Very excited for the Nintendo Classic since I don't own any N consoles and I'd love to play Mario with my wife. But:

1. Anyone see a preorder for the Nintendo classic?

2. I really wish this had a wireless controller option.

Nothing on sale that I want, but I'm definitely getting that classic NES (I currently have the top loader with the dog bone controller).

I never played the original Final Fantasy, Super C, or Tecmo Bowl (to name a few) so I'm looking forward to this collection.

Hadn't played my Wii u in a few months and started Steamworld Dig (again, already beat it on 3ds). And the game is still a lot of fun.

So, is Steamworld Heist similar or is it a completely different game?

Hadn't played Heist, but from what I remember it's a strategy game of some sort; completely different from Dig.

SteamWorld Heist is a strategy RPG, like a 2D XCOM.

So, I bought a New 3DS XL. It's in the mail, along with a 32GB micro card with adapter. Currently have a 32GB card in my original 3DS.

Looking for advice on the system transfer:

  • Should I copy the contents of my original card to PC first, do the system transfer with the new card in the new 3ds, then copy the contents from the PC to the new card afterwards? Or copy the contents to the new card, put it in the new 3ds, then transfer? Or...?
  • Should I do the transfer with the original card in the new 3ds first, then do all the new card / copying afterward?
  • Does it ask to copy the contents wirelessly during the process, and then just say no and do it manually yourself (see both above)?
  • Should I backup the DSiWare to my card before I start the process?

The few things I have read were kinda vague on the exact process and would like to do the transfer with as little muss, copying data over the air, and/or re-downloading games as possible. Would also like to know of any gotchas or issues that may arise. Any insight would be much appreciated.

Honestly the process is "vague" to say the least. I've done it about 5 times so far, and each time I'm just as confused as the first time.

The best I can recommend is the PC transfer route, as if you do everything over Wi-Fi, it can take a day or more to complete.

There's a tutorial video out there that is direct from "N", and it's probably best to watch that, before you do the process, just so you can get an idea of what it takes. If that one doesn't seem to informative, look for other videos from users, as they may explain better than "N" does.

Good Luck!

All you have to do is copy the entire contents of your SD card to your PC. This clones everything you have stored on your system, including games, game saves, and download tickets (encrypted files used to verify your ownership of the games on your system). Transfer that to your N3DSXL, and you'll have everything you had on your previous system. I've done this four times before, and it's always been that simple.

If that doesn't work for some reason on firmware 11 and newer, then you'll still have the ability to do the other transfer. It just takes longer.

Also, 7th Dragon III: Code VFD is going for $33.63 used (very good) on Amazon. People must have beaten their preorders and traded them in already (trades in for $19). It's a fun little dungeon-crawler, but it doesn't have 3D.

Well Tokyo Mirage is super great. Except the forced bits of the UI that are on the gamepad. So I have to keep it nearby which is a bit annoying but thankfully the shell I have for it has a kick stand. More annoying is that when it decides it's time to run out of juice that decides when it's time for me to save when I would like to keep playing.
Luckily for me I have a power outlet near my couch & the default cord reaches. You can also buy an extended USB cable if your Wii U is close enough to you. I see them at GS, not sure about elsewhere.

It just takes longer.

...
Yeah, but the exact steps of when the copy happens is what all descriptions I have read so far omit.

So my guess is:

  • Backup DSiWare games to SD Card.
  • Copy its content to PC, and put back in old 3ds.
  • New micro card in new 3ds.
  • Run transfer system app on new 3ds.
  • Say "No" if option comes up to copy data.
  • Take out micro card, and copy backed up data onto it.
  • Put micro back in new 3ds.
  • Move DSiWare from card into system memory.
  • Enjoy!

Is that the correct steps, including how to handle the DSiWare? Can I copy the data onto the micro card and put it into the new 3ds BEFORE the transfer process (thereby skipping having to take out the micro card an extra time)?

Transfer from the old 3DS to the new 3DS is the simplest option so it transfers everything over by itself. No copying needed.

In prep I counted and have 75 games/apps on my system to transfer. Many DSiWare (had to offload one already) and at least 5 of the 75 are full size retail games installed. I know the process is probably simpler, but won't this take quite a bit of time? More chance for a power outage to bork it up?

Just trying to gather all the info I can before I start so I can decide which is the best route.

Also, 7th Dragon III: Code VFD is going for $33.63 used (very good) on Amazon. People must have beaten their preorders and traded them in already (trades in for $19). It's a fun little dungeon-crawler, but it doesn't have 3D.
Dang. I was gonna buy this one digitally because I thought it was going to rival the length/replayability of the Etrian games. Now all I see lately is people saying how short/easy it is compared to those. Kinda glad I waited, guess I'll just wait for a used copy to pop up at Gamestop.

