Nintendo 3DS - General Discussion Thread

Seemed like there was platforming in it to me.

I'm pretty excited for it personally. I loved Lords of Shadow and I enjoyed the demo for this.

I actually got my first girl on streetpass when I was out today, I know it happened in Target but it wasn't the demo unit because the demo unit had style savvy in it and this person was playing Mario Party. I also got the demo unit which was called Mii when I was there last time, at least I assume it was the demo unit. I am having trouble streetpassing a demo unit in a GS, I cleared out the Mii's this time so hopefully next time I go by it I can get it. I know it is working since there are other Mii's on it.
How do you know if its the display model streetpass?
The tag line it gives you when you meet it usually says "I'm Target Store #123!".

Not if somebody changes it. I changed the local Target's to "Pokemon X & Y!"

I used to have 3 DSs for tagging, but TRU got rid of theirs for some reason and Best Buy refuses to turn theirs on after remodeling. Sad.

I would assume the demo units would have the last game played as the cart that is in the demo unit at the time you pass it.

Using both a Vita and 3DS now, i really wish one of them pulled together features of the other (i dont care which did it now that I own both systems). Basically Near let's you see people playing around you better, but it's less impactful. StreetPass has games and achievements to customize your avatar, but you can't see where people are playing and you have to have a chance moment where someone else close by also has their system.

You take Near's location data saving and ability to see a map of where you and someone else connected and roll in those meta games and you're golden!

As it is, I'll have to swing by GDC to really take advantage of StreetPass for the year...

Because the name of the Mii is a fake name that is either the name of the store or some stupid word that some customer used to make a Mii for it.

I've got two named "gamestop", one named "Target Guy", and one named "Football:]"

Picked up a 32 GB SD card for my 3DS so I don't need to worry about space anymore.

Can you just copy the SD card in the 3DS right to the new one or is there some transfer process?

It requires copying the old card's contents to a PC with a card reader, formatting the new card correctly, and then copying all of the contents to the new card.
P.S. Super Castlevania IV >>>>> Any metroidvania style Castlevania game.
I couldn't agree more. :D
Seems like people always forget that Castlevania wasn't always the metroidvania style. This is the same style as the pre SOTN games. If anything, people could say the series stopped being Castlevania once Symphony of The Night came out since that was completely different from the games that came before.

Anyway, I prefer this style over the metroidvania style, so I really liked the demo.

Nah, I just hated the NES castlevanias. La Mulana seems like a decent successor to them. I admit I was initially hoping to find another sequel to SOTN considering they lived on in the handheld series

I wouldn't call this castlevania V, as fun as IV was.

you can just copy

Now I can actually finish this transfer process from the old SD card to the new card since I found out last night that my card reader doesn't support SDHC, though I wasn't surprised when the SD card I left in it from the last time that I used it was a 32 MB card from my old digital camera.

Edit: Now I have over 200,000 blocks. Now I can download all of the demos, never play them, and still have plenty of space for anything else I want.

Going to have to get at least a 32GB card for my XL. I have my ambassador games, Mario Kart 7 and Fire Emblem Awakening since the free DLC was going to expire and I still couldn't find it in any GS near me (I had over $100 credit). Some games are just meant to be on the 3DS at all times.

I missed this announcement somehow but apparently you get a free game if you register a 3DS and Luigi's Mansion or Pokemon right? I haven't registered my 3DS XL yet (I think) so hopefully I can take advantage of that.

I don't know why DLC on the 3DS is handled like the PS2 with it all being available only within the game. Fire Emblem makes it worse by requiring you to play quite a bit of the game just to access it, so I'm assuming that I missed the free DLC because of that. The eShop makes it seem like I could just get it from there, but it boots up the game to check if I've played enough.

I hope the 3ds version of devil summoner 2 has some worthwhile extra content because the first one wasn't much different from the DS version.

Yeah, that drives me insane, too. And it makes me wonder, is the DLC then locked to your cartridge, or your system? I'm assuming it's the latter since that's how all eShop stuff is handled but I've yet to test it out. I want to know if I boot up someone elses' copy of NSMB2, for example, if the DLC I've downloaded will be available without any problem. It's a very odd approach to digital content.

I take it this an upgrade of the second devil survivor that was originally on the DS, I have DS: O but i haven't played it yet, I will be playing it very soon though, assuming this comes to America I would probably buy it.

The Etrian Odyssey 4 demo lets you carry save data over from the demo if you buy the full game, which is really awesome and honestly should be standard. I only played the original game way back when it came out, but never had time to finish it.

I shouldn't have downloaded the EO4 demo because it's really fun and makes me want to buy it, but no way do I have the kind of time I'd need to spend with it.

Just wondering if people think Nintendo will go the DS route and end up making newer models of the 3DS. I've been waiting for a really good sale and/or color for the 3DS XL.

This probably sounds like I'm trying to be a jerk, and I'm hoooonestly not, but anyway they did go that route-the 3DS XL. It's a nice upgrade over the original, though I kept my original just as sort of a beater unit I don't care about taking good care of to take with me anywhere.

I really don't think Nintendo is going to make a new model of the 3DS at this point, they already have 2 models and both models seem to cover all types of consumers.

In 2-3 years they might have another model, though I cannot imagine what they would do to make it worth buying over what is currently out there without splitting the current user base.

I don't think they will ever make a version with a second stick, they already have the CPP and the CPP for the XL, if they were going to move to a second stick model then they probably would have done that with the XL.

I agree. Honestly, I thought not having one initially was a mistake but I think it's actually great the way it is. I mean the last thing I want to play on my 3DS is a FPS and the camera for more traditional 3rd person adventure games can be handled in other ways. The games I most want to play are the ones you can't really do on any other hardware...
I think they should one up the competition and come out with dual stick model, but with a CPP for it as well. ;)
That's so many sticks I wouldn't know what to do with all of them.
That's so many sticks I wouldn't know what to do with all of them.
Oh geez it would be like the N64 controller all over again

I also think that Nintendo is going to stick to the single nub stick for the 3DS.

Nintendo has shown that its handheld models lag behind their console counterparts by two/three generations. Not necessarily hardware wise, but control wise they have a model where they can replicate the console experience on their handhelds every couple of generations.

For example: NES/gameboy, SNES/gameboy advance + DS, N64/3DS.

With the 3DS, I see the N64 control approach. A second analog stick is something I really wanted before I bought a 3DS, however now after playing with my XL for countless hours I really don't think it needs one for the majority of games.

The DS Lite was a "necessary" iteration. The original DS was a gamble and they had to keep costs down. Once they saw the cash pile up and the DS Lite could be produced it was a good idea to come out with it. As someone who has huge hands I love the XL model, I love the larger screen and better battery life in the 3DS XL but I think that being able to play for a long time without my hands hurting is the best feature. The DSi was the unnecessary console IMO, they should have just waited until the 3DS came out to launch the online DS shop. The only thing that I think the 3DS could benefit from is better battery life. My original 3DS' battery did not last very long.

Personally, I find the XL's buttons to be harder to hit than the original. Then again, I have small hands and only have experience with the demo models.

New colors are incoming in Japan.

There's the mint white edition:

And then there's a special edition that's to be bundled with the new Tomodachi Collection game:

And then a Nintendo Direct video announcing all this:

I don't like the white colors because the matte white will get dirty and discolor very quickly, it might even turn yellow someday like the artic white GBA. Otherwise its very cool. I also don't like the two-toned black either. I don't mind the shiny colors of the original 3DS as long as its not the aqua blue, that one is hideous, the cobalt blue that just released is much better.

My white DS Lite has held up pretty well. I don't care about new colors though - it's not like I'm going to run out and buy an entirely new system!

Hi CAG, looking to purchase a 3DS XL while I'm here in Dubai but I want to make sure it's compatible with US games. All the readings I've done point to the systems sold here as being compatible, but could someone do me a favor? Would you kindly go into the language/country settings of their US 3DS XL and see if "United Arab Emirates" is listed as one of the countries?

I read that all compatible systems within a certain region are listed there. For clarification, the systems here have a "UAE/Saudi Arabia" or "Malaysia/Singapore" stickers on the front, which I've read all fall under the same region lock as US systems. They also do sell US games here (I'm assuming since they have the ESRB ratings and are clearly marked "NTSC" with a sticker). I'd appreciate any feedback. Thanks!

BTW they also do sell PAL systems/games here. The NTSC systems at TRU have a sticker on them and the PAL games have a different ratings system in the corner.

I believe Dubai uses PAL, but that may not be the case for handheld games (or I could just be flat-out wrong). I really don't know... But I checked my region settings and UAE and Saudi Arabia are both listed.
