They never did that all this time, don't see why poor sales would make them change that. If anything iirc they're aware that most people prefer the hybrid format or even just handheld-only to docked-only.

The Switch Lite made sense because portability is one of the Switch's strong suits, being able to play console-quality games on a handheld.

A dock-only Switch goes against that, while realistically not solving anything. A small power upgrade would feel pointless and certainly wouldn't compare to a PS5/XSX. And even if Nintendo could go all in on power, they wouldn't dare to actually do so, because they wouldn't want such a big gap in power between the regular Switch 2 and a dock-only version.
They didn’t need a console only Switch because they had stellar hardware sales. If Switch 2 hardware sales fall below expectations, they will have trouble meeting sales expectations for Switch 2 exclusive games. I think they would get creative to sell consoles in order to increase game sales (more profitable than hardware).

A docked-only Switch isn't what I'd consider a creative solution, but we'll see

A docked only switch similar to the vita TV would probably be extremely cheap to produce. Especially compared to the regular switch and switch lites. Considering you'd remove the screen and buttons among other stuff just for starters that'd probably drop costs a bit right there. Now whether it'd be profitable or not is iffy since most people use the switch because of the hybrid factor even if they don't always use it one way or the other evenly.

I don’t want to put this into the universe but a digital-only, docked-only console would coincide with the other console makers while also virtually guaranteeing digital sales. Even cheaper and even more profitable. 🫠

Nintendo could probably go digital only successfully but that'd be extremely risky given that hardware and software sales are their bread and butter.

If it just becomes basically a streaming box there's likely little to stop piracy from going out of control at that point.

Nearly guaranteed Nintendo will release a digital only Switch 2 at some point.

Nintendo consoles still have a percentage of clueless parents who don't game at all just trying to buy games for their very young kids and don't want to naviagate an eshop on the console. I suspect Nintwndo will hang on to a physical media option longer than any other console for that reason alone.

Why?

This just seems like an incredibly unlikely thing -- I mean, it's not like the cartridge slot is a big expense, relative to disk drives.

I couldn’t tell you how expensive the Switch card reader is, but byte for byte, flash memory chips such as those present on every game card cost more than optical disks, and Nintendo produces every single game card at their own expense. Margins are definitely higher on digital sales than physical—that’s why they’re incentivized with higher gold coin percentages.

I heard Switch 2 games have to be installed to the Switch to play. That would be a shame and take away one of the physical release benefits.

I think Nintendo would experiment with digital only because it gives them more control. If games can’t easily be shared or re-sold, seems more games would be sold by Nintendo.

Are you saying the cost is insignificant? What concern do you expect to find on a Nintendo discussion thread.
No, I'm saying it's akin to hand-wringing over the $200 Apple iPad 2021 model. A perfect device and price point. There are very few things that are attractively priced with off-the-charts owners' satisfaction in these industries anymore and Nintendo hardware is one of them.

like there is zero buyer's remorse happening. You can even sell it for 80-90% of the full value, in cash, in 3yrs if you just keep the box. There are discounts and perks available to put things on the higher end of that. It's one of the safest personal electronics a person can buy. Their products hold their value. You just don't pay for things like $80 joy-cons; that is silly.

I'd be shocked if the NSW2 was anything but $399 or $449. cuz that is what it's gonna cost, and that's exactly how Nintendo is positioned in the market space.

It'll be interesting to see where the price point lands. I'd imagine they didn't bother announcing anything now and kicked the can to April on announcing the finer details with software and stuff so that the whole economic situation has time to shake out. They might be able to sell these for $300 or $350 right now and make a tiny profit but if there's a 60% tariff then that will factor in as the buck will get passed to us. Which, really there's no telling how things will be in the next six months. The Switch 2 could end up $500 before the dust settles and physical games $80.

Says it will be a July 11th launch and this

Anyone else tried the ROG dock with a Switch? I updated it to the latest firmware that is supposed to support the Switch, but all I get is a black screen. I hooked my Steam Deck up to it and that works fine.

Yes, assuming you're referring to the 65w charger device. I updated mine and actively use it as a dock. Works for me on both V1 and oled consoles.

Only suggestions I can think of is to ensure you used the most recent update file. Also that once you have the console connected to usb-c, tapping the power button on the nsw will trigger the video output.

Yeah the 65w charger. Good to know that it does work for you, so I’ll mess around with it more. I’d really like to have a second “dock” for my office.

Maybe they’re just clearing stock 😁 I was surprised there was no new Zelda amiibo for Echoes of Wisdom.
No they definitely produced more. There's ones that have been out of production for quite awhile that they have been releasing or are releasing soon. The new ones have different packaging (the back is different) as well so it's not like they have just been sitting in a warehouse for years or something

Change the resolution under "TV settings" on your switch to anything that's NOT " automatic" . If it's set to automatic my TV will not detect it. This is probably causing the problem. For some reason the automatic setting works fine with the official switch dock but not with the ROG charger dock.

Today was my first attempt at trying it with my switch and I had the same issue until I figured out that fix.

I feel kind of lucky I got a second dock for a couple bucks at a thrift store (people just donated it and it was still in the plastic original bag)... also grabbed one that Bestbuy sold that was generic but known good back in the early days when it was on clearance. So I have three docks for my original switch and my kids each have docks for theirs. That's one thing I will miss on Switch 2. Hopefully docks aren't too crazy priced.

Yeah I messed around with it today and got it to work! Very nice being able to play on the tv in my office. Thanks for the help ya'll!
