NFL 2010-2011 Season Discussion Thread
Favre filed his retirement papers with the NFL. It's might actually happen!!!
This season was the season where Favre couldn't show there was anything left. This should be it.
Alright, if Farve does indeed retire then I hope that ESPN would just let this dolt go quietly into the night. No Farve special, no look at his career segment, no montage of clips.
Way too much FavreWatch this preseason makes me believe they'll bring the coverage and talking heads. Suddenly I want a Packers-Jets Super Bowl just for the irony of it all.
Thank you Jets pass rush for showing up and proving me you should shut down Tom Brady for awhile.

Jets to the bowl baby.
I don't know if I'd call it shutting down Brady as opposed to shutting down their offense. The Patriots didn't have the personnel to overcome what the Jets were doing on defense. They didn't have anyone to stretch the field to give Welker space underneath, and didn't have anyone that could beat Revis or Cromartie in a 1 on 1 matchup. That allowed the Jets to take away the middle of the field. Hernandez would've really helped them if he were healthy.

They were picking up yards in the first quarter but didn't execute when they needed to. After that, they had that long drive in the 4th quarter where they took 8 minutes to go down the field and get 0 points. That was the game.

The Pats defense kept them in the game but without any pass rush, Sanchez had all the time he wanted and they couldn't force him into making many mistakes. The few times they pressured him, he made bad throws. What they needed was to make him turn the ball over but they couldn't do it.

The good news for the Patriots is that on paper they should actually be able to improve their team next year. All the young players will have another year of experience under their belts and they hold 3 of the top 33 draft picks (17, 28, 33). I expect them to Franchise Mankins and re-sign Light, so they should be able to use those picks to substantially improve their pass-rush, which I think is obviously their most glaring weakness. The return of a healthy Ty Warren wouldn't hurt in that area either.

Hopefully there's football next season.
Really, just look at some of their fans in this thread. It's funny to see the east coast teams fans whining. They get 100X more coverage than they deserve.

As far as the team. I like them and hope they make it to the SB because they haven't been in a while.
I will say this.......do you know why the east coast teams get more pub? The teams in the West in large are awful. The top teams in the league are NE, NYJ, PITT,BAL,GB,CHI......the Bears are the closest team out west.

Thats why you dont hear about them.
What I find funny is how many Jets fans actually exist; let alone how anybody really gives a crap about the team (that includes everyone bitching about them in this thread). I always thought everyone thought of them like they were the redheaded stepchild of the Giants (like the Yankees vs the Mets) and just totally disregarded them (i.e. the whole reason for the rebrandingfollowing HBO tv program to show that they are people too:lol:). Sounds like a bandwagon is forming...

Brett Favre might actually be done this time. I guess he doesn't want his image even more wrecked than it is.
I live near Cortland NY, where they have had training camp. This place was a Bills town before the Jets showed up and now you would think we are a mile away from the Meadowlands the way things changed.
Look back at all your posts in this thread and tell me you weren't hating. And every other post had either "Jets are so cocky, can't wait until NE shuts them up" or "Jets are one and done".

Brett Favre was sued, not the Jets. The Jets will never get respect until they win the whole thing.
First, I did look back at my posts and while I have had comments on the Jets throughout the season the majority of those posts have actually dealt with the media over-hyping the Jets which I still feel as if they did. This of course contradicts your sentiment that the media, and everyone else for that matter, have been "hatin' on them Jets" all season.

Nowhere did I say that I couldn't wait for the Patriots to shut them up or that they are one and done. My feeling was, and still is, that they are a team that is successful only because of their defense. Their offense is nothing special at all, and aside from last weekend's showing, they haven't had any amazing offense games. I mean let's remember some key games for the Jets here: Packers loss 9-0, Ravens loss 10-9, Patriots Loss 45-3, Bears Loss 38-34. Aside from the Bears game, notice a trend here?

And finally, yes, the Jets organization IS actually being sued in addition to Favre:
http://abcnews.go.com/US/gma-exclusive-brett-favre-sued-sexual-harassment-jets/story?id=12531048

Christina Scavo and Shannon O'Toole, both former massage therapists for the New York Jets, filed suit against Favre, the New York Jets and Lisa Ripi, a woman who hires massage therapists for the team, in the Supreme Court of the State of New York today

So in closing, no I don't like the Jets, am I "hatin' for hatin' sake" though? No, and here's why:

Rex Ryan is a boorish, brash, and just downright crass head coach
Their strength and conditioning coach tripped a player in the middle of a game
Consistent trash talk, not clever at all, but downright crass behavior that is never addressed by the leadership of the team-recent example: Cromartie calls another player an ass (among other things) and rather than reprimand the player the coach joins right on in furthermore you have players downright telling the other team's players they will end their career and nothing is done about it, Welker on the other hand makes vague illusions at insults and is benched for the start of the game, not a particularly strong punishment but it at least sends the message that type of behavior is not tolerated by the leadership of the team
Accusations of harassment by a female reporter at the beginning of the season-even though the degree to which this occurred has been downplayed by the reporter herself, some type of harassment did occur and even if it was just cat calls, hootin' and hollering, whatever, when combined with the Favre scandal it begs the question of just how much of a sophomoric, college boys atmosphere is tolerated on the team, quite simply the Jets have shown themselves to be completely classless and a team that doesn't deserve my respect.
Everyone outside of NY is really tired of Rex Ryans gimmick.
I'm not tired of whatever his gimmick is supposed to be.

I wouldn't call Chicago or Green Bay east coast teams, and maybe not Pittsburgh either depending on the argument. They're in the midwest and are even CST, if I'm remembering the time zones correctly.
anything but the Steelers in the SB
Amen... as a browns fans there are tons of frontrunning bandwagon Stillers dolts running around here and they've all been unbearable since about 2006 when they started coming out of the woodwork in droves.

