Nintendo 3DS - General Discussion Thread

I bought Pushmo this morning. The video on the eShop sold me on it. Just like the video for Freakyforms unsold me on it. Sure it's not a demo, but it'll suffice.

I don't see the point of the 3D thus far, but it is making it a bit easier. I've done the first 36 Challenges, but I can't seem to get Challenging QR codes though. Oh well. As of right now, I'd say $7 well spent.

I think if the 3DS' screen was half an inch bigger it'd be a major improvement. You could also make the buttons slightly bigger and bring in the 2nd Circle Pad along for the ride as well. Also, Matte finish PLEASE. I wish Nintendo could still make Communities and Memo Pad an OS feature. That'd make it an amazing handheld.

Also, a little birdy told me 'the middle of the month' for GBA games. That just so happens to fall on Thursday of this week!
I've been debating whether or not to get this game. So it's good, you say, huh? Is it difficult?

It's a puzzle game with over 250 Challenges and at 36 it's started to get into a nice groove. Then there's the downloadable Challenges via QR codes.
All of you, buy Pushmo. It rocks.
I haven't bought anything on the 3DS shop yet, but can you use Wii points that are tied to your account? I have some spare points and I wouldn't mind buying it if that is the case.

The gameplay videos I have seen remind me of Catherine a bit, which is coo.
I recently re-bought a 3DS with the TRU deal... and all I can say is after playing Super Mario 3D Land, and Mario Kart 7 the current iteration of 3DS hardware design does not do the games justice at all. The power of the system is just fine, but the design needs a revision NOW. The second a 3DSi comes out I'm selling/trade this thing in, it's terrible... but it doesn't have to be.

The screen is too small, the controls hurt my hands after 10-15mins of play, the whole device feels plasticy and cheap, the menu software/online store is atrocious. It's too bad because playing these recent big games has changed my mind about what the 3DS can be in the future... a phenomenal handheld, a portable Gamecube essentially. Nintendo needs to get that hardware revision out before next holiday IMO.

If I could have a 3DS with a 4"-4.3" screen, (hopefully) improved 3D viewing angle, much improved cameras, 2 circle pads, better battery life, and a revamped eShop/online/online functionally... this system would be a monster, probably my favorite handheld ever.

The eShop needs game demos! It's also kind of ridiculous that we don't already have NES, SNES, and GBA games up for download... how hard can it really be to implement that Nintendo?? The sad thing is even if we did have them I wouldn't even buy them after seeing how tiny the NES ambassador games play on the current 3DS' screen... no option to stretch them out for full screen, and because the current screen is only 3.5" you're essentially playing NES games in thumbnail. My eyes strain to see details that small.

Long story short, if they come out with a new and improved hardware model, and get the online together the 3DS would be perfect. Right now though, it feels like it's already forgotten.. Nintendo needs to make some announcements, or show some signs that they're working on making things better. An update with some useless Spot Pass/Streetpass junk isn't going to cut it. I want some REAL features.
This is definitely a system I'd by an XL version of.

Unfortunately, you can't. You can save your credit card information to your system though.

And yes, 3DS XL would be lovely.

wii points (NDSi points too) are not compatible.

3DS point cards are completely different.

I have some 40K on my wii, that I won't be able to use on the 3DS.

I had bought "Nintendo Points" in preparation for buying 3DS downloads, not realizing that "Nintendo" doesn't refer to the 3DS :/ I already have all the vc games I wanted for Wii, would have loved to be able to use these points to get Pushmo.
Do Nintendo points ever go on sale?
Not that I've seen.
Do Nintendo points ever go on sale?
Rarely. Toys R Us puts all point cards on sale maybe two or three times a year. I believe the best sales were 30-40% off. There have also been some rare instances where cards got clearanced out, including Walmart selling point card/silicon sleeve packs for $10 ($5 if you were lucky). There was also the transition from Wii Point cards to Nintendo Point cards, which caused a few sales here and there.

But it's not frequent by any means.

It's confusingly stupid. You could probably sell the card on here without too much trouble though.

Also, I agree with Chris in Cali that there needs to be a matte system. I think all gaming devices should be matte only, controllers, systems, and handhelds alike. Shiny looks good until you take it out of the box.

No, but I've seen a lot of people who've used it last on Mii Plazas at Demo Units. I'll go to Best Buy tomorrow and see if I can get something.
Hmm, the 3DS is starting to get good... I'm tempted. Maybe I'll pick one up soon.
I'm also tempted, but I refuse to buy one until they include the second analog nub built in to the system.
Has anybody successfully managed to connect to a Nintendo Zone yet?
My local Starbucks allegedly participates, but I didn't get anything from walking through there with my 3DS. Unless I had to stop and open up the Zone application?

You do. When you open up Nintendo Zone, you have to choose the option to search for one. If it finds one, I'm assuming that's where it downloads stuff.

There's a Nintendo Zone in the Walmart near my house, but I didn't realize it until after leaving, so although it had apparently downloaded some kind of content onto my 3DS (according to the message), I couldn't access it because I was out of range. I went back there earlier tonight, but of course, I completely forgot about it until now. Oh well, I was busy taking my Nintendog for walkies anyway...

I barely found this today, I had no clue. I have been finding that there are more 3DS owners lately mostly kids but street passes are street passes. Today on my lunch 2 of them asked me what game I had and I told them I had mario kart and we had some local 3 player racing its pretty fun when u get random people to play a good 10 minutes of racing or starfox dogfights

Some important information:

Metal Gear Solid 3D: Snake Eater - Q1
BTW, Circle Pad will be sold ONLY at GameStop.

fuck you Nintendo.
Bleh.

My guess, though, would be that it'll just be the actual accessory itself. Between RE: Revelations, Monster Hunter, and Metal Gear we're bound to get at least one bundle of it... which I'd hope is widely available.

