Nintendo 3DS - General Discussion Thread

It was cool to see the Phantom Menace trailer in 3D but since the movie wasnt recorded in 3D it looked pretty flat...like cutouts.
Just a heads-up....today's the last day (12/30/11) for filling out the Post-Play surveys (Club Nintendo) for the 10 free NES game downloads you recieved for being a 3DS Ambassador. Go get 'em 100 Club Nintendo coins now, if you haven't already!
I JUST joined Club Nintendo and I bought the system at launch. How do I do this?
Has anyone else developed a 3DS hand-cramp? It seems the pressure required for the analog stick is slightly different than other systems I've used, and I've got a rather unpleasant pain in my palm below my thumb. A Google search shows there are others who have had problems and some of those hand-grip things seem to help, although I think that would hurt the portability of the system...
I have the Nerf Armor on my 3DS and it works wonders for larger hands/countering hand cramps. I highly suggest it. Nerf Armor also add a tiny bit of hinge support as well.

Sorry to say this but it's too late for that. You had to link your 3DS account to your Club Nintendo account via settings in the eShop app BEFORE the official price-drop date (back in late Aug or early Sept, I forget).

I think he is just refering to the Club Nintendo points which requires linking the 3DS. Either way, at this point, it is too late.

As for getting ambassador status, IIRC, all we needed to do was visit the eShop once before the deadline.

call nintendo. i got a preowned 3DS from a local trade. The guy never used the eshop before the date, but nintendo had no problem adding my console to the list of ambassadors. As long as you are friendly, they are usually willing to work it out.

edit:
does anyone else's console leave prints on the screen from the touchpad below. Its driving me nuts that I cant seem to wipe them clean.

So why do mine say they expire April 21 rather than today?

I have the hori screen protectors on my red 3ds. I get marks on the top screen pretty often, but at least it's just on the screen protector.

I realized that screen protectors are a waste of money. Whether the scratches are on your screen or on your protector, you're still going to see scratches, so I don't see the benefit. I guess if you plan on reselling the thing later on down the road.

isn't that kinda like saying it's a waste to have sheets on your bed?

the screen protectors can easily be switched out whenever they get too scratched up

Honestly I never used a screen protector for any of my portables before until now. I have the Hori protector and it is pretty nice.

I look at it like this, you still see the scratches obviously either way but if they are on the screen it is permanent. Once my protector gets a few annoying scratches I will peel it off and slap a fresh one on and be scratch free which is something you can't do without a protector.

I also do not plan to ever resell my 3ds, I am a hoarder.

We gave our kids a 3DS for xmas and of course I tried it. I like it a lot including the 3D, with the exception that it's really too small for my hands. After only one cup (or whatever it's called) of MK7, my fingers hurt. So while I'd like one, I think I'll wait for an XL model. For my kids it's perfect, though.

Also, I'm really, really bummed that MK7 and a bunch of other games seem to only have one save. Is there a way around that? Sucks that I can't make my own save in MK7.

it's no guarantee, but you can check the SD card to see if the game makes it's saves on there.. if it does, buy a cheap little sd card and swap yours in when you want to play your game.

if the game saves on the cart, not sure what you can do about that unfortunately :whistle2:/

I still have 2 systems unopened from Target the week before Christmas (the 2 for $250 deal) but no games to play yet. I thought I was going to keep one but now I'm thinking of just returning them and waiting for the redesign like I originally planned. I don't know...

It save on the cart and sd card.

Ah. I think I have a spare SD card somewhere. I'll scrounge it up - thanks!

regarding the circle pad pro or whatever it's called - that does look comfier... except for the fact that the ABCD buttons are way over from the edge. I think that's going to be uncomfortable as well for anything other than dual-stick games. Hopefully I can try one out in store, though, and see how well it works.

It's still 3 months before we can even expect rumours about the new system to start dropping. Even if there is one coming next year, it won't be available for purchase until the second half of the year.

Same rule always goes. If there aren't five games you want to play now then pass. But then again those new Mario games are just so sweet....:D

I'm guessing this is true for Zelda 3d as well? The game saving to the cart, I mean? I know that Nintendogs saves to the cart. I traded my original zelda 3d cart to save money on the zelda bundle. I'm guessing I'll have to replay ocarina to get access to the master quest and boss modes again. Not that I have a problem with that...well, not much of a problem...

I am pretty sure every 3DS game use the cart itself for game save. Some might use SD card for additional stuff.

This is true, I've never seen any Nintendo portable system that didn't have the saves directly on the cart(even if having memory cards in portables is a relatively newer trend). It's not too big of a deal though, as most of the games where you'd really want there to be multiple save slots do indeed have them.

It would be great to have the option to save to the SD card, as I'd love to not have my saves live and die with the card it was originally created on.

I probably have more problem with memory card than any Nintendo cart since GBA

There's no reason that having the option for people that would like to back-up saves would hurt anybody else.

edit: My bad. Should be noted that a clearer translation reveals this to be pure speculation. Keep calm and carry on.

fuck ME

Well, I guess 'the Nintendo precedent' really went flying out the window with the circle pad. I was so good at predicting stuff until Yamauchi retired but now I'm just guessin.

