Nintendo 3DS - General Discussion Thread
I agree... but Luigi's Mansion looks gooooooood....
I haven't seen or played it but it's probably since it's made by Next Level Games. They are gaining a pretty solid track record.

All of these amazing games coming to 3DS makes me feel even better about waiting to buy a Wii U. At this point with the new consoles coming out this fall I won't be buying a Wii U until this time next year at the earliest. I am going to be so busy playing all these 3DS games I won't even think about not having a Wii U. I will buy one eventually because I still love Nintendo (even though it can be hard at times) but for right now almost every single Nintendo franchise I care about is coming out on the 3DS....and in the next calendar year!!!

I'm not really all that excited by most of the announcements. I'm sure the games will be great; they're just not franchises that excite me much. I do really want that Animal Cross 3DS XL, though, although I've actually never played any of the AC games. It just looks awesome and I would actually consider upgrading for it. Not sure why so many people seem to think it looks girly; I'd have no problem sporting that thing in public.
He's sad because the 3DS is getting a ton of great new games, and the Vita...well it's at least a nice piece of hardware.
This is how I feel. I think the Vita is an awesome piece of hardware, but the lack of fun games for it is immensely disappointing. And it feels like they've already forgotten that it exists because they hardly release anything for it. When a decent game does release, it's almost always something I would rather just play on my PS3.
I imagine they'll let E3 be mostly about the Wii U.
I hope so. Like the Vita, it's a great piece of hardware that is getting no attention whatsoever. Both of these platforms were released too soon, I think. Regardless of the power behind the new Xbox and PS4, I think Wii U is the console to have, especially when you factor in Miiverse which is ridiculously more enjoyable than I ever could have expected.
Goddamn it, do I buy a Wii U just to support Earthbound?
Pretty much. Although there aren't a lot of exclusive games for it right now, it does at least get most of the multiplatform Xbox/PS3 games. And when a game actually utilizes the gamepad, it's a fairly unique experience. The Wii U is easily my favorite console ever; it just needs some damn games to come out ASAP.

They are just trying anything they can to spur some Wii U sales.

Less is needed on the 3DS right now with Zelda, Yoshi etc. coming out.
I don't see why the Wii U VC is exclusive. These games should be able to run on the 3DS fine.
Are there any SNES Virtual Console games on 3DS?

Not yet, but a unified system for VC the same as PSN handles PS1 games would definitely influence my interest in the Wii U. I have a feeling Nintendo is avoiding putting the same games (and to an extent, the same platforms) on both systems. Other than NES, there aren't any actual console titles on 3DS, only handheld.

IMO it's a huge missed opportunity, and the business model has already been set up for them and shown to be successful, they just had to blatantly copy it and slap the Nintendo logo on it.

From what I've read, Nintendo basically includes a version of the emulator with each game made for that platform, which means that it's not possible until they get universal emulators and put them into the system at the OS Level so that they could just release ROMs that boot into NES, SNES, N64, or whatever mode necessary like how it works for PS1 games on the PS3/PSP/Vita. I don't get the feeling that they're going to make that move even though it would be better for them in the long run.

Then there's the problem of the four eShops being completely separate from one another, which just feeds into the whole lack of unified account system that needs to be addressed ASAP by Nintendo with the big digital marketplace push that they're trying to make.

Nintendo is just now starting to release GBC games on the 3DS (it was Link's Awakening DX for the longest time) so SNES is still a ways away.

Other than a few select titles namely the Pokemon and Dragon Quest/Dragon Warrior games I really can't think of anything outstanding on the GBC that I would want to revisit at this point in time just because the graphics are such a step down from even GBA type graphics. Chances are if I want to play a GBC game, I already own the cart and haven't played it in years already, so wasting money on a digital version that I will probably never play doesn't sound too appealing right now.

I want to agree with you but I have never played The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons and I will definitely get those. The only other games that I would consider playing would be Pokemon games but only if they updated them so that I could easily transfer Pokemon to Pokemon X and Y somehow. The other problem is that Nintendo will probably charge too much for these games.