Still, I disagree with the exclusivity of it, but at least we still have a while before a 'necessary' game comes out. Sure, RE will use it, but we've also been playing RE without a second stick since... uh, since forever. Now, something like Monster Hunter and Metal Gear are games where a second stick truly changes the way a game is played, so as long as they're widely available by then I don't really care.

Doesn't matter - I'm sure the redesign launching next year with the extra circle pad included in the design will be sold everywhere!

And my ambassador games will copy over...right? If not, I'm screwed, as usual. Nintendo makes it such a pain in the ass to replace anything.

no sense getting yourself worked up over something that has in no way been announced or hinted at.

Are they or are they not releasing an updated 3DS? I mean the current one has tiny screens, missing the second stick, and has sort of a weird controller layout (start/select are weird if nothing else).

It just seems like buying a second 3DS now would be a terrible idea, yet...well...I suppose if there is an updated model, we won't hear about it until after the holiday sales.

Every Nintendo handheld has had 3 revisions.

Gameboy, Gameboy Pocket, Gameboy Lite (JP only)
GBA, GBA SP, GB Micro
DS, DSL, DSi, DSIXL

A revised 3DS is inevitable, just a matter of when.

There will absolutely be an updated 3DS...eventually. Without getting into the obsessive details just know that Nintendo is good at keeping secrets and we won't start hearing rumours of specifics until after Q1 fiscal results are posted.

They have said that they are not going to, but only time will tell. As of right now, nothing has been announced or even hinted at.

So am I the only one that likes the screen size? I could do with the bottom screen being the same size as the upper one, but I don't want either to be much bigger than they already are... Not unless they're able to do so while retaining the current size of the machine itself. I didn't buy into the XL, and after seeing(& holding) one in person I'm glad I didn't. I don't like it. I don't like the cell phones with the huge screen because it makes them too big IMO, and I don't want a huge screen in my 3DS if it makes the console itself much bigger. I'm fine with that being an option, but I don't want it to become the norm because some of us still like our portable electronics to, well, still be portable.

I finally found a place that uses the nintendo zone feature at a barnes and nobles. All it is from what I seen is trivia questions, preview videos and maybe a demo of super mario 3d land to stream but thats it whats odd is u can save pictures of the screen while ur browsing nintendo zone.

You obviously forgot the Game Boy Color!
Screen size is fine. I'm just tired of hitting the power button all the time because i'm use to the start button being there. Not too bright.
Yep, the select and start buttons are a terrible misstep. They are hard and almost very difficult to see. Hopefully they'll get it right next time.
You obviously forgot the Game Boy Color!
Yeah, I wasn't sure where to place it since it was technically it's own platform with backwards compatibility, but there weren't a ton of GBC-only games that got released compared to the other handhelds. All the other ones listed were the same essential hardware/software, just redesigns.

You could maybe call the DSi an upgrade like the GBC since only some things ran on the DSi, but other than DSiWare I can't think of any retail releases that needed or benefited from it vs a DS Lite?

They will. The 3DS copy tool that they introduced in the latest firmware update is very thorough, apparently.

There are a handful of DSi only games that uses the camera and not playable on DS Lite

Rumored Ambassador GBA list (via kotaku)

F-Zero Maximum Velocity
Super Mario Advance 3
The Legend of Zelda: Minish Cap
Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones
Kirby and the Amazing Mirror
Mario Kart Advance
Mario vs. Donkey Kong
Metroid Fusion
Wario Land 4
Wario Ware, Inc. Mega Microgame$

Never played...
- F-Zero
- Fire Emblem
- Kirby
- Mario v. Donkey Kong
- Wario Ware
- Wario Land

Played a limited amount of...
- Mario Kart

If true, I'm quite pleased with that list.

Super Mario Advance 3 is a weird choice, though. Not necessarily a bad one, mind you, but strange. I could see avoiding the first and fourth because they'll inevitably be released as NES Classics, but I would've thought the Super Mario World one would've been a lock.

I have no objections, but boy I should have ebayed my GBA collection earlier...

Minish Cap? Minish Cap? Minish Cap?

huzzah!

(sad but true story: I've invested more time in my NES ambassador games than either of my two 3DS games. I've played through Adventure of Link as well as Metroid.)

Excellent. I never played Minish Cap or that Fire Emblem game. I'm pretty much looking forward to everything on that list, with the exception of F-Zero. I didn't play much of the GBA library.

You know, I had been really disappointed in 3DS. But after playing a Super Mario demo at a local GameStop and then downloading Pushmo, I'm excited again.

These Ambassador games certainly help. :D

Eh, I already own most of those, but still, that's cool.

I wish Nintendo would fix WPA2 support on the 3DS. Who knows, maybe a firmware update could do it, but it's a complete pain that I have to find an unencrypted access point to download stuff on that thing.

Look at this little lot:
F-Zero Maximum Velocity
Super Mario Advance 3
Zelda: The Minish Cap
Fire Emblem Seima no Kouseki
Kirby & the Amazing Mirror
Mario Kart Advance
Mario vs Donkey Kong
Metroid Fusion
Wario Land Advance
Made in Wario

Super Mario Advance 3 is Yoshi's Island - one of the best 2D platform games ever made. Mario Kart Advance is one of the best handheld racers ever made. Mario vs Donkey Kong is one of the best puzzle-platformers ever made (and arguably superior to the newer versions).

Metroid Fusion? Brilliant. Zelda: Minish Cap? Capcom's superb take on the Zelda franchise. And as for F-Zero... well, that game was enough to convince some people we knew to buy the GBA alone.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Very nice list and glad it'l be available Friday! Minish Cap is one of my all time favorite Zelda titles.
