NO MORE HEROES Discussion - FS/FT Pure White Giant Glastonbury LE Pink Cartridge
I scanned the thread so far and didn't see any answer so... sorry if this is a duplicate question:

After killing an assassin, before you hit the rad Galaga highscore table, and they show you how you did on that board (your rank)...

What the hell is the second to last line that says something like:

??? ??????? x 0

Does anyone know what that is?
I can't remember, but I think it's unlocked when you choose one of the "Memories of ..." ability by getting the balls. It's basically a bonus from what I understand.

wow... I was surprised after beating the game how good the replay value is...
Bitter is amazing... the harder the combat the actually more enjoyable. Also in the boss levels, the cards you pick up are concept art instead of masks and instead of money hidden in grass overworld areas, it's concept art as well. nice.

Thoughts on the ending:
I beat the game (got both endings. Damn Henry was hard), and I have to say that while I enjoyed the game quite a bit overall, I was rather disappointed by the ending. I felt it was too goofy and light-weight. Granted the whole game is a comedy, but I expected more of a serious undercurrent as it's from the creator of Killer 7 and all. I mean the end is funny, but super shallow and I didn't like it referencing the fact that it's a game in the actual script (I liked the gamey visual flourishes though). This was especially bad as the build-up to the final battle in the forest was extremely creepy and eerie and it put me in the mood for something darker and more serious.

Personally, I think it would have been a lot better if they left Jeane (not the cat) out of the game. I noticed she was in the manual (as your lost lover) and I was thinking what a brilliant gag it would be for the manual to say Travis had a lost lover and then never have her be part of the game. It would be really funny as it would play off your expectations and make fun of that tired old cliche we see in every game where the lone hero is actually a victim of his "tortured past," blah, blah, blah... I also thought it might make the game more serious by subtle hinting that Travis once had a lover who died and that would somewhat explain why he is the way he is. Like maybe he used to be somewhat normal and then went crazy later in life. Just an idea.

The game was still quite good overall, but it could have been great if the plot came together in a more satisfying manner. I did like the fake ending though. I just wish they kept the overt comedy to that one.

Did you post that on gamefaqs too? Anyway, the game referencing itself (known as breaking the 4th wall, if you didn't know) happened in the games opening, during the fight with #1, and in the ending, so you shouldn't have been surprised by it happening. Video games, movies, theater, breaking the 4th happens in all of them, just not very often, and I like it when it happens.

Don't forget the game was making a point
to show how absurd everything was at the end. The focal point of the game really is on it's over the top reality of what happens around Travis. The game dosn't want you to take the plot seriously, that's what Killer 7 was for. Suda 51 very intentionally wanted to make this game as something quite different from his other games (all of which had mostly been deep story driven adventure games). Just understand where Suda and the game want to go, and if you expect other than that then I can easily see how you were disappointed.

Dammit, all these spoiler tags make me want to finish the game even faster.

I really like the combat. Anyone that thinks NMH combat is just mashing the 'A' button is a liar or needs to get off Sweet mode. I just started using the slo-mo sidestep which makes the combat even more interesting, though I'm still having trouble finishing those free missions.

I'm incredibly satisfied with my purchase of this game. Being a huge Anime fan I find the plot/characters/and style to be simply amazing. I mean the game has some killer flaws; framerate issues and whatnot, but its so stylish I couldn't care. If I wasn't so busy with work i'd have plowed through this game already.
I might get this game at $10, but for $50, its quite a rip off
You're a rip off.

Amazing reviews and satisfied CAGs already made us forget Brawl was delayed. Oh wait...

I've just got this on sweet mode right now but if you take the time the combat is not just mashing the A button thats kind of a stupid thing to say honestly :/. I do think that Suda 51 is a bit full of himself the game has a very "I'm to cool for school" feel to it but its definatly fun.

P.S. I just started the game finished the first boss pretty quick stage if it stays like this I may restart and do mild instead since I only really had issues in one room and that was because there were so many guys.

Does anyone know what that is?
u hafta buy the "Memory of Tattoo" with the dragon balls u collect,

then the game will keep a combo counter for you, which counts the number of consecutive kills u land without getting hit in between. You get a LB$ bonus based on your max combo.

also doods check THIS out:

if u wanna purchase the shirt Travis wears at the beginning of the game, there it is!! many options/ colors / sizes available too!!!

the basic American Apparel style looks right for me!

Something I just read off gfaqs thats pretty cool. After getting 3 skills, Lovikov mentions that each ball holds a soul. Each memory skill represents one of the Killer7...

Killer7 spoilers
from gfaqs...

Memory of Demon - Dan's gun was called the Demon Gun.

Memory of Child - Grants you speed, similar to Con Smith's speed. Also, Con was the youngest of the Killer7.

Memory of Woman - KAEDE's a girl. >_>

Memory of Mask - MASK de Smith. Also enhances your wrestling abilities.

Memory of Tattoo - Coyote has a tattoo on his left arm.

Memory of White - Kevin's blindness could be interpret as always seeing white... he also has white hair.

Memory of Three - Garcian/Emir's third eye.

This game is great.

Finally I got a chance to crack open this game. I am used to playing awesome games but I have never played a game where everything is just so awesome, just everything (story, gameplay, atmosphere, everything) in this game reeks of awesomeness. Made it to #9 and I am taking a break so I could go grab dinner. Lets hope I can quit playing this fucker tonight so I could attempt my CS homework

That ending really likes to fuck with you, doesn't it?
first Sylvia comes on the screen and say there won't be a sequel, but then directly after that it says "To Be Continued", in the Back to the Future font, no less. Oh Suda 51, my must you toy with my emotions like that?
You god damn well better ship tomorrow, eStarland.
I'm sure it will... but that's what you get for living in Canada.

Is it just me or does the last boss have so much health that the fight gets boring/cheap?

Ah well, back to it, I guess. fucking game forcing me to use Mk III...

Yeah, as soon as I saw that for each ability you needed 7 balls, I already noticed the reference. The dead giveaway for me was the memory of child linked with con.

Finally beat him. Seriously, Suda - extra health doesn't make a boss more challenging, just more boring. After all the great boss fights I was really expecting something better.

Still can't believe it's over though. I need a sequel.
Stuck on the last boss on hard. Not fun. I might not even do it.

800 hits to take him down to ~40%
Whoa, what?
It took me about 350 to beat him.
Have you upgraded your strength to its max?

It's all about charge attacks. Using normal attacks would take absolutely forever and this was my initial reaction as well, but after a couple hours of practice my final go with him took maybe 6-8 minutes. I'm a bit worried about taking him down on hard mode, but
I hear there's a katana upgrade that unlocks after the #1 rank fight that gives you unlimited beam energy, so I'll go for that upgrade on hard mode and it should provide a nice (but fair) challenge.

I think that if this doesn't end up like another Beyond Good and Evil, in the sequel
Henry will probably end up being killed off and Travis will try to find the killer while attempting to make the moves on Sylvia.

Or you will take turns as playing as both Henry and Travis.

Or both Henry and Sylvia are killed off and you have to now take care of Jeane.

I wonder where it could go...

*rubs chin*

Regardless we'll need at least one level where Travis is tripping on LSD and fighting evil ninja penguins.

It is a must!

Yeah, I posted this on gamefaqs too. I didn't want the ending to be fully serious or anything, but just a bit more serious than the rest of the game (ala Kill Bill). But maybe it was just the 4th wall breaking that annoyed me. I really hate 4th wall humor and tend to find it a cheap, easy gag that thinks it's more clever than it is. I mean how hard is it to say, "hey, you're playing a game/watching a movie!" Granted the Duke Nukem reference was genuinely clever and half made up for it. And the
fast-forwarding
was funny, but I think they could have pulled that same gag without mentioning that they're in a game and it would have been even funnier.

I'm not so sure that I'd want a sequel to this game. I thought it was pretty great and all, but the combat system doesn't lend itself to more than one game. Like as great as the boss fights are in this game, they're all a bit similar in that you must block them until you get a good opening to slash them from behind. I think a lot of this comes down to the fact that you're using pretty much the same weapon the whole game (or different versions of the same weapon). My favorite boss battles in games are in Metroid, Zelda, and Metal Gear Solid where you have a lot of equipment which allows for a lot more variety from boss fight to boss fight. I feel like No More Heroes milked the combat system for all it's worth and I'd be much more curious to see what other crazy ideas Suda 51 has up his sleeve.

Yeah, but I found that the 4th wall in this game was essential. When it breaks apart a movie or game, then yeah, it's a cheap trick. Here I found it more as a tool to excel the absurdity of everything and the world that the characters live in.

Aren't games like Devil May Cry like that, with the wait until you have an opening, attack, then run away and repeat? I've only played the first one a good many years ago, but that's what I remember about it. I think many successful franchises were built on that idea.

Of course, if a sequel is made, that doesn't neccessarily mean that the gameplay will be exactly the same. Usually I think gameplay is tweaked and new elements are added in sequels.
Tried to buy this at Gamestop and CC. No stock. No wonder why it probably will sell like crap.
Wow two stores didnt have it.

Call up ubisoft and bitch.

I like this game simply because of how weird it is. It's repetitive as hell, but I'm enjoying it to the max. I bought Travis a T-shirt that says "EAT" with a big open mouth(tongue hanging out) on it. I laugh every time.

Rank #2 took forever, not sure if there was something special I was supposed to be doing, but ah well, I succeeded!

I have enough money for Rank #1, but I'm going for the final upgrade so I will theoretically get the real ending. Probably an hour's worth of Assassination Gig 18 will fix me up.

poor Travis
one girl he was getting was his half sister and the other is married to his brother
can't the #1 assassin catch a break.

edit: for some reason i didn't have assignment 13 or 14 unlocked, but i am 99% i did all the remedial jobs

I think you have to get silver or gold in the jobs to get the assignments unlocked. I didnt have those 2 unlocked either, and I went back and did something that I got bronze in the first time, and then it was available.

Just took down #7, almost 4 hrs in. The ranked missions remind me of a 2D sidescroller beat em up which is real awesome. Now time to do homework. I hope my fucking roomate gets home from setsucon real soon so he could play the game and not have me think about playing it, lol .

To be honest, my problem with the ending
was that it wasn't over-the-top ENOUGH. The prelude to the #1 fight had me cracking up, especially the fast-forwarding, but the actual ending was way too serious. Sure, it was sort of a tongue-in-cheek serious, but it still felt very forced.

You don't need the upgrades, just the swords for the "real" ending.

Wow, you're blowing through it. Or I'm just really slow... I'm at about 9 hours in and just beat #7.

I'm sorry if this has been answered already, but I'd rather not dig through the thread looking for it.

Well I've gathered all the balls, dug up all the LB $s, and found most of the trash bins. So maybe that's why? I don't know.

I'm going as fast as I can, as soon as I finish a ranked match I start earning the money for the next fight and so forth.