I bought Gunman Clive. That game is pretty good. Somewhere between Contra and Mega Man, but a lot more forgiving, due to short stages and unlimited lives.

You will likely have to wait until the postgame to transfer Pokemon from Gen V and earlier. As for price, the main series games have consistently been $34.99 for a few gens now.

All 3 Zelda games on GBC are outstanding. Not outstanding for a GBC game given the limited hardware - outstanding in that they are top-tier Zelda games and still better than most games being released today in general.

I still go back to Donkey Kong '94 from time to time as well as Tetris (the GBC version is the definitive version, IMO - just a tiny bit above the Atari arcade version).

I am disappointed that the Tetris version release on the VC was the original GB version instead of the GBC DX version. Still, I bought the GB version and would probably buy the DX version if it were offered.

I'll give you Link's Awakening but the Oracle games were a convoluted mess. Those fetch quests were annoying and made no sense. Not really Zelda games IMO.

Yeah this is what I meant by select titles, the Zelda oracle games would definitely qualify as being good. If Nintendo puts out the Pokemon GBC games then they probably won't have any multiplayer capabilities. Even though these games require a massive time investment and with all the other games coming out I just don't think I would want to bother playing them again, much less paying twice for something that I already own in cartridge form. Time is a problem as I want to play Rune Factory 4 and the new Pokemon games, not to mention all the other games in my collection. If I want to get my nostalgia fix I can pull out my GBC and Pokemon carts and play anytime.

This is probably why those games aren't out yet, you have to trade to get all the Pokemon, so playing them again without multiplayer would mean that you will never be able to fill your Pokedex in the games. The oracle games feature linking too, I think and I don't think those will have that capability on the 3DS, so I don't think any other game will either. I don't think the GBA games have multiplayer support either, unless I am wrong about that.

Now if you could transfer pokemon from the original games to the new DS ones or trade via 3DS to 3DS with the original ones then I would so be all over a re-release of the original GBC games but I seriously doubt that will be happening. You can't even transfer Pokemon from GBC gen to GBA gen.

I strongly disagree with this, I wasn't a huge fan of Seasons but Ages is fantastic, a top 5 Zelda game of all-time IMO.

um, yeah... I don't know how anyone could think these games are a convoluted mess. I also don't recall any fetch quests unless you are referring to the (optional) trading sequence to get the Noble Sword. If you play without using a FAQ and actually explore and pay attention when you talk to everyone you meet then it makes perfect sense, IMO.

The dungeons are great and the overworld(s) are huge and full of secrets - especially since you had multiple things to think about from time travel in Ages or the change of seasons in Seasons. You got to call on and ride some animals to get past puzzles (YOU GET TO RIDE A FLYING BEAR). The Goron dancing mini-game is awesome. The weapons are cool (seeds!). My head is about to explode! Anyone who likes Legend of Zelda, A Link to the Past and Link's Awakening should love these games as well.

I may have to start them again right now.

The only GBC Pokemon game Nintendo can release is Pokemon Puzzle League, unless they bring over TCG 2 from Japan. Crystal is incompatible with the current battling format.
Thanks - couldn't figure out why it wouldn't embed.
You basically only need the first part of the url 'http://www.youtube.com/watch?" and then the video id number "v=U4X-pg7w8KU" from the url for it to work. Everything should be deleted for simplicity's sake since it can mess with the forum's ability to embed the video, which also counts for youtube urls with "https" at the beginning since they'll break the thread every time.
Wow, Zelda looks fantastic. Can't wait to see that in 3D and hooray for non-stylus based control.
Seriously, that was the worth part of the two DS zeldas, I remember when they first announced spirit tracks they had said it wouldn't have stylus controls, boy, did they make liars out of themselves.

The reviews out so far for Lego City Undercover 3DS haven't been great. Nintendo Life gave it a 6, Eurogamer gave it a 7, and Nintendo World Report gave it a 5.5. The main complaint is long load times.

There is a demo on the estore. Looks amazing in 3D

Correction. There is a 3D Video in the eshop, but it looks very good.

My 3DS XL came in today and I'd like to get some protective accessories for it before I start using it.

