You know, I was thinking about this yesterday actually and I'm not really sure if a 2nd circle pad being built in would work. I've always taken for granted that they'll make a new one and it'll include the 2nd circle pad but looking at the form factor of the 3DS and the DS line in general, I'm not sure a built in 2nd circle would fit.
Now obviously that means they would have to fundamentally redesign the 3DS then. Essentially that would require them to decide between making the right side slide pad either the highlight of the system by putting it above the face buttons that are already there or squeezing it underneath the face buttons. Either one of those situations isn't too preferred because I'm not sure about anyone else but using the directional pad on the left side is somewhat uncomfortable given how I have the bunch my thumb up, you'd end up with the same thing on the right side of the system. Essentially you'd have to choose between right slide pad games and face games, because depending on which one is put on top on the right side, the other type of games are going to be uncomfortable to play.
Given how sales have taken off at the end of the year and companies are presumably diving into developing 3DS now that regular DS has tailored off, what do they do? Plan for it or without it? I mean it wouldn't be the first time a fundamental system function is added after the fact but it would be the first time with a portable system. The most high profile example I can think of is the original dual shock with analog controls for the original playstation.
That's not even counting the number of Nintendo redesigns that have taken things away from a system. DSi losing backward compatibility, Wii losing backward compatibility, Gamecube losing the digital output, etc. At this point maybe I'm just repeating everything that's been said for the last 6 months but eh, just felt like getting some thought out.
I've stayed out of the "OMG we have to have a second analog pad" debate because I didn't feel like getting shouted down, but I don't see where the second analog pad would go either. Making the 3DS bigger would not make it better for a lot of people who really do use it as a portable device, and many (most?) games just don't need it. I haven't been able to figure out why people have been yelling about it so much.
