Nintendo 3DS - General Discussion Thread

I've actually only watched one 3D movie in theatres, and that was this past week. The 3D makes things blurry at fast moving scenes, so it's actually annoying. At home, on my 3D TV, I've never had as much of a problem. But even then, I've watched like 2 movies on it in 3D, even though I own like 5 titles.

With Harry Potter a couple weeks ago, we went to a 2D showing, and heard some people say the 3D added nothing.

I am with you and so is my wife and most others we know. 3D is just a gimmick. It does add to an experience, but its such a small addition that its hardly a must have feature. 3D is like a dash of extra salt on top of popcorn, its nice to have...but it hardly makes it a new product, its still just popcorn. Thats part of why iv had such an issue with the 3DS, because it adds nothing new, its screen is much smaller then many handhelds available and coming out and its line up is not strong enough. I really think Nintendo thought they could cost on the 3D gimmick, especially after the hot E3 hype.

The problem is that very few movies and games actually try and take advantage of 3D technology. When it comes to the consoles and the 3DS, games take a significant performance hit in order to do so because they just tack it on.

If the 3DS doesn't do a lot this holiday, my guess is they'll do a re-branding of it, removing the 3D.

EDIT:
Also, I have to wonder if the 3DS will lower the generic game price sooner or later.

I don't know about a re-branding, but a remodel+relaunch sometime in 2012 may as well be set in stone at this point. I'm guessing we'll also see some niiiiiiiice Club Nintendo gifts for Japan over the course of the next year. Remember the gifts from GC's end/Wii's launch period? Yeah, that kind of nice.

The only thing I'm really hoping we see out of all this chaos is a significantly stronger WiiU launch window lineup. Price is a factor but Nintendo really must understand by now that having some games (besides Wii Sports' inevitable equivalent) ready is going to make or break them.

A cheaper remodel would be a very smart move. $180 for the 3D capable 3DS and $120-$150 for a basic model. Nintendo would never do this though because it may cost to much to justify it, Nintendo would not want to splinter their market and Nintendo would not want to admit their system failed because of 3D.

Edit - I think another problem too is that a lot of people are just automatically holding off for the next model. Nintendo the last few generations has released their handheld and then a year or so later released an upgrade and continued to do so time and time again. The GBA was crap....the SP was fucking awesome though. Same with the DS to the DS lite. So its hard to see the 3DS with its piddly screen and not think...just wait a year and Nintendo will release something 10x better. I would get a 3DS if for Mario games alone....but I am not about to buy one then have to trade it in just to get the REAL 3DS next year(and it is the Real one the same way no one thinks of the original fat DS they think of the lite).
So while the 3-D is an interesting novelty, it's in no way going to be a long term selling point or marketing strategy for Nintendo.
And dual screens are just a gimmick. Did you know that many games don't even need them? Or touch input? They'll never catch on.

3D is like anything else: if it's used well, it enhances the experience. Unfortunately, many movies just wanted to cash in on 3D. They either added it in post-production or did a half-assed job.

Part of the reason consumers are turning away from 3D is because of lazy movies or poor 3D that adds nothing to the experience. I can't be the only person who reads movie reviews that pretty much say whether or not it's worth it to see the movie in 3D. Why would I pay more for an experience that adds nothing?

The 3DS has a tremendous possibility for being another revolution of gaming. The augmented reality stuff points to this, if nothing else. Both my son and I have spent two days just messing with the 3DS -- we have yet to plug in a 3DS cartridge.

Nintendo's problem is that they're often good at introducing something new and amazing and then they utterly fail to follow up. Or they let the market become flooded with crappy software that either uses the technology poorly or not at all.

There were lots of DS games that didn't need two screens or were ruined by inappropriate stylus control. There were even more Wii games ruined by waggle, stupid control schemes, or lazy, cash-grabbing shovelware.

Those don't invalidate the great games on either system. The DS turned a gimmick into a standard. The Wii...well, regardless of what you may think about it, it was successful.

The 3DS could go either way. But it's way too soon to call it a fad and move on. As with any technology, it's what you do with it that matters. A few games that really blow people away could change everything.

Pretty hilarious watching overseas auctions. There is a long line of people getting fuuuuuu'd because they made their bids around 23K Yen before the price drop. Stuff that's listed at 18K Yen is just sitting there wide open and no one's biting.

I'm hoping I can pick one up in the next two days and get it shipped to me in time to get those classics.

Glad they dropped the price, $250 just felt like too much for a handheld to me. It will be interesting to see if they continue with the gimicky 3D aspect or start focusing or start focusing on the graphical improvements on 2D games.

Now all Nintendo needs to do is release a few new (none of this N64 now in 3d crap) great games and I might consider buying one.

Yes. Downloading Pokedex 3D is preferred since it's free.