Does anyone have any recommendations as far as these things go? At a minimum, I'd like some kind of carrying case that can handle being in a backpack, a shell for the system that fits in the aforementioned case (I'm currently happy with one of these on my Vita, if that's of any relevance), and a set of screen protectors.

As devs get to know the hardware and fine-tune the 3D effects (I hear Fire Emblem makes great aesthetic use of it) I'm even more bummed I can't see it. My eyes don't work properly in concert with one another and I've never been able to see 3D movies, etc.

Just picked up the 3DS XL from today's Target sale. Purchased Pokemon Mystery Dungeon for the son and now I get the free game...which do you recommend Mario 3D Land or Professor Layton...I have played Mario games and Layton games extensively on the DS...and enjoy them both. Thanks in advance!

I'd go with Mario. You're more likely to see a good sale later on Layton than you are Mario.

I'll admit at the time I started them I probably wasn't giving them the proper time, maybe with the release as digital it's time to re-visit these.

I think I'm going to take advantage of this XL sale at Target this week and finally buy one. With the free game deal still going I figure "why not?". I stupidly passed on the last sale at Target, I'm not going to make that mistake again. I am going to buy a bigger sd card for it on Amazon...anything in particular I should know? I'm looking at this one here: http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Class...e=UTF8&qid=1366751202&sr=8-1&keywords=sd+card

Really, there are only three things you need to know. One is that 32GB is the max size the 3DS will take. Two, 16GB is a large amount of space. I own all of the Ambassador games, one GB game, nine 3DS Eshop games, three videos, four apps (Netflix and stuff), and one demo, with over 100,000 blocks remaining. Third, just buy the cheapest SD card you can find. I have never had an SD card stop working for me, and they all load at about the same speed.

Ok thanks for the replies. I have bought quite a few sd cards in my life and have also never had any issues besides a couple micros dying on me but I wanted to ask and make sure before I bought anything.

I was looking into protective cases on Amazon as well, I love the one I have for my 3ds but it seems the Hori XL case on there isn't very well reviewed. It's too big and doesn't fit the system snugly apparently. What cases do you guys have?
Isn't the speed/class rating fairly important to help the OS and all that feel as fast as possible?
So long as the 3DS can support the transfer rate, the faster the better as it will help everything load faster and less possible loading related hiccups that could occur if there is a bottleneck at that SD card point. Basically anything installed to the card should load faster, including apps installed to it. The OS itself should be on non-removable internal memory, but when loading Home, everything on the SD card should be read faster if that causes any hiccup issues for people (probably ones with more downloaded stuff).

Class 4 is "Minimum 4MB/s" whereas Class 10 is "Minimum 10MB/s". After that you would want to read the specs on the individual cards since they are going to be different since the class level only pertains to the minimum transfer rate. SanDisk's Class 10 Cards run at around 40MB/s to 45MB/s typically. Not sure on the Class 4 card linked on the previous page.

Personally, I recommend forking over the extra money for Class 10 SDHC from SanDisk whenever you need one. Though I also don't like waiting on load times, so I try to minimize them as much as possible.

Class is mostly useless. It's a rating of sequential writes only. That pretty much only matters when copying large files.

Some Class 4s will be faster than Class 10s at random write speeds, which is what matters when saving. None of those indicate anything about reading, which is what affects loading.

There's a thread on here with someone asking about 3DS XL cases, you might try there so your post isn't hidden among other unrelated ones.

I can't really talk about a case that fits the XL WITH a shell on it, but I do recommend the Hori screen protectors. I find them easy and more accurate to apply because they have a guidance system built in (if you used the HORI vita screen protector, then it's the same concept). The HORI ones are the ones with the "WOW!" on the front of the packaging lol. I'm using them now and they're not at all noticeable. super happy with em

Hey gamers, I'm hoping to get some help. I'm purchasing the Fire Emblem 3DS Bundle via Craigslist, and everything is pretty new. Seller played once, wasn't his thing and is now selling. I had a question on taking care of the system. Like I wanna know what would be the best case for the system? Then another question is 4GB a good size storage for the 3DS? Does the system have the game pre-installed with 4GB memory left, or 4GB minus the game. Thanks!
