Found out that my New 3DS XL has a busted L button thanks to Metroid: Samus Returns, as it barely registers an input after several presses and that ability to plant your feet to shoot all around you seems like an important thing to be able to do. There are no remapping options and they don't mirror shoulder button actions on the ZL/ZR buttons, so there's no way to get around that other than buying another New 3DS XL. I'm not sure if there's a specific game that caused the issue, so it may just be because the shoulder buttons are poorly made like the 3DS in general.
Didn't you blow out your R button on Animal Crossing on your old one? Or was that the B button? :p I hope compressed air fixes it for you. I don't know how crap gets stuck under there, but somehow, it seems to. I agree, they are not very well made. Plastic junk.

If you do decide to buy a new one, and want to go the XL route, I recommend the new 2DS XL(if you don't mind losing the 3D). It's really nice, light, and comfortable to hold. NoA online store is also offering refurbished on the standard N3DS, which I personally prefer to the XL, but that's a personal preference for sure.

BTW, has anyone here gotten any of those yet? I was wondering if they are like the refurb Wii U, in that it's pretty much new, just maybe missing the branded packaging?
It came in a generic box with a sticker. Other than that it looked new and there was even a piece of foam inserted to keep the screens from touching.

I've actually been checking their site pretty regularly, as I wan't to get 1 or 2 back ups, as the Ebay prices got crazy, and the refurb stuff is normally like new, so I'm trying to save up and grab one white and one black for future uses. So when I start to see some go out of stock, I'll have to grab at least one. Me, my wife & son all have that model, and where I doubt mine would ever break, **** happens, so good to be prepared.

EDIT: You may also want to look in to CFW for the 3DS with the broken button, as there may be a way to assign buttons, then you could just by pass the broke one, and use the other. But that may not be workable in game(in regards to hand position), or you may be against CFW, but just a suggestion.
I bought a refurb Zelda 3DS XL from the Nintendo store website and it came in a generic white box. Took it out of the packaging and cannot tell that it is a refurb, looks brand new.

I figured as much, good to get a confirmation though. Even if I can't get one of each color before they are all gone, I'll for sure at least try and get one. At $125, for pretty much a new system, I can't pass that up especially with how much I like this model.

The Nintendo refurbs look and feel like brand new units. You just don't get the normal Nintendo box though.
Yeah, I actually got the white 32GB Wii U from them awhile back, and I knew before hand what to expect. I figured it would be the same across all of their refurbs on their shop, but I just wanted some piece of mind by actually hearing from someone who had gotten one of those N3DS models from them.

Any thoughts on Terraria for $10?
I bought the physical for my son at that price a few months back, and it was one of his most played titles, he loved it. I've also seen others comment on the Vita version as well, and it's seems to be a really cool title and sell reviewed. You could probably do a lot worse with $10.

So now that I have a switch I've been tempted to pick up Breath of the wild even though I own it on WiiU. Just the thought of it being truly portable compared to the short range of the WiiU tablet is tempting enough. I never progressed far into the game, I've only completed one divine beast and just goofed around, and then I got distracted by Persona 5.

So the point of my rambling is this: should I trade in my WiiU copy or hang on to it considering how quickly WiiU discs go out of print? Would it be worth something to some niche group of gamers who will remember the WiiU long after Nintendo has swept it under the rug?

I've been playing it on the Wii U actually, and it's just not a really good game, I'm sorry to say. I mean there's a lot there to like, but there's also a lot there to not like, and I think the bad outweighs the good.

If either version goes up in value, it will for sure be the Wii U version, as that will have a way lower run than the NS did. Maybe if you play it on the go, you may spend more time with it, so the NS version may help you to play it more. For me, it's a chore each and every time I put it on, as it's just very boring most of the time.

The NS version runs better as well, and while I have had some pretty big hiccups on the Wii U, it's still a very well made game, even with some performance issues. I personally wouldn't bother with the NS version if you have the Wii U, as I just don't see much difference. But if taking the game on the go is a big appeal, that may be enough for you.

If it is dust in the shoulder buttons, which is pretty common, you could try compressed air or just put it up to your mouth and blow like hell (make sure to dry out your mouth first so you don't spit into it).

