Sony made a grave mistake of not allowing 4k UHD disc playback or game disc reading capability on the PS4 Pro. I already have two PS4s and I won't be buying a Pro. I fully expect another hardware revision within the year.

Anyone with a 4k TV set could have gotten the most reasonable 4k player in the Xbox One S for just over $200 last Black Friday. The stand alone Samsung 4k players cost $200 on their own so there's no reason to not use an Xbox. This was a mistake by Sony.
I keep seeing people (mostly on here) bitching about the lack of 4K disc playback, but I think bluray (which never penetrated as well as DVD) has proven that most consumers don't give a fig about disc based movies. Here's some actual evidence.

Sure, some people (myself included) will prefer the fidelity 4K (and heck, even bluray) provides versus the ease of streaming, but we're the minority. All throughout the history of home media, people go for easy and cheap over quality. Sony was smart to not bother with the expense of including a UHD player.

The problem with this line of thinking is the fact that obviously the 4k Blu Ray player would have not added that much of an expense to the PS4 Pro if any at all considering the XB1 S has one and they have been selling them for 250 forever now. While I did finally upgrade to the Pro because of having a 4k tv and the fact that i have loads of gamestop credit and i got 200 for my OG ps4 if I didnt i probablly wouldnt have. The Pro is good dont get me wrong but 400 dollars good with no 4k blu ray player and limited steaming 4k options still is imo not worth the upgrade without having loads of free credit laying around.

Also PSVR is clearly a gimmick, sales of the PSVR have fallen off a cliff after the initial first wave of buyers and there is very little on the horizon for PSVR owners. Not to mention the same thing happened to VIVE and RIFT, they sold well at first then slowed to basically a crawl. VR is a gimmick in its current iteration and will be until it is vastly improved upon because fact is in VRs current iterations basically all that can be done with it is tech demos.

Yeah, well regular people are simple with simple tastes. There are still tons of people buying high definition disc-based media. Much of the decline can be attributed to the rise of prices and the rise of 4K, and these same videophiles being reluctant to spend money on old quality when now there is something new. But they didn't even think about that in this study.

There's always going to be 1000% more people streaming, that's neither here nor there. Those people were never buying BDs.

Disc prices need to come down. The article fully admits they are lucrative for their very high profit margins. I'm a steelbook guy and just this week Fantastic Beasts released at $35. This $30-35 has become the standard ever since 4K and lots of people are not buying. This type of stuff is cyclical with new tech and the prices need to come down, which will happen.

Netflix has simply been doing a better job than the BD publishers.

If they actually made an announcement this time, I assume they should have enough for more than just 2 minutes, but I expect the servers to be slammed at first anyway.

Try adding to cart from search result page instead of product page.  Slow, but seems to work.  I got a NES.

Worst site ever. Keeps crashing when I've had one in my cart right away.

Well, it looks like I woke up after an hour for probably nothing. They were late, then their site doesn't even work.

It is here or there precisely because they weren't buying BDs. It makes no sense for Global company to include a feature, even if its cost was relatively small, if only a small percentage of its users were going to use it. Want to play UHDs? I'm sure Sony has a device that will do that. But it's not the PS4Pro and the majority of the people buying the Pro don't care that it's not included. Microsoft didn't include it in the S out of the kindness of their hearts, they did so because they are far behind Sony and are (ineffectually based on sales data) pulling out all the stops to get some market share going.

Anyway, it'd be great if Sony included it. Saying that not having it is going to hurt them in any measurable way is silly. Not enough people care. They will make more money from the people buying it because the price is lower (and of course it would be higher if it were included) than they will lose from people not buying it because it's not.

I was actually able to enter gift card info, but then always in the call bestbuy  or processing order endless loop.

had to stop trying for a few minutes to finish surgery.  Came back and now it is saying classic is gone, took out of cart.  Bad idea bestbuy.

Always stops loading at when do you want your order. Other than once, but then my reward certificates weren't there and paypal won't load.

Was able to get an order for a switch on mobile. Took like 15 minutes of loading. Thank god. Really regretted selling my preorder one

Sony not going with gimmicks and fads as a focus?

What do you call PSVR?
PSVR is an expensive peripheral, not the primary thrust of the console. It’s an entirely ancillary endeavor that isn’t being foisted onto the consumer.

That said, I think the Switch is the purest game console Nintendo has released since the GameCube. The hybrid angle doesn’t strike me so much as a gimmick but rather as a concession that Nintendo is attempting to consolidate and reconcile a shifting marketplace with a device that is primarily a handheld but also offers console-like features and functionality.

Why have the big yellow button saying it's available when it's not? Jesus Christ, this store needs to get its shit together.

Spent a half hour trying to process my order until I'm met with the item out of stock and removed from your cart window. Now I remember why I never bother in situations like these.

While I agree they should have included the functionality to play 4K discs, I wouldn’t call that omission “grave” considering how tepid the response to 4K films has been thus far by the general public.

Granted while I agree with you, given the price of 4k movies at release, I'm in no serious hurry to buy them until they've had a year or two to cool off and come down to reasonable pricing. For people that do want it, all I can surmise is this was a cost effective decision to keep the pricepoint at $400. In 2-3 years when the system is due for an upgrade, it will likely make the list.

Finally said fuck it and went to the store. The closest store is 10 minutes away. The site said ready for in store pickup. Couldnt complete through to the order. Figured everyone else had the same issue. Got to store. Asked the guy at front and he said they were in the cage. Went to the cage and there were 20+ sitting there. Saw another guy buying one as we left. Murfreesboro TN store.

I dont know about you guys but I headed to my local store since it was "in stock" and managed to buy 2 switches, score!

Those extra $600 will really come in handy for elite plus status;D

Everytime I see someone say they bought two, I think of this :

People don't want to physically walk into a store and check. I got pretty much everything I needed at launch by preordering the switch in store when it became available.

The point was it said in stock online for same day pickup. Others who were really wanting one could have done the same.

Wait.. Nintendo switch? Isn't that when someone from the GameFAQs forum buys a 3ds from walmart then switches it for their old ds which they put in the box then return it?

What site tracker sites do you use to track if a Switch is in stock?

I wanna pick one up next week when I get paid.

Dat Zelda special edition is back up at gamestop. Dang son, some people done paid $200 for it on ebay. I wish I was an entitled millennial. Oh well. Time to buy toilet paper from dollar tree.

Yep it's the switch + Zelda bundle for regular price.

Waiting on GS to do this same bundle but for those looking this is a good bundle to get.

-Edit- sold out of the Zelda bundle already. The 1-2 switch was still available though.

I tried ordering a NES Classic yesterday as soon as they went live at like 1:05pm EST or whatever it was. I kept getting to the 'confirm purchase' page but it would error out. After about 30 mins of the nonsense it finally gave me a message saying "This item is only available in-store."

So I decided to stop by a store on the way home. I had to pick up my copy of The Show 17 anyway. No NES Classics (employee said they haven't had any in-store since launch) but I did see three Switches near the piles of other consoles by the registers. They told me they got some in on Monday and they were still three left yesterday afternoon. I just said fuck it and bought one along with Zelda.