If it's anything like regular 3DS > regular 3DS, then that's the correct order. At the very least, you can't transfer DSiWare over to the SD card until you start the transfer process, so you can't do that ahead of time, but IIRC the PC method will let you leave the new micro SD out of the machine until you transfer the files over to it, so you wouldn't need to put it in the New 3DS until the end.

Honestly, I just did my new MH one from the Poke one.. I've got all the games going all the way back to Ambassador.  Minus the stupid hiccup where it doesn't wanna start (and you type your password in like 5 times) it took a grand total of 30 minutes.  Now I have to wait a week to setup the kids new Poke 3DS :)  None of this messing around crap.  You say move.. at the end you turn it over, transfer memory card and DONE.  I've done it this way for every 3DS change since the first XL.

It maybe takes an hour or two, but that's it. Unless you're subject to frequent power outages, I don't know why that would be an issue.

So I can't backup the DSiWare to the SD card on the old 3ds before starting the transfer process, then when done reload the DSiWare from the micro card to the new 3ds? I already have had to backup one to the SD card because I ran out of DSi memory. If that doesn't work then I would have to re-download that game.

Not frequent power outages. But recently I was downloading a game to my PS TV and in the middle of it had a brief power blip and the PS TV went off. The download had to be restarted but I lost about a gig of space on the PS TV. I can't do the database reset on it to recover that space or I will lose the PS Mobile games that are on there, including Tokyo Jungle Mobile which I definitively don't want to lose. But thinking about it, my router is on a battery backup so I should be OK there. Its more that the 3ds connects using 802.11g speed which is slow as molasses.

As far as I know, no to the first, but yes to the second. The DSiWare gets backed up to the SD card as part of the process, but if its already on there from a previous transfer or something and you don't copy it to the SD during the transfer, the New 3DS may recognize and reinstall it anyway. Or it might not. You'll still have the license so you can re-download it just fine, so I don't know what the prob--

Pfft. I grew up in the days of dial-up, boy. You don't know what slow internet really means.

I'm assuming if I pre-backup before I do the transfer process, I can then just copy contents thru the PC then when its all over, reload the DSiWare from the copied backup. I guess I'll find out soon enuff.

I am probably older then most here.

Yeah, that is a Sears licensed Atari Pong system. I think it had a hockey mode too.

Yeah same boat. We had Mattel Baseball, my uncle had Mattel Football. I remember thinking Football was actually quite good. I have a pocket size version of it now.

I highly recommend having everything backed up on your PC in case something ever happens to your SD card. I'm not sure what the automation process for System Transfer entails, but if it transfers internal NAND memory like TWL keyslots and extdata, then your workflow sounds good.

I apologize for derailing the thread a bit, but it was somewhat dead here today anyway. And I appreciate the advice and nostalgia.

Thanks.

I just wish I didn't have to use it at all when it's just a glorified menu and map.

It's certainly not as difficult as an EO game. But honestly I think it's one of the best JRPG games to come out on the 3ds this year. It stands up well against FE and BS. The combat system is solid, and the character designs(and voices) are so great that I ended up doubling up on a few classes.

The DLC is supposed to be free for the first week of release.

I don't know if you guys have noticed the great sale on Curve Digital games on the eshop. They all seem to be a dollar. Lone Survivor, The Swapper, Thomas Was Alone, Titan Attacks!, OlliOlli, Nova-111, and Pumped BMX +.

The best part of this is you get the gold points based on the original price. Thomas Was Alone, The Swapper and Lone Survivor's original prices are above 10 dollars so you get 20 gold coins each while the rest you earn 10.

So if you wanted to buy any of the games that are available in the eshop and available as a reward in mynintendo it would actually be cheaper to buy these games and redeem the gold coins than buy the game outright.  For example Super Mario Kart is 60 gold coins or 7.99. So essentially you could buy the three 20 point games and you'd be getting it for 3 dollars plus three other decent games (I love Thomas Was Alone). So a really good deal.

I've recently been craving to play on of those Trials-esque flash games. Looks like BMX+ will fulfill that for a dollar. Even if it's not great, I'll get a dollar's worth out.

I'll plug OlliOlli for anyone who hasn't gotten it already. A very fun 2D skateboard game that is absolutely worth a dollar.

Damn for a buck each these are worth it just for the coins. I got 20 gold coins for The Swapper which gave me just enough to get the 30% off fire emblem reward.  Though looking at the reviews, The Swapper is a crazy bargain for a dollar in its own right.

Wonder if another humble bundle for 3ds/Wii U is on the horizon. Might pass on these for now.
Considering I've seen like one Nintendo humble bundle ever and these games are a buck each I'd say you might better bite the bullet now if any of these titles appeal to you.