So old man Davis promotes Hue Jackson for the Raiders next coach. I'm sure there were zero Raiders fans that didn't see this coming, since it fits Al's m.o. to a T. You can always count on Al to go with the cheapest coaching candidate available.

At least it seemed like you finally had a somewhat dangerous offense this year. So if it is due to that guy... maybe thats not the worst thing in the world.

You are going to see that with ANY team that has the success the Steelers have had since the 70's... The true fans (like myself) stuck by during the lean times in the late 80's and early 90's when a playoff birth was a bonus. I NEVER used to know of anyone who was a fan of the Pats until they started winning their titles.

The fact that they are hated so much now by all non steelers fans just goes to show how relevant they are these days... 15th AFC title game shot

That said I personally hope they dont play up about Polamalu, Miller, and Smith being out of the loss to the Jets. A similar situation back in the mid 90's happened when they hosted the AFC title game against the chargers. They lost a close final week matchup in which they rested most of their key players at the time. When the title game came up, that was all I heard about from the steelers, how it was going to be a different game with everyone playing... It just fueled the chargers to an upset victory in that game. Looking back, Id have rather lost that game than the SB against the 49ers, but it still hurt nonetheless...

McFadden is becoming a beast and if the passing attack could come together and supplement what he brings, Raiders would have a great offense.

I'm concerned about what Jackson is going to do on the defensive side. There's nothing too notable defensively except Seymour and Asomugha, who is up in the air when free agency starts and you can believe there will be some big bids for him.

They picked up a ton of fans in the early 90s when Kraft bought the team, brought in Parcells and drafted Bledsoe. They've sold out every game since 94.

Whoever is successful or popular at the moment will pick up the bandwagon fans, thats why its more fun when people hate your team.

True... you guys also have that rookie LB who is good... McClain or something? I heard that Asomugha may be screwed by the collective bargaining problems. So maybe there is a way to keep him without breaking the bank after all.

Ive lived in the deep south since 93... they didnt pick up fans here until the super bowl wins...

What's amazing were all the blowhard Alabama fans that got on the Saints bandwagon last year that didnt give two craps about them earlier

Yeah, I was happy that they hired Jackson. I'd have preferred to keep Cable and have total continuity.

But at least this way their is continuity and they can hopefully build on the 8-8 season this year, rather than having a total coaching change and likely taking a step back.

I see Green Bay and Pittsburgh moving on to the Super Bowl. The Patriots weren't equipped to exploit Sanchez with their lack of a pass rush, the Steelers will be all over him. He'll turn over the ball at least once. The Jets offense scored the points they did because of the incredible field position they were being handed, I don't see that happening here.

I love Green Bay over Chicago, to me its close to a lock. Chicago's defense would be at their best on turf, their pass rush is everything and as we saw in the snow against the Patriots, when the field isn't so great and they get slowed down, you can pick them apart. Aaron Rodgers is the best QB still standing.

I was actually curious to know what Raiders fans thought of Cable. From my limited exposure, he seemed like a guy who was actually turning a lost franchise in the right direction. But when you were that bad, it isn't going to happen overnight. Maybe Davis was a bit too quick on the draw.

As a Green Bay fan, I've been amazed at how many Bears fans I've been running into all of a sudden, so as a courtesy, I let them know I'm a Packers fan and we just get into it :p
The team is just amazing when they're focused, but with how familiar both teams are with each other, you can be sure the Bears are gonna give em a helluva game.

Rodgers is going to have to break a couple tackles again to keep drives alive, I just don't see the Bears letting him slip through like Abraham from the Falcons did hah, and EVERYONE better be practicing on their ball handling, you know damn well the Bears are gonna be clawing at it every down, and they are pretty succesful at it...

My cousin convientently is a Bears fan, so we're all getting together for a shit-talking, in your face, my momma could play better, sit your ass down fest :D

It's gonna be nuts!

Well lets see...any team I'd go for is out sooo I'll stick with the Jets again.

And the Bears, simply because I never liked the Packers at all.

I'm pretty indifferent about both games honestly.

Guess I'm pulling slightly for the Bears since one of my friends is a die hard fan. Otherwise, I'm pretty neutral on those two teams.

Steelers are my most hated team, so guess I hope the Jets win. But I hate all NY teams, and the Jets are hard to root for in anyway with Ryan and all the shit talking they do.

Does anyone know how much money winning the superbowl gives a team? I am sure it boosts the economy of the home town but does winning the game give the team/players more money?

For example, win superbowl here is 2 million bucks.

From a quick google, it looks like just the players get a bonus for making the game and winning.

From Answers.com:

Winners of the 2010 Super Bowl (XLIV) received $83,000 and losers took home $42,000.

The amount has grown every year. In the first Super Bowl, the winners took home $15,000 and losers got $7,500.

Thanks dmaul, the reason why I asked is I was looking at Troy's ring and it kinda just popped in my head. Each ring cost roughly 50k for each and every player plus a lower costing ring for each of the coaches and trainers and such.

That plus the payout each player gets for making the game and/or winning it means that it cost the NFL like tons of millions of bucks just for a team to win.

The amount of money the NFL must make each year must be in the stratosphere. Last I heard it was over 100 billion bucks a year just by the fans alone. Shit is crazy sometimes.

 Jay Cutler sucks ass. I don't know why everyone here in Chicago is in love with him. Poor Bears. They're not even trying to win.

100 billion is off by quite bit.

Whoops, I added a extra 0. My intentions were to write over 10 billion bucks a year not 100. Thanks for catching that.
