virtual Console again ;)

I hate to do it, but my copy is up on ebay already... superb game though... just lacking in terms of length.

I want to say that the whack-a-mole mini game is the best out of the new ones...

Currently through world three. Not completely (still have coins and secret ares to unlock), though. 59 live.s

This game is awesome. However, I still think Princess Peach helped me get more excited for this game.

Haven't played it much, but I just wanted to add that as far as it goes keeping the Mario 64 mini games, I can forgive Nintendo on this for a few reasons.

The first is that I don't have to unlock them. (Or, if I'm stupid, if you DO have to unlock them, at least we get a good number right off the bat.)

Secondly, they are still a lot of fun. The multiplayer elements work very well also. My gf just had a blast with them.

Third, I think Nintendo expects this game to be a system seller, and as such, they want to advertise the utility of the touch screen to all the newcomers. I'd wager a good portion of the new owners will be people picking up NSMB purely based on the fact that it harkens to their childhood. Given that, they may not be completley aware of the DS's touch screen capabilities. In much the same way it showed off a lot of versatility within Mario 64, it's doing it again here for the sake of teh n00blars. It's essentially advertisement. Very fun advertisement.

That all said, I'll probably give more impressions after playing some more.

My god the mega mushroom is oodles of fun. I just keep wanting to scream out HELL YEA the whole time I'm pwning goombas 'n shit.

I've just played through half of world 1. And thankfully even with all the whiners out there, it's not too easy. I've died plenty of times, usually due to carelessness (isn't that how it always works with Mario?). But this is one of those times when hype is great... because the game still surpasses it.

just got every world unlocked this evening. This game is exactly what I had hoped it would be and really captures the feel of the old SMB games. Anyone who disagrees with me is just plain wrong.

That's right, WRONG.

Lives flow like wine but I still get tense sometimes, running/jumping in a ZEN LIKE state of gaming orgasmic goodnesssss.

I agree - I don't find it easy at all. But then I always sucked at Mario sidescrollers. I was also playing on an airplane flight during turbulence :D. It does seem like the control is not nearly as tight as Super Princess Peach, which I just finished playing through (100%) last night. It seems there's many times when I jump on a platform and try to jump again right away and it just doesn't happen and I end up plummeting to my death. In SPP the same method would have worked just fine. It's like Mario needs time to recover or something. And if you tell me this is the way it's always been you might be right. I've only really played the 3D Marios to any extent.

Lack of ability to save whenever is a HUGE mistake - especially for plane travel :D. I had to blow some coins when I didn't really want to (just started world 2 and got through 2 levels) because we were landing.

And I've already said this in 2 other threads - but DAMN YOU ALL TO HELL for taking all the PG rebate forms. Amazing - they were gone for this game in less than a day!

I also don't think this game is easy, the levels seem just right and difficulty increases steadily. But those boss fights are a total joke...:p

Apparently I must be some kind of awesome Mario Bros super expert, because I'm almost done with the game and not once was it ever challenging... was a pretty easy game all the way through, and I've found most of the coins to boot.

This may make me a heretic, but I think I liked Super Princess Peach a little bit more... I didn't really dig the 3-Dish type graphics of New Super Mario Bros, but I loved how the 2-D looked in Super Princess Peach.

Yeah, it didn't seem hard at all. I picked it up at BB today. Finished it today as well. Clocked in around 5-6 hours picking up maybe 50% of all the big coins. The game was rather easy IMO. The game is rated E for everybody so I guess the big N wanted to lower the difficulty to suit younger players. Although it was a short game, I enjoyed every second of it. I'm sure I'd enjoy getting the rest of the big coins and playing the other routes as well. Overall, excellent return to 2D. I still like SMB3 better though. :)

my gf has been wanting to get one for a while (obviously for nintendogs, animal crossing and brain age).. but when the amazon deal (99 for mario kart bundle) and i saw New mario bros.. i had to get one for me too.. and yes.. the game is exactly like every old mario game and i love it.. i've only played the first 2 worlds but i love the game.. it is so amazing..

Well, that was cool, I just blazed through all of World 8 on my first try up to the last castle in about 15 minutes, and grabbed all the coins to boot.

World 8 was definately a major disappointment for me... I was almost expecting something awesome along the lines of Mario Bros 3, or even Super Mario World, instead I got

Some generic haunted level with pumpkins

A little overrated ... or perhaps my expectation was too high. The game is good, but it's nowhere near a game that can keep me interested for many hours in a row. I was about 1.5 hours in game and already wanted a break from it. Good thing is i kept going back for more... I guess to me this is one of those short half-a-hour break games.

And yes, save system is a pain in the ass....

Damn, I've been playing at least 3-4 hours and I'm just into World 3, and that was after using the warp pipe to skip most of 2. To be fair, I did spend some time on World 1 trying to get the coins, but I didn't get nearly all of them either. I need to go back to 2 and play some more before finishing 3. I imagine at the rate I'm going it will take me 15-20 hours just to get through and get about 75% of the coins.

I'm on the final castle, and it's pissing me off=(

That doesn't mean that this game is bad, oh no my friends, it's one of the few games I've purchased in a long while that justifys the full price. You don't need Black or Call of Duty 2 to be visceral; all you need is that gut-wrenching moment when you launch off a koopa troopa to nab a big coin, and BARELY make it onto the ledge to scrore your midway point. Sweaty palms? Check.
Complaints:
-Music gets repetitve at times, but the tunes are great.
-Not enough new enemies.
-More big mushroom, damnit. Make a whole level where you have to use the mega mushroom in the vain of Mario 3's Giant world

The ton of extra lives thing doesn't really bother me because, if I ran out of lives, I'd just continue anyway (which wouldn't do anything considering I use toad houses as midway saves). There's only one man who would not enjoy this game: Hitler.

Now, I must get back to it, and find a way to open worlds 4 and 7.

My fiancee expressed interest in playing this game today... once again Nintendo has my thanks.

I just need to finish world 1 before I hand it over to her in case it takes a while to get it back. And to RF's statement: this is probably the first game that's given me sweaty palms in years.

 There's a very tasteless joke I could make, especially now that you're engaged, but I won't because I am a refined gentleman...

...So...difficult...

I guess I'm the only one who doesn't want more of the giant mushroom. It's cool to see it once or twice, but I think it's a cheap trick. Whenever I get one, I hate ruining all of the pipes or other secrets that it bulldozes through. I have to redo the level without it to get all the coins sometimes, although that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Saving ruined games.

...ok, well not ruined, but...we don't Ninty holding our hands and wiping our asses every 5 seconds. Everyone needs to to sac the fuck up and get on with it. I refuse to believe the spirit of the NES has been lost in a mere two decades.

I think the saving is just fine (and after finishing SMW in < 6 hours) I don't feel too bad that it is "short".. Platformers are generally shorter then other titles but thats ok.. that promotes replayablitiy.

the mega mushroom is cool. and i seem to get it at every mushroom house i go to so maybe i'm the rarity that sees it all the time.

Hey, some of us don't have time to play for more than short bursts... what if I'm playing this on the bus and need to stop playing? A save point would be nice but it's not always there. Luckily, you can just shut the system and pick up later (hopefully the battery doesn't die). I'm not saying the save feature is bad but believe me, I'm glad I can save and not have to play hours on end to finish the game (as with the NES SMBs).

How is it that some of you are just blazing though the game so quickly? I've spent a good 8 hours on the game and have only finished 5 worlds (though I did get most of the star coins).

Also, I agree that there should've been more mega mushrooms (and the micro ones).. I just don't understand why they made the fire flower so readily attainable and kept the new power-ups at a minimum.

