Nintendo 3DS - General Discussion Thread

I had to put down Ages back in the day for 2 months because I refused to use game guides for Zelda titles.

Had an epiphany one day on my way home from work and cleared the game after that. The puzzles aren't necessarily hard, but they do make you THINK.

About to begin the 6th dungeon in Oracle of Seasons. This game is substantially harder than other Zelda games, IMO, or maybe I'm just getting soft in my old age. It's such a strange combination of Link's Awakening and elements from the 3D games - Gorons, Deku Scrubs, etc. and I still haven't gotten fully accustomed to using the seasons mechanic to solve puzzles.

Isn't this the more combat-oriented of the pair, too? Is Oracle of Ages going to make me throw my 3DS across the room?

I like it. I would likely get it day one if there is a white/red like the one in some video but I think US is getting black/red which I don't like at all.

As far as design go. I don't have an issue with it. I think it would actually be very useful for me for around the house, in bed etc since there is no hinge and what apparently a better center of balance.  still, really don't like black/red and with as many 3DS that I have, I think I can wait unless something comes around that's really visually appealing.

2ds xl or bust! After playing games with an xl, i dont think going back to orig size screens for this release is a good idea.

Out of curiosity, what does everyone think of the 2DS that was recently announced?
Terrible, ugly piece of hardware that makes me question, yet again, if Nintendo really has any clue what it's doing in terms of hardware.

People seem confused by WiiU because they don't know it's a new system as opposed to an update/version of the Wii? Name a new "3DS" system as the 2DS! Create confusion for developers by splitting the user base with a system that cannot do 3D (as opposed to the 3DS where it's optional to play in 2D). "Oh, you want to add really cool and interesting puzzles/gameplay elements that rely on the 3D tech? What about people on the 2DS?". What, are they going to have to put warnings that some aspects can only be played/completed with 3D on (such as a handful of puzzles/bonus rooms in Mario 3D Land).

I can see it being a decent option for small kids, but no folding/screen protecting would make me buy a kid either a DSL or a regular 3DS for a few bucks more with piece of mind.

It is a terrible name, but Nintendo has always had strange ideas on hardware, and has never really been afraid of trying them. Game Boy Micro comes to mind.

I'll get a 2DS because I own every iteration of Nintendo handheld hardware there is. Don't know if I'll play it much, but who knows. I'm waiting to actually get my hands on one before I decide whether it's brilliant or lunacy.

2DS - nice concept considering the fact that I have the 3D off most of the time in on the XL. Just recently moving from 3DS to an XL, like many...I would never go back. It is way more comfortable on the hands and eyes than the regular 3DS. Plus the buttons are more responsive. I don't like the power button of the XL as much as the 3DS though.

I really wonder how the form factor works with the 2DS, it seems really odd because of the button placement in relation to the screen.

Honestly, I'm torn.  I like the IDEA of the 2DS.  I don't ever (or hardly ever) play my games in 3D for too long.  It just hurts my eyes.  For kids, which is what this is aimed at, it's genius.  Problem is.  I just bought my 6 y/o a 3DS on the condition that she doesn't play the 3D without my permission.  She wanted to play Animal Crossing/Mario Kart/Donkey Kong.  She couldn't do that on her DS and she normally (with the exception of Animal Crossing) plays the carts that I buy for myself.

This would solve the issue, be cheaper, and be more sturdy.  I know it LOOKS wierd, but that hinge on most 3DS' is the weakest point (and the one more likely to loosen and break for me and her).  But my problem, and her problem, is that we both play the XL now.  It's hard to go back from.  Yea the audio isn't as good but a huge screen that doesn't have me squinting is awesome too.

Now, if only Nintendo would make their network like PSN where if I DL something on my 3DS that is cross compatible, I can play it on my WiiU and visa versa.

I see this pop up every so often. What games and puzzles actually require 3D? Every 3DS game I own has played the exact same in 2D.

Honestly the only example I can think of are some small areas in Mario 3D Land. They are basically impossible objects http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Impossible_object due to the fixed perspective, but with 3D on you can see there is actually depth and while it's not 100% necessary, it helps to make it easier to navigate.

To your point though it's a micro fraction, and most "3D" is just "oooh, stuff's popping off the screen/going into it" and even then the effect is generally, imho, very subtle with rare exceptions.

This brings up a good point to stay on topic in this thread though: Anyone think of any other games/parts of games where the 3D was integral to the experience/enhanced the experience in some way beyond just visual fluff?

Nope. The 3D is pretty much useless.

Nintendo knows it doesn't add anything worthwhile, hence the 2DS. No big deal if you can't see it. If they truly believed in it, they would never release a console without it.

Because it's not for MEEEEEEEEE! Yeah, I don't know.

Also, I'd like to chime in that I enjoy playing with the 3D on pretty much all the time. It's not necessary, but it adds a little something to the presentation of most titles I play.

I like the 3D feature but due to my playstyle, I only usually turn it on for something new, cutscene or what now where I will have myself stationary for a short duration. Otherwise, my posture usually changes to much that the constant refocusing becomes too distracting.

