New XBOX Experience - General Discussion

DSC01330.jpg

Edit: Update complete, wow there is quite a dramatic segue ending with the old xbox startup sequence...

Making an avatar now...

Edit2: I definitely like the avatars, a step up from Miis. Theres a good amount of options for hair, eyes, etc however it is limited but on the other hand you get options with clothes and what not which is really cool. I can see these avatars being a HUGE hit with the community. You can take a picture of your avatar with a camera like function and it'll show up as your gamercard if you choose it to. I updated my gamerpic but it has not shown up on xbox.com yet, I'm not sure if they're withholding it or it's lagging behind.

Edit3: The menus are slick and fast no lag. The mini blades dash when you press the guide button takes about 2 seconds to fully load up but it works smoothly and seems a hell of a lot better than what we had before. First bug though, 1680x1050 as does 1440x900 have black bars on the top and bottom of the screen and the mini guide looks a little blurry compared to everything else all the time.

If anyone wants to know anything in particular, let me know, not sure how much more I might update on this.

Boot-up time (from power on to being able to use the dashboard) compared to the current/old dashboard? I'm assuming it's faster, but is it noticeably faster?

Netflix works; Netflix runs like a App for the dashboard sorta. The quality was kinda bad but that is most likely because of my shitty internet and it rated my internet at the lowest. Even still I am happy that it works well enough and should be good when they get the party viewing things going.

The boot up time is slightly faster but not a huge decrease or anything.

Do menus take forever to load like they do now? Surfing through the Marketplace and through my library takes a good 30-40 seconds to populate a page. I've learned to hate that stupid scrolling circle.

There's a feature now to disable auto booting a game when you insert the dvd. So now you can change game discs casually without actually starting up that game.

There is no review feature for XBLA games yet but I could see them implementing it. Theres several panes that can be scrolled through horizontally containing various information relevant to the game whether it be downloads or descriptions or achievements and so on. They could easily integrate a pane in the future for reviews.

The marketplace is MUCH faster now. Everything populates instantly and you can directly browse video or game marketplaces separately via the dashboard. You can also navigate via the alphabet if you are looking for something in specific.

Everything seems much more visually organized as you can scroll through everything by boxarts or avatars or what not. Scrolling through the friend list now(in the new dash not the guide) is done horizontally and you can see peoples avatars and their little mini "world" around them as well as a picture of the game they may be playing. Have not had an opportunity to try a party yet.
i want o know if mkv files work now?
i'm sick of re-encoding
I don't even have the new dash and I know the answer to that. Of course they haven't added that. And seriously, re-encoding isn't that hard. TVersity and other programs will do it for you, it's not like you have to do anything.

Finally. I've been wanting this feature for a long time.
Nice capris.
It's funny because it defaulted me to something that's much closer to capris(granted "default" is really just a random starting point that you choose). Those that I have there are "cargo shorts" according to them, some of their other stock choices weren't that great pants/shorts wise.

They did have a dress up section where you can put a suit on your avatar and you can save "outfits" for your avatar. Something tells me that they want to emphasize role playing with these avatars.
Dastly, can you incorporate gamerpictures into avatar's clothing?
From what I can tell, you have to use clothes items so if there's a clothes item that lets you use your gamerpic, I do not believe it exists yet. The clothes is somewhat limited as I suppose they want you to buy new clothes.
I apparently unlocked some jacket somehow when I started as it had a gold coin next to it and was called "pixelart" or something...

One interesting thing is that they don't limit you from cross dressing. You can also choose a feminine haircut and clothes. Beyond that there is some very fun things like facepaint, Kratos scar, and so on...
Finally. I've been wanting this feature for a long time.
Indeed! It's about time.

And thanks for the impressions, dastly.

EDIT: Also, thanks to whoever suggested trying the PlayOn beta. It's a very cool idea, but too bad the Netflix support doesn't seem to work well. It doesn't play most of the movies I tried, and the few that I got to work stopped doing so after a minute or two. After Googling the issue, it seems it is pretty common. I've had a lot more success using it with my PS3, though.
Ok I have to ask...does it let you delete demos from your gamercard?
Yes, even games you didn't like, as long as you have zero achievements for the game.
So I got 2 emails, but no codes at all.
There is no code. Your 360's console ID has been put on a list to receive the update. Just turn your 360 on.

I've used PlayOn a few times with Netflix and the very first time I tried to watch Superbad, it told me that it was an unsupported file. After that, it has worked fine.

Hulu doesn't seem to work at all. It does what you are describing above. It starts the video and then about 10-15 seconds in, it just quits. I really only care about thet Netflix stuff so this is just a stopgap until NXE comes out.

Oh, well in that case, no go for me either.

I'm getting crazy excited about this update, too bad I didn't get in on the beta.

Now I just need to find a good deal on a Gold subscription so I can stream Netflix movies (I have no time for actually playing games online :whistle2:()

Yeah, it's a complete toss-up for me. Sometimes things work...sometimes they don't...sometimes they work a little bit. Basically, I've had a lot more luck using it on my PS3.

I had to start a game up to receive the update but then again I was doing this when the update JUST launched.

Of course. The outfits will replace the gamerpic revenue stream. As long as there is a bunny suit I'm happy.
how?
You have to download it off the internet. You won't be able to connect to Live until the 19th though.

He is talking about if you know someone They put their hard drive or memory card on your 360 when their profile logs in it will update but your tag wont be allowed to access live as you are not "authorized" to use the NXE yet. They wont get in trouble and neither will you the punishment is your gamercard can't access live till the 19th then.

On the note that people got in.....

Yeah I suspect too sadly that other people at MS have to clean up a mess that Major created. Sorry to say it major but it's true he told people they have a good chance which wasn't really the case and we all knew that but he completly passed by the fact that they wanted people outside the US. I know I wouldn't have wasted much time calling my wife to send me my console ID since I was at work.

It also bugs me cause people on majors site (even here at cag) and elsewhere have this "I got it and you didn't hahahaha) which is really wrong that wasn't the point of it. It was to stress test etc.... Oh well this kinda additude is nothing new to the gaming world.
I am wondering if they will let more people preview it early. I have a feeling they will.
I don't see why not. Better to stagger out the release than kill the servers all at once. Looking at the bugs submitted by others and myself, they don't plan on actually fixing them before release. They'd tag the feedback as "resolved(Won't Fix)".

It's probably on torrents.

Use 1680 x 1050 resolution via vga. It will be letterboxed to preserve 1:1 pixel ratio.

sorry for all the questions, but last one. i managed to find the update, if i install will i be able to revert back, or do i have to wait till the 19th?
Is there anything worth a damn dropping between now and the 19th? If not then I'll throw on NXE.
gears of war 2? on nov 7th :p

I'm wondering that myself. I have the update sitting on a flash drive at the moment, ready to install, but I'm holding back simply because I'm not sure I want to lose the ability to download stuff until the 19th.

Orbit where did you find it? I am curious

secondly this is a one way ticket. No going back once it's installed.
Is there anything worth a damn dropping between now and the 19th? If not then I'll throw on NXE.
Mirror's Edge, Quantum of Solace, GOW2, EndWar, CoD WoW, Red Alert 3, and Banjo Kazooie.... :bouncy:
Yes, even games you didn't like, as long as you have zero achievements for the game.
Woah, this is probably the thing I have wanted most since I got my 360. I hate having lots of crappy rental games on my profile that I played for 5 minutes and returned.
I just wished they would hav allowed you to erase any of them regardless of achievements received. - Maybe next major update they will allow that.

This, and the avatars are what I am really excited for. The 19th can't come soon enough.

The one thing I'm really worried about in regards to installing this, is that it'll hit the 19th and my 360 still won't be able to get online for some stupid reason. However, I'm sure that Microsoft has taken that into account somehow, if they were warning people about using it on their friend's consoles.

i dont want to get banned, so pm me and ill let you know

I'm sorry if this has already been asked, but has anyone tried installing the Xbox Live Arcade Unplugged compilation to see if, by some strange chance, the games would be treated like normal XBLA games(not having to leave the disc in the tray) instead of like the other installed regular 360 games? I'm tired of swapping game discs whenever I want to play Geo-Wars on a whim.

it works! :D good thing i have two xbox's lol, cause pretty much like everyone said, you can only play offline on your GT. but everything works, and loads very fast. and 1680x1050 is cool ,except for the letterboxing :(

No avatars? I'm holding out on the update til I know if I can make an avatar or not.

Wait wait wait, so you mean to tell me that I no longer have to have Yaris on my Gamertag? SWEET!