As for Augmented Reality stuff, I wish Nintendo would just put out digital cards online for free so we could print them out and have something to work with.

I'd also like them to improve the DS emulation, because it's still pretty bad.

I was shocked at how much better Mario 64DS plays with the circle pad. It's still a digital interface, but it's smoother than using the dpad on the DS and more reliable than using the thumb strap.

Also, are there more AR cards than it comes with? Nintendo has the 6 or so it comes with online to print out.

No, but Kid Icarus Uprising is going to have more cards this fall, but it seems really limited. I don't know of anything else at the moment.

After having a REALLY bad experience at the movies after seeing a 3D movie I will never see one again. Nor will I look at anything in 3D again, including the 3DS, if I buy one someday the 3D mode is gonna be turned off instantly. If the movie is released only in 3D in the theaters here then I am not seeing it. Theaters need to find a solution for those people who get very uncomfortable seeing a 3D movie, yet those who get forced to go because their friends drag them. Its like $15 here to see a movie in 3D, which is not helping. Another thing that isn't helping is that parents are now fearful that their kids eyes will be damaged from 3D anything so they are keeping their kids from it.

3d is not a fad. Sure some people can't see it, and the premium is typically $4-5 dollars, so people won't pay to see any movie in 3d. 3d costs nothing more to add to a tv (active 3d that is). I bought my 3d tv, a 50" plasma for $999. Sure I had to pay a couple of hundred dollars for glasses, but that's not necessarily an invest I had to make. With this I watch all the 3d I want at home. It's not going away. They may not make every movie in 3d, but the technology is solid and cheap. I'm not saying it's going to be 100% market replacement for standard tvs, but it should hit 40-50%, which is far from niche.

The sad thing with most 3d movies, is that Avatar is still the gold standard. It seems they should have been able to release something better by now.

Jackass 3D used it well.

The problem is that good 3D is few and far between.

Not to mention that a large percentage of people who wear glasses really are hurt by this since it's lens-discrimination. So with glasses you've already alienated a good portion of the projected viewing audience.

I don't know how to word it better than that.

Why is is that the large unwashed masses say 3D is a fad....yet the 2 or 3 people that have actually bought 3D tvs and love the technology feel they can dictate to the rest of us we are wrong, its amazing and its here to stay. Its not just that a lot of people cant see 3D, its that a lot of us just flat out dont care.

A lot of my decision to hold off for now has to do with this. The $170 point now + the 20 games is pretty tempting, but it's pretty much a guarantee that Nintendo will release a redesign that will blow away the launch model in every aspect, and as someone who jumped onboard at the launches of the GBA and DS, I'm not going to get burned for a 3rd time.

Also, probably my biggest gripe is the battery life--3-5 hours is a huge step backward from the 15+ I'm used to with my DS lite. So by the time I do decide to buy, it'll be an improved version (with hopefully better battery life) backed by a more established library of titles compared to now.

I've never heard about parents being fearful about damaged eyes, the argument I hear most is that your kids don't care whether the movie is in 3D or not, chances are they won't even be paying attention to the movie in the first place, it's just an excuse to get them to shut up for an hour and half, so might as well save 12 bucks and see the 2D version.

I don't care about the 3DS price drop since I am a LONG ways off from buying one but what sucks is that I paid $150 for a DSi for my son about a month ago. Oh well.

Question for future reference:

Since I am an "ambassador" I will get my 20 games on my system. Is there a way to remove my personal information but leave those 20 games on the machine?

There are paranoid parents out there, I know several who won't let their kids go certain places because of germs, and the places we are talking about aren't even anything I would consider dirty. I have heard parents say that staring at small screens isn't even good for kids eyes then they refuse to buy them the handheld system because the screen is too small and they are afraid of eye damage. There is a large community of parents out there who think the more they shelter their kids and keep them away from anything media related the better it is for the kids (video games are totally evil to these people)! There is also extreme pressure from other parents to shelter your kids and run around spraying disinfecting solution on everything they touch (ok that might be going a bit overboard but you get the point). No matter which way you parent your kids, you are doing it wrong, and you should be doing something else, according to most parents around here. You have to feed your kids organic food only, never take them out to eat and keep them away from TV and video games because its bad for them and any food that is not organic is bad for them. Plus on the other hand you have parents who do not raise their kids at all and send them out for the day and tell them not to come back till its time to go to bed. There doesn't seem to be a middle ground, at least where I live. Big reason why I am never, ever having kids.
Big reason why I am never, ever having kids.
That is one of the dumbest reasons I've ever heard for not wanting to have kids. It's OK to not want them - you don't need to come up with weird excuses. ;)

As a parent, I know from experience that the way I raise my kids is the right way and everyone else is doing it wrong. :D

Please note: Javery refers to his many hand made arcade machines as his kids.

His children are usually referred to with less emphasis on wood grain and less architectural jargon.