I'm enjoying it so far. Not blown away or anything, but it's a good mix of being familiar and yet has some originality. Half way through World 2 after about half an hour.

I know this is sacrilidge, but I stopped playing home consoles around the time of the NES partly because I got tired of easy instant death games with no saves (like the original SMB). I really didn't enjoy Mario games - there was no way I was going to play more than a level or two. Then when the arcades turned all sidecrolly and fighty I got turned off of those games.

I moved on to computer gaming for 15 years (though I didn't play games that much at all after I turned 15 or so), and just came back to the consoles with the GC and PS2. Saving is wonderful - the NES (and Atari which I grew up on) sucked because of no saves (Zelda being the exception - the only game I had on the NES with a save and I thought that was awesome).

So I'll take the new way of "holding hands and wiping asses" any day of the week, thank you very much :D.

You are not alone.

I've had more than my fair share of giant mushrooms. I've gotten them fairly often, and even have one in reserve right now in my current saved game.

And I agree, they should have some levels specifically designed for it, otherwise, chances are you're going to have to play the level again anyway...

What the heck is everyone's problem with the save system? Close the lid, put it into sleep mode and come back when you want to play more. Between the mushroom houses and the fortresses, there's more than enough save points to save if you just want to play a different game in the DS...

man this game is good becoz it's real fun.

but there's just no innovation in it yo.

I mean, this coulda been released before the 90's (of course with crudder graphix)

becoz it sure is hella steps back from mario 3 and mario world.

as an action platformer type game, even Donkey Kong Country is better and more innovative.

8.1 for originality.
9.5 for unintentional humor.
6.4 for average educational grade.

great great great game....buuuuuuuuuuuuuuut Yoshi's island is still much better (which I'm playing alongside it.) NSMB very simple and easy to zone out on for hours, but it just doesn't feel creative enough. It's almost a bit dry. I like the YI style of saturating the player with tons of shit to do and an awesome graphical style taboot. which brings me to this-- the 3-D graphics in a 2-D platformer just looks weird, because it's jaggy and not so colorful.

Those are my complaints and the enjoyment I'm getting out of the game far outweighs them and still blows most other games out of the water. it'll tide me over till Super Paper Mario and YI2 come out :D

I am loving this game. Some are complaining that it doesn't have much new to offer but I'm just happy that it's a new 2-D mario to play. I think Super Paper Mario will be more of an innovative game. Only thign I have to complain about is that some of the levels are rather on the short side. But I understand this because this is a portable game. I do think it is one of the best DS games out though.

Loving this game...but I'm stuck in...

the World 7 Ghost House. It's obviously a maze, but I can't figure it out. Anyone have any tips/solutions?

Otherwise...oh my god I LOVE THIS GAME. I'm up to Bowser's Castle, but decided to go back and beat all the normal levels before devoting myself to it. Shut up anyone who says this game is easy - BOWSER'S CASTLE IS HARD. And has a semi-confusing layout.

Still...I'm loving the level design in this game. There is some truly genius stuff.

I don't have a huge problem with it, but it certainly would be nice to be able to save on the World Map any time that you want. I typically play my DS in quick 10-30 minute bursts and I hate to have to close the lid because I am 2 levels away from a fortress and can't save yet.

I have the same complaint about M&L:piT. While the saves were usually spaced out pretty well, it would still be nice to be able to save at any time except when in a battle.

Every portable game should allow you to save at anytime between stages. I love the fact that you can save Phoenix Wright in the middle of a case.

That being said, I really like this game and can't wait for Yoshi's Island 2 (and the new Castlevania for that matter). I love well done 2D platformers.

You should save Coins so you can just open up a Mushroom house to save at any time.

I beat the game already but have to go back and unlock things, its a blast

I also have a problem with the save thing. But like stated abouve if you save your coins and then open up the Mushroom houses it isn't that bad. All in all this game is amazing.

Yeah I agree about using the coins, for some reason I just don't want to spend them ;)