I usually don't use the 3D simply because of battery and range limitations. I do like using it, though. As far as the 2DS goes, I think it's a good idea for the most part. Some parents are paranoid about their kids eyes and simply people will simply be drawn to the different design and cheaper price. The name seems like it's going to work against them, though. I can see a lot of uninformed parents going to the store and getting upset when they can't find any 2DS games and kicking themselves for not getting the "newer" 3DS. But still, I think it's great to have another option that helps Nintendo cover more bases. And if it doesn't work out...oh well; it wouldn't be the first time they've released a flop. At the very least, it should be a learning experience.

I don't recall if I beat Ages then started Seasons or played both concurrently (pretty sure I started Ages first though). Anyway I beat both games, and then beat both again linked (or maybe just one of them linked?).

Seasons seemed like the easier game to me, but it looked better, and the story/writing was more amusing though that's probably because of those hooded figure people!

Ages' puzzles were kinda hard; those damned goran minigame was frustrating as hell (required) and took me weeks to get past. I also had to use gfaqs as the dungeons had some crazy puzzles involving warping to past.

I've beaten Link's Awakening a lot, but the Oracle games have more depth.

I got the gba remake of LttP and found the dungeons harder to navigate (not the puzzles) and bosses a bit harder to. I haven't beaten it since I last tried last year or so - stuck in some dungeon. I got this around the time it came out as well!

I think Nintendo specifically made the 2DS to market to parents who are afraid to buy the 3DS because they don't want their kids eyes damaged with the 3D effect. Whether or not that can actually happen is irrelevant here but the fact that parents think it can happen is stalling sales of 3DS systems and instead parents are buying the cheaper DSI even though it can't play any 3DS games. Don't believe me last weekend I just saw a family buy a DSi for $99 because they were afraid of the 3D effect and because it was cheaper even though the employee recommended against buying it. This is also not good for Nintendo since they can't sell new 3DS games to kids because parents are not buying the systems, so everyone just goes to GS and buys used DS games which does nothing but pads the pockets of GameStop.

I was glad to see the other day that the recent Mii Plaza update brought back the total puzzle piece count back to that game, as I couldn't figure out why they'd remove that in the first place.

I love Picross... not sure I want to spend $6 on it though... I'll probably cave.  Have you played Steamworld Dig?  It looks kind of fun.  I wish it was cheaper though.

I wish we could have gotten Tecmo Super Bowl instead of Tecmo Bowl.
That's an SNES game, though, and for some reason those are a no-go for portables (as far as Nintendo thinks).

Personally, I'm hoping for Baseball Simulator 1000. I remember really liking that one, and I usually hate sports games.

Guys, Mario vs. Donkey Kong is awesome once you get into it a bit. Any other e-shop recommendations other than Pushmo?
Which MvDK are you referring to? I'm contemplating Mario vs. Donkey Kong™: Minis March Again! which is one of the Club Nintendo deals for the month.

Got my 3DS XL today and did the system transfer. Everything seemed to transfer over just fine. Now I can play some of the games I've been meaning to, like SteamWorld Dig and HarmoKnight.

The only negative is the lack of the charging dock, so I'll need to order one soon.

I noticed that with my XL, some of the game banner images in the eShop appear in 3D even if I have 3D turned off, which is annoying when I'm just trying to browse the eShop.

I love my XL. The only potential issue is that I find it harder to hit the sweet spot for the 3D effects, but I don't generally use 3D more than every once in a while in Swapnote, so it's not really an issue.

You should let me borrow your 3DS. I think I have completed 3, maybe 4 puzzles so far. I haven't had a pass since the relay at McDonald's first went up. I guess I'm still the last person to go there with a 3DS because nothing ever happens when I stop by.

I have 9 units in my house. Just drive by and you'll probably get hits.

That has happened, actually. I was at work and when I came home, the units I didn't take with me. (I generally take the XL and one other, both with Animal Crossing) had fresh streetpass hits. I bet someone was happy getting 7 hits at once.

There were mentions in the Direct about new Gold Pants Miis coming as well. So for those who haven't finished the puzzles, that's a guaranteed new puzzle or pink piece.

I may bite the bullet and pick up the extra plaza games on another unit. Don't want to have to buy it more than once, but I'm getting annoyed in Warrior's Way.

If you are just driving by McDs you won't get any hits, you have to actually walk in. Ever since this started I am amazed at how crowded Md's is. I also get hits from a McDs every week when I stop at a store that is right next to it. The McDs here are crazy busy no matter the location and I guess a lot of kids here have 3ds since they are cheaper than iPads and other game consoles, the 2DS and Pokemon coming out should only increase the number of hits. More than once I have seen kids in there playing, I guess if you want to get streetpass hits just hang out somewhere where there is a lot of kids, although McDs is pretty much the ultimate kids restaurant here. I suspect I will be able to get 6 hits from certain locations once they implement it.