This was posted on GAF earlier. Basically very strong rumours of a 3DS lite from Nikkei Trendy (NOT Nikkei proper but same parent company). Thinner with better battery life.

Thinner? Not sure I like the sound of that. Bigger screens and better battery life would be welcome additions, but I wouldn't mind a bit more bulk to the system.

Well, since I can't read Japanese this may be totally off base, but... if there's no indication of a second stick, I'm okay with the original.

To me, the stick is what makes any revision. Anything else is stuff I'm fairly indifferent to. I have no real qualms with the 3DS in its current state, barring the second stick thing.

Agreed. I thought for sure there would be a second stick added in but....this is just the first rumour with any teeth. We'll see soon enough.

What do you know, if those rumors end up being true my last reservations about buying the Zelda 3DS are gone. I'm glad I got in on it when I did (and thank god they seem to have fixed the floppy hinge).

I think I might have the floppy hinge problem. The top half moves slightly weather it be open or closed. I really enjoy playing my 3DS, I'm almost done completing all the mirror cups on mario kart 7 just 2 more and I started playing Final Fantasy the 4 heros of light on it. I am okay with the DS backwards compatibility and though the faded colors are dull at least its a nice extra since I missed a lot of good DS titles. I have notice that wifi doesnt work at all on DS games on 3DS is there a way around this or not? I was thinking bout picking up pokemon black

any word on them fixing the thing where the console SCRATCHES ITSELF....kinda frustrating to have to put a cloth in between the screens to keep this from getting worse.

If that rumor is true... 3DSlite? Really? It doesn't need to be any thinner, it's already thinner than a DSlite for crying out loud! I think they're trying to copy what happened when the DS exploded last time, but a lite version isn't going to work again... It's already the perfect size(perhaps a bit too thin), do they want me to be able to use it as a toothpick too, or something? Oh Nintendo... Oh well, at least I have no qualms with this being the "superior" version, and I won't be tempted to upgrade at all.

Do you have screen protectors on? I still get those 'scratch marks' but they wipe away with a microfiber cloth.

Since the lower screen has small creases between it and the system, I think that oils from our fingers get trapped in them and when the lid is closed they wipe against the top screen. At least that is what I'm discovering with my system.

I don't know why people think they are going to redesign.

It is only used for certain games, keeping it detachable is almost a must, it will make playing games that won't require it very awkward and not comfortable at all.

The article was just speculation. It was just the magazine wondering why they haven't heard any rumors about a redesign. Then they go on to make educated guesses about what a redesign would have.

I dont have the protectors because i bought mine used and it was already affected. I have tried my best to clean the screen with fluid and cloths, but it doesnt seem to go away. The hinge on mine is very slightly loose, and it think that it can slide back and forth very slightly when its closed, thus the scratches. They really arent that bad, but theyve been driving me nuts lately.

Im gonna try a microfiber, see what happens.

Sweet I'll save my money then. Looking forward to playing that!

can someone give me a quick summary about the nintendo coins and how/when they expire? last year my a chunk of my points expired but nintendo was nice enough to send me a desk calender. I'm thinking I don't want another calender or whatever prize they are awarding to ppl who don't keep track of their coins...so I'll see if I have enough to buy some of the games you can buy with coins.

thanks nahmsayin?

You know, I was thinking about this yesterday actually and I'm not really sure if a 2nd circle pad being built in would work. I've always taken for granted that they'll make a new one and it'll include the 2nd circle pad but looking at the form factor of the 3DS and the DS line in general, I'm not sure a built in 2nd circle would fit.

Now obviously that means they would have to fundamentally redesign the 3DS then. Essentially that would require them to decide between making the right side slide pad either the highlight of the system by putting it above the face buttons that are already there or squeezing it underneath the face buttons. Either one of those situations isn't too preferred because I'm not sure about anyone else but using the directional pad on the left side is somewhat uncomfortable given how I have the bunch my thumb up, you'd end up with the same thing on the right side of the system. Essentially you'd have to choose between right slide pad games and face games, because depending on which one is put on top on the right side, the other type of games are going to be uncomfortable to play.

Given how sales have taken off at the end of the year and companies are presumably diving into developing 3DS now that regular DS has tailored off, what do they do? Plan for it or without it? I mean it wouldn't be the first time a fundamental system function is added after the fact but it would be the first time with a portable system. The most high profile example I can think of is the original dual shock with analog controls for the original playstation.

That's not even counting the number of Nintendo redesigns that have taken things away from a system. DSi losing backward compatibility, Wii losing backward compatibility, Gamecube losing the digital output, etc. At this point maybe I'm just repeating everything that's been said for the last 6 months but eh, just felt like getting some thought out.

I've stayed out of the "OMG we have to have a second analog pad" debate because I didn't feel like getting shouted down, but I don't see where the second analog pad would go either. Making the 3DS bigger would not make it better for a lot of people who really do use it as a portable device, and many (most?) games just don't need it. I haven't been able to figure out why people have been yelling about it so much.
