After reading nightc1's post... I wrote mine about Octopath and XC2, and then I went to the Nintnedo website to look at Shining Resonance Refrain.

I saw that it had a Demo available, and I clicked on it and a popup said it would download to my system if available.. I get home and it's installed on my Switch!

When did Nintendo implement that? I know I rarely go to their website outside of the house, and always brown the eShop on the Switch.

The instant download after purchase? That's been around for a while now. Probably before the Switch released since it was a nice reason to use the webstore for 3DS and Wii U purchases.

On the flip side I preordered Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Torna. No question, that game will be worth my money and more importantly, my time. Overall it was interesting to game so much and try so many games out (about a dozen games).

Octopath Traveller, I played through an hour and a half with the Cleric. Overall the character was kind of likable but the writing for her is really unbelievably one dimensional. Like being taken in at 5 years old or something and she calls the man that raised her "your excellency" when he says "my daughter" and she just can't accept after all these years that she's a real family member. Just weird writing. Overall in that time spent with the game I beat the first boss at the well/fire/spring thing and then finished the story to the point that she was leaving to do her journey. That's it. 80% talking in a very slow text bubble to text bubble with a pause between and 20% actual game. Walking around the game seems super linear with it's paths to follow and areas seem not well developed. Overall, I was still a bit on the fence until later when I played such an epic game that made Octopath Traveller a waste of my time.

Captain Toad got some attention, but the completionist in me hated not being able to get any of the speed run scores. I cancelled my preorder of that. It wasn't really that fun and I think I'm done with platformer puzzlers outside of maybe going back to a Wario Land or something classic. It'll take something really fantastic to win me back over to the genre. Still, I have an unopened copy of the WiiU version with Amiibo because it was super cheap on Amazon and I liked the Captain Toad levels in Super Mario 3D Word... so it's not like I needed it anyway. Of course now i'll probably throw my Captain Toad WiiU on the "need to sell" shelf.

Shining Resonance Refrain had a fairly interesting story, but the text is thick and the action is kind of boring. This is the game that made me realize maybe I'm just not into RPG's anymore. Still I love the whole dragon come to life stuff ... just not that interested in trudging through that gameplay for it. Thankfully I never got as far as to preorder it.

I fired up my copy of Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (Retail) after playing a bunch of other demos. My goodness that had the most production quality that I've seen in an RPG in a long time. So much voice acting (which I loved) and it flowed. No break every sentence like Octopath and Shining. It was more like an anime in the conversations including some actual lip movements. The characters are all interesting. There is a lot of dept to the writing and the game is just, brilliant. Overall this game is so good I preordered the prequel that comes with the Season Pass and I ended up dumping 9 amazing hours of my life into it (just to the point of finishing Chapter 2). I love how open the world is and how interesting the side missions are. It feels like an actual game universe.
I played a bunch of other demos before starting Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Pretty much everything on eshop that seemed interesting to me. Nothing that made me spend money and all of which I deleted when done. One game, Disgaea 5 Complete, I already bought it (because I enjoyed the first game so much and have the others on PSN for my Vita). It's a series (including most of the spinoffs) that I've intended to dig deep into at some point. After playing the demo of 5, I'm pretty sure I'm just not that interested. It's not bad, by any means, I'm just not feeling the modern art and I know what it takes to play one of these games and I don't think it would be worth my time. I think I'll be better off letting go of that experience. I still have all those Yakuza games on PS3/PS4 to play and plenty of other stuff to get through that I'm super hyped to play. So Disgae just has to be sacrificed. I'll be more picky in the future.

SO, as far as Switch goes, I've re-evaluated my entire library and have evaluated most everything with a demo. I did download the Lost Sphere demo today, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to hate it. Still, I like to give games a chance to wow me. Before playing Xenoblade C2, I was thinking of maybe just letting it go before getting started because I'm finding myself less of a gamer these days... but I'm so glad I gave it a chance and took advantage of that pre-order prime discount. It's reignited my love for gaming... but it's also set the bar hella high for anything else I'll be playing.

Sadly I feel like I agree on Octopath. I had really been looking forward to this and the 3 hour demo had me excited initially but that soon got soured by the incomplete voice acting and the super linear maps. After just finishing Persona 5, I’ll probably finish up some non-rpgs but you put xenoblade on my list. I think I had pushed it off due to the wonky videos on eshop and it being too big to pick up but pretty soon I’ll be looking for another deep game.
 
Octopath traveler seems fantastic. I rarely play a long demo because I feel like I'm going to have to rework but getting to transfer your save to the full retail version is great. I don't consider myself really the target as I don't have a lot of love for older game designs (having lived through those generations) but Octopath updates the whole idea of 16-bit jrpg so well I may actually finish it if it really is an 70+ hour campaign.

 
I am still so on-the-fence for Octopath...I don't really know what to think. I might wait for a sale, especially with how much is in my backlog right now.

Really excited to dig into Ys 8 finally today. I waited for the Switch release to play (much like with Hollow Knight) for the on-to-go possibilities as I travel a lot. Also will be downloading Lumines - seems like the perfect game for flights.

Ys 8 is a great time. Enjoy! Plus, this version should have a better translation that the ps4 version, if I’m not mistaken.
 
I was surprised at how much I liked the original Octopath demo. Haven't played the new one, but I wasn't expecting some of these negative impressions.

I preordered Octopath after playing the second demo. I actually did the same thing after playing the Ys VIII demo, so kudos for quality demos.

It needs to get patched apparently(for translation and performance issues), and three are planned already. Don't think I caught when Switch is getting them.

 
 I feel like someone that loved Golden Sun (not me) might also love Octopath Traveler.  Both are heavy on the long text bubble conversations, both have fairly linear path based game worlds, both have some pretty graphics, and then there's the random battles.

Ys 8, I'd like some feedback on it.  It's too bad there wasn't a demo for the switch version.. I may try the one on PSN.  I opted out of the prime discount preorder because as interesting as it looks it just didn't tick enough boxes for a release day purchase at that price.  I believe, like past Ys games, it'll be discounted heavily over the next year or so and I'll probably grab it when it gets close to $20.

After researching the rest of the games slated for the year for the Switch, I preordered Tales of Vesperia.  Everything I've seen on that screams that it has a great story, super memorable characters, an open world (with actual exploration), and it's going to be my kind of game.

I'm on the fence for The World Ends with You Final Remix.  I enjoyed the original release on DS (which I still own)... but I have yet to really go back and replay it after all these years so it might be a waste of my money.  The Japanese version of TWEWY:FR got a release date today for September 27th.  I think the NA version isn't too far behind.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is $50.48 on Amazon.com and Walmart.com (sold by walmart) new also... though I'd go for that gamefly deal for $40 with free shipping (and probably no tax).  Yeah, definitely that.  Just remember there's an update you want to install before playing it.

Not sure if anyone cares, but Penguin Wars has been delayed again to sometime the end of July. It’s a goofy game, but I have the original game boy game it’s based off of, and 9yr old me back in 92 played the shit out of it.

I think I only ever got 8-10 gameboy games when I was kid and this was definitely the most obscure one. I remember regularly beating it with every character. One time I somehow ran into a kid with a copy and it was so much fun. Preordered this right way and can't way to play.

As others have said the games don't go on sale often, especially digitally. They do tend to hit around $20-$25 for physical copies occasionally, but that's the cheapest I usually see. I wouldn't mind getting Ultra Moon for $25 myself, but I am honestly a little burnt out on Pokemon games myself.

I have the PS4 edition and can say its a lot of fun, but I felt the platforming itself was not that precise and it kinda pissed me off.

The gimmick is that you are one of a random lot of 88 heroes and you just keep plowing ahead trying to make it to the end, one death equals game over for that hero. Its a ton of fun to see the different 'powers' of each hero, some will make beating the level a breeze, others are clearly just joke characters.

Even though its not a game that takes itself that seriously I found the overall platforming mechanics to be lacking, jumping and movement just seemed not as precise as I would have liked and I ended up just putting it aside. Its a fun game though if you're in the right mindset and I think the Switch version is expanded to have more heroes so it could be even better.

Ugh. I have been waiting on a sale forever for Bomberman but seriously?? $30 still seems pretty steep given I have so many amazing multiplayer indies that I play locally with friends that were way cheaper and are super fun.

Maybe once a year and if anything, digitally they only shave like $2 off the gameboy games and maybe $5 off the more current ones. Might as well just buy them physical bruh. Every few months they're like $10-15 off.
