This is a "slim" Wii U from what I can tell, as it appears to be what should have been released 5 years ago, but since "N" can't understand the market, and never looks to see what is going on worldwide, they are now offering something that is new for them, but not really new to anyone else.

There are tons of gaming tablets on the market, that can all be played on a TV and and many have removable controller options.

Am I the only who sees the emperor is in his under wear?

Been in a meeting much of the morning... finally got to see the video... overall I'm actually pleasantly surprised.  I like that you don't have to remove the controls from the system and can just dock it and use a regular controller.  It's like the beauty I see in owning a Vita and the PSTV... except without the complication of uploading cloud saves or swapping game carts or whatever.

I'm not going to get overhyped.. I still need more detail.  Like is that cart slot compatible with 3DS/DS... or is it proprietary.  Is storage standard microsd?  Bundle prices (just the handheld... handheld + dock + controller dock thing... handheld + doc + extra standard game controller)?  Actual game lineup.. and of course any backwards compatibility (even if it's just digital).

This could be the ultimate Nintendo system for me.  I love the little kickstand and option to use this as a conversation piece in social situations.  I can imagine taking this to work and playing mario kart or something with a coworker during lunch.

I haven't seen the video posted here yet... so...

Sure, controllers for tablets have been available for a long time, but how many games on tablets utilize controllers? All the best games were designed with a tablet's features in mind, so that's mostly touchscreens and gyroscopes.

I do wish that Sony or Microsoft had a console design like this because games on Nintendo systems, even third-party ones, are rarely cheap. Can you imagine if there was a handheld with the same architecture as a PS4 or X1, and you could play all the games like on the actual consoles? It wouldn't be like cross-buy between PS4 and Vita - you would actually be playing a PS4 game and not a port.

Probably, but you're also the only one who doesn't understand that those things don't have Nintendo games on them.

(and referring to Nintendo as an Emperor is pretty hilarious in any context)

This system is great for "N", as it kills 2 birds with one stone, but I'm just not seeing anything here that is going to set the gaming world on fire.

Specwise, I doubt it will be anywhere near the PS4/ONE, so it is unlikely to get anything from those systems port wise, and I just see a bunch o moving parts that only add to the cost, a cost that will probably already be starting at $300.

I think every moving part you saw was "artificial" the controllers appear to be wireless. So it's probably just two pins for power sharing between the system and controller for charging. The doc probably is just a basic plastic dumb dock with the cabling necessary inside to breakout whatever connection pins are being used (probably enough for HDMI) and provide charging power to the system. I bet the actual plastic that joins everything together is actually quite solid since it doesn't have to do much beyond click in place.

They showed the standard controller being used on the go with the system in kickstand mode too... so again.. the doc itself is probably "dumb". Sort of like the dock for the PSP Go... where you could sync a PS3 controller to the Go, then dock it and the dock only offered the ability to charge the system and breakout the pins for plugging in a videocable.

Ultimately this is a bunch of proven ideas coupled with how people use tablets. IF they throw in some good media apps for Netflix and other services... it could be a heck of a nice little system. I could easily see this becoming the go to system for family trips.

Specwise, I doubt it will be anywhere near the PS4/ONE, so it is unlikely to get anything from those systems port wise, and I just see a bunch o moving parts that only add to the cost, a cost that will probably already be starting at $300.
I don't know about setting the gaming world on fire, but what about the potential for unprecedented developer support not seen since PS2? Potentially, everyone will want to make games for this: mobile game developers who are tired of busting ass just to sell their game for .99, Japanese developers who have been relegated to handheld systems in recent years, indie developers who are looking to expand from PC but traditionally couldn't afford to develop for consoles. For me, the blurring between traditional consoles and handhelds is bigger news than, say, Xbox owners being able to play with Playstation owners.

The reality as I see it, is this is going to be a rather expensive "tablet", in regards to what a family can buy, and add that with the expensive cost of physical media, and I still don't see this replacing a tablet that is already in the home.

I'm sure they will offer up inexpensive games on this device as well, but the same crowd that left the Wii, and didn't end up caring for the Wii U, is more than likely not going to rush out and buy this either.

I'm a long time fan, and a self proclaimed handheld gamer, and I don't see buying this at launch unless the price is super cheap, and there is a HUGE amount of games coming soon, and I personally don't see either happening. But I would love to be proven wrong.

I dunno, that NES color-schemed one looks pretty slick.
Perfect for a skin. I'd imagine the aftermarket for customizing could be quite good... especially if they do some official skins with popular stuff like zelda, pokemon, mario, metroid... and classic systems.

Overall I'm a fan of gaming, but loved what Nintendo did through the SNES... then was a little put off by the N64 but reluctantly got it later. I LOVED the GameCube... but then just never got much into the Wii and was pretty much 100% put off by the WiiU.

Yet, I'm actually very interested in this. I never though Nintendo would ever catch my interest fully again. I only got the 3DS because my oldest kid upgraded to a New 3DS XL. I loved the DS but just didn't care at all for 3D or the push for that.

As a handheld gamer this is a lot of what I wanted in buying a vita and PSTV. Same games being able to be played on the big or small screen. PSTV sort of fizzled on some of the support for games... but overall it was pretty close to what I wanted.

If this is $300 or less then that's less than what I paid for my Vita + 64GB memory card. If it's $400... that may be too much. But $300 and I have some guarantee on that lineup (what mario/zelda/metroid will be available at/near launch) as well as storage options (a 128gb micro sd is do able)... I could easily let this be the second nintendo system (GBA was my first) that I'll have bought at launch.

Uhhh, those specs seem kinda crazy. Like, inconsistent. 32gb of system RAM but the gpu is only 256 CUDA cores, with a max clock speed of 1ghz and 4gb of VRAM? The latter seems completely reasonable, as it's still below the PS4 Pro and certainly the Scorpio, so it makes sense for a handheld, but that system RAM number is bizarre.

For more on the relative power of the gpu, note that a GTX 1080 has fillrates of 102 for pixel and 257 for texture. CPU also isn't that hot.

"anything you throw at it" seems very optimistic.

edit: Oh, maybe that means 32gb STORAGE, not actual memory. That... Okay. Great. I guess that puts to rest any fears that Nintendo might be embracing digital!

The system memory is the same as the Wii U, in other words, you might want to buy an external drive for this. And I agree, "anything you can throw at it" is too optimistic. The Tegra X1 is a beast of a mobile chip sure, but it still underperforms against the AMD Jaguar SoCs that are in the PS4 and Xbox One. And I'm talking about the original PS4 and Xbox One. PS4 Pro and Xbox Scorpio only magnify this weakness.

Was at Gamestop today to pick some stuff up.  Asked if I wanted to be put on the waitlist for the Switch - which meant they would call me when pre-orders were available.  Doesn't seem like much of a waitlist.

Anyways, I saw someone argue that the Switch is gimmicky for gimmicks sake, but I don't really agree with that.  I personally like being able to take the games to go or docking them at home.  It's nice that the controller can stay attached to the screen or detach, depending on the situation you're in.  It's certainly got it's gimmicks, but I can see them as being a whole lot more useful than waggle (which I actually like in a lot of cases, but still).

picture of the specs
The system looks cool, what with doubling as a handheld, but it'll definitely be underpowered compared to whatever Sony and Microsoft put out. It must be using Tegra X1, with 256 CUDA cores, which is the same as the new Nvidia Shield. The Shield has 8 ARM CPUs, is capable of higher frequencies, and more FLOPS/cycle, though (and only 3GB shared RAM as opposed to Switch's 4). Both Shield products cost $199 each, so Nintendo could budget price this and still get away with it, I guess.

Will probably buy one, regardless. Portability is awesome.

I want to see more! On the plus side, March is basically 4 months from now so I am sure more information will arrive soon.

If this thing can run 3DS/DS games, is reasonably priced, and has some great third party games lined up, it may be the first console I buy at launch in a VERY long time.

I believe NVIDIA has already said the Switch is running a custom-made Tegra X2 chip or something similar.

From the trailer, it looks like you can't use the tablet and have the TV going at the same time, so I doubt you can play 3/DS games on there unless you can use the Wii U GamePad.

I edited it, I didn't realize by "memory" they meant the storage, not RAM. The RAM is shared between system and gpu.

The specs say "Maxwell" on it which is the Tegra X1. The X2 is "Parker" and would make the Switch really expensive were it in it.

If those specs are real, it says the max resolution is UltraHD (3840 x 2160) @30fps (for tv)... which is close to 4K's 4096x2160.  Wow.  720p on the handheld screen is fine by me.

Nintendo won't release this at a budget.

They don't for any systems. It'll probably be priced $350-400, then get a price drop in 6 months to $250-300 once the diehard buy it.

That's probably for video streaming or something, there's no way it could render any real games at that resolution.

come in with a sub-par spec console…give it some sort of gimmick like a tablet controller, advertise a few well known third party games to prove devs are serious about it, give it a launch mario title to prove youre serious about it, then realize its just not selling and watch all your third party devs leave while your left with only ONE version of NBA 2k to ever come out for your system.

brownie points to those who can tell me if my description is about the Wii U launch or the Switch launch...

edit: and yes, I will be getting the console day one, and am excited for it...just making a point...

It's more like Wii U rev. 2. Tablet controller looks a lot better and can apparently play 3DS games. It also apparently works without the console needing to be on, or you needing to be within range of it. Much better version of the system, and I can't wait to play Zelder Scrolls on the go.

Of course there is a way. It all depends on the game style. I could easily see 2D games running fine at that res on these specs. Definitely not high end 3d games... but lower spec games that typically don't require much system resources to begin with.

Still, I wasn't expecting that kind of spec in anything from Nintendo for at least another gen or two.

That's why I said real games. Not NES or super simple indie games. You're right, it could probably run Thomas Was Alone at like 16k.

I'd like to see what kind of battery life this thing has. Not much point in being able to take this on the go if it only lasts for a couple hours.

Or if you can only do so on the tablet itself, since that's apparently a touch screen.

But if the Switch isn't going to be compatible with 3DS games, then there's going to have to be something else on the way that will be.

Please bring my bae back for her triumphant return. It's been too long, I miss her so.

This specs arent real and have been disproven elsewhere.

On top of that, that Nwplayer twitter account has been proven as a garbage source multiple times now. That was the same account saying the system was in no way using Nvidia or a hybrid. They've gone back and deleted thise tweets now.

No one knows thw actual full specs atm. The only twitter accounts I woukd trust are Emily Rogers, Laura Kate Dale and Eurogamer since they all have reputable sources and were proven out this week.

I'm going to take a guess that there will be no BC with 3DS/DS/Wii U games unless they're specifically remastered for the new one screen system.

I would think if there was 3DS support, they would have showed it in the trailer. I kept hoping for some kind of split screen to show this. But then, the 3DS shows, you know, 3D. And the Switch doesn't.

Very excited about the Switch. Just not sure about having that and the 3DS.

Have they announced the 3DS is done, or will the systems and games be sold alongside each other?

so  switch can not play 3ds games

man i  would love to get a new 3ds to play earthbound and  bof  but    200 bucks for a system that be dead in 3 months

if rumors im hearing are right

System +  3 or 4 games  for  219  black friday   might be the way to go if you really want one

As long as you can actually take the system on the go, I'll probably get one soon after it launches (assuming there's not going to be a shortage). I've seen a few people act as if it won't be usable unless you're near the dock, though, and I'm not sure if there's a basis for that or not. Anyway, I almost never find myself actually playing home consoles any more, so this looks to be right up my alley - at least as long as it's not going to cost something ridiculous. Of course, as soon as they announce a Fire Emblem for it, I'll have to buy it regardless. Same thing happened for me with the 3DS.

Also, I don't think it's been mentioned here, but Bethesda has said that Skyrim hasn't actually been confirmed for the Switch:

I photoshopped the Switch into different colors! Which one do you like the most?
I like the blue-grey one the most. I'm bored of the whole futuristic/sleek black console schtick, would prefer something that stands out.

Overall the Switch doesn't really impress me. I'd rather have an inexpensive console over what seems to be an expensive handheld (ala Game Cube). The gimmick's not even unique, there already are tablets that do the same thing.

I can't stand the name Switch either, sounds like what a competitive Smash Bros. player would call themselves.

Nintendo has confirmed the dock is merely for displaying it on the tv and charging. The entire system is in the tablet.