If that doesn't work you could try taking it apart to see if you can see the problem. I haven't taken apart a New 3DS, but I have done my OG a few times and it's not terribly complicated.
Surprisingly, this mostly solved the issue. Just blew into whatever little space there is around the L button and it's mostly working now. Who knew the NES blowing technique still worked on their newer devices in 2017? Thanks for the suggestion.

Didn't you blow out your R button on Animal Crossing on your old one? Or was that the B button? :p I hope compressed air fixes it for you. I don't know how crap gets stuck under there, but somehow, it seems to. I agree, they are not very well made. Plastic junk.
It was the B button from skipping so many useless dialog boxes in Animal Crossing New Leaf because they don't have auto-forward features for its text boxes like many modern JRPGs and such. Metroid also has this issue, but luckily has less dialog/text boxes to cause issues.

I thought about the New 2DS XL, but the color options are terrible. I'm not a fan of the two-tone designs they've announced so far, as I'd prefer a solid-colored design with black like the previous 3DS models offered.

Woo! So glad that fixed it! I'm sure I've said before that Mario Kart and Street Fighter II blew out the R button on my SNES controllers.

All of this made me buy, and try, some compressed air on my fancy Samsung robot vacuum that was malfunctioning. It has a "bumper" too, and just like Frisky's L button, there must have been something stuck under there. It's back to serving me without complaint. I'm glad, cause my floors were getting kind of bitty.

Yeah I had the same problem. I switched over to tapping the touch screen to advance through those dialogue boxes in order to save wear on my B button.

Yeah, I agree with you there, the color options suck(and not in a good way)!

I actually like the interior color of the two new Pokemon models, but the outside branding is terrible, as I don't play or like Pokemon. If I ever wanted an XL again, I would for sure still go with that unit, as it's just to comfy. So I would have to force myself to pick a color and live with it.

Lucky for me, I love the standard N3DS, so hopefully I never have a need to get either of the other current system options.

I was also disappointed with Breath of the Wild. I'm even considering selling my Switch copy it while it still has value (I only paid $40 for it new). I'm worried about the future direction of the series given how popular open world games are these days.

Yeah, I honestly don't know where they may go from here. I've been playing BotW since about a month after release, and I don't think I'm anywhere near the end. The further I go, the less I want to play. The story is just garbage, the enemies are beyond repetitive, and the game overall just lacks focus. I keep playing, as I'm waiting to reach the level of all those 10/10 reviews I saw, and I'm just not seeing it. I've gotten 10x more enjoyment from probably each handheld game, and that's the Gods honest truth.

I will say each new 3D Zelda is always a new game all it's own. Even with MM using the engine from OoT, they couldn't have been two more completely different types of games. So that's the one place where I have hope maybe the next game will be better, but with how slow "N" makes those games, we will be lucky to see another NS game before the system is done.

The game improved for me a bit after the opening hours, but it never even reached close to 10 status. It's rare that I encounter someone who isn't raving about BotW, but I do know a couple diehard Nintendo fans who I had previously never heard criticize the company that weren't happy with.it. I also got more enjoyment from the handheld games, especially Link's Awakening. Here's hoping that's the case and the next one will be quite a bit different.

Link's Awakening is probably my favorite Zelda title, with the two Capcom GB color titles, and Link to the Past rounding out the top 4. These are the only titles I've ever played to completion more than once, with Links Awakening holding top spot for most plays. Back then, "N" did so much, with so little, as did Square with FF. FF6, is probably the high water mark for me with the series, as it had no FMV, or digital orchestrated soundtrack, and there is so much being done, that 7-15 just lacks(I haven't played them all, but the ones I did weren't very good when compared to older titles). Although the games are HUGE in there scope, same as BotW I suppose.

For me, BotW picked up after the early goings as well, once I realized it was just one HUGE tutorial, and after that, the true world was now open to explore. Shortly after that, I was back to the boredom again. The world is amazing, as I think the title was a perfect choice, as each time I play, I'm amazed at how beautiful the whole world is, it's just not very entertaining.

The only other Zelda title that left me this flat was Wind Waker, another title that to this day, is probably one of the best looking video games ever made, and as a Disney art project, I would give it top honors, as a Zelda game, more boredom. The only reason I finished that title, was due to how short it was(and how amazing it looked), but the second half was a forced effort for sure.

"N" is due to have an original 2D/2.5D title, as the last one was a remake of sorts, so I look forward to that, as it will take less time to produced than a full on 3D title. Since "N" has combined their R&D dept, all in to one, no telling what we may get, or when we may see it. But much like Metroid just came out for the 3DS, as a way to tide fans over waiting on Prime 4, I think we could see a smaller Zelda title that would do the same before the next big 3D title comes along.

EDIT: I guess a Links Awakening remake could be good, if done properly, so that could be cool. But hopefully it's a new title built from the ground up.

I feel like Breath of the wild would be even better if Nintendo had achievements/trophies on their systems. Then they could have had some extra challenges and goals built into it. Otherwise it's just four "dungeons" and defeat ganon. I mean it's fun to explore, but almost all of the Zelda games have had a linear structure. So to be tossed into an open world game it's kind of like, "uhhh now what? Guess I'll climb that rock to have a look around, nevermind, it's raining again"

I hear you. I thoroughly enjoyed BoTW, put nearly 100 hours into it. And yep, if there was "stamps" tied to the system I would probably still be playing. I did pick up the season pass and will go back when all the DLC is released. With that said I understand some folks criticism of the open world, compared to some other similarly designed games it can be a bit...slow.

This was the biggest issue, as having a HUGE world was good I suppose, and I'm guessing they made it that way because they could, but for me, the game would have been better served with a more set path, and things to do along that path. I honestly never once, ever asked why the Zelda world was never any bigger, but I guess some did, and that's why we got an open world(excuse me, open air). LOL

BotW reflects a lot of what is wrong with "N" currently IMO, as they make tons of things because they can, with little to no ideas or purposes after the initial use of it. BotW may have been a much better game, if the tablet controls had stayed intact, as that was how the game was designed from the start, and to have that changed, may be a factor in why I don't find it entertaining as it was dumb down for NS usage.

Hows that HD rumble been for most users? I haven't heard much about it since 1 2 Switch. I'm sure it will be another very unused idea, like most creations within this company. I'm all for things that enhance gaming, but "N" stops supporting most of their own ideas well before most have even had a chance to shine, or get much support.

I only have two games for the switch, splatoon 2 and Mario&Rabbids. HD rumble basically acts like any force feedback in those games. I am curious about 1-2 Switch but I can wait for a sale or clearance 2yrs from now, lol.

Uh, I guess I'll be the voice of dissonance and day I thought BOTW was incredible. If you want a more linear Zelda experience there are a dozen previous entries you can check out. The open world grabbed in it grabbed me like few games have. I'd see something I wanted to check out in the distance, then make 5 or 6 pit stops on the way to it because other cool stuff showed up.

Just curious why you don't like it. it's on every outlets game of the year list already

I have a sealed copy as a gift. Never played zelda before. I enjoy good open world hmgames (loved horizon zero dawn)

Goddamn I feel so fucking old.

I ended up getting Cursed Castilla EX (3DS) for $9.95 and am very happy with the purchase.  The game is full of that old school charm and while very difficult at times, does not seem to be impossible yet.  At its core its a Ghouls N Ghosts clone but does everything extremely well.

The game does take advantage of some of the capabilities of the 3DS system.  The 3D is utilized much in the same way as Shovel Knight was - adding layers of depth to the sidescrolling.  The bottom touch screen is set up like a mini arcade cabinet and even allows touch control using the bottom screen though I much preferred the traditional system button controls.

I highly doubt the 3DS version will ever see a physical release so am very happy to have picked up the PS4 physical version form Play-Asia a few months back.  The digital 3DS version at $9.95 (normally $14.99) is a steal though in my opinion and would recommend getting it before this Thursday if you enjoy these types of games.

I was planning to get the PS4 version from PA, as a show of support, because I'm not collecting PS4 games, but I like the genre. As up until this release, most of these exclusives sat for a good long while. But before I could jump in, it was sold out, so I wasn't able to get a copy.

So in the end, it moved well with out me needing to buy it, so I was glad to see that happen. I ended up getting the 3DS version recently as well. And I agree, that so far it's a rather solid title. Seems kind of silly that it passed by the Vita, in favor of the 3DS, as I wonder how well it did on that platform and being digital only?

Especially after Jools stated how poorly Chicken Wiggle did for him on the 3DS. I'd be curious to see if CC sold better, and if CW just wasn't as appealing to the masses? Either way, I think CC could have done well on Vita, especially if a physical version was offered, but that boat may have sailed. Oh well, better luck next time uh? LOL

Breath of the Wild was amazing.  The open world felt actually open and free.  The food crafting actually works well.  There is so much to see in the game world with shrines (mini dungeons) all over the place with varying difficulty and style.  The game is just epic.  I can understand why some might not enjoy it.  Especially those playing it on WiiU with it's technical hiccups and the more cumbersome controls.  But, dang, on switch, BotW is easily my GOTY.  It's possibly the best open world action rpg I've ever played.   The scope of the game is really awe inspiring.  The way the controls work for the fine aiming allows for some skillful play.   If you have a brain, it's pretty amazing how you can combine environmental items to take out groups of enemies while remaining stealth.  As you get more confident in the controls just being able to go head first into a battle and wipe the floor with enemies later in the game is very satisfying.  This is what I dreamed of as a teen playing the original LoZ of what a Zelda game could be.  Really it's the perfect modernization of that open world formula where you can do things in whatever order you pretty much want.  Heck I managed to get pretty far on the final boss because I had delayed tackling the divine beasts and just happened to be exploring and found a way in.  Such fun.

...

I appreciate the recommendation for Cursed Castilla EX (3DS).  I'm going to take a closer look at it.

I'm hyped though it will probably be weird to play it without a stylus since I'm still working through 3D 2. Though i guess the Switch is touch still but still seems like it would be weird to play that way.
The original games had physical controls and they worked perfectly well. I've played a few other nonogram type games with physical controls and they were fine too. No doubt though the stylus really adds to the experience.

Anyone else looking forward to Steamworld Dig 2 today? I really enjoyed the first one and heist.
Didn't realize that was today. I loved the first game. I had no interest in Heist, but Dig 2 will be mine at some point. I'm hoping it gets a physical release.

Forgot to mention this in the post, but here's a warning for Human Resource Machine, Little Inferno, and World of Goo:

None of these games support the Pro Controller. It's touch or motion controls only from what I've seen since those were what these games were originally built around.

Totally appreciate you going the extra mile to note this.

Been playing some SteamWorld Dig 2 and enjoying it a lot. If you're wondering what's new or different, here's what I've noticed so far:

  • Water-based moves/attacks no longer drain pools when refilling your meter. You can also swim a bit by jumping near the top of a pool of water to get across it quicker than the first game.
  • Enemies stuck in the earth that break out as you get near also break the blocks to their immediate left and right, so you can better prepare to attack them or drop rocks onto them.
  • The XP system this time around is not tied to the ores you mine, but from enemies defeated. The enemies also seem to respawn every so often, so it's easy to grind a bit if you want to do that. So far, leveling up just increases the bonus percent you get from selling back ores.
  • Beyond the pure item/stat upgrades, there is also a perk system that you open up with each upgrade that offers various types of bonuses. The few I've seen included being able to get partial money for ores you destroy when making room for others or becoming immune from the explosion a certain item causes. The catch is that they require these upgrade cogs to enable them and you may not have enough for every perk you unlock until late in the game when you've found them all in the mines. They're not permanent perks either, so you can easily swap things in and out at the workbench to see what works best for you at that moment.
  • Instead of being an item you purchase, there are lanterns all around the mines that you can light as a permanent light fixture in that part of the mine for a minor bit of help to see when you're low on light.
  • I wouldn't call it an open world, but there's a bit more exploration outside of the mines to be had. You're travelling to the main town early on and I've seen some more areas to explore outside of that town, so it's not all centered around the town and the mine below like the first game. I'll take a guess that this won't be the only town/mine in the game.
It's been great so far.