My kids (8 and 10) like 3D movies, but I don't care for them at all. We saw Cars 2 in 3D and the 3D was blurry during fast motion and really didn't do anything for me regardless. I'd much rather have seen it in 2D. Ok, actually, I'd much rather not have seen it at all. Worst Pixar movie ever.

3D sales at the theater have taken a huge drop as to what they were several years ago. ...we have 4 theaters out of 20 capable of 3D at the movie theater I work at. When we had our sold out 'Harry Potter' midnight...we only used 2 of those theaters as 3D because sales were so bad for it. We had been pre selling tickets for a good month and a few days before the midnight show we had sold out at least 12 auditoriums ...the 3D house had 1 1/2 theaters sold. Could have added more 3D but no-one wanted to see it in 3D...which surprised me since this is 'Harry Potter'.

I get a lot of the same excuses from patrons of why they don't watch the 3D version: cheaper, the 3D isn't that great, and they have to wear glasses. I honestly think it really is not as popular as it was a few years ago...I don't think it will go away anytime soon, but I think there might be less 3D content. Although I really don't know about home sales for 3D movies...that might be where the money is now.

I don't know if I'll be buying a Nintendo 3DS at the moment, there's honestly nothing enticing me within the year to actually want a Nintendo 3DS. I mean there's SMT: Devil Survivor Overclocked, but that's basically just a remake of Devil Survivor for the DS.
Have any of you tried those glasses that thinkgeek sells that turn 3d movies into 2d?
I hope not, I would hate to think of paying for those glasses, plus ~$3 more a movie to use them.
I hope not, I would hate to think of paying for those glasses, plus ~$3 more a movie to use them.
What those would be useful for are for parents who can't see 3D (only one good eye, for example), but who have kids who want to see the movies in the 3D. Then the parent could at least get a tolerable experience out of it. Mind you, the better move would be to not let them see the movie in the 3D. :) Still, if you want to treat them....

That actually is pretty cool, it kind of looks like the DS cover. Speaking of which I was at TRU and I noticed the DS version was coming in a red DS case. When did that happen?

They made the announcement about the red cases for some of the Mario DS games at the end of May when they dropped the DS Lite's MSRP to $99. They do look pretty cool.

Karts with kites instead of motorcycles. I guess that's a step in the right direction?

They ought to just port the port of Diddy Kong Racing already, but skin it for MK. I'm only 10% kidding on this one. Strip DKR of the adventure/exploration mode, leave the vehicles in (maybe add a few more), and replace the generic and/or rarekong theme with Mushroom Kingdom themes.

I just saved you a bunch of dev time on MK8, Nintendo. When they implement this, I'd better get a consulting fee....and I'm talking cash, Iwata-san, not this complimentary 3DS downloads bullshit.

What's on your plate this week?

Although I own Picross and Picross 3D, I'm strongly considering Mario's Picross. Although, are all the puzzles available to download through Picross DS? I'm trying to remember how that works...

Mario's Picross eh? As soon as there's a full-on picross game for the 3DS, my wife will want me to buy one.

I swear to god... all she ever does when she plays games is replay Sudoku, Picross, Picross 3D, Puzzle Pirates, or play Facebook games. She's 100% completed Picross 3D twice now.
What's the process for upgrading the SD card if there's already downloads on it like Excitebike and the Pokedex?
From what I've read, you have to copy everything to the new card and you can't combine the files from 2 different cards (used with the same 3DS) onto a third larger card.

So if you run out of space on your first card, you should just get a larger second card, move all of the files from the first card to the second card and then use that as your one and only card. Because if you start using a second card w/o moving the files from the first card onto it, you'll never be able to merge the two cards onto a single card.

Sign me up when there's a 3d, and nice looking version of Mario picross. Until then, I've already played the other versions to death. And would much rather play those again, than look at this ugly black and white version.

This system is dying a slow death, and I seriously doubt that this type of offerings are going to do anything to save it. That said, the 3d golf game released last week looks promising. I may actually buy that.

It's the eshop, silly. The DSi had a plethora of crap released for DSiware, and sales of the DS were just fine.

I think what Nintendo should do for the eShop is have videos of games they're releasing on the Shop before it comes out.

That, or put Nintendo Week on Nintendo Video.

The problem with 3D in films is, as many have stated, that it's poorly done, and seems like a rush job or an afterthought.

Hell, when I saw Avatar Airbender, the best 3D was during the previews.

I'm 100% behind the 3DS and like what I've seen so far. The 3D in bust a move is done well and is even incorporated into the game as something new as a gameplay feature. The 3D is so so in Pac Man dimensions. I haven't gotten around to playing Samurai Warriors yet, but I will this weekend when i am travelling and going up North.

Sorry if this has been reposted I haven't read all the thread, but here's the info on the ambassador program from Nintendo:
